Monday was a beautiful day. I woke up to sunny skies and planned to ride my bike to work after lunch. I took my yoga mat outside to do my weekly yoga class and settled onto my mat.
Then my phone rang. Mama drama again. I rolled up my yoga mat and spent a couple of hours dealing with that situation. I called work and let them know that I couldn't come in.
I was anxious, shook up, angry...and then...
My thoughts were heavy as I saddled up on my bike to head out for a long ride later that day. I don't usually ride long on the weekdays, but since my son was home I figured that if anything happened, like a flat tire, I could call him to come and get me. I needed this ride.
I rode out past the junior college and to the forest preserves. The paths were mostly empty except for a few walkers. My legs felt strong and I loved the feeling of flying on the hills and the straightaways. I soaked up the emerging spring blooms. It was nice to see all the colors of nature. I came upon a few deer and stopped to snap their picture. They didn't look too concerned to see me but crossed the path to eat some plants on the other side.
As I ventured farther on the path, my ride became a little more challenging. There was a section that was completely submerged in water, probably left over from the heavy rains we had the previous week. To avoid it, I had to detour off the path onto the road into oncoming traffic. I was careful to stay on the shoulder but it was bumpy and I almost dumped my bike a few times. I found a break in the foliage and made my way back onto the path.
After a few more miles, my beautiful forest preserve ride came to an abrupt end. There was a construction barrier and I was detoured onto another busy road. I made my way back to the junior college and headed home. I was back on the road with traffic and needed to make a left-hand turn. I proceeded to the left turn lane and was cut off by an angry motorist, even though I signaled that I was turning left. When I turned left, my phone fell out of the holder on the handlebars and bounced down the road. I turned my head to look for it.
That is when I lost control of the bike.
Do you know that feeling when you're going to fall or crash? You are aware that it's happening. It feels almost surreal. I was clipped into my pedals and couldn't unclip in time to catch myself. I tried to regain my balance of the bike but instead crashed to the road. I slid across the road with my bike on top of me into oncoming traffic. I prayed that the cars would stop.
I finally came to a stop. For what felt like an eternity, nothing happened. No one moved. Then the driver of the car in front of me got out and asked if I was ok. I told him I didn't know. I moved my wrists and my ankles. Nothing seemed broken but I was hurting. My hand was bleeding and my knee was coated with blood. But I seemed ok.
Another driver walked over to me. He asked me if I wanted him to call 911 and I told him I didn't think I needed it. He told me I was covered with blood and offered to help me up. Shaky but ok, I stood up. I started to cry.
I didn't cry because I was hurt. I didn't cry because once again a motorist was a jerk. I cried because was mad at myself for getting distracted. For not being mindful. For not being able to finish my ride. But mostly, I cried for my oldest son just who cannot get his act together.
We walked over to the parkway. Someone brought me my phone. Someone else brought me my bike. Once I determined I was ok, everyone drove away. My bike was ok. I could have ridden home, but I was so shaky. I called my son to come get me and I assessed the damage. My knee took the brunt of the crash with a large abrasion. My shoulder hurt and when I looked at it, I found a large abrasion there too. I saw that my InkNBurn shirt was shredded. I was wearing my fingerless cycling gloves, and the uncovered skin on my fingers had giant gouges. My face was scraped up.
But I was ok. No broken bones. My helmet kept me safe. I was pretty sore all week. I couldn't do yoga or strength training--nothing that involved deep bending of my knee or kneeling. But I could run. Slowly and with run/walk intervals, but at least I could do that.
Have you ever had a bike crash? This wasn't my first but it was definitely my worst bike crash. I've fallen while running too. How do you treat road rash?
Band-Aid® HydroSeal™ Bandages
Following my crash, I first started my wound care with regular bandages and non-stick pads. After a day of washing my hands while seeing patients, I realized that I needed to find something more durable. I browsed the first aid aisle at the local drugstore and found these amazing bandages. As a nurse, I've used hydrogel products for wound care on my patients but this is the first time I've seen them sold over the counter. I thought they'd be perfect for my knee and shoulder wounds. There was also a smaller strip type product for the fingers. Wound care has changed over the years. In the past, we were taught to let the wound dry out and scab over, but we have learned that keeping the wound moist and covered is the best way to heal and prevent scarring. Band-Aid® HydroSeal™ bandages are waterproof and meant to stay on for 3-7 days. Because the bandages are waterproof, they seal out bacteria and other debris, so there is no need for topical antibiotic ointments. They are very thin, but the gel is designed to absorb fluids from the wound, which promotes healing and prevents scarring. The evidence is strong for the use of these bandages in wound care.
