Shake it Off

If only I could do a better job of shaking things off!

I've always been a ruminator and I have trouble letting go of my worries. If you read my runfessions from Friday, you know that I received a yellow light from my ortho: proceed with caution because you might feel pain but it's ok and it will probably fix your problem... and yeah, if you find that confusing, so do I!

Even with this unusual advice to get out and test the limits of the tendon, I didn't immediately get behind the boat nor did I run to the gym and do cleans and jerks. The steroid injection itself caused me some pain. Dare I say that my wrist is feeling better since the injection? I haven't tested it out yet. We'll see how the upcoming week goes.

Running

On Monday, I took my shoes to the preserve where the elk live. I didn't see the elk, but I had a very nicely paced run around the 7.25 mile loop. It was cloudy and breezy, and the trees did a good job blocking the wind. I had the place mostly to myself and I enjoyed this run immensely.

The iconic bridge well known to Chicago area runners

After I found my favorite shorts, I decided to wear them for Wednesday's trail run. I didn't have a plan for this run, and I found myself on the little deer path around the lake. The first mile was tough--I tripped over a tree root and hit the ground, hard. After I dusted myself off and got back up, I circled back to my car for some water and to regroup. I shook off the nerves from the fall and took the rest of my run slowly--the tree root game was real! My rewards for this run were finding the flamingo again, spotting lots of wildlife, and finishing in the gentle rain. A few people told me it was National Pink Flamingo Day, so I'm glad I didn't quit on this run!

Hello little friend

I had the day off work on Friday. Naturally, it was pouring rain when I woke up. The rain continued to fall throughout the morning. At about 9:30, the radar showed a break in the rain so I optimistically laced up my shoes and headed to the bike path. About 2 miles in, the skies opened up and I was pelted with rain. But on the way back, the rain stopped, however, the air was thick with humidity. Ugh. My heart rate shot up and I had to take quite a few walk breaks. I haven't run in that kind of humidity since last summer and yeah, I was really glad to be done with this run.

I was up and out the door early Sunday morning. Thank goodness I had a short little run planned because it was very tropical and not in a good way. I struggled with the humidity. I don't get people who like to run in this stuff. I'm just not that person. Anyways, with my wrist feeling better, I was so tempted to play in handstand! But I played it safe and kicked up into forearm stand. I was surprised at how strong I felt and this made me very very happy.

Strength

Another week without CrossFit and why not, I've been neglecting my PT exercises too. Sammy Jo had another creative plan for me but even so, we still had to adjust the workout to accommodate my gimpy arm.  She substituted good mornings for deadlifts--that's 65#, y'all--and my wrist cooperated! I alternated with those Copenhagen planks that I did a couple of weeks ago. She had me do a tibialis strengthening exercise--good for the ankles and agility. Then I alternated banded lat pulldowns with Russian twists on the bosu. Balance and core are not my favorites which means more of that will be coming in the future!

Off the road...

Since I had Friday off, my oldest son and I made plans to spend Friday together. Originally, we were going to bike ride along the Chicago lakefront, but with my wrist injury, biking wasn't an option. The weather was still iffy, so we decided to have lunch and check out some of the taprooms in his very fun neighborhood. We went to 3 different tap rooms and tried all kinds of very good beer. The first stop was the Revolution Brewpub, which is one of our favorites, where we also had a very good lunch. We also checked out Solemn Oath Brewery Still Life, which is new to the neighborhood, and Life on Marz Community Club, also new this year. Both these taprooms have breweries located in other parts of the Chicago area. Besides the delicious brews we had, Marz also had a Juniper CBD-infused seltzer (non-alcoholic) that I just loved! I brought home some beer for my hubs and some of the seltzer for me. Tom and I had so much fun! It was great to have time to just while away the afternoon over a couple of beers and catch up on life. It felt so good to be out and about doing normal things!!

How was your week? Are you in the heat wave or the monsoon? Would you rather run in the pouring rain or 99% humidity? Did you get all your miles in? What was something fun you did this week?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I think I'd prefer the treadmill to either of those options! Ugh on the wrist. At least the ortho thinks you can keep doing things. I have been ruminating over non-fitness things that have gotten under my skin, and need to shake them off and let them go! I love seeing where you'll find the flamingo.

    1. It just shows you how much I hate the treadmill! I love to run, just to run. The treadmill makes it feel like a chore.

  2. also team way too tropical. Give me the rain, at least it's somewhat refreshing. And Kudos on the awesome forearm stand
So glad you had a fun day with your son -- the juniper seltzer sounds amazing.

