Trials and Errors

This was a week of trials and errors, both on and off the road. Some weeks are like that. I've been struggling with some career decisions and a couple of days off early this week gave me time to clear my head. Wouldn't it be great to have someone to tell us what to do? Fortunately, there's running and cycling to give me time alone with my thoughts.

It was also an interesting week on the blog. My post about taking photos for Instagram was really popular and that made me happy! But I think my Runfessions post may have offended some people when I talked about race bumper stickers. By no means do I judge any of you who put running bumper stickers--no matter what distance--on your car. You know I am supportive of anyone who runs, no matter what the distance. I know how hard it is to up your distance and to line up to run a race. But I've shared in the past about how I didn't feel like a real runner until I ran 26.2, which is why that will be the only distance I put on my car. Even my first marathon didn't meet my standards. This is my issue, my problem and I'm sorry if anything I said was misinterpreted. We are all on our own journey. This blog chronicles mine.

Along with that, my workouts were a test of patience. The high humidity was back again. I had some time constraints and weather related issues, and this week flexibility was the key to getting it all done.

Trials and Errors

I was happy to get in 2 yoga studio classes this week. Megan's class on Monday was a tribute to the full moon. Her theme for the class was opposites. Yin/Yang. We did Sun Salutations and Moon Salutations along with other complimentary poses. As always, I felt very uplifted and positive after her class. On Wednesday, we had a sub. The owner's husband taught a tough class, as he always does! The apex pose was standing big toe pose. I'm struggling with balance right now and we worked on a lot of balance poses. Naturally, I struggled with all of them. Both classes were full of hip openers and I felt really good all week.

I got in 3 runs this week. Tuesday morning, I had an early morning meeting and after a sleepless night, I skipped my predawn alarm and slept in. But no worries, I got that 5 miler in, albeit during some very warm midday conditions! I stopped at the park to do my upper body work as well: body rows, hollow hangs, scapular pull ups, and chin ups. Making progress! 4.87m/39:53

Trials and Errors
Getting closer to the bar!
I also played with headstand and forearm stand. Like I said, I'm balance challenged these days. I tried to push up from headstand into handstand but it wasn't happening.

Trials and Errors
The camera caught my graceful tumble to the ground.
On Thursday, I ran another hot, sticky 6 miler. Becky had me work on the rope climb. She also had me do an exercise with slam balls and jumping forward. I am so uncoordinated! It's not that it was difficult, but I couldn't get my moves synchronized. She also had me do handstand push downs against the wall and atomic sit ups. 6.08/53:57

Trials and Errors
Handstand push downs. She wouldn't let me push back up but I did it once.
Saturday morning, I got up to run but it was pouring rain. I just didn't want to run in the rain, so I made the plan to run after work. Turns out it was 82F and 60% humidity. So I did what any runner would do, I went for a bike ride! Ha. I knew that the forest preserve paths closest to my house would be crowded, so I sucked it up and went on my 30 mile round trip route. I struggled a little bit with the conditions but I brought plenty of water and sipped frequently. On the way home, I decided to take a different route and realized that I was going the wrong way! So yes, I ended up taking the long way home and rode about 35 miles. I can't be sure because my Garmin died. But the physical exhaustion I felt after my ride was sweet. I think you know what I'm talking about.

Trials and Errors

Sunday morning was steamy but cloudy. I was grateful for that the clouds because it was 75 degrees with 90% humidity. Just like Florida, right? I tried to stay mindful of my effort because I really wanted to run the whole 6 miles I had planned. The humidity made it hard to breathe. At 4 miles, I stopped at the playground to do my upper body work. I promised myself one set: hollow hangs, scapular pull-ups, chin-ups, body rows, and push-ups. I was happy with my effort and results. It was hard to start running again, but I did and I got the last 2 miles done. I was soaked! 6m/53:38

Trials and Errors

I'm happy with how the week ended. I pushed through some tough runs, a tough bike ride, and some tough workouts. I'm seeing progress with my upper body work. I really want to add a 4th day of running back in but I don't want to aggravate my foot. Yes, the PF has been mostly quiet, but I do get an occasional reminder that it's not completely gone. I'm hoping that when the weather cools off and the running feels easier, I'll be able to go back to 4 days/week. I'm still hoping for an October half marathon. Becky just shakes her head.

She's not a runner.

How was your week? Are you still dealing with heat and humidity? Have you had to modify your runs?

As I do every Sunday, I'm linking up with my friends Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap. I'm also linking up with Angela and Ilka for their Sunday Fitness and Food linkup!

  1. I had gone less than half a mile yesterday when it started raining. I was so tempted to cut it short, but I was determined to get in the first long run of this training cycle. So I reminded myself that it rained the entire time I ran the Honolulu Marathon 2 years ago and this was just excellent training for those conditions. The rain stopped about 5 minutes later.

