After a short jaunt to the north woods last weekend, it was back to work with Becky and back to work for reals. Another trip to the ER with Matthew, this time for anaphylaxis. Scared and shaken, but he's ok.
All of which threatened to shake my resolve to stay positive. And that's all I'm going to say about that. Instead, I'm going to focus on our fun, active getaway.

And just keep on running...
The title of this post is a lyric from a Jimmy Buffett song, The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful.
Last Sunday, my son, his girlfriend, and I took a spontaneous trip up to visit my parents in my favorite place in the whole world, Door County Wisconsin. My son's girlfriend had never been to Wisconsin, save for Wisconsin Dells, which to me doesn't really count, and he was excited to show her his favorite place to vacation. My husband and oldest son had to stay home to work. Someone's got to pay the bills, right?
The farther north we drove, the more the stress melted away. Funny how that happens!

No sooner did we get there did we pull out the kayaks and head to the bluffs to explore some of the caves.
My foot felt pretty good, so I road tested it to my favorite wooded refuge. Almost 5 miles and I made it up the steep hill without stopping.
Matthew was excited to SUP, since his leg was not quite healed enough to do this when we were here last month. For her first time on the stand-up paddleboard, his girlfriend did really well! She just loved it. Who wouldn't?
How about this road?
How about this sundae? What runner could pass up an ice cream dish with the name "Dusty Road"? We celebrated Matthew's birthday at Wilson's with 3 spoons. All this activity made us hungry!
On our last day, I took another run. I stopped by the water to contemplate life. Wouldn't it be nice to have this view every day?

Looking at my pictures makes me happy. I'm hoping to get back here one more time in August. As Jimmy Buffett sings, "The skies are too clear, life is easy today."
How was your week? How do you like to unwind? Active vacation? Complete rest?
Keep the summer fun going! Don't forget about Friday's fun link up: the Running Treasure Hunt. Find 5 funny, odd, or just plain interesting things you've seen on the run. Post them on FB, IG, or your blog and link up with us! Should be fun!
Today I'm linking up with Tricia and Holly for their Weekly Wrap! I'm also linking up with Ilka and Angela for the Sunday Fitness and Food link up as well.
These pictures make me happy too! I am glad you had a relaxing vacation. We are heading to the beach in about a week and I am very excited to try to just CHILL and RELAX. That is hard for me to do.
ReplyDeleteI have no trouble chilling and relaxing in the right setting. Immediately.
DeleteLove your pics. Fun is important. My week was not so fun but I guess they all can't be. It's raining today and I bailed on a 5k. It hate when I do that. Hopefully next week will be better.
ReplyDeleteI feel you. I had a terrible run this morning. I don't know what has happened to me lately. Very frustrated.
DeleteGlad you had a good getaway! I am back to work tomorrow after my vacation and I am already feeling the stress creeping back in.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your son - he looks so happy!
ReplyDeleteI am all for an active vacation, as long as I can sneak in a nap or two, LOL. Wisconsin looks really beautiful; I think I've mostly seen snow pictures, so this was a nice change. Glad you had a good vacation.
Wisconsin really is a beautiful place and it can get quite warm in the summer! The warm season is so short up north that we really make the most of it while we can.
DeleteYou have nooooo idea how much I need a vacation. And right now, I swear I'd love to just veg out. But that's not completely true. I'd still run. And do yoga.
ReplyDeleteHow scary about the ER visit -- I can't even imagine. :( Glad he's okay.
I've been taking quite a few mini-vacations this summer, which has been great. But man, as soon as I walk in the door of the clinic, all that stress-free, easy feeling vaporizes. Funny how that happens.
DeleteLove your pictures! It would be nice to be on vacation everyday with no stress or worries! I am super impressed you did a headstand on the paddle board. I think I would fall off a hundred times trying that! That winding road looked really cool! Glad you had fun!
ReplyDeleteThe headstand was much easier than I thought it would be! Actually, I struggled more with Warrior 2. I think it was because with headstand, my hands and head are all in the same place, like an anchor. It was fun!
DeleteAaahhhh! It's been too long since I've been in DC. It is gorgeous up there! Love all your pics and that you got the chance to relax and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHoping to go back one more time in August!
