Runfessions --August

Say it ain't so! We've reached the end of August and summer is winding down. I'm not ready! August was a busy month--I think I packed in as much as I could. No regrets about any of it, but I do have some runfessions. Because there's always something to runfess...

Let's head into the runfessional so I can clear my sole. Pun completely intended.

I runfess... that there wasn't a lot of running this month. Even worse, I runfess that my lack of mileage doesn't really bother me.  I've been filling my time with other activities. Races? You can sign me up for a 5k. That's about all I've got right now...

I runfess... that I've been rocking a pretty good RBF in my running selfies. Clearly, I'm not enjoying the miles. I spent more time on one run trying to get a good selfie than I did anything else. And that's just wrong. #gamefacechallenge? It's on...

I couldn't even muster up a grimace for the selfie...
I runfess... that I'm enjoying strength training and CrossFit way more than running.  With all the heavy lifting I've been doing, calluses that have formed on the palms of my hands. Being a fidgety kind of gal, I find myself picking at the calluses during the day. They've gotten so annoying that I runfess..  I took matters into my own hands--literally. While I was at work this week, I took a scalpel and sliced them off. I had no problems cutting the calluses off, but that scalpel was sharp and I accidentally nicked part of my hand. It's a good thing I'm not a surgeon.

I runfess... that water selfies are hard! We set up my iPhone on a pier, using a water bottle as a tripod. That was the easy part...

I runfess... that as much as I love the more temperate weather we get in the fall, I'm sad to see summer winding down. This summer has been so much fun. I would enjoy a little more time on the water. Maybe the warm weather will linger into September? And no, I runfess... that I don't like pumpkin spice anything.

I don't like pumpkin spice. What do you have to runfess? /via @oldrunningmom @teamarcia #runchat #runner#runfessions

What would you runfess? Are you as sad to see the end of summer as I am? Or are you a pumpkin spice fan? Running selfies--are you good at them? Water selfies? Do you cut off your calluses? What races do you have lined up for the fall?

I'm linking up with Marcia, who hosts Runfessions and with Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness.

  1. OK, I can runfess that I'm struggling with my new reality of run-walking as a strategy from the start of runs, since I went on my anti-anxiety medication which has brought my blood pressure down but seems to bring my heart rate up when I exercise. Tuesday I ran then walked when I felt too "poundy" or just couldn't get energy up. Thursday I jeffed 2/.30 from the start. When I look at my stats I have high heartbeat on the Tuesday run and it's much more controlled on the Thursday one. Doc things I will adapt and if not, she will change my blood pressure med to one the mental health team use because of this issue. I'm glad she's on-side and wants to keep me running but I feel a bit crappy at the moment. Running with Jenny yesterday and we got a "keep going, loves" from a bloke as we took a walk break as scheduled. Ugh.

Anyway love your pumpkin spice (sort of!) and yay to doing such strong stuff you're getting calluses!

    1. Sounds like a tough patch and I hope you get the med thing sorted out. When it starts affecting running, well then a change needs to be made! Am I right? LOL.

  2. OMG the water selfie footage is priceless. Tom is a very good sport! I also love Coco's little smile. You had a great summer. Who cares how much you ran? You had fun and that's what matters. Thanks for linking!

    1. Tom never fails to surprise me! We had such a good time that weekend--we always do--hoping for a little more of that mom/son shenanigans!

  3. I am normally so sad to see summer end, but as you know I had a crummy summer this year so I am ready to just move on. Our Septembers here are still quite warm so I refuse to get Pumpkin Spice anything until October. I dont know if I really love pumpkin spice ( because there are other fall flavors I like more)or if it's just an obligatory thing to get! Thanks for linking up!-M

    1. I'll be heading to HIlton Head in October and no, I don't want any pumpkin spice!

  4. I am not a pumpkin spice fan either and it seems like it is turning up in more and more products. I even heard that Spam is now coming out with a pumpkin spice product. Ewww!

  5. No cutting here -- those calluses are there for a reason! And no water selfies either. In fact, rarely any fitness related selfies. I'd rather take photos of the scenery.

