Runfessions for August

Once again it's time for runfessions, that monthly chance to 'fess up, to do your 'splainin...Marcia at Marcia's Healthy Slice hosts this link up where bloggers bare all. It feels good. And there's no penance. Try it, you'll like it!

Anyways, on with the runfessions!

******************************************************
This isn't too far from my skill level.
This mama can't dance. Or carioca. Becky has me warm up before CrossFit with a variety of exercises, including hamstring kicks, skips, side steps, and yes, carioca. Which I cannot do. She has shown me a few times and I just can't get it. I was talking about this to my youngest son, who apparently can carioca, since that move is used at football practice. He looked at me incredulously. "You can't do that?" he said. And I lost a lot of points on the cool mom scale. That was until I made those amazing peanut butter protein cookies last week. Those cookies put me back on the charts.

***************************************************************
Speaking of being a bad mom, I just got back from a mission to Target. School started this week, and I don't know how it is at the high schools your kids go to, but it isn't until the first or second day of school that the teachers at ours give a list of things they want the kids to purchase. So off I went to pick up binders and folders. I was stunned to find all the shelves bare. No folders. No binders except for these crazy Yoobi ones. I didn't think the boys would like them, and clearly no one else did because that is all that were left. Anyways, I found a few binders that will have to do. At least they were better than the Justin Bieber folders I bought last year. Hey, it's the price you pay for making mom pick out your school supplies, right? School supply shopping was fun when the boys were little, but you know what? I'm over it.

****************************************************************
I needed this guy.
Last week, I almost killed my blog. Seriously. I thought my blog was a goner after trying to add a "print" button to my HTML code. I put a recipe in a post, and wanted my readers to be able to print it easily. I've added code before without a problems, so I added the code for the print button, but the blog went crazy. It looked like a web page from the 1980s. I actually started to sweat. I tried not to panic. I tried not to cry. I sent a message to the Blogger help forum (and I've never heard back from them). I had no idea I was so attached to my blog. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't go to bed, leaving my blog looking so ghetto. So I went back to square one, reformatting the whole thing. I started from scratch with the layout. As I played with the layout, I was happy to see that all my posts were saved. All my badges were there. I continued to dig, and I found my Chicago Marathon background. I fixed my blog. All by myself. It looks a little different, but it was time for a cleanup anyways. Holy you know what! I'll probably continue to tweak things but for now, I'm breathing a sigh of relief that everything is still there. But it will be a while before I insert any code into the HTML.

*******************************************************

Last year, I wrote a post about running etiquette, which included sharing the running path. Last week, while I was doing speed work, there was an asshole walker who felt the need to "toe the line". Mr. Path Hog walked right down the center of the path on the dividing line and would not move. On my first pass, I was forced into oncoming bike traffic in order to avoid him. On my second pass, I pulled out my secret passive aggressive weapon. Since I run with my hands open, it isn't hard to access the business fingers. Which I did. I don't know if he noticed but it made me feel better. After I passed him, I realized that he was the same dude who did this to me last year. Guess he feels like he owns the path. You know, taxpayer and all. Don't even get me started on Speed Racer. Old dude rides his bike like the path is his own personal Bikebahn? Cyclebahn? Or according to Google translate, Fahrrad Autobahn. The posted speed limit is 8 mph, but you can tell he's riding his own Tour de Lake Arlington. All while chewing gum. Cooler than cool. No helmet, of course. For sure his hard head would protect his pea sized brain. But I bet he wears a cup. Safety first! And he hugs the middle line too. Can't we all just get along?

******************************************************

I'm going to finally confess admit that yes, I have an injury. Denial is a powerful force. I've been ignoring it, and now it's speaking quite loudly to me. My old friend, plantar fasciitis, is back. When the heel pain first started, a few weeks ago, I pulled out my PF sleeve, and began doing all the work to try to keep it at bay. But after Saturday's long run, I can no longer keep it a secret. As I like to joke, all the cool kids have PF these days. But it's no joke. It hurts. The funny thing is, once I get running and it gets warmed up, it doesn't bother me. Which apparently is a good thing. I'm going to continue to do what I've been doing, and hope that I can get through the next 6 weeks of marathon training. If you have any magical powers, please direct them to my left heel.

Got any runfessions to share? How was back to school shopping for you? Any problems sharing the running path?

  1. UGH I hope your PF gets better right quick. Don't ignore it too much--I had a friend who did that and she had to walk half her marathon. We are pretty good about sharing the path downtown, but it is the tourists that don't Like, MOVE OVER.
And this is the reason that I don't mess with coding.

