Full moon fever....and #fasterthanBOO10k

Does the full moon make you want to howl?

Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm not actually howling at the moon in this picture. I'm cursing Mother Nature. While I was stopping to take a selfie for this post on my virtual race, the skies opened up and it started to pour on me. Mother Nature doesn't always play nice, does she?

On the run, I don't always mind the rain. If it is a warm day, I enjoy running in the rain. As long as it is a gentle rain, that is. Being pelted with heavy rain is a different story. Rain plus 45 degrees plus wind does not make for pleasant running conditions. Although I shouldn't complain at all. Perspective. My friend Penny ran a 50k on the Chicago lakefront in these very same conditions. Now that is badass. It was her party and she can cry if she wants to. I would have.

While I ran my 10k, I reflected a bit on the week. My week at work was crazy. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated. There may have been some tears shed at several points in time. Finally, my coworkers and I asked each other if it was a full moon.

We found out that it was.

Do you think people act a little crazier around a full moon? Those of us in healthcare seem to think so. Although studies show that there isn't any more chaos when there's a full moon versus not, it sure seems like more than a coincidence. And it sure felt like it this week! All I can say is that I'm glad I can take to the road to pound it out. Some wine may have been consumed as well.

I've got some pretty supportive partners and coworkers. We brought our best to the clinic for Halloween, and the patients loved it!

When you work with kids, you get to do things like this.
As I mentioned, I had that virtual 10k to run this week--the GoneforARun Faster than BOO 10k! If you remember, I put this one on the calendar as a recovery run after I ran Chicago. When I planned to do this race, I didn't know what kind of shape my legs would be in, but as it turns out, recovery is going well. I'm pretty much back to my baseline mileage. Even though I don't love the cooler weather, it is much easier for me to run when the temps are in the 40s and 50s. Wouldn't it be nice if it could be cool in the mornings and warm up by noon?

Oh wait, I live in Chicago.

Anyways, I did this 10k in my neighborhood. It was windy, and the trees were starting to bare their branches. I have really enjoyed the pretty colors this fall. My legs really wanted to fly for this one, and I was really happy with my finish time: 6.2 miles, 54 mins, 8:41 pace.

Thanks to Gone for A Run for providing me with this complimentary entry in exchange for this blog post. I received some nice swag! And I loved this medal. The ghost spins around and he glows in the dark. This is my first Halloween themed run and I loved it!

Do you think people act crazier when there's a full moon? Do you act crazy when there's a full moon? Did you run a Halloween themed run? Did you dress up?

I'm linking this post up with HoHoRuns and MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap! I bet some of the others are posting about Halloween! Check it out!

  1. Happy (day after) Halloween! The swag for that virtual 10k is way too adorable! And I really want to believe that you are howling at the moon because that would just be way too funny! I so glad you are recovering well!!

  2. lol I love that picture! Good job on the run! I didn't dress up yesterday but I did go trick or treating with a friend and his daughter. Yes I do believe people get a little unhinged when there's a full moon. Makes things a little more interesting :)

  3. I have never done a Halloween run...but several Christmas runs, a few St. Paddy's runs and a handful of Turkey Trots. I guess there's a new bucket list item! The full moon....I don't pay much attention, but my legs (especially the hamstrings/glutes) were very out-of-sorts this week, so that all makes perfect sense (#hindsight).

    1. When you work with people, you tend to look for any reason for odd behavior! Seems like we are asking ourselves if it is a full moon on a daily basis lately!

  4. I love that medal! I felt crazier the week before last and agree the full moon has an affect on my mood lol!

  5. When I was growing up, my Mom was a psychiatric nurse. She swore by the full moon and dreaded going to work during that time. I'm a landlord, and Thursday night one of my tenants crashed her car into the front of the apartment building because she was drunk out of her mind and trying to run over her boyfriend. So yes, I definitely believe in the power of the full moon!