I am always sad to see Summer go. I'm loving the cooler mornings & the fact that I don't have to rush out the door, but you know what that means . . .

Great minds think alike, obviously. Bandit was my cover photo, too.

    1. So...that's not entirely true. When you're doing strength training (or gymnastics), you can actually rip the calluses so it's best to keep them under control. Mine were really thick.

    2. Yep, agree about needing to treat the calluses. I use a callus shaver - somewhat less likely to draw blood that a straight scalpel although I still occasionally go to deep. Shave then sand/file a bit to smooth off any rough edges that are also more likely to get caught. Rips are no joke!

    3. I've had rips and my son, who was a gymnast in high school concurs-- it's important to keep those calluses under control!

  6. LOL at that pumpkin spice photo :) I actually like pumpkin spice - I know, I'm so basic, haha. I do love Fall running so I'm ready for less humidity and cooler mornings.

  7. I runfess (actually I don't run EVER...so this is just a regular confession) that I always wear weight lifting gloves whenever I workout. Because almost every workout involves dumbells or handling some kind of equipment.
So I do not get calluses, which I then do not have to pick at. Which I would. If I had them. Which I don't. :-)

    1. It's kind of cool having calluses to pick it. What can I say? :p

  8. I thought you need the callouses for lifting? What do I know. Haha. I totally hear you on not caring about low mileage. Isn't it so funny how we think we won't be able to fill the void of running only to find something else equally as satisfying? I wish summer would stay FOREVER... :)

  9. I use chalk when I lift but yeah I get some good callouses. They don't bother me but I lotion up constantly though. One of my coaches recommended taking a pumice stone to them and smooth them out that way. I don't really care for pumpkin spice stuff too much. I'll usually wait until the Christmas drinks come out to indulge!

    1. Mine were really thick and the pumice stone wasn't doing it for me. It's all good.

  10. I runfess that I've sloughed off the rough dead skin on my heels with an official foot pumice thing that I've made the skin split and bleed...why do we hate the parts that we get from doing awesome activities? Probably a good thing I don't have access to a scalpel, LOL.

    1. Seriously! I've been pumicing and scraping and all kind of things. I couldn't get rid of those calluses, but since I had access to sharp tools...

  11. I'm extremely sad to see summer end, probably no surprises with that one. I like pumpkin pie/bars/bread and that's where it ends. It does not need to be "spiced" into anything else.

  12. I've definitely had my fair share of terrible running selfies. I've stopped trying to take them midrun and now just take them at the end. But, I runfess I really like when my friend Jeremy comes running with me because he takes great mid-run pictures AND enjoys doing it. Win-win!

    1. There has not been a lot good about my runs and the selfies are an attempt to salvage something! Sadly, it all went awry this week. Glad I had that flower...

  13. I am also taking advantage of so many other forms of activity that I think I am actually ok with the lower mileage for now. That will need to change soon but I am ok with it for few more weeks. We are moving and we are strong that is what matters!

  14. I gotta say I am so over running in the summer heat and I'm more than ready for the fall. The pumpkin spice thing has gotten so out of control and I swear all things pumpkin spice are showing up in stores earlier this year!

  15. Hey, you've got great balance to be fighting your son with your paddle and without falling off your SUP.

I'm with you, I don't go nuts over pumpkin spice. I do like pumpkin muffins, but don't go out of my way to get them...

    1. The video was sped up--believe me I wasn't moving that fast! LOL

  16. Like you the lack of mileage doesn't bother me and I am only ready for a 5K. Better times will come. Unfortunately for me it's difficult to take advantage with other activities, my forever injured shoulder doesn't cooperate.
... and happy to see the end of summer (even if the temperature is the same).

    1. I hope you get the shoulder thing sorted out! It's tough to be sidelined with something like that!

  17. Oh my, that pumpkin spice meme. I don't like the taste of pumpkin and therefore no pumpskin spice anything. It also came out way too early again this year
Not arguing with the dislike of running, but does anyone ever really have a good selfie face without trying for it. To me that reads as a concentration face, not RBF.
I'm sad for the end of summer's long days, but the heat can GTFO. We had a mild August, but I'm ready for fall. I do not like the extremes of winter or summer
