It's That Cold Day in Hell...

What a week!

Bitter Cold Temperatures ✅
Gale Force Winds ✅
Taken down by a virus ✅
Hepatitis B is no longer a required vaccine ✅
Retirement is back on the table ✅

Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Trail Sisters hike 5 miles
Monday: Yoga with Adriene, Strength training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: treadmill run 3 miles, trail run 4 miles
Thursday: sick/rest day
Friday: sick/rest day
Saturday: sick/rest day

On Sunday morning, when I woke up, there was about 9 inches of snow on the ground. Our Trail Sisters run wasn't canceled; instead, it was changed to a hike. There were only 3 of us at the trailhead, and we began walking through the deep snow to the trail. It was beautiful. It was still snowing when we first started, but by the time we finished, the sun was beginning to peek out from behind the clouds. Even though our pace was slow, the conversation made the time pass quickly. What an enjoyable morning!

Monday was deadlift day, and you all know how much I love deadlifts! I was determined to put last week behind me, and yes, I did, hitting 195#! I lifted the first rep all the way up, but couldn't get the second rep past my knees. Looking at the video I took, I noticed that I lifted up my hips before pulling the bar up. Rats! Still, I was happy that I at least got the first rep. Progress!

On Wednesday, I had to drive out to my parents' to accompany my dad to his hematologist appointment. Normally, I run the trails on Wednesday, but it would have been too dark to navigate the snow-packed trails safely. So to the treadmill it was. As I ran, I had lots of thoughts, as runners do, and I decided to do a trail run on my way home from the appointment. The trails were runnable, but uneven, and it was hard to get moving in some spots. My treadmill run gave me some decently paced miles, so I feel as if I got the best of both worlds. I liked this and will utilize this plan again!

All week, I felt the start of a cold. When I woke up Thursday morning, I did not feel well at all. My Oura ring tells the story. I've never had such low readiness scores, with Friday lower than Thursday. Good thing Thursday was my day off. The bad thing is I had a lot to do. By the afternoon, I knew I wasn't going to be able to go to work on Friday. I called off work and canceled the cleaning lady. I spent Thursday, Friday, and Saturday on the couch, Cocoa keeping me company.

Off the Road...

I can't remember the last time I was this sick. It's not Covid, and I don't think it's the flu, just one of those myriad other viruses circulating around this time of year. I take pride in my healthy streak! Now I'm back to square one. I did take advantage of my downtime to order my Christmas presents and stocking stuffers. The tree is halfway decorated--even that took every ounce of energy I had.

On Friday, I was following the ACIP meeting regarding the Hepatitis B vaccine and was incredibly disappointed in the committee's decision to change the requirements for the vaccine, requiring it only for infants of women who test positive for Hepatitis B. No matter where you stand on this decision, it wasn't based on science. We're already seeing the impact of this in our practice, with a significant increase in parents refusing Hep B at birth; some are refusing Vitamin K (which babies are born without and is required for blood clotting) and erythromycin eye ointment (to prevent vaginally transmitted infections).

My employer currently has a policy requiring all patients to be vaccinated according to the schedule within 3 visits, or they will be dismissed from the practice. How long this policy will remain in place is anyone's guess. One thing I do know is that I don't want to care for children who are not vaccinated. In the days before we had vaccines that prevent infection from S. pneumoniae and H. Influenzae, I was a nurse in a PICU in Chicago. I cared for many babies affected by these terrible bacteria; some of them did not survive. Now that we have those vaccines, we rarely see serious infections from these bacteria. I don't want to go back to those days. My job is to keep kids healthy!

This is why retirement is now back on the table. I'm not making the decision right now, but I'm not ruling it out if we are required to allow non-vaccinated patients in our practice. People say we don't see any of these diseases anymore, but that is because we live in a vaccinated world. Actions have consequences, and if people stop vaccinating their children, we will start seeing these illnesses return--in fact, we already are. I don't understand why people don't get this. It's not political. It's science.

This isn't how I want to wind up my career. It's that cold day in hell, isn't it?

How was your week? Are you experiencing snow and bitter cold? When was the last time you were taken down by an illness? It's been a difficult week all around for me. Here's to better days ahead.

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. Wow on the snow! I missed DC’s big snow in Florida but see Chicago might have some for me today.

