This Week Was Brought to You by the Letter "C"

The letter C pretty much sums up my week! As in Changes, Corticosteroids, CrossFit, Camel, Crustaceans, and Chafing...

Overall, it was a good week. I started seeing patients at my new clinic. I'm getting used to the new setting, but what was really nice was seeing so many familiar faces as patients from my previous clinic populated my schedule. It's much quieter at the new place and that was really a pleasant change of pace. So far, so good.

I saw my rheumatologist for a follow-up and she's very pleased with how well I'm doing. My blood work shows a good response to the medications. Because I've been having pain in my left arm (you may have noticed me wearing a compression band on that arm), she injected my left elbow with a steroid. The lateral epicondyle was inflamed and causing me to adjust my arm position in yoga and at CrossFit, which in turn was straining everything in my forearm. The inflammation took a few days to resolve following the injection, but now my arm feels pretty good.

I'm hoping with some relief in that joint I'll be able to improve my flexibility in my yoga poses. This week's apex pose was Camel and even with all the prep work Carol had us do in class, I was really struggling to get my hands back to my feet. I've never been super flexible, but it was a little discouraging to realize that I've lost some of my range of motion.

I had 2 CrossFit sessions with Sammy Jo. We are working with weights to strengthen the posterior chain, but we also did work on the hips and core. Interestingly, Sammy Jo gave me props on my chest position during our back squats, commenting on how "open" I am. I guess it's all a matter of perspective!

Birddogging with Steph
My runs were good this week! We did have cooler mornings earlier in the week and I executed my tempo run and speedwork according to plan. The heat and humidity returned for the weekend and running was a bit more of a challenge. No complaints, though. The leaves are changing, a reminder of cooler conditions to come.

When I woke up Sunday and looked at the weather, I knew my planned 10 mile run was going to be tough. At 7 am, it was already in the 70s with 70% humidity. I took it slow and used the 4:1 run/walk intervals. I was surprised how good I felt throughout the run and didn't struggle with pacing at all.

What I didn't count on was the EPIC chafing I endured through most of the run. I wore my new favorite Inknburn shorts. In the past, I've had a little chub rub while wearing them. They are fairly short. There's also a seam running down the inside of the legs. For this run, I was going to put Body Glide on my inner thighs. I forgot. Shame on me. By mile 3, I was paying for that mistake. On my next walk interval, I pulled out a little pack of Chamois Butt'r and slathered it between my legs. I needed to reapply several times during the run. Did it help? Not so much.

I don't know what possessed me to keep going. Maybe it was my determination to stick to my plan. Maybe it was because aside from the chafing, I felt good and was running well. Maybe it was because I saw a few people I knew on the path at different points in my run--stopping to chat for a few minutes took my mind off the pain. Whatever it was, I knocked out 10 1/2 miles by the time I returned home.

Epic chafing? Who knew?
I went inside my house, dripping with sweat. I also discovered that I was dripping with blood from the chafing between my thighs.  I'll spare you pictures--nobody wants to see that--but I have been applying CeraVe Healing Ointment liberally. The shower wasn't as painful as you might expect but I'm pretty uncomfortable.

I received no sympathy from any of the men at my house. My youngest son showed me a huge turf burn on his leg from yesterday's rugby game. He had an epic game in spite of the heat, with multiple tackles and 2 trys. One of those trys was scored after a 90 yard run where he eluded the defenders. It was fun to watch!

Crustaceans anyone? My sister received a lobstergram and she invited my husband and me to join her and her boyfriend for dinner. And this is how my week ended...

How was your week? Any theme to speak of? Any chafing? Have you had a lobstergram?

I'm linking up with all the other Wrappers at Holly and Tricia's Weekly Wrap!

  3. The bleeding from the chafing is the worst! Showering hurts huh? Loved all those cross fit photos this week you look so strong. I love it. You and your sis look like you had fun together. Glad your arm is feeling better. Have a great week!

    1. Oh my gosh--I've never had bleeding from chafing before. I'm walking like I just got off a horse. Damn thighs.

  4. No lobster in my life (like, ever). Ouch to that chafing...thankfully, I haven't had much issue with that (especially in recent months LOL)

    1. No lobster because you don't like it? Allergic? It's soooo tasty!

  5. Sign me up for the Lobstergram. YUMMY. I've never really had any chafing. I know you are tired of hearing it -- Trail Toes. (You can choke me later.) I'm so glad the shot helped your arm! "C" you later! Thanks for linking!

  6. I tried to like lobster when I lived in Boston, but there was something about it that I didn't like. I tried it multiple times, to see if I did end up liking it, but I'll stick with shrimp.