I bought 2 sizes of the bandages: the finger size and the extra large. I applied the extra large pads to the wounds on my knee and shoulder. Even though the pads are supposed to last for 3-7 days, those wounds were so big that the gel filled up very quickly. By the next day, the pads were coming loose and leaking and so I had to change them. But what I noticed is that both wounds were markedly smaller! I was pretty excited about that. I also liked the thinness of the bandages as well as the relative unobtrusiveness of them. I didn't want to draw attention to all my wounds and these bandages were helpful with that. Personally, I think the HydroSeal™ bandages should be part of every cyclist's and clumsy runner's first aid kit. They also have a product just for blisters.

I think we might be in sync - I had mama drama on Monday, too. I seriously cannot wait until my daughter pulls her head out of her ass and we can move past this crap. I totally wish the same for you.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you are okay after your bike crash!! That's so scary!! I'm also glad you weren't hit by any oncoming cars! A few years ago, a good friend of ours was hit by a car while he was on his bike and luckily, his helmet saved him too. We got the call and ran to the emergency room and seeing him on a back board was terrifying.
I like those hydro seal bandages! We keep them in our camping first aid kit. :)
I thought we were past all this nonsense--but someone has got some growing up to do.
DeleteOuch! Ouch! Ouch! I cannot imagine the extra dress & turmoil the crash added to your heavy heart. I wish I could hug you in person. Hoping for speedy healing, on all counts. ((Hugs))
ReplyDeleteStress, not dress (auto correct fail)
DeleteI appreciate the support. It's been a rough ride (literally and figuratively).
DeleteThank goodness you are okay! Glad the approaching drivers were paying attention. Sorry about the Mama drama, too. Hopefully things will get better on that front.
ReplyDeleteTime will tell.
DeleteI'm so happy that you were able to walk away from that! Even though it was not your fault at all, when I drive near bicyclists, I get so nervous that s/he will fall in front of me and I won't be able to stop or avoid hitting the rider. It makes me extra careful unlike the driver in your story who didn't care at all! Hope your Mother's Day was a good one...you earned it!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of times when I'm challenged by drivers. I don't get it. I'm like you--when I see a cyclist, I try to be extra cautious.
DeleteYikes! I am always afraid that I am going to fall on my bike! I've had a couple of near misses. There is nothing you can do when you feel like it's coming. I am glad that you are ok. Ouch! happy happy mother's day to you
ReplyDeleteOuch is right! My biggest fear was crashing while clipped in. Ok, now I can put that on my checklist...
DeleteI'm so sorry Wendy! That sounds really scary. I'm thankful that you are generally okay, and taking care of those wounds.
ReplyDeleteSo scary, but now I'm using it for a teaching moment for my young patients, so many of whom tell me they are "too old to wear a helmet".
DeleteWow! Thank goodness it was just a few scrapes and nothing more. I hope the drama at home calms down soon.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both!
DeleteI’m glad you’re okay, and that the people around were nice enough to make sure you were okay and retrieve your phone. It’s so frustrating to fall like that. I fell in traffic a couple of years ago, and I cried too. I hope you heal up soon, and happy mother’s day!
ReplyDeleteI think people in general are pretty decent. i hope you had nice people when you fell too!
DeleteOh my goodness, this was scary! I always wondered if those pedal straps are actually a good idea. I'd want my feet readily available to touch the ground for instances like that. Thank goodness you were wearing a helmet and that you weren't hurt enough where you needed medical attention.
ReplyDeleteI really like the clip in shoes. I have more control of the pedals but yes, there is always that risk of being clipped in and falling.
DeleteGoodness gracious! How very scary. I'm glad that you're ok and I pray you continue to heal!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!! I'm getting better every day.