DeleteThat is the coolest looking road and gorgeous sunset. Looks like you are certainly making the best of summertime!!! Nice paddle board headstand! I'd be happy just to stand upright on one.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a couple years since I SUP'd but once I got my sea legs, I was fine!
DeleteI'm glad Matthew is OK. You know I love all your water activities and pictures. Nothing better. I'm very impressed by the SUP headstand! Ahh...Jimmy Buffet. Such a wise man! I'm struggling with the "reals" right now. My "mind is on a permanent vacation" (another lyric of JB). Thanks for linking, Wendy.
ReplyDeleteThere were people wakeboarding and I wanted to bribe them to take me skiing!
DeleteAh, your vacation looks perfect! Love all the time with your son and playing outside! I still need to try SUP. Maybe if I figure out a vacation ....
ReplyDeleteYou'd love SUP! It's really fun!
DeleteLooks beautiful, but I love that windy road picture most of all! I never thought of Wisconsin as a destination, but I love off-the-beaten-path places so will need to check it out sometime! Glad you enjoyed it while getting some good runs in!
ReplyDeleteIf you lived in Illinois, you would think of Wisconsin often! LOL! I think it all depends on where you live. I spend a lot of time north of the border!
DeleteI always love all the pictures you take. I also love all the yoga poses you do, especially the head stand. It looks like you had a fun vacation with your son and his girl friend. I am glad to hear that your foot is on the mend
ReplyDeleteIt has to be on the mend! It's been over 9 months. I'm really happy that it is calming down. Of course it helps that I'm not running much these days.
DeleteI can't believe you can do a headstand on a SUP board! Super impressive
ReplyDeleteIt's not as hard as it looks! Seriously.
DeleteI'm glad you got to get away for a few days and have some fun! Your getaway was a lot more fun than mine was ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis was all about fun! Yours was a labor of love...
DeleteLove your photos. I look through my vacation photos often. Always brings back great memories.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to have all these beautiful pictures! It was so much fun.
DeleteLove jimmy Buffett, love that song and absolutely love this post! It makes me want to go back to Lake Winni in New Hampshire where we lived for the month of July last summer. Seeing the lake, running in the mountain and kayaking and swimming every single day was just so good for the soul!!!
ReplyDeleteYou hit the nail on the head! Even with Matthew's ER visit this weekend, I'm still feeling good vibes from our trip.
DeleteI often think about the line: the work of childhood is play. Because here the work of adulthood is play as well. I need to try stand up paddle yoga. I don't rock the standup paddle yet but I have no fear of falling in the water :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't fear falling in the clear waters of Green Bay. Our retention pond aka goose poop pond here in my hometown is a different story.
DeleteActive vacation, for sure. Then i get to eat more :D
ReplyDeleteWell, yes!
DeleteGorgeous pictures! I recently read a book that took place in Door Country, so this California girl feels like she's in the know. Sounds like a great and relaxing weekend.
ReplyDeleteWas it worth the read?
DeleteHappy to hear your foot is doing well and I am so envious of you all balancing on those boards...I just know I'd fall over! Happy birthday to your son, that sundae looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteSUP isn't as hard as it seems!
DeleteWhat a gorgeous place! I'm so glad your son is finally better- what a summer he's had!
ReplyDeleteAnd that headstand???? GOOOOOOO!!!!!
The fun isn't over yet...!
DeleteThese pics look so beautiful... I've paddle boarded a few times, and done SUP yoga one time.... I really want to try to make the time to do SUP yoga again... it was so hard but I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do more SUP--summer is just too short here.
DeleteHappy birthday to your son! Sounds like a great trip! Good to hear your foot is feeling better. So cool you could do a headstand on a SUP board and what a fun windy road! Always love your pics!
ReplyDeleteIt's just such a fun place!
DeleteThat looks like an amazing Trip and like really tasty ice cream!! I'm glad your son is feeling better! he looks really happy on the picture with his girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteWe ate our way through Door County! Good thing we were so active!
DeleteCocoa has grown so much!!
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy how fast that happened!
