I didn't have a topic for today's post, in fact, I'm in kind of a blogging slump lately. I have a few drafts in the folder but I'm just not feeling those posts right now. I always have stuff on my mind, though. In the spirit of the Friday Five and keeping it brief, I thought I'd do a post of 5 random things.
So here's what's on my mind...
Hurricane Michael
And no, we aren't talking about my husband--although you should see my house right now. I probably should be cleaning it instead of blogging. Anyhoo, unless you live under a rock, you've heard all about Hurricane Michael and the devastation this storm left behind in the Florida Panhandle. The storm strengthened so rapidly that no one expected this. I've vacationed multiple times in that part of Florida--from driving through Apalachicola to St George Island with my family to that super fun girls weekend with Holly and blogging friends in her beach house in Panama City Beach. I have lots of memories there, but not as many as Holly. Yesterday was very worrisome with the storm making landfall not far from where her house sits on the Gulf. I am happy to report that her house is ok. I'm not at all happy when I see the photos of all the destruction down there. It's going to be a while before the region makes a comeback.
Such a fun weekend with running blogger friends! L-->R: Tricia, me, Karen, Marcia, Holly, Darlene; Judy in the back Missing from photo is MaryBeth |
Does She or Doesn't She?
Only her hairdresser knows. Those of us of a certain age--ahem--will remember the Clairol commercials that featured this tagline. So let's just say that I see my hairdresser every 4 weeks. Yesterday I while I was at the shampoo bowl, the assistant gave me the best scalp massage. It was like she was massaging away all my stress. She was excellent. It isn't always that way. You can tell by the way they handle the water sprayer. I never really thought about shampooing as a skill, but it really is. The worst by far was the assistant who kept me at the bowl for 30 minutes, shampooing and rinsing my hair. I felt trapped in the bowl. I tried to catch the eye of one of the stylists and eventually, she realized just how long I had been there. She took over and got me rinsed and out of the bowl quickly. The next day I woke up with a stiff neck and for a while after that, I had anxiety every time I had to get my hair washed.
Been there, had that happen |
...or in a hurry. This past week alone, I've dealt with more than one angry motorist. On Tuesday's bike ride, I pulled out from my street onto the frontage road. Behind me was a minivan, who very aggressively passed me once he turned too. I'm pretty sure he floored it because he roared off down the road, leaving me in a trail of exhaust. My dad used to call it "blowing out the carbon". Dude, I know where you live. The temptation to ride to his house and confront him was great, but I let it go. This happened to me twice this week while running. The worst was at bootcamp when we were running a 400m down the street. A guy quickly pulled up to the intersection we were crossing and tried to turn left in front of us. We stayed the course. I bet he had to wait a whole 30 seconds for us to pass, but when he did pull out, he also floored it as he passed us.

Lululemon did it to me again...they sucked me into another one of their virtual
like Donkey Kong... |
Guys, I baked yesterday. There's still laundry in the basket from Sunday and my house could use a good scrubbing, but we are making one last trek to Madison for my Badger's last home rugby game. He gave me a list of things to bring for him, like Tide Pods and ibuprofen. I put together a little care package for him including chocolate chip cookies. Not the healthy kind. The kind with butter and sugar. I have them all packed up and ready to go. Because if I left them out, they'd be all gone.
Any random stuff you want to share? Have you been affected by the latest hurricane? Is it me or does everyone have shampoo bowl phobia? What are we going to do about angry motorists?
Who's running the Ghost Race? Do you think Lululemon is going to scam the participants again like they did last winter? What would you put in a care package for your college student?
I'm linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday 5.
I see my hair dresser about once a year. I can't afford to color my hair around here, so I've just embraced the "sparkle". But my favorite part is the hair wash...

Coloring my hair is really my only indulgence. I can't afford not to do it!
DeleteI did the Ghost Race last year. I don't remember what the reward was but for sure it was not free swag. It' might have been a $20 voucher.
ReplyDeleteUgh. Don't tell me that! Where did you park?
DeleteObviously great minds think alike because I was worried about Holly's house, too. And of course my heart goes out to all who weren't as lucky. :(
ReplyDeleteGetting my hair shampoo'd is my favorite part of a haircut!