    1. I am for sure not ignoring the PF. I've been tending to it, and yesterday I had no pain--WIN! But today, it's a little tender.

      Damn tourists...

  2. We didn't get a high school supply list either so Thing 1 just bought whatever a few weeks ago when I got Thing 2's stuff. Tarjay was well picked over then! But yes, plenty of Yoobi crap. It's pricey. A ghetto blog sounds kind of cool.....
    Thanks for always linking up!

    1. Yeah, I should just bite the bullet and buy a few things in mid-August like a good mom would.

  3. Oh, POOH on the PF rearing its ugly head! My PF is all but non-existent these days....just some funky "numbness" or "tingliness" at the base of my two middle toes (also my left foot). It kind of feels like the muscles fell asleep and are just waking up...know what I mean? I'm being cautious with it, though, because I have a handful of 13.1's on my calendar and I want to do well with my finish times. I'll try to send you some magic (I just realized I never sent you that "magic" pen from the ultra)

  4. Boo to PF-mine's been bugging me for a year now.... I typically don't feel it during the day, but mornings when I get up are another story! One thing I do is massage it using a small bouncy ball, (Tennis ball is too soft, a golf ball is too hard!) It's not as bad as it was, so something must be working. Good luck with yours.
And path hogs are the worst! Hmph!!

    1. I have a Nubz ball, which I've been rolling on like crazy. And I ice after I run, heat in the morning. Yesterday I woke up pain free! Today, not so much...

  5. Good Luck with the PF. I am in the same boat and still working hard to move past it. It seems I stretch more than train these days. "Don't Stop Believin" Enjoy the rest.

    1. This is my 2d go round with PF--I'm hoping it doesn't last as long as last time ( 6 months!). I hope yours goes away soon too!

  6. Your memes are on point today! I was laughing the whole time. Except for the blog glitches...I've been there before and it made my stomach turn. Glad you got everything all fixed up!

  8. Oh no! Glad you got the blog back! I am terrible with "fixing" things-- totally clueless!

  9. I knew you were dealing with the PF, but sorry to hear it's worsening. I hear from a lot of people it doesn't actually bother them while running. Geez, why won't our bodies cooperate with us?

No idea what carioca is & of course I could just google it but not gonna.

As Darlene and I were running across the very narrow little footbridge at the park last night and the couple walking in front of us were totally ignoring the sound of our footfalls coming up behind them I yelled pretty loudly "on your left", which I think surprised Darlene but did the trick.

    1. On your left works well when you're coming up behind someone, but what if they're coming right at you? Maybe a punch to the abdomen?

  10. Sorry you are having trouble with PF. It is easy to deny injuries and I have been so sore since returning from an overseas vacation. Tomorrow is a long run of 10 miles and I hope my body is up to it!

    1. I've got 7 miles to do tomorrow. I'm hoping the PF quiets down!

  11. I've always hated back to school shopping!!! And some of the things on the teacher's lists are so specific and hard to find. I would love if the teacher would just ask for $200 per kids and bulk order everything they need. Hope your PF gets better and you have a good run this weekend. Tentative plan is to do the sole sister virtual run at 7 am on Sunday pacific time.... Will send you a pic!

    1. Sometimes I think the teachers are a little too greedy with their request list, at least in grade school. All those dry erase markers?

Yay for the Sole Sister run! I'm doing mine tomorrow. I've got a bike ride on the plan for Sunday.

  13. Sorry to hear about your blog troubles! I'd have been freaking out too if I thought I deleted my blog. Glad you were able to fix it. Hope your plantar fasciitis gets better! Good to hear it doesn't bother you while running!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh no that stinks about the PF! I guess the one good thing is it doesn't bother you when you run (trying to find the silver lining!) Hope it heals quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh no, sorry about your injury! The sharing the run path situation would drive me crazy. But not quite as crazy as my biggest pet peeve: when there is a huge race and people walking with strollers decide to seed themselves in front with the elite athletes. I am a slow runner, I know my place is NOT next to the guy who is hoping to take home the win.

  16. I've never been able to carioca either!! It makes me feel so much better that I'm not alone! Sorry about your PF. I just reviewed the GoMoji foot massager and really liked it - I think it's specifically for PF so you could try that out. Worth a try, right? Happy weekend!

