What's new? Let's catch up over coffee! I'm drinking my usual--Folgers--with GLG Collagen and a splash of half and half. Don't judge. I'm heading up to Madison this weekend to watch my Badger play rugby and I hope to come home with some Colectivo.
If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that I have some sad news. I hate to start off our coffee date like this, but it's been weighing heavily on my mind. My parents have listed the Door County lake house for sale. While I understand and support this decision, it's still hard to believe it will be gone. I was 12 years old when they built this house and it holds so many happy memories for all us. While we will still be able to vacation in Door County, it will never be the same for me.
I will miss the sunsets... |
If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that my Fantasy Football team, Run Away, is doing great! In fact, this week, I'm in first place. I've only lost one game so far, although last week was a close one! Having a FF team has certainly made watching football a lot of fun this year. Even though I don't really have a clue about what I'm doing. But does it really matter?
If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that my theory that Google is listening to me played out in a strange way this past weekend. I received a strange text from a person I don't ever talk to and it was a garbled summary of a conversation I had at work. It didn't make sense but it contained elements of things that I said. I found it disturbing. Was it Google? Is my phone spying on me? Is my phone hacked? Nothing has happened since but I'm still a little unnerved by the whole incident.
If we were having coffee... I'd share with you the titles of the books I read this month! Topping that list is a book I won from Bookish: Wild Game by Adrienne Brodeur. Wild Game: My Mother, Her Lover, and Me is the memoir of growing up with a mother who confides her affair to her daughter. It was unputdownable, if that is a word. I also read The Secrets We Kept by Laura Prescott, which is the fictional backstory behind the release of Dr Zhivago. This was the era of the cold war and spying was rampant. Another good read was The Grammarians by Cathleen Schine, a fictional account of a set of twins who have their own language and a love of words. The book follows them through their lives. Speaking of Goodreads, you can find my full reviews there!
What would you tell me over coffee? Have you read any good books lately? Do you follow me on Goodreads? Have you ever thought your phone was spying on you? Ever received a condensed text of your conversation?
I'm linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date and with Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness.
Oh that's sad about the lakehouse! Crazy about your phone! I swear I don't put anything past Google anymore. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad about Door County, I can't even...when my parents sold the house I grew up in, I wasn't at all upset!
DeleteNormally I don't actually talk much on my cell phone (we have a sort of landline still -- although it is an internet phone, actually). Except lately. I definitely think someone/thing is spying on me (and then there's Alexa, of course, but I still love her).
ReplyDeleteMy parents sold off the time share in Hilton Head; we never got there. Then they sold off the one in NYC, which they had planned to leave to us kids. We only got to stay there once -- geez, almost 20 years ago! Because when they had it we were living in TX. And of course there was the whole sale of there house, which was so hard on us because we were the ones who had to clean it out. I miss running in that area when I'm there, but it's the circle of life, right? Hugs.
We don't have an Alexa or equivalent. When they came out, I figured I wouldn't need it. But I also considered the listening feature. Never did I dream that my phone would be doing the same thing!
DeleteIf we were having coffee, I'd ask you to pass me the half and half, because that's where it's at. Wild Game sounds like it's right up my alley, I love listening to memoirs for my commute.
ReplyDeleteRight? I don't get people who drink coffee black. And you'd love Wild Game..OMG. Don't miss it!
DeleteI Am So Thankful That I Still Operate With An Old Dinosaur Phone. Total Bummer On The Childhood Home But They Cant Sell Those Memories. A Better Way To Think About It Might Be With Fingers Crossed That A Family With A Young Child Snuggles In To Perpetuate Memories Of Their Youth. Stay Strong
ReplyDeleteCheers
Comment. Of. The. Day. You are amazing.
DeleteI also got to spend a few days w my college room mate recently. It's so fun to catch up and reminisce about all the crazy things you did in college. I am sorry about the sale of your lake house. It is obvious how special that is to you. Sounds like you have many happy memories there. I always think that my phone is listening to me!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a really interesting summer/fall for me. Lots of memories and lots of reminiscing. I almost feel like I'm grieving growing older!
DeleteI'm absolutely convinced Google is listening. Not a problem until you factor in patient confidentiality. I probably should keep my phone off at work (but then how will I check IG?) ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow do you find the time to read so many books? I'm glad you do though cuz it gives me a list that I can pretty much count on. Thanks!