DeleteThis sounds so scary! Im so glad you are ok. One of the reasons I didnt want an outdoor bike was because of careless drivers and my own fear of falling off.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love to ride and go fast. Especially on the trails where there are no cars!
DeleteI'm glad you're OK. Sometimes we just need a good cry with everything going on.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny what brings it on!
DeleteOuch! Glad you are ok, but how scary. And I hope the kid drama calms down. I'm counting down the days until summer, hoping we can make it without kid drama.
ReplyDelete-MCM Mama
I wish you a drama free summer!
DeleteI'm very glad you are okay (though OUCH- that still looks really sore!) Road biking scares me- when I broke my leg, the surgeon said the breaks from cyclists in the summer are actually way more gruesome than the breaks from runners in the winter...So I'm glad it was not a break! What a rough start to the week. :(
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how gruesome the breaks are from a bike crash. I still can't believe I didn't break my arm. I am so lucky! And I know it!
DeleteI am so sorry for the mama drama & the crash. I've only had a couple of bad falls on the run, thankfully, but I definitely know that feeling when you know you're going down & there's nothing you can do about it.
ReplyDeleteI hope the week got better. I hope that you're not too sore. And I know you'll get back out there on that bike. Me -- well, this is exactly why I don't bike, but then again, even as a kid, I was really never overly fond of it.
Oh, I rode my bike nonstop when I was a kid, so naturally I still love it as an adult. But the drivers make me fearful. I try to stay off any busy roads if I can, but sometimes its unavoidable.
DeleteGlad you're ok. That was pretty scary.
ReplyDeleteI need those band-aids since I do fall a lot. LOL.
The bandaids are so awesome!
DeleteI was cringing as I read your words - ack Wendy!!! So glad you weren't hurt worse, or run over by a car. That had to have been beyond scary.
ReplyDeleteAs for those bandaids, they remind me of the blister bandaids, which I think are a miracle. I didn't know they made them in bigger sizes, but I'll definitely have to pick up a pack.
I'm going to keep the bandaids on hand too. They are really great!
DeleteI am so sorry to read about your bike crash. I don't ride bikes on the road, so I have never had a crash like that, but I have had many trail running wipeouts. I also am having my share of "Mama drama" lately. So unnerving! Hope you are feeling better now.
ReplyDeleteI hope we all survive our mama drama!
DeleteI'm so sorry about your crash Wendy. That was scary to even read. I'm so glad for the good samaritans who stopped and helped you, and that you weren't seriously injured/didn't have to go to the hospital. But kudos to you on taking it easy while you recovered, both physically and mentally.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found some good band aids and that your bike is ok too, and hope you can replace the shirt.
I have so much running gear that I'm probably ok not replacing it. Unless InkNBurn takes pity on me and sends me one...
DeleteSo sorry about the mama drama. It can be so tough. Your bike accident sounds so scary. I'm glad you weren't hurt. Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteIt's always a risk, riding the bike. I'm hoping that the rest of my rides this year are uneventful.
DeleteI'm so sorry. Reading this brings back my own crash, except I don't have memory of the actual crash. Just waking up laying in the street and watching people rush around. I hope you can catch a break with the mama drama. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI know your crash was a lot worse than mine. I think about that and I'm grateful to have spared the worst. I'm still a little anxious about getting back on the horse, I mean bike! The mama drama? That is another thing I have no control over. It's like watching a train wreck.
DeleteOh wow! Wendy, I'm so glad you are ok. How freakin' scary! I would be a lot anxious about getting back on the bike, too. Crashing is one of my biggest fears...or getting hit by a car.
ReplyDeleteI'm not as scared about riding as I am about riding on the road. I know I'll be extra cautious once I get out there again. It's raining today, so I won't be riding to work. Whew!
DeleteYikes - that is so scary! I'm so sorry to hear about your crash, but thank goodness you were okay. I don't actually know how to ride a bike and now that I'm an adult, this is exactly what I'm afraid of. :(
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! I have been riding my bike since I was little--that's all we did growing up. I'm relaxed on the paths but riding on the road is unnerving, the way people drive around here.