I am so mad about the vaccine nonsense. What is their motivation. And the rising measles cases prove that these diseases will resurge without vaccines.

Hope you are feeling better now.

    1. Today is the best day so far! Going to attempt a hike in the new snow.

  2. Oh no! That virus sounded awful. I imagine the pred you’ve been on is not helping matters either. I am so sorry! And the vaccination thing is terribly disappointing. I can see why you are ready to retire, especially if your practice changes its policy. The change in vaccine recommendations is just so bonkers. I am so livid. I am relieved that vaccination rates are still quite high for my kids school but that likely will change as more opt out of vaccines. Sigh.

Your snowy walk looked gorgeous! We got several small bouts of snow. That meant we could go sledding as an activity for Will’s party yesterday. The temps were mild and the kids had so much fun!

I hope your Oura scores rebound. Mine are low this week, too, so I am glad the week ahead is quieter!!

    1. They were still low this morning, but I am feeling better--in fact, well enough to try some snowshoeing in the 4 inches of new snow we received over night!

  3. Your snow photos look incredible, Wendy! I’m trying to imagine how peaceful that hike must have been with your trail sisters.
Sorry to hear you caught a cold/virus! I also take pride in my “not-being-ill” streak, but sometimes you simply can't help it, especially when you're dealing with people. It’s pretty cool how your Oura ring saw it coming.
It’ll be interesting (and worrying) to see how this no-vaccines trend plays out in some areas. I really feel for the kids - they’re the ones who’ll suffer in the end.

  4. Ugh, sorry for the sickness. I think the last time I was “down” was from the Covid vaccine (or maybe it was the Shingles vax?). I just remember being absolutely miserable for a solid 30ish hours. Not fun! More snow in Iowa, my area was gifted more than forecasted. Lucky us!

  5. So sorry you are not feeling well-it’s the worst! It’s amazing how Oura always picks that up and lets you know it. you all have gotten so much snow for this early! My daughter and her fiancé had so much trouble getting back home. At least you got stuff done! Hope your dad is doing ok xoxo

  6. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that you were sick. It's interesting how our devices (Oura, Fitbit, Garmin, etc.) can alert us of what's going on.

I love all of the snow pictures, but know how what a pain that can be on outdoor workouts. I love your hybrid workout from earlier in the week!

    1. Today I was feeling well enough to get outside with my trail friends; I was antsy, which is always a sign that I'm on the mend!

  8. I'm experiencing cold for the first time. We're spending December in Tennessee and it's a different world! I did get out and run 3 times last week, still learning what layers I need. Once I got past the first 5 minutes, I really enjoyed it!
I had a cold/sinus infection the week of Thanksgiving, thankfully it didn't last long.
Hope this week is better for you, Wendy!

  9. I know conditions are dire if you run on the treadmill! I'm glad you were able to get outside as well.
You probably know what's happening in Florida with the vaccines. Good old Ron DeSantis!
Sorry you were sick. I had a similar situation last summer, where I hadn't been sick in YEARS, and then I got hit with a very nasty virus. Hopefully that will be it for us, and we'll start another long streak of health.

  10. Sorry for the rough week! Hopefully everything gets better soon. I luckily have not been sick too bad recently. But I know it will be coming soon! It always does this time of year.

  11. I never get sick. The last time was when I had Covid two years ago. This year, I caught something after A had the flu. It was a little bit of everything and I still have a little post nasal drop. Infuriating.

I wish I had something positive to say. People are being so stupid, and the ramifications are going to hurt all of us. Especially our children. I'm so angry, but I also can't stop people from self-sabotage. I absolutely understand why you want to retire. This isn't what any medical professional wants.

  12. I've had a pretty good healthy streak going on. Knock on wood! I think Covid was the last thing that got me, other than just a cold after traveling. I usually get a sinus issue after decorating for Christmas (all of the dust floating around!) but thankfully I didn't get it this year. I'm with you - team science! That is a frustrating situation happening with the non-vaccinated clients. I would hate to see you end your career on a low note, but you will know when it's the right decision for you.

    1. I'm just so disappointed in this decision; I'm also disappointed that people are using this as an excuse not to vaccinate their kids. This will not turn out well. I don't want to be a part of it.