  3. Glad for the "yellow light from your ortho", it means that the things go better.
Please send me a bit of your rain, I love to run under the rain even if people look at me like a crazy person!
Here we have the so called "African" heat with a lot of humidity so I MUST run in early morning.
The pic where you run on the bridge is very beautiful and you look fast with both the feet off the ground.

  4. I don't care for pouring rain or humidity so I guess I'm a diva. :P The taproom excursion sounds fun. Always nice to have quality time with the kids, right?

  5. Getting together with my friend is always fun. We were going to go to the farmer's market -- well she did, but I was tired & it was hot -- luckily our backyard is very shady & it was breezy so we were comfy.

I do not like running in humidity, either!

Sounds like a fun time with your kiddo. :)

    1. Just not a fan of humidity at all. Except for what it does to plump up my skin, lol

  6. Heat wave here, but it's a dry heat... As a native Californian, I hate that phrase!

My trail run was the funnest part of my week - I saw a bunch of cattle going up and 2 little ones crossed the trail right in front of me on my way down. There's a cattle ranch 3.5 miles from the trailhead, before the trail continues on. None of them seemed to care I was there, they just stared and continued with breakfast.

Your advice from the ortho is so confusing!

    1. I agree! I guess I get to just do what I want, consequences be damned!

I love all the fun stuff on the trails. How cute that must have been!

  7. I'll run in the pouring rain any day! Here in Florida it's either 99% humidity or pouring rain in the summer- I'll take the cooler option. Of course all my runs are in the pool currently so (looking on the bright side) I don't have to worry about the heat.
Sounds like you had a great week and got some good strength training in. Tibialis strengthening sounds intriguing! Hope your wrist holds up... or the tendon ruptures... or whatever!

  8. What a lovely afternoon with your son! We are still in the monsoon here, we even had a massive thunderstorm the other night. I've been dealing with some awful news about a friend and thanking my lucky stars for my caring, brilliant running friends who are helping me process things. Glad the wrist is improving and that you're feeling more comfortable: I would be being just as careful!

    1. Thank you, I'm getting there. A friend from a group I'm in passed away in horrific circumstances. A lot to process and grieve.

  9. I think running in the rain feels good, but when it stops it can really feel rough! Not only are you soaked but then you're hot again and the air is super muggy. That was kind of what was happening on my long run yesterday, but its was more of a drizzle than a downpour. I hope your wrist continues to feel better, even as you start using it a little more!

    1. I felt the same way on Friday. My splits are hilarious--they go from 9s in the rain to 10-11s in the humidity. Dramatic!

  10. Hmm...that advice is definitely a little confusing to me too! I hope that your wrist continues to heal and feel better.

So nice that you were able to spend some time with your son this week! That CBD-infused seltzer sounds really interesting too.

  11. I am always cautious when coming back from an injury too. Can't hurt to baby your wrist a little bit longer. you look so happy w your son. Very sweet photo. It's nice when our adult kids want to hang w us. Definitely rainy run over 98% humidity for me! But, since you asked, I would like to order up some lower humidity temps for next week. :)

  12. I'd take the rain over the humidity any day! The weather this week is going to get really ugly on the humidity front - don't know how much running there will be :(

Sounds like such a fun day with your son! And I'm intrigued about that CBD infused seltzer.

  15. The old Deb would have definitely picked the heavy rain over the humidity, but the current and wimpier Deb isn't so sure. LOL

I'm glad your hand/wrist is feeling better and hope it does well as you reintroduce activities to it. Those Copenhagen planks are no joke!

  16. Oh those stubborn tree roots! The good thing about trail running is that you don't have to contend with traffic but on the flipside, you have to be careful of roots and other tripping hazards! I think anytime we have to run in severe weather, rain, snow, humidity, etc., it just makes for a more memorable run, right? ...lol

  17. Now you have me singing that song.

Glad to see your wrist is feeling better and kudos on that hand stand. You amaze me.

I am starting to run a little on the trail (you are inspiring) but am still very careful when I see roots.

  18. Sorry to hear about the fall but glad you were not hurt. The humidity was just awful. And it is still on this week. The AC broke again so I am struggling here. What a fun time you had with your son! I don't mind running in the rain but only if it is hot so the rain will cool me down. No bueno if it is cold.

  19. I'm sorry you're still nervous about your wrist. And that you fell. And that you didn't see any elk! They must be amazing in person!

I hope you continue to heal, but I'm so glad you got to spend that time with your son, and that your headstand made you feel so strong.

  20. The day with your son sounds wonderful! That humidity after a rain is just yucky IMO. Not a fan of that happening. Great headstand!
