Last week, I asked for sunshine and Mother Nature delivered. It wasn't especially warm--Lake Michigan is to blame for that--but I can't complain. Everything is in bloom, and I enjoyed lots of time outside soaking it all in. I can't get enough!
Did I say lots of time outside? Read on...
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: walk Lake Geneva Wisconsin footpath 22.2 miles/1200 ft
Monday: Yoga with Adriene
Tuesday: Fluid running
Wednesday: trail run 5.5miles
Thursday: Strength training
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: work/rest/lunch with my boys
On Sunday, I joined two of my running friends for a bucket list adventure: tackling the 22 mile Lake Geneva footpath. This path was originally a trail connecting Pottawatomi villages. After the Civil War, the area became a summer resort for wealthy Chicago families. As the area became settled, a law was passed that the trail must be maintained and open to the public. The trail links the 3 villages on the lake: Lake Geneva, Williams Bay, and Fontana.
I've been boating on Lake Geneva, but being up close and personal, aka in the homeowners' front yards, gave us a different perspective of the stately homes that line the lake. You cannot believe the size of most of these homes and the beautiful landscaping that enhances them. This was an absolutely amazing experience--I took a ton of photos, but they don't do it justice. The weather was perfect for this adventure.
We wrapped it up at Scoops, a bar in downtown Lake Geneva, enjoying an ice cold Spotted Cow and a burger. And yes, our feet hurt!!! This truly was an experience that rivaled any marathon I've run. It deserves a post of its own. But alas...this is all you get.
On Monday, I had to DNS my strength class. I did not think my legs would appreciate more leg work. Instead, I did 2 Yoga with Adriene classes: one for the lower body and one for the feet. I felt so much better, which was good, because I had to go in to work for a meeting. Fluid Running on Tuesday was the icing on the cake.
I felt pretty good on Wednesday and decided to try out my legs and feet on the trails. It was a beautiful morning in the 60s, which was such a treat! I promised myself I would take it easy and I did. I was definitely more fatigued than normal. Not a problem because there was so much to stop and take photos of. Flowers and mushrooms were popping up everywhere. I didn't see a lot of deer--I'm wondering if we'll see babies soon--but I did see the twins at one point. This was just a nice, easy tour of the woods. I'll take it.
Thursday was strength work, and the auxiliary strength workout focused on the upper body. I'm seeing progress!
Set 1 4 rounds: :40 KB Gorilla rows using (30->35#)/:10 transition/:40 DB bridged chest press (15->25# alternating arms) :30 rest
Set 2 4 rounds :40 seated single arm landmine press (35->45#BB)/:10 transition/:40 single arm landmine row (45->60# BB) :30 rest

Set 4 4 rounds :40 banded chin-ups/:10 transition/ :40 medball plank tucks, :30 rest This time I was able to do 5 chin-ups each round using the green band.
I headed out Friday morning to a beautiful sunrise and cool temperatures. My legs felt light-yay! and fully recovered from last Sunday's 22 mile adventure. Wearing my Brooks Hyperion Max 2, I flew down the bike path and back home. My last 2 miles were my fastest, with a 'blistering' 8:45 on mile 6. It made me happy, and I may have done a little happy dance in front of my house when I finished. There will be a day when I can no longer run, but Friday was not that day!
Off the road...
After work on Saturday, I drove to the city to meet the boys and my future DIL for lunch at an old favorite of the hubs and mine, Hopleaf. Before we had children and were living in the city, we often went to this gastropub, which features Belgian beers and cuisine. We still like to go there and the boys had never been, so it was a perfect choice! We had a great afternoon! Of course, I miss them already...
Chicago has gone completely crazy since the announcement of the election of the new pope, Pope Leo XIV. He's a native of Chicago, supposedly a Cubs fan--or is it the White Sox, and the first American pope ever. I'm no longer a practicing Catholic, but Catholicism is part of who I am, and I was excited about this news. We watched The Conclave a few weeks ago--I highly recommend it--and it made watching the actual process of electing a new pope more meaningful. I hope Pope Leo can continue the legacy set by his predecessor, Pope Francis. Meanwhile, we have lots of memes ...
How was your week? What's on your bucket list? Are you enjoying lots of time outside? Have you ever done a happy dance after a great run? What are your plans for Mother's Day, if you celebrate? Tomorrow my sister and I are going out to dinner with our parents.
Wow this homes on Lake Geneva are massive! What a cool experience to do that trail with friends. I can see why your legs were sore the next day!
ReplyDeleteI was raised Catholic, too, but have changed faiths. But a new pope is exciting. I hope he continues Francis’ legacy of being more inclusive and focusing on helping those less fortunate. We started to watch Conclave but it will take us 3-4 nights to get through it since I go to bed quite early! I have heard it is excellent!
8:45 is so speedy!!! Way to go!!