DeleteOuch! Road rash is so painful, but you're right...it could have been much worse. Glad you are taking it slow and healing up. My worst falls (from a bike and a horse) both involved almost running over a snake...but I'd take a snake over an angry motorist any day, ugh.
ReplyDeleteHa! When I was little, I was riding my bike on the path between my house and my cousin's house and there was a snake on the path. I threw my bike at it and ran all the way home! I wouldn't go back to get my bike either. My dad had to go get it. I've never seen a snake here in suburbia. Not to say they don't exist, but if they do, they're not making their prescence known!!!
DeleteOh it broke and my reply went away. Sorry about the offspring; sorry about the crash. Thank you for the wound care info and I will def see if those plasters are available here, unless they're hypoallergenic, which I'm allergic to somehow (I know, I know). Take care!
ReplyDeleteOh, you know blogger is quirky...
DeleteThe bandages are latex free but that's all I know.
Scary. After the wounds scab, put honey on them. It will keep them from getting too dry. It is sticky, so best to bandage over them, but it really works. Keeps it from scarring too.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that about honey on the wounds. I think these bandages do something similar, which is to keep the wounds from drying out and scarring. I just want them to heal. The knee wound is a challenge.
DeleteSorry about the crash and well everything. I hope this week is better. Thanks for the bandaid review, I'll have to check those out.
ReplyDeleteI just want this knee to heal!
DeleteWo, that's scary! I haven't' had a wipe out on my bike yet, but my twin sister did, and boy was she glad she had a helmet! I'm a new cyclist, and I find driving on the road very scary for that exact reason. I'm lucky to have many paths around that I can bike on, and I haven't tried clips but it just sounds too scary for me!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have the clips when I first got my road bike, but I finally took the plunge and I love them! Except when I can't get my feet out in time.
DeleteOMG!! How absolutely terrifying and awful to lie there just hoping cars would stop. I am so glad you are okay (relatively) and that you were strong enough to write this up. Sending you lots of virtual hugs from Botswana and I pray this week is a lot better. At least you have been able to run. As for the mama drama, I really hope your son does get his act together. Lots of love from Shathiso at www.thegaboronerunner.com
ReplyDeleteI'm taking any and all virtual hugs. I do feel better, thank you! I did a long run yesterday and it went well.
DeleteYikes! I don't ride bikes any more--I crashed when I was 12 in the dark ages when no one wore or thought of helmets. I hit the side of my head on the curb, and was knocked out. Here's the really scary part: I woke up three blocks from where I crashed with my bike on top of me and someone urgently asking me if I was OK. I'm still not sure how I staggered the 1/2 mile home.
ReplyDeleteReally glad you aren't hurt worse than you were.
I had my share of bike crashes as a kid--no helmets. That's the logic I hear from parents in my clinic when I ask the kids if they wear helmets. Seriously. I've crashed a few times as an adult and I have felt my head via my helmet hit the ground every time. Yes, I'm glad I'm ok too!
DeleteThat is so scary - thank goodness you are okay! I hope that getting back on the bike goes well - that must be a bit nerve-wrecking after the crash. I need to check out band-aids like those for the med bag in my backpacking supplies... I've taken a few falls while hiking that have left my knees scrapped up.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely keeping these bandaids on hand--they'd come in handy for hiking for sure!
DeleteSorry about all the drama this week! It's a sick feeling to realize you can't use your feet and you know you are going down no matter what. It's scary to think about it happening in traffic too! I'm glad you weren't more seriously hurt. I definitely need some of those bandaids on hand. Here's hoping for a nice, calm week...
ReplyDeleteExactly. I'm so glad nothing bad happened. Calm? What is that?
DeleteSo glad you are okay! My husband had a cycling accident last August and broke his arm and was off work for 8 weeks - not fun for anyone! He's an experienced rider but somehow managed to fall off his bike without knowing how it actually happened. Take care of yourself.
ReplyDeleteSounds like me! I don't know how I didn't break my arm but I'm grateful that I didn't. Is your husband riding again?