I can't turn my phone off at work 'cuz I have to be available for questions/calls...
DeleteI don't watch a lot of TV. Instead, I go up to bed early and read! It works out fine because my hubs falls asleep, snoring early too.
Meh, I love my Google overlord :)
ReplyDeleteI'm reading The Undying by Anne Boyer, also The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West by David McCullough and a handful of other books.
I finished Quantum: A Thriller (Captain Chase Book 1) by Patricia Cornwell and absolutely hated it. Hated, hated, hated. I used to love her Kay Scarpetta books but they got dreary and weird and this book is even more dreary and weird and I didn't like any of the characters in the book.
Yeah, I don't read those Patricia Cornwell or Kay Scarpetta books. Actually, I'm not loyal to any author, lol. I like what I like...
DeleteOh, bummer on the house! My in-laws are selling their second home too. That is freaky about your phone. Google knows all, but yesterday when I got to Raleigh my Google Maps app thought I was in Minneapolis— did I take the wrong plane?!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had Google put me in the wrong place yet!
DeleteThat phone thing is weird! I just get weird ads of FB of things I was talking about when not on the phone. I follow you on Goodreads - I need to do better on updating mine and following along!
ReplyDeleteI get those ads too! So creepy!
DeleteSprey to hear about the lake house. I'm sure there were so many great memories there. Yes, I think phones do spy or can hear you. I feel like I will be having a conversation with someone and then I see an add about it next time I scroll thru IG.
ReplyDeleteGlad it's not just me--I was starting to feel paranoid!
DeleteSo sorry to hear about the lake house :( I can't imagine how many great memories you have from there.
ReplyDeleteThat phone thing is super weird! I have noticed that sometimes I will see Facebook ads based on my search history, but never got notifications on my phone.
It's so creepy!!!
DeleteIt's great that you're still in contact with your friend from college ;-) I have reconnected with several via Facebook, and that's been awesome. My BFF from college, though, is still very active in my life as well. She was one of my bridesmaids, and we text almost daily and talk often. College buds are the best!
ReplyDeleteI have good friends from every 'era' of my life. They're all the best!
DeleteColombian coffee here (actually half Folgers because we ran out.) Les and I were teaching at a leadership seminar in the Philippines last week and had coffee from a tree on the property where we were staying. It was delicious!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the lake house. I think my phone is definitely spying on me, but I haven't received any strange text messages. (And now I wait for one to show up...)
Sounds like the Philippines was an amazing adventure!
DeleteSounds like the lake house is full of great memories, sorry about the news :(. I’m convinced my phone is spying on me too.
ReplyDeleteLife is funny, isn't it?
Deleteso I am with you on the phone listening thing, I also have an Alexa so there is that too. My boyfriend and I were brainstorming recipes to make on an upcoming camping trip, sitting in my living room. Next day, trending in my ads, recipe blogs and how to make certain things we were discussing
ReplyDeleteThat is so eerie!
DeleteThat's always hard to do, but it's good that you'll have all the happy memories to look back on!
ReplyDeleteI need to check out The Grammarians--that definitely sounds like an interesting read!
The Grammarians was cute! Not the read I was hoping for, but I still enjoyed it.
DeleteThat's a bummer to hear about the lake house. Hard to let go of a place with so many fond memories.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your FF team! I'm a big football fan so I can imagine it just makes the games even more interesting.
That phone thing is very freaky - yikes!
My FF team is on a roll tonight! Dashaun Watson is bringing me lots of good fortune.
DeleteRecently I had Google home play some Lizzo really loud and after a while I told her to stop playing it but she wouldn't. I guess girlfriend likes her some Lizzo, LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious! But who's Lizzo?! :p
DeleteI read some great books on my recent holiday - 8.5 of them in fact! Next review coming out today and one left to write. The Cornish Cafe trilogy was very fun and well done and inclusive (Phillipa Ashley) and Dispatches from Pluto by Richard Grant excellent.
ReplyDeleteI love your pic of you and your college friend. I'm still in touch with four people I met on my first day of university, although we don't all get to meet up together much. One is my officiating friend, Alison, though, so we do get together.
I hadn't seen Carol for 25 years, although we do stay in touch on FB. Happy to have connected with her in person again!