We watched Conclave in a single setting and really enjoyed it! I heard that the Vatican had the cardinals watch it before the actual conclave!
DeleteI saw so many great Chicago pope memes! Looks like you had a great week of outdoor fun and sweat this week. Happy Mother’s Day to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope you're enjoying your Mother's Day!
DeleteIt is a great time of year to be outside — you’ve got to enjoy it while it is nice.
ReplyDeleteI’m not Catholic or from Chicago, but am enjoying the Pope Leo memes.
The memes are hilarious and a nice break from the Trump memes, lol
DeleteYour run along Lake Geneva sounds lovely and lunch with your running friends afterward made for a perfect morning.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a run, it was a hike, but thank you.
DeleteI definitely heard Pope Leo is a Cubs fan!
ReplyDeleteI could have read an entire, very long post about your Lake Geneva adventure. I LOVE escapades like that. It looks so beautiful, and those houses... I could look at them all day. I have questions! How long did it take you? Did you carry all your food and water, or was there a place to stop and replenish? I'm already plotting how I could do this route someday (since I WILL be up in the Chicagoland area these next couple of years!)
Happy Mother's Day!
I'm glad to know there would be at least one reader who would appreciate a full recap! ;p To answer your questions, it took about 7h 45m to walk the whole think. It would have been hard to run because of the terrain changes. I wore my hydration vest (and drank every drop of the 1.5 liters!) and brought a sandwich, a Bob's PBJ bar, and almonds. Ate them all. We walked through 2 towns-Williams Bay and Fontana and you could definitely stop for lunch or snacks. There were public bathrooms in both towns; we were also fortunate to find portapotties at the boat launches along the way. Let me know if you're visiting and want to do it!
DeleteWell done on your tour of Lake Geneva, Wendy - those houses are huge and absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteOf course, I couldn’t resist comparing it to the original Lake Geneva in Switzerland - that one edges it out in size, with over 103 miles of shoreline. Maybe one day you’ll make it over to Switzerland and we can do a multi-day hike/run around it together!
Your running is going so well - what a strong week! And such a lovely way to wrap it up, spending time with your sons and daughter-in-law! 😃
I knew the 'real' Lake Geneva was way bigger than the Wisconsin version. I'd love to visit Switzerland--but you'd have to really slow down to go with me!
DeleteThat tour sounds amazing! What beautiful homes indeed! What a great week of running and how nice to have time with your family. Happy Mother's Day!! And yes I love all the new Pope memes. I echo your sentiments and hope he can continue all that Pope Francis was able to do.
ReplyDeleteMaybe even more--he seems pretty outspoken against the current regime and crimes agains humanity. Fingers crossed!
DeleteWell in Florida it was easy to be outside all the time (it rained everyday back home).
ReplyDeleteWe took a boar ride in Naples and had a similar experience admiring all the huge houses.
I've gone out to dinner for two weeks straight... I'm looking forward to staying home.
Happy Mother's Day!
A boar ride? I'm sure you meant boat, lol. I've done the boat ride on Lake Geneva but standing in their front yards, looking at the homes from that perspective was a completely different experience!
DeleteEnjoy your home cooking!
Nice week for you! That 22-mile hike really sounds tough, but fun and quite scenic. I’m all about getting outside, daily. This last week was total perfection ;-)
ReplyDeleteToday is amazing too! Happy Mother's Day Kim!
DeleteYour Lake Geneva adventures looks amazing! Those houses are out of this world! Sort of throws a wrench in my house hunting plans, you know?
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day to you. We just had my parents over, but it's been such a busy weekend. I'm now ready for bed, 100%.
I know what you mean--it was hard to return to reality after that1
DeleteThat Lake Geneva hike sounds really cool. I love looking at houses like that! We were out of cell service for many days on our camping trip, but we did have service when the pope was announced. That's about the only news I got in the past week!
ReplyDeleteThat was news worth waiting for!
DeleteLove your walk, those homes are amazing! I have friends at parkrun, sisters, the daughter of one of them got married last weekend and they'd had trouble choosing a honeymoon destination but had finally settled on a tour of Italy. Firm Catholics, they were in the square when the white smoke went up!!
ReplyDeleteThat would have been an amazing experience! Watching it on TV, I had goosebumps!
DeleteThat looks like an interesting trail, nice that they've made it public. I can imagine you were sore a few days after that walk. Those houses certainly look like something for wealthy people! I assume people still live there? Everything looks very well looked after.
ReplyDeleteWe're having some really lovely weather (although a bit windier this week) and I've been outside a lot, especially over the weekend. It's been such a treat! It's supposed to be dry and quite warm for the next week.
We saw The Conclave this weekend!
The houses are mostly summer homes, if you can believe it! I'd love to see what their regular homes look like!
DeleteYour Lake Geneva adventure looks amazing! We're finally getting some decent weather here so trying to be outdoors as much a possible!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great Mother's Day!