If you have flexibility in your schedule you might consider alternating 3 days of running one week and 4 days the next. Week 1 run M/W/F, week 2 run Sun/T/T/Sat. That gives you a day to recover between every run.

  2. I wasn't offended by your previous post about the bumper stickers. If people want to display the for any distance, thats's fine, but no need to have THAT many stickers on one car LOL

  3. We had a few days of cooler weather this week and then it got hot and humid again on Friday. I think an October half is a fair goal for you. I'm signed up for a half at the end of November and not sure if I'll make it there, but Im hopeful that if I am really conservative about my training that I may be able to pull it off. We'll see.

    1. If I keep running as I am, I'm pretty sure I can pull off a half in October. The PF is the outlier...hopefully it will continue to cooperate.

  4. You have reminded me that I wanted to do more bike riding. I didn't do any this summer. I feel like if I have time to ride bike then I have time to be doing a run...lol. I just need to find a balance!

  5. You're the bomb; sensitive enough to catch the misunderstandings (re: bumper stickers). I am happy that you clarified. Some, many, of us are not able for a variety of reasons to achieve a full marathon but work really hard to reach other goals, be they 5K, 10K, 10 miles. 13.1. Even though we've not met in person, you know me well enough to know how hard it was to reach that half last fall. I proudly and with great joy display that sticker on my car. It was hard won.

I know that you support all runners at whatever level we are. You've shown that in spades, in words and more. <3

The high heat and humidity continues apace here in Rhode Island, too. It's been discouraging. 2016 has tested my mettle on many levels. The other day I was so blue about my constant setbacks and lack of progression that I was in tears. I can't get out of my own way, struggling to complete 5K again. I've opted not to run a planned race on September 10; I'm not ready and am taking no chances.

I hope with the coming cooler weather that I can get a grip. Constantly reassessing. If all I can manage is a couple of miles three times a week, I feel it's better than nothing. From 2012-2015, ages 59-62 there was a steady progression. 62-63, on the cusp of 64 is a huge difference. I'm still trying to figure it all out.

It is such a thrill to see you strength progressing. A gift of the miracle of the internet that you have the ability to share with so many followers. Your photos and narrative never fail to inspire. I salute you on a daily basis.

Have a great week. Keep cool.
(Looking forward to hearing your decision on the work situation. Wishing you the best as your sort it all out).

  6. I want your body when I grow up. That is all I have to say about that.
My run on Friday was glorious--decent temp, but not too humid and it just felt fluid and easy (though still not fast, but I don't count on that happening any time soon). Yesterday I snuck in my long run, which I wasn't expecting, and boy am I glad I did as it was HUMID AS F today. And I got to be lazy :D
As for making comments--runfessions is one of those posts that can be inflammatory if you don't know how to read it. I know you, I know your voice, I understand it. Some times people read too much, or else they read too little. You're good, boo. Good luck with work, and also I finally listened to your Diz Runs episode and it made me sooooooo happy, :D

  7. I'm gonna have to re-read your Runfessions post...cuz I have no idea what was so offensive LOL Thankfully, the rain ended yesterday morning and I was able to get in my LSD...it was hotter and much more humid today. Even the bike ride (with the "breeze" of the head wind) felt sticky.

  13. I've only run half marathons and have only displayed half stickers and only for a certain period of time afterwards. I have too many 'foot issues' to ever be able to run a full marathon...however, IF I ever did, you can bet your bottom dollar that I would not display any distance sticker less than 26.2 on my vehicle. I will admit that it bugs me to see people with a 26.2 sticker on their vehicle when they obviously haven't run even 3.1 miles in a very very long time! Just my opinion though...we're all entitled to them and as you said, we're all on different journeys. We're here to motivate and encourage one another in whatever distance we are tackling. By the way, the headstand pushups are impressive and I'm thinking I need to do more Yoga!!

I am constantly adjusting my schedule based on how my body feels. Last week I skipped my bootcamp classes all together to make sure I was ready for my long run. Then the long run didn't go that well so I stopped at 20KM and then went home and jumped on the bike for 15. It is what it is. We are flexible enough to handle it.

  52. This humidity sucks. I was hoping to start some cyclocross this weekend but if the humidity doesn't break I will probably bail...too hot for running much less jumping over things while carrying a bike. Hope you get a reprieve soon!

  53. Still crazy heat and humidity here, but about to be a hurricane instead.
So sorry, you are dealing with job stress.

  54. Your posts always motivate me. 35 mile bike ride? damn. and yes I know that exhaustion feeling! The best! I always love those nights when you finally get into bed and know you will get such good sleep haha.
I actually do want to get a bike too for some road riding. Do you have any suggestions for a more inexpensive bike to start out with?

    1. I love my Trek Lexa! It's an "entry level" road bike, but it is all I need. They have 3 different models. Mine is the basic one. I got it on sale because it was from the previous year.