DeleteI’m so sorry about the crash. I totally understand being upset too. I think crying is a normal response and for so many reasons. I often ride or run with things on my mind ; it’s a way to work through things even just temporarily. I’m very glad you are ok in any case !
ReplyDeleteI had a bad bike crash in Cornwall (UK) a few years ago. I was flying down a hill and a golden retriever who was NOT on a leash ran in front of me at the last moment. I’m grateful I had a helmet on. I’ve been a bit afraid of dogs since. I had quite some bruises and scrapes but like you nothing broken.
When I was a child, our black lab ran in front of my bike when I was going down our driveway. It was a hill and it was gravel. Maybe that's why nothing bad happened but scrapes.
DeleteSo glad you are okay! I've fallen on the bike trail but there was no fear of being hit by a car.Ive fallen while running too. Im definitely getting those hydroseal bamd-aids...I'm sure I'll need them at some point. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHope the family drama settles down.
I thought we were done with drama but it's like a smoldering fire. It keeps flaming up.
DeleteOh no, that crash sounds so scary! I'm glad you're ok for the most part and there were people willing to help out nearby. I hope the pain goes away soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm healing but not as quickly as I'd like!
DeleteYikes! But glad you're relatively OK. Glad some folks stopped to be sure of that. Your ride otherwise looked gorgeous
ReplyDeleteIt's a really pretty trail. Too bad I have to ride on the road to get there.
DeleteI'm so glad you're ok! That's scary. I'm also glad that some people are nice enough to stop and help. I hope you feel good and get back to riding again soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm running, so there's that. Hopefully I'll be back on the bike next week.
DeleteOh my goodness, so glad you are relatively OK! Hope you are completely healed soon.
ReplyDeleteMe too! The healing is going slow but every day is better.
DeleteOh, Wendy, I'm so glad you're okay! I don't have the shoes that clip in and this is exactly why I'm nervous to try them. I'm afraid it might be too late to try it for me, but who knows...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the linkup!
It's never too late! I do like the clip in shoes but this was my biggest fear.
DeleteThat bike crash sounds absolutely horrifying but I am glad that there were some kind motorists that stopped to help you. I don't understand why drivers are such assholes when they see bikers - it really gets under my skin and I see it all the time, especially in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand it either, but the drivers are assholes to cars as well, so there's that. It's just dangerous and I always think, how would they feel if they hit me? Maybe they wouldn't care and that's really scary to think about.
DeleteI'm sorry about the crash, I'm glad you're ok and people stopped to help!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteYEOWCH! Dratted electronics always causing problems. It is hard to just let something happen and not react until you are some place safe you can stop. Glad you are ok and it wasn't made worse by an angry impatient driver. I went through a spell of dropping water bottles and just learned to let them go, and to slowly stop and go back and get them. There was nothing I could do while moving. I love those hydroseal bandages. During my episodes of falling while running I used them exclusively on my knees. They kept out the crud and helped heal the gashed up spots. I'm glad I have a few left in the package and falling while running seems to have stopped. Hope the next bike ride is better!
ReplyDeleteYeah, well I'm not going to have my phone on the handlebars anymore.
DeleteMy heart rate increased just reading about your crash. I've had a few and Les has had some epic ones (including being airlifted once.) Glad you're okay.
ReplyDeleteWe have learned to keep wounds covered - definitely the way to go vs. scabs! We haven't tried the HydroSeal bandages, sounds like we need to.
I'm so nervous about a bad crash--altho this was pretty bad, it was only my skin. Glad I'm ok too! Yikes to the airlift!
DeleteLes' was just skin, too (including ALL the skin on his lower left cheek.) He passed out when the paramedics were with him so they decided to airlift him. Xrays showed a stray piece in his skull. Turned out it was a rock that got trapped between his head and the board. Never a dull moment.
DeleteSo much drama with these crashes! Glad he's ok.
DeleteGIRL!! I could not believe the title of your post and the post itself as I fell while running this weekend and am really banged up. I am so sorry that happened, glad you are healing. Very scary. Unfortunately, I am out for awhile as I tore my hamstring. So pissed right now.
ReplyDeleteBeth! I am so sorry to hear about your wipeout. I can't believe you tore your hamstring. Of course I want the details. You've been running so well. That just sucks.
