It Was One of Those Weeks...

This was not my week. Taking a cue from Holly, I've come up with a few alternative titles for this post:

"Now I know why penguins walk the way they do"
"Ice, ice baby"
"I need a backup plan for the backup plan"
"Come on, Man!"
"The Mondayest Wednesday Ever"

The week started off with so much promise. I worked Monday morning and went for a very rare for me afternoon run in the 50 degree weather. The bike path was mostly clear, save for some puddles. My legs felt really light following that massage I had over the weekend. There was a strong west wind, so I went out into the wind which meant I had a tailwind that pushed me home. This was a strong run for me. I felt really encouraged and was so looking forward to running again on Wednesday.

When I went out to run Wednesday morning, I didn't expect the ground to be coated with ice. I mean, come on, it was 37 degrees! Apparently, it wasn't warm enough to melt that ice and after slipping in my driveway, I penguin-walked myself back inside. I changed into shorts and fired up the treadmill. Well, I TRIED to fire up the treadmill, but it wouldn't start without me tripping the circuit breaker. After it quit running twice, it refused to start at all. I knew this day was coming, but I didn't want it to be that day!

Frustrated, I pondered my options. I considered riding my bike, which was still in the trainer but I'd had my heart set on running and I just wasn't feeling the bike. I had planned on yoga after the run, so I rolled out my mat and did Five Parks Yoga's Deep Release for the Lower Body.

While I did yoga, I noticed that my nose was a little stuffy. By the end of the day, I had a full-blown head cold. I didn't sleep well that night and when I woke up, I felt pretty awful. I canceled my strength session with Sammy Jo. I also skipped boot camp. Worst of all, I had to cancel my lunch with Marcia.

I needed to work on Friday and I turned to my old friend, Sudafed. I joke that Sudafed gives me wings. Did you know Sudafed is a banned performance enhancing substance? As if that was going to stop me. Glad to be breathing freely, I decided to join Steph for Friday afternoon bootcamp. It was a fun class with an "Animal Farm" themed workout (bear crawls, alligator walks, duck walks, and frog hop burpees alternating with planks, hollow holds, wall sits, and supermans. After that, we did a Tabata workout of the assault bike, dumbbell snatches, box jumps/step-ups, atomic sit-ups, and overhead squats. There's nothing like Tabata to get your heart pumping. I think my resting heart rate was a little higher from the Sudafed, so I took it lighter on the dumbbell snatches and used a PVC pipe for my overhead squats. Bootcamp was just what I needed after such a challenging week!

My week ended on a high note with a late afternoon 6 mile run on Saturday in the sunshine. It was cold but there was no wind and I completely enjoyed this run. Due to schedule changes at work, I've been running more in the afternoon and I really like it! Who am I?

  1. Definitely sounds like one of those weeks! Hope you are feeling better. The bike path can be tricky w the ice as well. I got home just in time for some frozen rain tonight.

    1. We don't usually get ice or freezing rain, but we've had our share this year. What a winter!

  2. Sounds like we had similar weeks! I'm glad you finished on a high note! Hope you're feeling better.

  3. I don't think it's been above freezing here since those two days last weekend...we have thick ice everywhere and oodles of sloppy slush. As much as I loathe my time with Milly, she better not bite the dust just yet...

  4. I had a week myself! I hope this week is better, but I am already dreading going back to the dentist .... Are you going to replace your treadmill?

    1. My new TM is coming on Saturday. I got another ProForm--same price I paid for this the old one 22 years ago!

  5. Poor TM, she served you well. Our sat was cold and just INSANELY windy. We had plans to go to a run/talk event and one by one we all ditched it. Today was still cold, but far less windy.

Here's hoping you're able to keep running outside -- I truly don't know what I'd do without my treadmill. I don't really run on it that much, but it does make a difference.

I am sooooooo looking forward to not being cold on my runs. It may swing a little too far the other way, and I'm sure I'll complain but still . . . oh, did I mention we live behind a car dealer and some car starting beeping at about 10 pm and didn't stop until 2 AM?????? on Friday night. The police were dispatched but they couldn't find the damn key.

    1. Oh, so annoying! I thought those car alarms shut off after a while.

  6. One of my sisters lives outside Chicago and had the exact same experience with the warm temps but black ice mid-Week. How frustrating, but glad you stayed safe! Sorry to hear about your treadmill. Good luck on the replacement search!

  7. Oh boy, we have had our mill for about 10 years and I am praying it makes it a few more. My hubby took everything apart and cleaned and oiled everything last year so hoping that keeps her happy. There is SO much going around andrew's school right now that I am praying we stay well. A kid at the tournament yesterday puked all over the place during one of his matches and of course he had been sitting right next to my kiddo all day. BLeh!!!!

