What a week, indeed! So much drama. Family strife, environmental threats, and another fall for my mom kept my anxiety in the red zone. Surprisingly, I'm sleeping well, but I wake up exhausted. My heart rate has been high on my runs. But those runs are giving me what I need: a respite from the craziness of my life right now, and I am oh so grateful for that.

It was 49F on Sunday morning! We were still up at the lake, and I wanted to ski. Even though I have a half wetsuit, my boat driver (the hubs) wasn't excited about driving in the cold. So off I went to Gibraltar Rock — a run I tried to do 2 weeks ago, but was stymied by that corneal abrasion incident. It was a gorgeous morning--bluebird skies and bright sunshine. Even better, I had the segment to myself. I've been feeling anxious lately and was looking forward to soaking in those views from the top as well as getting some endorphins. It was a wonderful run--I saw some pretty foliage, fun mushrooms, and a hairy woodpecker!
I also wanted to soak in that view for another reason. Less than a month ago, local residents learned that there were plans in the works to install 20 stories tall electrical towers across the area, including directly below Gibraltar Rock. The towers were being built across the state to provide energy to data centers in southern Wisconsin and Illinois. No one had been informed of this plan--it was as if the company was trying to sneak it in. These towers could be built in designated utility paths, but someone decided it would be better to use farmland, private property, and natural areas for this project. Make it make sense. There has been an uprising across the state, and I hope these efforts are not in vain. The grassroots efforts worked in Minnesota when there was a deal to begin copper mining in the Boundary Waters, a deal that has since been canceled. We need to protect our natural resources!

Monday's strength work continued with the pyramid scheme (lol):
25 min on the clock; we had to increase by 1 rep per round until halfway and then go back down by 1 rep per round:
1 dumbbell press (15# each hand) + 2 barbell (35#) upright rows + 3 single leg v-ups + 4 slamball good mornings (30#)
I did 8 full rounds before the halfway mark. Reflecting on this workout, I could have gone heavier with all the weights. When I was setting up, I wasn't sure how I'd do with heavier weights on the higher reps.
On Wednesday, I took advantage of a break between raindrops to run my local trails. I had no goal but to shake off the pervasive anxiety that I've been struggling with this week--the family drama has amped up again. Grateful for feeling good, I ran hard and only stopped for photos. The sun even peeked out for a while! Summer is winding down, and signs of fall were everywhere!
Thursday's strength training was another pyramid scheme :P
On the clock 20:00, increase 1 rep each activity per round:
1 barbell bicep curl (35#) + 2 Push Ups + 3 AbMat situps + 4 Slamball (20#) kickstand squats
I made it to 7 rounds by 10 minutes and finished a little before time was called.
I caught another beautiful sunrise on Friday morning. While the air was cool, it was really humid. My heart rate was high for this run, and I had to stop multiple times to walk. But even though it wasn't a great run, it was good enough to clear my head after the events of Thursday (see below).
Off the road...
I feel like a broken record--does this reference date me, lol?-- when I say that the family drama continued this week. Actually, things amped up this week after my youngest sister came to visit for a few days. She stayed with my parents and provided her perspective on their situation, which fired up the group texts. It was tense.
On Thursday, I took my mom to an appointment with the nurse practitioner at the geriatric practice. The appointment went well, and my mom really liked the NP. So did I. We left feeling happy, and on the way back to their house, I put on some music that my mom used to listen to when I was a child. It was a fun trip down memory lane, and we were singing along--not very well, which made us both giggle.
We were riding that high when we returned to their house. As we walked to the front door, my mom bounded up the brick paver stairs and, in the blink of an eye, tripped and fell on her face. As she does, she panicked. Her mouth was bleeding. One of her fingers was bent oddly, and I bent it back, snapping it into place. Yikes. I tried to calm her down and finally was able to convince her to roll over so I could get under her arms to lift her up. She told me no, but I used my nurse voice, had her put her feet flat on the ground, and yep, I got her up. We walked to the kitchen sink, and I had her rinse her mouth. I looked her over--she had a small laceration on her inner upper lip from her teeth. There were abrasions on her knees and ankles. Once I cleaned her up, I walked her to the couch, put her feet up, and gave her some Aleve. While she seemed ok, I offered to take her to the ER, but my dad promised me he would watch her and take her if anything seemed off. When I called later that evening, my mom and dad were drinking milkshakes that he made, and she sounded like her usual happy self.
This was a reality check for me--my mom is physically very strong, but the dementia has really affected her depth perception and judgment. I'm so glad I was there when it happened. I doubt my dad would have been able to lift my mom up and would have had to call an ambulance. I've talked to my mom and dad several times since this happened, and she sounds like herself. For that, I am relieved.
The discourse continues between my sisters, my dad, and me regarding the amount of care my mom needs at home. One could argue that this most recent fall is proof that my mom needs more supervision. But I was literally right behind her, and there was nothing I could have done to prevent the fall. My dad doesn't want someone in the home all the time. One of my sisters does. I don't know what the right answer is.
How was your week? Do you use running to help you 'outrun' stress? Have you had to make decisions about your parents with your siblings?
We're having flooding rains this weekend, and I don't even mind--I need some time off my feet.

