It's Summer!

It sure felt like summer this week, with the heat, humidity, and storms! Still, I was able to get all my runs in. This time of year sure humbles me when I lace up my running shoes. All the strong running of the spring--POOF!-- is gone. I keep telling myself that these summer miles bring strong runs in the fall. Stay tuned for that!

Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Trail Sisters run 4 miles
Monday: Yoga with Adriene, strength training
Wednesday: trail run 7.2 miles
Thursday: strength training
Friday: run 4 miles
Saturday: rest day
I went to both Trail Sisters runs this weekend--one on Saturday and one on Sunday at a different preserve. Ilisa, our leader, decided to add a Saturday run to accommodate the runners who can't run on Sundays. But oddly enough, it's still the same people coming out no matter what day it is. Ilisa has added me to be a co-leader, and in August, she and I will be attending a Trail Sisters Leadership Summit in Colorado. I'm honored and excited to be included. Hopefully, we will get some ideas about attracting more members to our runs.

There were only 3 of us at the trailhead on Sunday morning. It was fairly humid, but not nearly as bad as Saturday. Still, we did 4:1 run/walk intervals. It worked fine for the first 3 miles, but by mile 4, the conditions had taken a toll, and we walked the final mile back to the parking lot.  Acclimation is a process!

On Monday morning, I woke up to a thunderstorm and a really achy body. I wasn't sure I would be able to do the snatches that were on the whiteboard for our strength workout. But after some yoga at home and the really great warm up at the gym, I was pretty loose. We did an E2MOM x 10 rounds of snatches, building to heavy. I struggled with the first couple of lifts, but as my body recognized what I was trying to make it do, and some encouragement from SJ, I was able to build to 55#! It wasn't perfect, but it was my heaviest snatch to date.

We finished up with some spicy accessory work:
4 rounds/15 minutes:
-8/leg weighted) single leg step up (16" box) with leg drive
-seated banded rows to failure
-10 box jumps (16")
-10 chest throws (10#MB) to the wall

It's been a really steamy week! Hoping to get a decent run in before it warmed up, on Wednesday morning, I had my feet on the trail by 6:30 am. It was actually really pleasant for most of my run. As soon as I started running, I came upon a mama deer and her 2 yearlings enjoying a morning dip in one of the ponds off the trail. As soon as they saw me, they ran out of the water, but not before I could get a photo.

I saw quite a few deer on my run and heard lots of birds overhead.  I also saw this angry looking crawfish, which reared up on its hind claws when I approached. I see them every summer! There were a lot of downed trees blocking the trail--I needed to use this tree to take a detour across the creek after I came upon a large fallen tree blocking the trail and much of the surrounding area.

Thursday's strength workout had us doing heavy cleans. After an extensive warm-up, we did an E2MOM of 10 rounds, building to failure. Once again, I failed at 95#. I just couldn't get under that bar! The camera tells the story, lol. More of the same to come...

Our accessory work was 4 rounds of:
-8-12 pendalay rows (55#)
-:20 battle ropes
-:40 hurdle medley course

After another night of terrible storms, Friday morning was calm and clear. The DOMS were strong, and I was feeling fatigued, so I cut my morning mileage to 4 miles. Even at a slower pace, I struggled with this run and was happy to be done.

Off the road...

On Thursday, I drove out to my parents' house to fill my mom's pill boxes--believe it or not, no one else will do it-- and to help my dad with his iPhone. My dad has really been struggling with his phone. Among other things, he accidentally calls us multiple times per day. He blames his phone, but he has essential tremor and hits the wrong icons all the time. He didn't want a simpler phone--he likes watching videos on YouTube and taking pictures with his camera, so I did a deep dive and discovered that the iPhone has an option called Adaptive Assistance. It's an interface designed to lighten cognitive load for children, seniors, and anyone else who needs it. And guys, it is amazing! I set it up with my dad, selecting his most used apps, and let him pick the layout. The icons are big and colorful, and for the most part, using the apps once they are open is intuitive. As of this writing, I have not heard from him, so I assume all is going well.

However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Last week, my dad and sister pressured me into reducing my mom's caregiver hours to 4-6 hours per day, a decision I do not agree with.

Cocoa goes to doggy day care once a month while I have my house cleaned. For Pride Month, they have been having special events on Fridays. This week was a rainbow charcuterie board of vegetables and fruits. Cocoa really hates going there, but I'm pretty sure she enjoyed this!!!

On Saturday, we were up at the lake. No waterskiing due to windy conditions. But it was otherwise beautiful! The hubs and I went strawberry picking and came home with over 17 pounds of strawberries. They are so tasty! He will freeze most of them, and we'll eat them all winter long.

How was your week? We had some wild weather and lots of severe storms, including tornadoes, around the area. Anyone else? Is the heat and humidity slowing you down? Have you ever gone strawberry picking?  What's your favorite way to eat strawberries?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. It’s funny how different our strawberry seasons are. I highly suggest using a few cups for jam. ;-)

Where do you encounter crawfish??? In stream beds?

Nice find on the iPhone features. Hopefully your Dad enjoys it more too now that he can do what he wants more easily.

    1. These are prairie crawfish and I see them in the woods on the trails! Aren't they weird?

  2. Now I want to go strawberry picking! Those look so delicious. I've only been strawberry picking once, and it was a lot of fun. We tend to save our fruit picking for apple picking season in the fall. I've never seen a crawfish! How cool!

    1. My hubs is going to make jam, and tonight I'm making Strawberry Spoon Cake for dessert. It's cold out, so it's a perfect time to have it.

