Life Happens

This week, I finally felt like myself again. Not just physically, but also mentally. I have had a huge to-do list looming over me, and as much as I wanted to avoid it, instead I started to tackle things one item at a time. I took care of some medical issues, both my own and my mom's. My dad is also on that list, but his issues are a lower priority right now. In addition, I need to renew my PALS/CPR before the end of the month, and I started working on that on Saturday. I'm training a nurse practitioner student in clinic. I am doing a presentation at Grand Rounds in March--eeek!-- and started working on that as well.

Selfishly, I have a lot of pre-releases to read this month and in March, and I will read them, but maybe not before the publication date. Life happens, right?

No matter what is on my to-do list, I always put my runs and my workouts first. Because if I can push through a hard run or a workout, I can do anything! You feel me on this?

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: trail run 7.25, 35 pushups
Monday: Yoga with Adriene, auxiliary strength, 37 pushups
Tuesday: Fluid running, 36 pushups
Wednesday: trail run 6~ish miles, 36 pushups
Thursday: unplanned rest day, 36 pushups
Friday: treadmill speed intervals, 5 miles, 36 pushups
Saturday: 36 pushups

Sunday morning was sunny with bright bluebird skies. The temperatures were predicted to hit the upper 20Fs, but when I got to the preserve for my run, it was 8F. Besides the sunshine, there was little to no wind, and I left my thermoball jacket at home, opting instead for some layers I could peel off as I ran. It was a great choice because the black jacket came off after about 1 mile. I was very comfortable!

As soon as I stepped onto the trail, I spied a coyote watching me. I stopped, and he ran off into the woods. He was so beautiful, but after seeing him, I didn't think I'd see any deer. Surprise! Even before I hit that first mile, I saw the big buck in the woods! Then I saw a group of about 6-8 deer on the other side of the trail. I was so excited. I saw deer the entire time I ran. Some were close to the trail, some were in the woods.

My favorite was the sighting of the twin bucks! Don't laugh, but I remember when they were fawns--of course, who knew they were both boys at the time. The following year, I saw them playing together in the woods. They both had little antlers. I've seen them a few times since, but now, they're big boys and so striking! Even after that, I saw more deer. I'm pretty sure the whole herd was out, enjoying the perfect day. What a great run this was!

New month, new Auxiliary Strength track. This time we're lifting heavy dumbbells!

--55# 12 reps
Assault Bike Sprints
-5 rounds x:20 all out/2:40 rest

Wednesday's trail run almost didn't happen. I had to turn the car around twice to go back home--once because I forgot my jacket and again because I forgot my Garmin. DOH! Then, when I got to the trailhead, I saw my watch had only 11% battery. And yes, it did shut off during my run, so my actual miles are a guestimate. Still, I persevered, having the trails to myself and an enjoyable trip around the woods. It was a cool, cloudy 20F but no wind made it tolerable. It was interesting to me that my run on Sunday was in the same conditions, but with the addition of full sun, it felt almost balmy!

Almost as soon as I started my run, I happened upon a group of about 5 does munching on sticks. They weren't as happy to see me as I was to see them, but they didn't travel too far from me. It was pretty quiet out there, with only a few squirrels and birds spotted. Despite my rough start, this was a really nice respite from the busyness that is my life right now!

"Why won't she just go away?!"

This Friday morning treadmill date has become A THING for me, lol. I could have used the blustery dark morning as an excuse, but really, I have been enjoying pushing myself with intervals on the mill. Plus--access to a bathroom is key. This morning, I did 4:1 'pick-up- intervals for an hour. The first 3 minutes were 'recovery' paced, followed by 1 minute of sprinting. As with my other interval runs on the treadmill, the time passed quickly. Here's to hoping that these treadmill runs pay off come spring!

The pushup challenge is pushing along. Pun completely intended. After doing the math, we realized that we would need to do 35.71 pushups per day in February to equal 1000 for the month. Obviously, you can't do 35.71, so further calculations revealed that we will need to do 36 pushups for the first 20 days of the month, then 35 for the final 8 days. Math is hard! So are pushups! I'm on track for a successful finish.

Off the Road...

My impromptu rest day on Thursday happened because I had to accompany my mom (and dad) to a physical therapy evaluation. My mom has taken a few hard falls over the past couple of months. The most recent one wasn't witnessed by anyone, and my mom doesn't remember falling. The only reason we knew was that she had bruising on her face. I shared this with her neurology NP, who recommended physical therapy. My dad has been downplaying this, and that's why I went with. My mom did really well with her evaluation-she's very active- but she didn't do so well with balance. The PT is going to do some work with her on fall prevention strategies, which I hope will be helpful!

This week, I took care of some of my own health issues. I had a follow-up with the periodontist on Monday. Thankfully, the bone graft is healing well! I am so grateful to be able to keep my tooth and not have to opt for an implant, which is what she wanted to do. Fingers crossed the healing continues. On Thursday, I saw a cardiologist to discuss my high cholesterol (thanks, Mom!), my risks, and my options. My rheumatologist wants me to take a statin. My primary doesn't think I need to. After a lengthy discussion, I ultimately decided that I will start rosuvastatin. Hopefully, this will be protective for cardiovascular disease and ultimately, dementia.

Have you seen the latest Instagram AI trend? The prompt is to tell ChatGPT to "create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me" and upload a photo of yourself. Well, ChatGPT doesn't know much about me, so I added a few details to the prompt. I think the result is pretty accurate! I do love that I look so young, lol....

My son, who is still working on the 74th floor of the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago, sent me this gorgeous sunrise photo on Thursday.