Oh, I’m glad your mom’s fall wasn’t serious and she’s OK. Sorry the stress continues. It seems that the debate will go on for a while.
ReplyDeleteUgh on the data center power lines. They are coming for all of us.
We have to protect our resources!
DeleteYou aways see such cool mushrooms and birds on your runs! And yes, those views from Gibraltar Rock are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThose falls with our elderly parents are terrifying and when they fall, they're dead-weight. Glad you knew the right way to get your mom back on her feet!
I hope we don't lose that view!
DeleteI am glad to read that your mom is ok after her fall. I can concur that parents are very stressful! Mine are also pushing back on some of the extra help that my sister and I think they need. My dad pushes back so my mom appeases him and then they gets exhausted. It’s a cycle we are trying to prevent. There is only so much we can do and I’m trying to accept that.Anyway…I also underestimate how much I can lift sometimes and I am trying to keep notes for certain moves. I love the pyramid/ladder workouts!
ReplyDeleteI really like those workouts too!
DeleteMy FIL spent 2 nights in the hospital this week, so I can relate, Wendy. It's hard some days. We are fortunate that at almost 94 he doesn't have any dementia - he actually amazes me some times! But our bodies wear out and that's what we are dealing with. The falls are definitely the scariest.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I'd do without running when life is stressful!
I agree! Running has been there for all of my trials over the years. I'm so glad I still have it!
DeleteOof, that's really tough. Luckily, when I had to deal with my parents, my sister and I were in complete agreement over everything. I never even really thought about how much hard it would be if we were arguing with each other. I don't know what the answer is- as you said, you were right there when your mom fell and couldn't prevent it. But you were able to get her back up, which your dad couldn't do. Does he WANT to be in a position where he has to call an ambulance? Anyway... I'm sorry this is causing you so much stress.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beautiful, as always! Yes- what a lovely addition 20 foot high electrical towers would be. What makes me really sad is the fact that the people who are pushing for this- and are in power right now- just don't value nature and beauty (or art, or education... don't get me started). The direction our country is going in frightens me.
I'm right there with you, my friend. I find it fascinating when people just turn the other way. We'll never get these resources back!
DeleteOh no, not towers for data centres! Uff! I really hope the grassroots efforts succeed. Is there a group you can join to support the movement?
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about your mum’s fall! Thank goodness you were there. My dad has had a few falls too, although somehow he’s managed to catch himself every time. There’s only so much you can do without telling them to stop moving altogether, which obviously isn’t the solution!
This always reminds me of something one of my CrossFit coaches said: burpees are great practice for learning how to fall and get back up, and that will become increasingly important as we get older. I’ve taken my burpees much more seriously ever since! 😂
I don't know if I agree with that about burpees lol :p! I do a lot of one legged activities to work on my balance and core strength. And I have that wobble board too!
DeleteThere are local community meetings regarding the towers and facebook groups. I think spreading the word is something I can do!
Oh no, I'm so sorry bout your mom's fall - that sounds so scary! I can't believe you were able to bend her finger back into place - wow, so glad you were there to help out. But having tha thappen after the good mood you were all in on the car ride back, what an up and down for sure.
ReplyDeleteAs always, love your photos and I'm glad you're still getting outside and enjoying some great workouts in nature!
I'm so grateful to have access to these beautiful places! I swear, it's like a balm to the soul.
DeleteNo!! Not 20 story towers in that beautiful area! Gah. The data center expansion is so problematic in so many ways!! And I am so sorry to hear about your mom’s fall. I am glad you were there and could get her up/attend to her.
ReplyDeleteMy parents are both still in good health. God help us if something happens that requires sibling intervention because there are some BIG personalities in our families. It’s rare for me to get through a holiday without getting some sort of abusive text message. I don’t know what we would do if we had to band together and make a decision for our parents…
Yep, it's been pretty ugly! I'm glad you get it. Not glad you have to deal with it, tho!
DeleteTough situation... I don't have my parents around. My hubby has sibling and son and mil issues... I always say at least you have family!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, hope things improve for your mom but you have running, trails, new baby (soon)... good things!!
I'm leaning hard into those good things, too! :)
DeleteUgh, so sorry for the continued family stress. It’s’ great you’re able to get out to the trails to clear your mind. It’s fortunate you were there to immediately assist your mom after that scary fall!
ReplyDeleteI keep replaying it in my mind!
DeleteSorry about the family situation. And glad your mom's fall wasn't too serious. Sending positive vibes you'll find some middle ground everyone can be happy with when it comes to care.
ReplyDeleteA girl can hope...
DeleteOh, I'm sorry about the renewed drama and your mom's fall too. What a relief she didn't hurt herself other than some lacerations! I imagine some of these decisions are so multifaceted. Hope you can come up with something everyone is happy enough with.
ReplyDeleteAre you excited about fall, or sad that summer is over? I know you haven't had the best running conditions during the summer. So good for you to have the trails and being able to run, for many reasons but also for stress-relief! We had an incident here last night with a lot of added stress, mostly unrelated to what I wrote about in my post, and I just came back from a walk/run with some faster intervals. OMG that was wonderful.
Running has been the best stress reliever throughout my adult life!