  3. Oh the humidity! I haven't dealt with it on a regular basis since we lived in Hawaii. Tennessee weather is very humbling. Poor Les got caught in a downpour Tuesday evening while riding his bike.
New favorite way to eat strawberries ~ fresh from a vending machine! We saw these in both Belgium and the Netherlands and they were quite the treat mid-ride.

    1. What a great idea to have fresh fruit vending machines instead of processed foods! Europe is just so much more evolved.

  4. It was a steam bath here this week too! So many bad storms! Summer weather has rolled in ugh not a fan. I did not know about that iPhone setting and that might be good for my dad too. He needs seriously help with his phone. I keep telling our kids not to let me get behind in technology!

    1. My dad kept accidentally dialing me--one time I picked up and heard him yelling at my mom. It was bad. He didn't even know I was on the line! I'd be happy to avoid that situation in the future.

  5. Yes, my sister said there were tornadoes. One touched down in Indiana, right near where my son's fiancee and her family live. Everyone is okay though!
Good to know that about the Iphones. As I always like to say, for every problem, there's a solution. And if we're struggling with something, other people probably are as well. There's probably an app for it!
Well, you had Florida weather this week. Fun, isn't it? But we have to keep getting out there. There's no such thing as a bad trail run.
To answer your question, I have been strawberry picking. Our season is March, and unfortunately the strawberries don't taste that great. I'm sure yours are amazing. I've been blueberry picking in IL and they were delicious.

    1. I hate to say this but yes, I've had a few bad trail runs. Usually involving BITING FLIES. I need not say more. Let's call it speed work, shall we?

  6. It's just miserable out. I hate it.

Ooh, I like what you found for your dad's phone. I might have to look into that for my mom.

I'm sorry they pressured you down on the care. Hopefully it works out ok for everyone.

And sweet Cocoa! I'll tell you that Luna would HATE that treat. She like blueberries and strawberries well enough but everything else is suspect. She always acts like we are actively poisoning her (she has never been poisoned) and it's so ridiculous.

    1. Cocoa loves most fruits and veggies. I have to smash the strawberries for her to eat them. She does not love cherries, though!

  7. Oh, the value of having blogger friends! Thank you for that info on Apple's Adaptive Assistance. That's what I will do for my dad. He has an Android, and I just checked, they also have an "Easy Mode" for seniors. As soon as I get back to Zurich, I'm going to set it up. His text messages are full of typos, and I'm thinking he really struggles to see the small icons and fonts (he would never admit it). Also, I need to simplify his screen.

That heavy 100lb clean will come! Just stay at it, Wendy! (Not that I can lift that heavy! 😂)

    1. I cannot tell you how happy I was to discover that Adaptive Assistance for the iPhone. I wonder why they don't make it more well known? Let me know how your dad likes it on his phone!

  8. I'm starting to get the impression that it;s been really muggy and humid for you guys lately! ugh! that would also make me cut a run short or adapt to a walk instead of a run!

remember when you think you've failed you have actually still succeeded not only because you gave it your all but you also inspire others :)

I have most definitely been strawberry picking! I even once went on a road trip to Strawberry Point, Iowa to pick strawberries and get a photo of the "largest strawberry in the world".

  9. Well done with those snatches! That must have been a great feeling to crush it like that after you thought you wouldn't be able to in the morning!
Interesting about the Adaptive Assistance, I hadn't heard about that. What does it do, focus on a few apps and hide the rest? I hope it will work for your dad. When you read my post, you'll understand I've spent a few days on tech support for my aged parents...I'm exhausted and there's still more to be done but there isn't time for all of it this time.
I LOVE strawberries! I eat them as-is as snacks, with cottage cheese, with pancakes, or with icecream, yoghurt or similar. Sweden has some excellent strawberry varieties and when I was 14 or so I had a summer job where I helped pick strawberries and help at a farm where they grew strawberries. It was a very strange place!

    1. You can show as many or as few apps as you want. My dad and I went through all of his and he picked the ones he uses the most. If he needs something that we didn't pick, then we'll have to exit adaptive assistance. So far, so good.

  10. That is a bummer that your sister is siding with your dad. I hope there aren’t bad consequences from the reduced hours. How stressful.

We had super hot, humid weather and then the day we left for my parents, the temps crashed and it was cold and windy. We still had a nice visit but the boys were barely in the lake since it was so unpleasant much of the time! It did calm down one night so we were able to go on a pontoon ride. I hope the weather is nicer when we are up for the 4th!

  11. Your strawberries remind me that I need to grab some of the mulberries form the numerous trees along the trail.I never think to do that during the week, and I ave no excuse as I’m either walking, biking, or running on the trail daily. We had the same extreme weather…lots of heavy rain, and I heard there was a derecho north of us.

    1. What do you do with the mulberries? I don't know that i've ever had them. We had a gooseberry bush in our yard growing up. My grandmother would make jelly with them.

  12. Angry crawfish, but he actually looks pretty funny! That's so great you found a way to help out your dad with his phone. I'll have to check into that. My mom gets around hers pretty well, but she is very limited in what she uses. Maybe there is something that can help her out! Her sister has an Android phone and I am completely baffled by it. I wanted to help her out and show her where the voicemails were.. and I couldn't figure it out. There's no way a 90 year old was going to figure that out! I wish her son would get her an iPhone instead so my Mom can communicate with her better.

  13. How fun that you'll be going to Colorado to the Trail Sisters Leadership summit in August!

It was hot and humid here last week and over the weekend, but today is delightful and tomorrow is supposed to be even better! Hopefully, you're getting a break in the weather, too.

We used to go wild strawberry picking when I was little. They're much smaller, but way sweeter than the garden variety. I've tried growing them here at our home, but can't keep the squirrels out of them and they love taking a bite out of each one right as it gets ripe. :-(