DeleteSounds like a great trip! I'm so impressed you were able to do a headstand on a paddle board! I hope Matthew is doing ok! YIKES!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't as hard as it looks!
DeletePoor guy. He found out today that he needs surgery on the leg. So you can only imagine his state of mind...
Well that looked like a fun trip, dude! Harry and I really need to hoof it up to Wisconsin for more than just races and beer.:P I LOVE ALL OF YOUR PHOTOS! You always look SO BOLD!
ReplyDeleteYep, be brave! And there was some beer consumed as well...
DeleteSo glad to hear that you had a great trip up north. Cocoa looks quite happy and relaxed too. And my has she gotten big!
ReplyDeleteShe grew really fast, didn't she? She needs some obedience training, tho...
DeleteI can't get over that road! what the heck! I get sick just looking at it. Looks like an awesome and relaxing time away and yay for a great 5 mile run!
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking about what the road builders must have been thinking when they built it!
DeleteMy husband isn't an athlete but he likes to be on the go when we vacation! But he won't try SUP. Maybe you and I can try it in Florida!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like so much fun and very relaxing!
ReplyDeleteWe had a good time!
DeleteLove this! I have never been to Wisconsin, but now I want to!
ReplyDeleteI am glad your son is ok - I'm sure that was a scary moment.
And I am so glad that you are running and feeling great. I am sure that you needed this big time!
I prefer more active vacations: I love trying new things and exploring new places. Mr PugRunner is all about complete rest, so we try to compromise and work both into our travel plans when we can.
Ideally, I love to summer in Wisconsin and winter in Florida!
DeleteBeautiful!!!!! I love it! Such great pics and it looks like you had a relaxing time. I hope your son is feeling much better and is on the mend! I hope that relaxed feeling carries over!
ReplyDeleteIf only...
DeleteI can't believe you say Wisconsin Dells doesn't count! I love that place lol...very cool poses.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that nobody but you knew what I meant! LOL! Of course it counts, if you head off the strip and check out the beautiful area surrounding the Dells. Devil's Lake State Park? Gorgeous.
DeleteBeautiful pictures and it looks like you are making the most of Summer!! How is your son...a trip to the ER for anaphylaxis has got to be incredibly nerve wracking!! I do love all of your Jimmy Buffet references... they make me want to kick back and relax more :-) Thanks so much for sharing you post, have a beautiful week!!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a pretty stressful summer--we found out yesterday that he has to have surgery on that leg. I'm a little stressed...I need more vacation...
Deletethis looks SO amazing! what a treat for you to be able to getaway to a place like this. Glad you're foot is better and able to run again.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to get back there one more time this summer...we'll see!
DeleteSo happy to hear that Matthew is OK after the ER big scare. I'm sure this trip rattled your nerves quite a bit. These vacation pics are simply gorgeous. I love the headstand on the kayak! So awesome! Good to hear your foot is feeling better even on a steep hill! Have a great week Wendy!
ReplyDeleteLife has been throwing a few lemons at me this summer! Enough already, right? Trying to make lemonade...
DeleteHa my Boss use to have a notepad with that Jimmy Buffet saying about wishing you were beautiful on it! I loved that notepad!
ReplyDeleteI too just loved the pictures of yall kayaking! Made me jealous cause we hauled our kayaks 675 miles to Myrtle beach and never once got in them! We really did not have much time and I was a little intimidated by the size of the wave out there! No lie! They are a lot different from our Gulf Coast waves let me tell ya! Seeing he pictures of Matthew and his leg healing made me smile too!
Ocean kayaking would be a whole other thing! When we were kayaking in the waters of Green Bay, once we paddled out of the security of the harbor, the waves got pretty big. We turned around and headed back to calmer waters.
DeleteIt would be nice if we could always be on vacation!! Love your pics! What's with the windy road? lol. That's a cool pic though!
ReplyDeleteI always wonder the same thing--what were the road builders thinking? Makes for a good picture, tho!
DeleteDoor county!! I used to go up there often when I lived in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago! Looks like a great trip and very relaxing! Beautiful pics :)
ReplyDeleteIt's as beautiful as it has always been!