Whew! How was your week? How do you tackle an overwhelming to-do list? Do you prioritize your workouts or push them to the side? Did you participate in the IG AI cariacture trend?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. That AI picture very accurately reflects what you do for a living! Mine would be harder to do since my job is hard to describe. I have never actually used AI. I know I am going to start to need to find ways to use it at work but I am kind of a Debbie downer about it.

I really try to prioritize workouts as I feel so much better when I do! I am glad the treadmill workouts are working for you! And how fun to see so many deer on your run!

I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s falls, though. That is scary! I hope the PT helps!

    1. I've been using AI more at my job--we use a program called DAX which listens during a visit and incorporates the information into a note. My issue is that it's great for intermittent visits, but not for my well child visits--I have a very specific template I use for those visits. Still, it's pretty handy and lets me actually have lots of eye contact with my patients.

    2. Yes the note taking capabilities are definitely great. Most of my doctors use an AI ap like that for doctor visits which makes total sense. There is an AI agent in our zoom calls, too, so I know our sales people use it for notes and follow ups.

  2. Yes! Workouts first! Everything will then fall into place.
And well done on the push-ups!! How do you do them? Proper on your feet? Or on your knees? Spread across the day or all 36 in one go?
And I would have turned around too if I had forgotten my Garmin. Too bad about the low battery!

    1. My goal is to do the pushups 'strict'-- that is, with my feel on the floor, chest to the floor only. I haven't been able to do all 36 at once--that is the goal--and so I've been splitting them up. If I'm short on time, I do them with my hands on a box, which the coaches said is legit. I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible!

  3. I feel like years of hard workouts and runs and races have taught me that I am resilient and also disciplined. That knowledge helps me to eat things done.Glad you are feeling better about your health stuff. IMHO PC MD’s are not specialists. I love my PC doctor but I know when to go to a specialist. They cannot know everything about every other speciality.

    1. I agree; my rheumatologist really planted the seeds in my head and talking with you sealed the deal. I'm so glad I went to see him!

  4. I love how no matter what you get our runs and workouts in.

I had to tell chatgpt how to get my work caricature. But I look too young. LOL (I left it that way).

MY MIL is 100 and just sleeps now... pretty scary. I don't know how long she has... she's ready to go.

  5. I like what Catrina said- workouts first, everything else will fall into place. Honestly, except for the few true emergency situations, there's always time to get your run or workout in.
Ouch, pushups. They absolutely kill my wrists. I tried one a few weeks ago and just that one hurt my wrist. It's frustrating because they're such a great strength move. Well, I hope you and your healthy, strong wrists get to 1000! Sounds like you're on track.
Balance!!! So important for older people. I'm glad your mom is going to PT- I hope it helps.

    1. I think I told you about those yoga Jellies that I bought? For when my wrists are unhappy? I haven't had to use them lately, but they are great when I need them!

  6. Oh, you're doing great with the pushups!! And so many deer! What a treat to have that entertainment during your run.
Good news about your mom and PT - that can be so helpful.
Overwhelming to-do lists is my personality, lol. I agree with what others have said, workouts first. They clear your head and help with everything else in life. When I get overwhelmed I sit down with a notes app to list all my have-tos, and prioritise what is most important or urgent and what to focus on.
Nice work in the gym this week! So - 25 kg dumbbell lunges? That's very good! I did half of that this week and felt that was hard! But, I do 40 kg with the bar so I don't know. Perhaps it's my grip strength that needs some work.

    1. No, they were barbell lunges. I feel like I could do heavier, but I sometimes get stuck at the bottom. I'll add more weight next time we do them!

  7. Unless it's impossible, I generally try to get in a run. It just makes me feel better! And it seems like you do it all - and still manage to get in your workouts... you are an inspiration!

  8. It’s overwhelming have a lengthy to-do list, but quite empowering to get the stuff checked-off. I had a bunch of financial planning “stuff” to gather and organize for a meeting last week. Ugh. The ex did all that financial stuff before, so I’m having to figure out what to do with all my “excess” funds on my own (with the guidance of a financial planner)…a good problem, but SO intimidating.

    1. My hubs does all that and I am grateful! I would be lost doing it myself.

  9. Your ChatGPT image turned out really well. I still haven’t taken time to play with it.
God for you for taking care of your own needs as well as your parents. Other than exercising I usually put myself last and end up desperately needing a hair cut and behind on Drs appts!

  10. ChatGTP didn't know anything about my job, so I also had to give some details. Yours turned out really good! Mine was pretty good too. That's a great story about the bucks. You are lucky to see wildlife out in the woods. Was the coyote a rare sight? I've seen one running in our area, but just once when he accidentally started running on my paved path!
Good job on the workouts this week, and I hope the PT visits help your mom!

    1. I occasionally see coyotes, but I learned that this is coyote mating season. That explains all the sightings in my neighborhood!

  11. Well done on the pushups, I don't think I can do them yet/still. I did do some planks on Sunday; I saw my parkrun friend in the gym and she had to do a 30 sec one so I thought I'd try and could, then she announced she had to do two more and I did them fine and she flopped down in the third one so I was quite pleased esp as I'm 20 years older than her! I don't like doing core work either, but planks aren't so undignified as other exercises so I'll carry on with those!

    1. I like planks--they do more than just strengthen our arms! Good for you on the 30 second holds!

  12. Sometimes, I wonder what the deer must think of the runners and hikers that come by lol. You had a great week and you definitely seem back on track. I'm sure that's great for your overall mindest. I think your plan to start meds is sound and wise. Obviously cardiovascular health is nothing to mess with, and I am happy you have a solution that you are comfortable with. I'm so sorry your mom is struggling. It's got to be so stressful. Balance is incredibly important, and I hope she can get some PT to help her with that. I hate core work, but it's so good in the long run.