  8. My chaffing is the worst under my sports bra when it happens. Looks like you had so much fun with your sister!

    1. I used to get chafing there, but since I've switched bras, that has gone away. Now my chafing has headed south...

  9. I used to get chaffing under the bottom band of my sports bra, but that was because I'd come home from a long run and cut the grass or do some serious gardening for several hours after my run and not change out of my bra since I would still be sweating... I'm surprised I don't chafe more because of my age and thinning skin.

I'm not sure what a lobstergram is, but if it includes receiving free lobster, I want one!

    1. I think I chafe more because my thighs have gotten bigger from all those squats...you win some, you lose some....

  10. Oh no to the chafing! Glad your arm is feeling better. I love that your son plays rugby - I played in college...such a fun sport!

  11. ahhh chaffffffing. I THOUGHT I NEVER EVER EVER DID. Until I ran my first half. #holymolywow

  12. At least most of these were good "c" words :-))) And I had some major chaffing from my long run last week so I put on a ton of Aquaphor before my 11 miler last week and it worked like a charm, but I often forget too and it's a PAINFUL mistake. Love the picture with the lobsters - so delicious. And please bring on the cooler temps!! What's with the humidity in late September?

    1. Right? It's supposed to be close to 90 today. I fear for the marathon runners--I wonder if this heat will linger?

  13. I'm kind of surprised I didn't chafe in yesterday's conditions. Yikes! The Lobstergram looks fun! I'm loving the lobster ravioli from trader Joe's.

  14. Glad your doctors are pleased with your health! I was worried about chafing during my 12 mile run but fortunately the glide did its job, even though it started to melt! Hope you're feeling better! And ooh the lobster looks delicious!

  15. I'm glad you're feeling pretty good! I got chafing on my upper arm during yesterday's run (though it didn't bleed 😳). I'm usually pretty good with the thigh chafing because of my skirts. Just another reason I love the so much...built in shorties!

PS I don't know if you planned this but the only publishing option is Google. It used to have many choices for commenting.

    1. I agree about the built in shorties--my INB skirts have those. But not the shorts.

  16. I don't chafe. I know, lucky me. It was humid here!!!! Summer is back or has finally arrived.

Nope but I won't mind getting a lobstergram.

I can add a C...car crash. I got rear ended on my way home from my race yesterday. I'm fine..the car not so much.

  17. Oh man, that chafing sounds rough - been there, done that!

I'm glad that overall you are feeling good and had a great week!

  18. Awe, chafing sucks. But I remember when my boys played rugby--they'd get the CRAZIEST burns. I have a few photos of Jake with bloody patches on his face. :/ I still complain about my chafing though. No sympathy=no dinner.

  19. Oh man, chafing is the worst! Glad you are having a great week!

  20. It's so humid here for so many months that I gave in and run in capris all the time - my thighs just couldn't take that chafe, LOL. I do use 2Toms or Body Glide for my bra band chafing issues, but sometimes it still happens on a longer run and OUCH.

That is such a cool picture of you running toward the sunrise. :)

  21. Sounds like a great week - minus the epic chafing! LOL on your son not having sympathy and awesome on his game!

  22. Sounds like a good week except for the chafing, ouch! That definitely sounds painful. Hope its feeling better today :)

  23. The humidity and the chaffing go hand and hand (or hand in hand? I don't know, I wasn't born here)... I got some major chaffing this weekend on my race too!! it burned!! ugh!!

  24. Lobstergram? Who knew there was such a thing??? Okay, you and Rachel (Running on Happy) are scaring me of this chafing thing.... I've never chafed and now I'm afraid once I pass that 13.1 mile marker, going beyond any distance I've ever gone, I may chafe!! Guess I need to keep the Bodyglide on standby!! Great week Wendy and yes, I have #squatenvy!

  26. Wellllll, I'm glad I'm not alone in the chafing world! I chafed like a mofo this weekend despite lubing up plenty before my run. I must have just been sweating something fierce. Eeeewwww...

    That lobstergram looks delicious!!!

  29. So sorry to hear about the chafing! It is the worst! Congrats to your son on an epic rugby game! Those lobsters look good! :)

  30. I was a little nervous with the letter C. Glad I was worried for nothing. I get chafing under my bra band. I'm not changing bras, I use some Territory Run Co Anti Chafe Balm, you have to apply it with your fingers so it's messy from the tin but WOW! I can feel the chafe scar with my finger so I know exactly where to apply it. I use Glide on the thighs (when I'm feeling brave to wear shorty shorts) and arms, though. Mostly stay away from shorts with a shorter than 5" inseam. Enjoy the lobsters!

  33. I had forgot how bad chaffing was. Building back my miles up this training session, I've had to deal with it in my inner thighs along with under my arm BUT it was my fault cause I wasn't in the habit of putting on trail toes. Which Holly introduced me too! Great stuff btw!
I've still got to give Ink n Burn skorts a try! After my last chaffing I bought a new pair of boardies from Spandex so we will see.