Bake or clean? Well, d'oh!
My big baking happens around Christmas when I make ALL THE COOKIES. The family loves it! But I guess when you go away to college, you get lovin from the oven...
DeleteI totally feel you on the hair washers. I also once got the worst stiff neck from someone. You can totally tell if they are sloppy with the sprayer then not a good massage. It's so disappointing when you know you are stuck there. I was going to do the Lulu ghost race but I don't like where it is either and it's too early. Let us know how it goes!
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence about the Ghost Race but it is a good excuse to run along the lakefront.
DeleteThanks for the update on Holly’s place. The devastation is horrible. I can’t stand scalp massages, although I don’t mind a good rinse with a sprayer. I hope Lulu lives up to its hype this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for Holly. It was really scary and sad all at once.
DeleteRandomly I had a hair appt yesterday and I think my girl felt bad for me and gave me the best massage too. I think my scalp has never been as clean.
ReplyDeleteThe storm destruction is awful. So scary. We were technically under a Tropical Storm Warning yesterday from it but it really wasn't that bad here. Some areas flooded again though.
Happy weekend Wendy!
When I was pregnant with my second, I couldn't lay back without passing out. I actually passed out in the dentist's chair! So when I had to get my hair done, I had to get it washed while standing over the bowl. Awkward!
DeleteReckless drivers drive me absolutely crazy! I understand that people have places to be, but taking an extra minute to slow down is not going to affect their day.
ReplyDeleteI always say that but it's almost like people want to beat you!
DeleteMotorists are crazy. when i was driving home yesterday, I turned right and merged with traffic, with a car coming up a fair distance behind me. Next thing I knew he was on my ass! I can't go any faster because of the cars in front of me!
ReplyDeleteI won't deny that I'm an aggressive driver but I sure don't harass runners or cyclists.
DeleteWe had been looking at flights to Panama City for the past month or more. Les has tons of family down there and Thanksgiving is a big deal (we try to go every other year.) All his family is safe (including 3 aunts in their 90s) but we won't be going this year. So much destruction, so unless we plan to be part of a work crew we'd just be in the way.
ReplyDeleteIt's just incredibly sad, isn't it?
DeleteWait, there's a healthy chocolate chip cookie? That seems like an oxymoron - chocolate chips cookies should taste like butter and sugar and chocolate and yes I'm wanting one now, LOL.
ReplyDeleteThat hurricane was incredibly horrible. I feel so bad for everyone affected.
You aren't hanging out with the indulgent-averse crowd, that's for sure! There are so many people making "healthy" versions of our favorite recipes. Sorry, but no....
DeleteI'm surprised to hear you are doing the Lululemon race again. I know last year people were disappointed in it. You'll have to let us know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see if I actually go...
DeleteLove your care package, just the thing, I'd imagine. I hate getting my hair cut as I'm so short-sighted and can't see what they're doing. And taking your glasses off for the hair wash - argh! My new hairdresser is excellent though and they look after my glasses and understand.
ReplyDeleteI also wear glasses (and contacts). I made the mistake of wearing my glasses to a color appointment and yep, my glasses got color on the ear pieces. Permanently. Now they have plastic sheaths they slide over them.
DeleteLoved seeing the picture of all of you running bloggers. Looks like a fun weekend! This must have been baking week. I baked an apple pie! I almost never bake anymore, cause it's just hubs and me at home. ON Tuesday, I got so hungry for apple pie, and I had apples, so...I just tried it with salted caramel vanilla ice cream after my long run. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI'll make a pie--I don't make my own crust so it's pretty easy to put together. Actually, cookies are easy too. It's the clean up that I don't like. Stupid, I know.
DeleteMy shampoo bowl phobia is always whether the water will be too hot or not hot enough. First world problems, right?
ReplyDeleteTruly!
DeleteI feel so bad for the panhandle! I grew up in Miami and my neighborhood was "the" Andrew neighorhood. I saw so many similarities in this storm - it got so strong so fast, and building codes were grandfathered in, so lots of older buildings not built to withstand such a strong storm. My heart goes out to everyone affected.
ReplyDeleteOmg that intro picture is everything bahahha. I'm planning to run the Ghost Race course tomorrow! Lulu always sucks me in.
