5 Songs Guaranteed to Power Up Your Run That You Probably Haven't Heard Before

Happy Friday!! I haven't shared any new music lately and since I'm gearing up for a race next week, I've been freshening up my playlist. Whenever I do these music posts, the number one comment I receive is "I've never heard of any of these songs!" That's my goal. Personally, when I'm running, the last thing I want to listen to is mindless ear candy. Save those songs for the car. My running playlists are always eclectic, with some oldies and classics, some fun pop, and then these outliers that I actually look forward to hearing. Give them a listen, take them for a run, and tell me what you think.

Half Man, Half Machine by Clement Marfo
I first heard this song when my sister and I attended that Mountain Films adventure film festival. I could not find a video of the song, so I'm sharing the short film with you. I love the energy that this song brings and every time I hear it, it makes me think of this guy going over the waterfall on an inflatable lobster! Which of course makes me smile and that always makes a run feel easier.

No Good by Kaleo
"You better start runnin' when you hear the man comin'"

My Shot feat. The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, Nate Ruess
My Shot is from the musical Hamilton. This remix fits my running style better than the original. Either way, you can't go wrong. I love the lyrics.

Champion by Brother Ali
This is an oldie but goodie and I recently discovered it. Now I have 4 songs on my playlist titled Champion! Keeping it positive....

Giver by K.Flay
I just really like this one. "I'm trying to be better..."

What do you think? Are you going to add any of these to your playlist? Do you have any off the beaten track songs for me to check out?

I'm linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday 5!

  1. It's always fun to find new songs to add to your playlist! I really only listen to music when I run on the treadmill, but its always nice to find new songs. It gets boring listening to the same ones over and over!

    1. I agree! With my eclectic musical tastes, I have trouble finding songs that I like. But when I do, I hang onto them for a long time.

  18. What a bunch of fun picks! I really need to start running with music! BTW--unrelated, but I saw your post on Marcia's site last week. We have a pool so we have a 5-foot fence, and watched the coyotes hop it almost daily this past winter! Keep an eye on Cocoa! We have neighbors with fences higher than ours that said they hopped theirs, too!

  20. I find new songs when I'm listening to satellite radio in my car. I take a pic and then add it to my Amazon playlist! These are great -- adding now!!

  21. You're right, I haven't heard of any of these songs!
I'm into older stuff, as the only current music I really listen to is Christian. But, I love older music from previous decades. I would say Rave On by Buddy Holly is a good one, as is Step to the Rhythm by the MMC.

  22. Great list! I don't run with music, because I have headphones on half the time for work so like to run with free ears! But I do like running to punk songs - original ones. Fast and fun!

    1. It's funny--I used to run without music. Then the iPod came along and made it easy to have tunes in my ears! I can run without music but do I want to?

  23. You are right once again! Thanks for sharing more songs I have not heard of!
Lately I have been into listening to podcasts during walks (as I get back to running).

    1. I have not gotten into podcasts yet. I think they require me to focus on the conversation instead of what's going on with my body while I'm running and I can't multi-task like that.

  25. Never heard of these ! Eclectic is a good way to describe your music taste for sure! I did like the first one.

One of my favorites is already quite old but still gets me going - it’s called Release yo delf by Method Man (prodigy mix). Maybe you would actually like this one too.

  26. I'll have to give these a listen, though I haven't listened to music out on a run in many months. :)