  6. No longer being in a service industry, I can't say as I've noticed.

We had a very nice, very quiet Halloween last night. We gave up handing out candy when we moved here. This house really isn't conducive to that, unless your idea of fun is either camping out on the landing or running up and down a flight while dogs are running around barking and Gizmo is no doubt running somewhere because of all the commotion.

OTOH, another loooooong week here. And I realized that I don't actually plan to run until Tuesday, because it's supposed to be nice Tuesday and it's been a while since I had nice weather to run in.

  7. My coworkers said the kids were crazy this week due to the full moon, but I didn't see it. I had one day where they were overly silly, but I think it was just the classes that lean toward being silly anyway!

  8. I did a race but didn't dress up. I only do when I go to the party. On the homefront, we had zero trick or treaters.

  9. Looks like so much fun where you work. I work with older kids so there was no dressing up for me! I did run on Halloween but it was not a race so I didn't dress up there either. I did however put on my Wicked 10K race shirt ( from a race a few years back) after I came home and showered. Does that count?
I don't mind running in the rain either, as long as its a light rain and is not freezing! -M

  11. I keep wanting to get out and either trail run or mountain bike with the full moon. I love it even more when there is snow because then it is SUPER bright. I'm not sure about acting crazy...I guess there is a certain baseline crazy that I don't really notice much difference :)

  12. The weather was ghastly on Saturday but then gorgeous Sunday. Typical Chicago. The moon has been bewitchingly beautiful this week!

  13. We can always tell when there is a full moon at work! It just gets crazy. I wanted to do the Faster Than Boo 10k. I thought the swag was cute. I really like the top you are wearing for the virtual race too! Congrats on a great finish time. Thanks for linking up.

  14. Funny you posted about the full moon cause I posted about it too. The kids were rambunctious at school this week. On top of the full moon, we had Red Ribbon Week dress up days and activities going on that added to the chaos. As a teacher, I definitely see a difference when it's a full moon or when it's raining and stormy out. I've never done a virtual run, but I would love to try one some day.

  16. I didn't even realize there was a full moon....I guess I missed it.... I dress up for work every year, too(as you know)... but I have never done a costume race/run... would be fun to do one day:)

  17. We don't really celebrate Halloween down here in South Africa - so pretty much just another day for us.

  18. I am with you sister! Trying being in a nursing home when it is a full moon! I am a firm believer! I was glad I did not have to make rounds this weekend :) I ran a 10K on Halloween too- it was a Halloween theme but some people dressed up which is always fun to see! I hope you and I both have a great week, I agree last week was just CRAZY!

  19. I've always wanted to do a fun run in costume! I don't think we have any races around here though that does something like that :( And an a full moon totally does effect people! My S.O. is a police officer and he can attest to that.

  22. I don't work in the health field but a co-worker of mine's wife does and she swears by it that the crazies come out in full force on a full moon. I was in New Orleans this weekend and is there ever a time when it's not crazy down there? I did see some wild stuff. Had the rain not put a damper on things I'm afraid I would have been in the middle of it on Halloween. It is fun to dress up though. Gone for a Run has some really nice swag for their Virtual Runs!

  30. I have noticed that I don't sleep as well during full moons ... which is odd because I have black out shades in my room so it isn't any lighter. I definitely think there is something to it.

  33. Yes to the full moon craziness especially at the high school I work at. Although with high schoolers crazy is relative.

  34. The medal and shirt are adorable! Great pace on your 10K! I remember in grad school how the whole office of graduate assistants would get so cranky and sensitive right around the full moon - I didn't think anything of it until a PhD student noted it, and then it happened each month without fail!

  35. We had a ton of fun dressing up and the kids just loved it!

I'm a first year dental student at Marquette and went here for undergrad too. I ran the half marathon yesterday as part of the make running festival, but didn't dress up. There were some spectatorsdressed up along the course though which was fun. Congrats on a fun 10k!
