5 Running Questions I'd Ask the Magic 8 Ball

Who of you didn't have a Magic 8-Ball when you were a kid? Actually, I didn't have one but one of my sisters did. In my younger years, I was always a big believer in voodoo, horoscopes, Ouija, Mystery Date (I always got the dud)--you name it. Maybe it was just wishful thinking, but I liked the idea of being able to anticipate the unknown. Maybe that explains why I don't like surprises. I never thought of myself as a controlling person but I guess I kind of am.

I do have friends who swear by their psychics. Seriously. Unfortunately, while that fortune telling is all in good fun, you and I both know that statistically, nothing can predict an outcome or an event. At every race, I still carry that lucky stone Becky gave me for my PR Chicago marathon, but since that one race, it has yet to give me more of the good juju I thought it possessed.

Maybe I used it all up.

Right now, I could use a little serendipity. Marathon training hasn't been going so well at the TTLWH headquarters. I swear that someone out there has a voodoo doll with my name on it. Maybe it's my husband. Anyways, I thought it would be fun to ask the Magic 8-Ball 5 running related questions to see what the future holds for these legs and help me make some decisions about my upcoming marathon!

For these questions, I used the online app Ask 8-Ball. There are 8-Ball apps available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store as well. Remember, you can only ask yes or no questions.

Ok, Magic 8-Ball, here's question #1: Will I run Grandma's Marathon in June?
Answer: Most likely! Alrighty, then! I'm liking this 8-Ball.

Question #2: Will I be able to complete my marathon training?
Answer: Most likely!

Question #3: Will I be able to run the marathon without a potty stop?
Answer: Reply hazy, ask again. Oh, that's not a good sign. Second reply: Without a doubt. Whew! I was worried about a code brown.

Question #4: Will the weather be favorable on marathon day?
Answer: Outlook not so good. Hmm. Should I be more specific? Why not? Is it going to be hot on marathon day? My sources say no. Is it going to rain? Most likely.

Question #5: Will I ever run the Boston Marathon?
Answer: Outlook not so good. I figured as much. I shouldn't have pushed my luck!

Well, that was fun...stay tuned for the next installment when I pull out the Tarot cards! While I'm just kidding about that, the unpredictability regarding my health has me feeling a bit desperate. I've got some big running-related decisions to make over the next week or so. I'm not sure I'll make my decision on whether or not to run Grandma's based what the 8 Balls says. Even if I liked the answers. I'll try to be a little bit more pragmatic about that. All signs point to yes.

What would you ask the Magic 8-Ball? If you didn't like the answer, would you shake it up and try it again? Are you a fan of fortune telling? Have you ever had a prediction come true?

I'm linking this post up with Fairytales and Fitness and Running on Happy for the Friday Five!

    1. I think I have my answer, then I have a really good day or a really bad day and it blows me out of the water!

  2. I'm pretty supersticious, but didn't have a Magic 8 as a kid. About that weather prediction....um, I had torrential rain in 2015 at Grandma's and would prefer a different scenario ;-)

  4. Oh yea, I would love to ask a Magic 8 ball some questions about my running! What the heck is wrong with my foot? When will it get better? When will I run my next race? Only time will tell!

    1. You can only ask it yes or no questions--conspiracy? Hmmm.

  5. This is such a cool idea for a blog post! It looks like the magic 8 ball gave you some decent answers for most of your questions, but I think it's wrong for #5 :)

  6. I don't believe in all the mumbo-jumbo (with my apologies to those of you who do). I just try to go into everything assuming it will turn out okay...and most of the time it does. You just need to keep re-shaking your own proverbial 8-ball until you get the answers you are looking for. Maybe you can get one of your friends' psychics to tell you how many shakes it's going to take!

  7. I had my Magic 8-ball so long the juice inside started to dry up! My sources say you will make the best of whatever cards you are dealt. xo

  8. It was actually my dad who had the magic 8-ball! My parents entertained a lot when I was a kid and they kept it on the bar. I think my question would be a little more broad. Maybe will I run any marathon again. I'm not sure I'm up to the mileage anymore.

  9. Hmmm. While I believe in signs, affirmations, mantra, yadda yadda, psychics are bit too woo-woo for me. Every time I pass one, I wonder how the heck they stay in business, but obviously there are people who believe.

  10. My friend has gone to a physic several times and a few things have actually came true. I have never had a magic 8-ball but I am sure I would have shook that thing until I got the answer I wanted.

  11. I loved my Magic 8 ball and I do recall using it a time or two to determine whether my latest boy crush liked me too!! Sounds pretty desperate now, but it was fun to play around with. I think this post proves that you are trying to take this all in stride (pun intended) and make the best of your situation. I love your sense of humor!

  12. The beauty of the magic 8 ball is that you can always shake it up and get another answer! I know you will find the answers you are looking for even if it doesn't feel that way right now. xoxo

  13. I grew up in a Pentecostal born-again Christian home (well, my mom lived it out while my dad drank himself silly) and so anything related to fortune-telling was considered demonic and while my personality is wired as rebellious, I was still scared shitless of all that stuff because I was so brainwashed as a kid. Poor little Suzy. :( Cool story though--I went to Haiti in 1996 and heard a Rah-Rah (Voodoo parade) go right past where we were staying. Voodoo is Haiti's national religion. It was very eerie and loud and intense.

I think that you will run Boston one day. You are younger than me and it gets easier and I still think that your fast days are not over.

  16. I didn't have a Magic 8 ball when I was a kid but wanted one so badly! So when my kids were the right age, I made sure to get them one...and they didn't care as much as I thought they should, go figure.

I hope you can find peace with your running during this challenging time.

  17. To be fair... I've never made it through anything longer than a 10 miler without a potty stop. Except for 1 half marathon.

Even so... I hope that you find your own lucky and the right treatment. So much love.

  19. We had a Magic 8 ball - I forgot all about it! I'm the youngest of 4 and I'm pretty sure we used it to see who had to wash the dishes.

  20. This was pretty fun to read! Love your sense of humor! I did not know that there was an online 8-ball app. But, I do have an 8 ball but I have never asked it anything as far as running goes. I am so tempted to go get it right now and ask if I will ever run Boston too but I am scared lol. Oh yes! I would shake that thing until I got the answer I wanted ha ha
Good luck to you. Tough decisions for sure.

  22. Gah, I'm so sorry this stupid RA is making you question Grandma's. :( :( :(

I knew there was a reason we got along so well... I was also one of those kids who loved Ouija and summoning all sorts of weird stuff... I didn't have an 8-Ball but my friends did. Good times!

  27. I don't think we ever owned a Magic 8 ball LOL but I love that you consulted it for your marathon! I get a little superstitious about things sometimes so I'd be too scared to use the 8 ball!