    1. I've been eying the Go Moji foot thing! Glad to hear you like it. And glad to have a sister who can't carioca too!

  17. What is carioca? I must be losing cool points as we speak, LOL. Your blog looks great, I am so happy you were able to recover everything! My runfession is that I just started back running in the last couple weeks. Gotta start somewhere!

    1. Click on the word in the paragraph for a link to a video that demonstrates it. It's an agility move for athletes. Clearly, I"m not very agile! Glad you're back on the road again!

  18. Cyclists and walkers who can't share the path annoy me so much as well! My running trail is used by a bunch of Microsoft and Nintendo employees for their commute, and half of them don't ring their bells or give any notice that they're passing me. I run as far as possible on the right side and still get plowed down a couple times a week, even though I run without my headphones or music. I hope your PF gets better!

    1. I had a few cyclist pass me closely last weekend on my long run, without notice. What if I stepped in front of them? I got pretty upset a few times.

  19. Wait wait wait does "business fingers" means you flipped off the walker!? Lol!

  20. Sorry about your PF issues. I had some issues earlier in the summer. They have been pretty tame lately. You know what to do and crossing fingers all goes well throughout your training! Glad you didn't kill your blog. I had a scare like recently! And LOL and losing points on the cool mom scale! Hilarious!

    1. Oh that near death experience with the blog was really upsetting to me! I'm not at all techy, so I was pretty scared!

  22. The blog thing is something. I don't like to mess with it. I changed my coding to replace the default blogger comments with Intense Debate and Comment Luv. Which works great. Except from a mobile phone. My questions to both Blogger and Intense debate have vanished into the ether. It frustrates me but I don't have the energy or time to try to sort it out further.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I keep the blogger comments. I've been meaning to ask why you've changed it?

      Delete
    2. I like the Intense Debate Interface - you can easily see recent posts from other bloggers and you can also reply to comments and moderate comments via email and it posts to your blog. I do wonder if it is worth the frustrations from the mobile side, although I cringe at the thought of changing the code back!

  23. Oh my - I got shivers thinking about your blog going haywire!! That is scary. So glad it all worked out - now I'm not sure if I should be afraid of coding? Hummm...
We don't start school till the 8th and my preschooler mid Sept. Have done a little school shopping, but need to get backpacks for the big kids.
Why can't people share the road? It's really very simple...
I am so sorry about your PF!! Take care of yourself and don't run if you feel pain. Sending healing vibes!

  24. Oh no!! So sorry to hear that the PF is rearing it's ugly head!! Runfession: every now and then I'm convinced that I have it but I never say it outloud. Every so often I'll step out of bed and my heel will hurt for a second as I walk to the bathroom and then nothing ever comes of it and I won't feel it again for months....hmmmm..And what the hell is carioca??

    ReplyDelete

    1. Carioca is an agility move that a lot of athletes use for a warm up. I linked to a video above, if you hover over the word carioca. But Wendy and agility don't always go together...

  30. No! No! No!! I hope that your PF stays at bay and gets better soon. Listen to it if it speaks! I know that you do. :) Your Path Hog story cracked me up. We once had some woman yell at us when we were running, "Share the road!" as she went by taking up 2/3 of the path. We were all scrunched over on one side. We still laugh about it!!

  33. Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about the PF! I am always so nervous about the same injuries coming back because its like once you hurt something, its so much more likely to get hurt again.
I am so impressed by your HTML skills. I trie changing the format of my blog on my own once and totally screwed it up. I had to call my friend who is a computer whiz with that stuff and he logged in and fixed it for me i like 2 minutes.

Now that we are empty nesters occasionally I miss certain things with the kids, back to school shopping is not one of them!! It is a worse mess than the after Thanksgiving 75% off table! Good luck with the PF- you are tough! Funny post as usual, love your runfessions!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't know who is ready to buy school supplies before school starts! We resorted to Staples or Office Depot but things could get pricey there. I get so mad at path-hoggers when I'm on my bike. Why do runners and walkers think it's ok to stay THREE across on a busy path?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Same here with the high school supplies, but since my sons have both graduated from college that's only a distant memory! AND, not one that I miss!

Sending positive vibes your foot's way!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just need to stay on top of the PF, stretching and all that. Otherwise I won't be able to run...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh no, sorry to hear about the PF. My IT band is better but sometimes here and there I experience a discomfort. Ha, I didn't even know what carioca was till I clicked on the link and saw the video. I am almost 99% positive I cannot do it either. Glad you are back on the cool mom charts. :-)

Have you tried switching your blog over to WordPress?