DeleteHoly bike crash! The hubs started riding just a couple weeks ago and has crashed HARD once and was run off the road just yesterday, while I was on the phone with him! I am glad that we use the "find my friend" app when he is riding in the dark and in the morning - I can always be sure he got to work in one piece. I love those band-aids. I have found a couple different sizes and use them all the time!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe your hubs has been run off the road. I hope he's ok.
DeleteI'm just so grateful that you're okay! Bike crashes are so scary, especially when you're in traffic. Thank goodness everyone was able to stop in time and I'm pretty sure the nice drivers who stopped to help top the nasty guy who couldn't wait for a bike to cross. The one time I crashed it was because a car turned in front of me and I had to lay my bike down. I was okay but my wheel was bent. My husband has had some bad ones though. Broke a bunch of ribs one time and his scapula another!
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to say that I'm sorry you're having mama drama. If you ever need to talk, I have an ear. Remember from my very first comment here years ago, I've been through similar. <3
DeleteUgh to the broken bones. I'm so grateful that I got away with road rash. Yes, the drivers were so nice and that just made me cry. It reminded me that 90% of people are decent and the other 10% make it bad for everyone!
DeleteI may take you up on that offer...lets see how court goes this week.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what's going on with your son, but I can only imagine how your heart must hurt for what's going on. I hope that with time, he will find his way.
That crash sounds so scary. I'm so glad you're alright and also that so many people stepped up to help you. It really goes to show you that people are good, deep down. Be safe. <3
We thought he was finding his way and then he made a bad decision. I hope that it all turns out ok for him. Thanks for your kind words and hug!
DeleteOh Wendy!!! I'm so sorry to hear about your crash and your mama drama. So many huge hugs to you. <3 <3 <3
ReplyDeleteTaking any and all hugs. I just want everything to heal up!
DeleteI'm so glad that you're ok overall! So sorry to hear about your bike accident but I'm glad that the approaching drivers were good people! I hope you heal up soon! <3
ReplyDeleteMe too!!!
DeleteOUch, OUch, Ouch! While I have fallen a couple of times from my bike ...it was nothing like that. I'm so glad that it wasn't worse and that the traffic stopped!!!! Eeek..that really could've been BAD! I love those hydro seal bandages ..have used them several times. In regards to your son ....just know that you're not alone in that situation. One of mine has struggled to 'find his way' and been the source of many a sleepless night, heartache and tears for me. Hang in there... there are better days ahead! Love and hugs!
ReplyDeleteI've fallen before too and it was nothing like this. This was the fall that I've dreaded--the "I'm falling and I can't unclip" fall. Ok, got that out of the way. It better never happen again...
DeleteOh gosh! I'm so glad that you are okay! I'm always nervous when my husband goes for long rides, especially when I know he'll be sharing the road with cars - not because I don't think he's a good rider, but because you can't always trust the cars to stop. I hope you are replacing your helmet! I'm still trying to get my husband to replace his after he took a spill on a wet wooden bridge.
ReplyDeleteI know I need to do that. It's on my to do list..
DeleteYikes! that is super scary. I'm glad it wasn't any worse. I've had some friends take some nasty spills on their bikes. Heal up and get back to it! You got this.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a protective coating I could spray on my skin so I don't have to deal with road rash ever again!
DeleteOh wow. So sorry to hear that you crashed on your bike but so so glad you are ok and that there were nice people there to make sure you were alright.
ReplyDeleteJust waiting for everything to heal up!
DeleteYikes, what a scary experience! I’m so glad that you weren’t hurt more than you were. Thank goodness for the few nice people left out there who take the time to check in on the well being of complete strangers.
ReplyDeleteWell, I was laying in the road in front of their cars, so there's that...
DeleteSo scary!!! I'm glad you're okay, Wendy, and I'm so glad someone was able to help... Heal up quick!!!
ReplyDeleteI"m healing but not quick enough!!
DeleteOh Wendy I am so sorry this happened and I am so glad you are okay. THANK GOODNESS the motorists stopped and you were not hit. Thank goodness they were kind and helped you. That must have been so scary.
ReplyDelete
