Stormy Weather

Wow, did we get rain this week! Along with the rain, we had severe storms every night. This week alone, we've received almost 4 inches of rain locally — some areas had much more —and there is flooding everywhere. It's been wild. After a final round of storms on Friday night, the summer-like conditions moved on out, and we're back to cool, calm weather again.

After being off the past 3 weeks to care for my mom (and dad) and prepare for her return home, I resumed work this week. I thought I'd be starting with a full schedule, but we are in a brief seasonal lull and a break in the high demand for appointments. It was the perfect way to return after the recent period of high stress. Was it nice to be back? Yes and no. I found it difficult to focus completely on the job. Despite some really good runs and workouts this week, I still have a lingering unease that I can't shake. Oddly enough, after seeing 3 patients on Saturday morning, the power went out, and we had to cancel clinic for the rest of the morning.

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: Ice Age Trail hike/Parfrey's Glen 8.25m/1300 ft
Monday: strength training
Tuesday: Yoga with Adriene
Wednesday: trail run 6.1 miles
Thursday: strength training
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: rest

Still up at the lake house, I woke my son at 7 am on Sunday morning to start our hiking adventure. He complained that it was too early, lol, but got up and by 8 we were on the ferry, crossing the Wisconsin River. Our first stop: Parfrey's Glen in Baraboo, Wisconsin. You've seen me share photos from this magical place before. He'd never been there. We pulled into the parking lot, only one other car there, and enjoyed the solitude--and occasional thunder-- in this magical place!

After that, we hiked the adjacent Sauk Point segment of the IAT. This is a very technical segment of the IAT with exposed tree roots and tumbled rocks strewn throughout the woods and across the trails. We even saw a deer--something I haven't seen very often up there.  After our hike, we stopped for lunch at a local brewpub. I love this segment and enjoyed the companionship of my youngest son. There's nothing better!

Monday's strength training was a repeat of last week's: snatches. This week, we were given 15 minutes to do 4 sets of 3 full snatches, including an overhead squat after each one, from the power (floor) position. The prescribed weight was 60% of 1RM; I did mine with an empty barbell again, which is 35#.

For our accessory work, Coach put 15 minutes on the clock, and we did 4 rounds of:
-8-12 dumbbell (50#) deadlifts
-: 20-second dot drill
-tempo pull-ups (strict) or body weight rows
-100m sprint

We had terrible storms overnight on Tuesday--the hail was so large, it sounded like someone was dropping rocks on our roof! We ended up with over 2 inches of rain locally; other places received much more. On Wednesday morning, when I parked at the trailhead, it was still lightly raining. I anticipated lots of puddles and standing water. I didn't expect all the deer to be out! As soon as I stepped on the trail, I spied several in the woods. Along with puddle jumping, that would be the theme for my run. I mostly stuck to the main trail, because I knew the single tracks would be filled with water. I found that to be true when I took a detour through the woods. Despite the very wet conditions, I enjoyed this run so much. Everything is turning green. I spotted some wildflowers popping up as well as a few mushrooms. The air was warm, so the rain felt good.

Thursday morning, it was back to the gym--this time we did cleans and jerks. In the past, I have struggled with jerks, but today they went well. We did a thorough warm up and then were instructed to complete 4 sets of 3 cleans and jerks within 15 minutes. I started with 45# and after 2 successful sets, moved up to 55#. I was really pleased with these, as was SJ!

For the accessory work, we had 4 rounds of:
-8 dumbbell (25#) bench presses
-1 lap farmers carry (45# KB)
-1 length tire flips (307#)
-5 seated box jumps

I ran in the Friday morning fog and witnessed a really cool sunrise! Conditions were favorable for a speedy run, albeit very humid, and I took full advantage. However, my legs were fatigued from my workout the day before, forcing me to push hard on the last couple of miles. This run was such a satisfying start to my day!

Off the road...

On Thursday, I drove out to my parents' to take my mom to the ortho for her follow-up. Earlier in the day, she had told my sister that she 'fell again' and was having a lot of pain. No one from the agency was aware of it. When I arrived at their house, I asked her about it, but my dad interrupted — there was no new fall. I reminded her about the original fall. Oh right... dementia. I'm learning that you have to dig deep before jumping to conclusions.

While my mom kept complaining of pain, she was fairly zipping around with her walker. She easily transferred to my car. I kept marveling at this--while she doesn't think she's getting better, she is! The ortho reassured her that the pain would be present until the fracture is healed. We will go back in a month for a recheck.

I thought we had reached a new place of understanding and acceptance with my dad--don't get me wrong, he keeps asking me how much longer we'd need the caregivers-- but on Friday, while at work, I received a call from the agency telling me that my dad tried to take my mom out of the house to the store. He also told the caregiver she could go home for the rest of the day. Today I had another phone call with him, badgering me to remove the caregivers from their home. It's exhausting.

Thank goodness for the good things happening in my life! On Saturday, my son and daughter-in-law had a gender reveal with her family. They took some professional photos, but I don't have them yet. Here's a snapshot I took of the reveal:

How was your week? Have you been experiencing excessive rain and severe weather? Do you run in the rain? Have you ever been to a gender reveal?

More to come!

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I didn’t intend to run in the rain this week, but got caught be a few lingering Chicago showers.

I guess the news on your Mom is good; hopefulyl your Dad will accept the things he cannot change ….

Congratulations on your future grandbabby boy!

