Still She Persevered

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I had DOMS all week. From Sunday's run to Monday's strength training class and forward into the week, I struggled with soreness, tight muscles, and limited mobility. It's not as if I was doing anything more extreme than usual. But the DOMS, once they hit, wouldn't let go. I'm pretty sure our wacky weather added a whole extra element to the pain. Yet I persevered...

Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Ice Age Trail run 4 miles
Monday: Yoga with Adriene, Strength training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 6.7 miles
Thursday: Yoga with Adriene, Strength training
Friday: run 6 miles

On Sunday, I decided to tackle the connecting road from Lodi to the Fern Glen segment, one step closer to completing the Lodi Valley Glacial Drifters program. I ran 2.8 miles from the end of the City of Lodi segment through an industrial park and along a busy county road before I got to the Fern Glen trailhead. I hated every minute of it. Was it the wind? No. It was the pavement. While I was running, I couldn't help but wonder how I used to do this all the time when I was training for my full and half marathons. Trail running has sure changed me! I can't imagine chasing those distances on the road ever again.

I didn't run through Fern Glen; instead, I chose to walk, so I could soak up all the beauty before I had to retrace my steps back to my car on the road. But wait! A couple, who were doing some trail maintenance, struck up a conversation with me, and when I told them what I was doing, OFFERED TO DRIVE ME BACK TO MY CAR!!! I was happy to accept, feeling only a quick twinge of guilt for not running more miles. But not having to run that CR back? True trail angels. I almost did a happy dance, but I didn't want them to take back their offer, lol.

Mondays are for snatches, and prior to going to class, I did a Yoga with Adriene class for mobility. I needed those shoulders loose! We did a snatch E3MOM x 8 rounds of 1 snatch + 2 overhead squats x 5 rounds, building to 57.5# (oof!), then 3 heavy (85#) snatch pulls for the last 3 rounds. BTW, that 57.5 OHS was a new PR for me!

We finished with an E3MOM of 100m run sprints. I forgot my watch, but we all ran fast, and I finished 2d each time!

I woke up on Wednesday morning feeling very unmotivated. Not only was it supposed to rain, but I had some significant DOMS from Monday's strength workout. I had hoped that Tuesday's Fluid Running sesh would have helped shake them out, but alas...no. It took a lot of mental gymnastics, but I finally got myself out the door by 8 am. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the trailhead, it had started to rain. It wasn't heavy, and I figured the canopy of trees overhead would block most of the raindrops. I was right. The sound of the rain overhead was very soothing as I made my way around the preserve. After a few miles, the rain became heavier, and I began to get wet, not only from the rain but also from the puddles of water in the single tracks. By the time I made it back to my car, I was soaked and covered with mud. No complaints, though, as this run felt really good!

Still feeling some DOMS, I did some yoga before heading to the gym on Thursday. There was an E3MOM x 8 rounds (2:30) on the board. The first 5 rounds were Clean + Front Squat + Jerk. I built to 75#. While I did get the bar above my head on that last round, it was a struggle! I also hit my chin with the bar on the way up while attempting the jerk. Rattled my teeth! Glad I didn't chip them.

The last 3 rounds were heavy clean pulls, 3 per round (115#). Our accessory work was 4 rounds of 100m Farmers Carry (45#) and 6 tire flips.

The DOMS continued into Friday--did I overdo it this week? I was determined to get out for my Friday run. It was a beautiful morning--perfect for a run--and there was no way I was going to call it a rest day. The first mile was a little rough as I shook out my legs. After that, I had a couple of good miles despite my hamstrings talking to me. The last 3 miles gave me trouble. I had to stop and walk a few times to catch my breath. I wasn't about to call it quits and walk home--I had a time constraint as I needed to get home to get ready for work. So I pushed through it! I am proud to say that I finished only 4 minutes past my goal time. I got in the shower, ate breakfast, and made it to work with 5 minutes to spare.

Off the road...

It's Father's Day today, and we're celebrating at home with my father-in-law and his lady friend. My youngest is camping up in the Minnesota Boundary Waters, and my oldest is with his wife at an event with her family. It should be an uneventful, peaceful day. Just what I need...

And just because I know you all are waiting for an update (lol), my father has decided he doesn't like the changes I made to his phone, and...he wants to reduce my mom's caregivers even more. This made my decision to spend Father's Day with my hubs and his dad a no-brainer. I have started working with a therapist who specializes in senior care, including working with caregivers of seniors. Hoping I will find some clarity!

How was your week? Did you experience wacky weather swings? Are you celebrating Father's Day?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. Ugh, I'm sorry to hear about the continued issues with your dad. Hoping the therapist helps and can provide some new perspective or suggestions.
We had some warm and then cooler weather this week. While i love the heat, the cool weather was perfect for running!

  2. DOMS can be crazy! Doing yoga before that strength session was a great idea.
LOL on not being able to run on concrete anymore. You are spoiled now!
So, do you just hose off your shoes after a muddy run?

Sorry your Dad continues to cause issues. Looking for a therapist sounds like a good idea. You sure are trying all the tools. Hopefully there will be a combination that works.

  3. Ugh. Your dad! I’m so sorry! I am glad you are working with a great therapist, though. This is such a difficult situation. I hope you have a wonderful time with your husband and FIL!

Nice work on your workouts! You had a strong week despite the DOMS! Trail running is way more appealing than road running. If I had easy access to trails, I’d do more trail running but I’d have to drive quite a bit to get to trails.

  4. I'm sorry to hear your dad continues to be such a challenge. Not fun at all. I hope the therapist is helpful.
A low-key Father's Day sounds good. We'll visit Greg's dad but that's about it. They move into the Senior Living Center this week. I know my MIL is going to flip out.

  5. It is hard to battle with the parents when they are stubborn about their care. We are in the same boat but I think they are caving in. Some weeks I am more sore than others for no real reason. Enjoy your day with your husband’s family

  6. Oh, DOMS. The thing that baffles me is that I'll have terrible DOMS, then it'll go away while I'm running, but as soon as the run is over it's back. What is going on??? Is my brain just not registering that pain during my run? Anyway- hope you're feeling better by now. Your trail runs look amazing, as usual. I especially like the one of you running in the rain.
Happy Father's Day! Sorry your own dad is being... difficult. Good call to spend the day withe your FIL. You definitely need a peaceful day!