    1. Ewwwww! I'd much rather have a cold than any kind of GI bug. I've been sick a few times this winter, which is really unusual for me. I just think it's a bad season.

  8. What a frustrating week! I am sooooo glad we have had very little snow or ice this winter - a real change from last year. Great tops you're wearing, by the way!

  9. Sudafed is my go-to when I'm feeling stuffy. Good luck on the treadmill search. There are some beauties out there! Tuesday is always my toughest day of the week. I only work 3 days, so it's the mid point of my week.

    1. That's pretty sweet! I work 4 days per week, but 3 would be even better.

  10. I had a similar 'off' week so I can totally relate to this post@ I'm glad that at least the week ended on a high note for you though.

That's interesting about Sudafed - I never knew it was a banned drug. When I'm feeling stuffy I usually take NyQuil or Theraflu. Both have seemed to work well for me over the years.

I was sorry to hear about your treadmill, but I guess on the plus side, now you get to shop for a new one :)

    1. One of the reasons I like Sudafed is that it gives me energy, which is probably why it's a banned substance! It's been a long time since I've needed to take it. I hope both of us have a better week this week!

  11. That was definitely a "C'mon man!" week! Glad to hear it ended on a high note. I can not tolerate Sudafed. I feel all jittery from my high heart rate. I'd rather ride it out.

    1. I'm lucky that I don't get bad side effects from Sudafed. I was pretty miserable so it was nice to be able to take something to relieve my symptoms.

  12. Oye, what a string of rotten luck. I had no idea about Sudafed! Glad the week ended well. I also had an afternoon run this week and enjoyed it - I even thought I might make it a regular thing if it means sleeping in a bit! Hope this week is less Monday for you

  13. Weeks like that are the worst. I'm glad it ended on a high note! Have you found a new treadmill?

I love that you're loving the afternoon run! I need to figure out how to do that. I'm pretty sure I could get more miles in that way.

Sudafed makes my heart rate go up too. No bueno since I have high blood pressure. I have to take HBP meds. I'm a mess. LOL

  17. Icy weather, cold weather AND being sick? Yeesh sorry about that. You did pretty good considering all that!! Here is to hoping you have a better week this week.

  18. Yikes, what a Wednesday! It sounds like you are getting over that cold at least - glad the Sudafed was magic.

  19. Oh no, your treadmill!!! I don't know what I would do without mine. It sounds like a pretty crapy week, I hope you start feeling better and things start looking up for you.

Also Sudafed gives me wings, I had no idea it was banned!

  21. I'm sorry you got a cold but happy that Sudafed did the trick to at least keep you moving. The weather is so crazy this year I can't keep up! I sounds like a new treadmill may be on your wish list!

  22. Oh man! Ice and a broken treadmill and then getting sick? Rough!!

I've been enjoying more late morning or afternoon runs also this winter... it's nice to get out in the sunniest part of the day!

  23. Oh man - what a week! At least it ended on a high note with a good run on Saturday. I'm dreading that this week will be a rough week with the freezing rain coming tomorrow and then a refreeze later in the week. I remember now why February is my least favorite month weather-wise!

  24. Glad you had some good runs to start and end the week but the middle of the week sounds tough. Glad the sudafed helped a bit at least.

  25. Considering I'm having trouble remaining upright in the best of conditions I wouldn't even attempt to run if there was a slightest hit of ice.
Glad your week ended on a high note!

    1. All that core work I do at CF pays off when I hit an icy patch! The goal is to stay upright.

  26. OMG Wendy, what a rollercoaster of a week. I think I would have thrown in the towel for sure after slipping outside. There's nothing that peeves me more about winter than falling on ice/snow. What a bummer about the treadmill dying. I guess you also must have felt pretty bad to miss CF and lunch with Marcia! At least the way the week ended was better!! I really can't complain about the weather here, but the truth of the matter is I likely will at some point (hate really cold rain!!!)

as I've come in late on the weekly wrap I'm likely to not get tons of comments on my post, but I'll definitely hit up Michelle and others I regularly comment on!

  27. So glad you're feeling better. We've all been taking extra care with bleach and washing our hands, since little man was diagnosed with the flu. He's much better, thank goodness 9in fact, had he not briefly had a fever, we probably owuldn't have known he was sick at all).

If the weather was better, I would probably enjoy afternoon runs, but as it is, our afternoons are generally pretty uncomfortable for running unless you absolutely have to do it, so we stick to mornings. Or, at least, I do.

  31. Gah! What a week! Though it does help to end on a high point with a good run and some decent temps, right? I hope next week starts off on a high and stays there for you. It's sunny here today (still cold) and it's amazing what a little sun can do. I've been feeling down in all of this winter doldrum... There is hope! Warmth and sun will come! And shorts, too ;)