    1. He and I are going to northern Wisconsin in a few weeks on another hike! I'm loving it!

  3. I am so over this weather! We've spent more than our share of time in the basement this week as the tornado sirens sounded. All the rain really stirred up the pollen too.
We are in a similar situation with my MIL. She sends her caregiver home and accuses FIL of having an affair with her. Last week 1-1/2 quarts of fluid was drained from her lungs. I swear if its not one thing it's another.
I've never been to a gender reveal but I am so thrilled for you and your whole family. Such exciting times!

    1. I'm so sorry to hear about your situation with your inlaws. This is not easy. The gender reveal was about as low key as they come-THANK GOODNESS!. It was actually a lot of fun to find out with all her relatives!

  4. after reading Coco's post, I expected rain in yours.

we had rain but luckily I was able to walk or run and not get wet.

I don't run in the rain unless I get caught but I have run plenty of wet races.

Congrats. My DIL did not do a gender reveal. But congrats. Boys seem to run in your family. LOL

  5. How exciting- a grandson!!!!! The only gender reveal I've had is when we did one for our kitten, hee hee. She was so little when we got her we weren't positive of the gender until I took her to the vet. Then I didn't tell the rest of the family, but told one friend, who made cupcakes and brought them over (with pink filling) for a gender reveal. It was ridiculous and fun.
You have some amazing photos here. I LOVE the one of you in the gym doing the cleans and jerks. Powerful and strong!!! And the one of you running in the fog is also very cool.
Sorry to hear your dad is still being... a man. WHY do they get so difficult??? I'm glad your mom is getting stronger though.

    1. Right? Why does caregiving have to be so complicated? Your gender reveal sounds so cute--I love it!

  6. What a beautiful trail - no wonder you wanted to take your son there for a hike!

I'm sorry things are still difficult with your dad, but happy to hear that your mom is improving and zipping along with her walker.

You're following in my tracks, Wendy, two sons and the first grandchild is a boy! :-) I've never been to a gender reveal party. They weren't a thing back in the day and my son and d-i-l opted to be surprised.

    1. It was very low key compared to what we see on social media! It was fun!

  7. A boy! Congrats! I have never been to a gender reveal. We found out with your 2nd but did not do anything fun or clever to find out. The nurse told me on the phone and that was that. Ha. But it was summer of 2020… I had thought it would be fun to do a golf ball reveal with my husband and our son but Phil said he just wanted to know without any pomp and circumstance which is on par with his personality. Ha.

I can see why you feel unsettled. Your dad is being so problematic. But what can you do with a grown *ss man. I imagine the agency sees this kind of behavior. But gosh this is all so incredibly hard!!

We had a bit of pea-sized hail but otherwise avoided the extreme weather. We’ve had a good amount of rain but not too much luckily. It has been so cold lately, though! When I was training for marathons, I would run on the rain. Now I am more of a fair weather runner unless it’s a really light rain.

    1. I felt like I was more of a fair weather runner in the winter! But besides the bitter cold, I blame the wind. The weather here in the midwest has been so wacky.

  8. Yay on baby boy!! I have never been to a gender reveal party. It sounds fun, especially if cake is involved! :) I remember the gender reveal for my son. My husband and I opened an envelope (in the privacy of our car) and then said "A boy? I don't know how to take care of a boy!" haha!!! It all worked out though. He seems fine. ;)

    1. Your son does seem fine! I had 3 sisters growing up, and maybe because of that I wanted boys. I thoroughly love being a boy mom and can't wait to be a boy grandma!

  9. Lots of rain here as well, and the humidity has been wreaking havoc on my hair (first world probs). There’s standing water everywhere. I think it’s supposed to stay “dry” for a few days now, and the temps are supposed to creep back up a bit. This weekend was SO cold and windy!

  10. What a beautiful area for hiking! I'm glad your return to work wasn't too stressful - it can be hard to come back to a normal healthcare environment with all the chaos, even after a restful holiday.
That's a lot of rain! Here it's mostly been windy lately but we're having some superb weather now.
I'll have to look up the difference between jerks, cleans and snatches, I really have no idea! Great work in the gym with whatever they were, and the tire flips look so fun!

    1. Jerks are similar to push presses, except you have a split stance.

  11. Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive grandson! I've been to a couple gender reveals, and they are always so cute!

You did a great job in the gym this week. Between that and your running, Im glad you're getting time for yourself.

That uneasy feeling is the worst. I get it from time to time for some reason.

And I'm sorry your dad is still being so difficult. It's got to be so hard.

    1. I just wish he could accept what is happening; wishful thinking isn't helpful right now and neither are daily phone calls to ask when things will get back to normal.

  12. Such very cool photos from Parfrey's Glen! Especially that one with your son - his shirt matches the surroundings!
I've never done a tire flip - so these weigh 307 pounds?? Crazy!
Have you ever tried a Hyrox session? I would love to try one - with all the running in between, I think runners would have an advantage!

    1. I would love to try Hyrox! Earlier this year, our gym surveyed us to see if there was interest. I haven't heard anything since, but am definitely interested!

  13. Congrats on the reveal, you'll have that to look forward to. Some happy to offset the difficulties. Why is your Dad not wanting help for your Mom? My Dad was the same way. I didn't understand his fighting what was clearly needed then, so curious why you think your Dad doesn't want the help. It's all so mentally exhausting when they don't realize you're helping. Glad you're able to get out and enjoy nature and get your runs in. I know that helps you keep your sanity. Good looking son you have. That's pretty special you were able to have such nice one on one time. Hang in there.

    1. Thanks so much Sandy for your support. I'm grateful for the good news to offset the horribleness of what is happening with my parents. This behavior is not surprising, but it is extreme for my dad. His behavior is self-serving. I am mostly focused on my mom, wanting to ensure a complete recovery from her injury.
