Runfessions: April

It's time once again for Runfessions! I love this time of the month because I pretty much get to unload and clear my conscience so that I can start the next month fresh. I shared a couple of runfessions in my race recap earlier this week, but no worries...there's never a shortage of things to runfess over here at TTLWH.

I runfess I've been cleaning up my Facebook feed/unfollowing pages like it's my job. It was mind-boggling just how many pages I was following. I'm not doing this because of the security breach. Don't worry--if you're reading this, I didn't unfollow you. I'm unfollowing pages that I don't interact with and vice versa. There was so much clutter in my feed. I want to see my friends and the people I "know".

I runfess I tried to promote my self-defense post on IG and was rejected because of "profanity". What the #&*%? I scrutinized my post and apparently the hashtag I used to link to Girls Fight Back, #badassballet, raised the red flag. Hey, it's their hashtag!!

I have a black toenail. I discovered it a few weeks after I ran the Sarasota half marathon and my pedicure started to grow out. But that's not my runfession. I'm not sharing pictures of my black toenail because I runfess that I don't want to see pictures of that stuff. We are runners. We fall, we get scraped up, we get blisters, we get black toenails. Feel free to share your story and all the details, but otherwise, it's just TMI.

You know how much I love, love, love my INKnBURN and I love representing them. But... I runfess that I'm glad my ambassadorship is ending soon. As part of my ambassadorship, I am a member of a Facebook group where people post pictures of themselves wearing INB. The company chooses pictures for a weekly montage, as well as for the emails they send out. The number of photos being posted is out of control. Seriously, people are posting 20+ photos in the thread. Some of the photos are really obnoxious. Last week one person posted about 10 different pictures of herself in the same outfit from different angles.

I runfess that at last weekend's race, if I thought any women ahead of me were my age, I tried to pass them. You know I'm competitive. It's always fun to AG place in a race, and I was running really well, but the race I just ran attracts the fastest runners in the area. The woman who won my age group ran a 7:15m/m pace. At AGE 55. FOR 10 MILES. I doubt I'll ever AG in this race but it sure was fun to try!

What do you have to runfess? Are you scaling back on Facebook? Have you ever tried to promote a post and have it rejected? Black toenails--do you want to see them? Do you try to guess other runners' ages? And pass the ones you think are in your age group?

I'm linking up with Marcia's Healthy Slice for Runfessions and Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday 5. Have a great weekend and don't forget to share your weekly recap with Holly and me on Sunday for the Weekly Wrap!

  1. So I tried to promote a veggie ball post on Facebook and I got restricted for the use of the word “balls”

  2. I unfollowed alot of stuff on Facebook a few weeks ago and it felt good. I don't really use Facebook much other than for the groups. (I feel like I see everything I want to see on Instagram!) I also have a black toenail- I had no idea anything had happened until my pedicure grew out. I got a fresh coat on but it doesn't completely cover it. Usually I can feel it when I have a black toenail, so this one really caught me by surprise!

    1. I felt the black toenail coming after Sarasota. I hoped it wouldn't happen but yep, there it is! I think it was from pounding down those Florida bridges. I'm going for a pedicure this weekend--I've got a foot post on Tuesday and I need some pretty feet--so we'll see what it looks like without the polish.

  3. I'm sure I've said badass on IG many times. I'd think meshing it with ballet would make it even less offensive. Crazy! What if we were tagging a pic of a donkey?? :p Sorry to hear about the INB gig. Yikes!

    1. The INB ambassador group has turned into a bunch of drama. Like everything that is good, people will ruin it. Just watch.

  4. Thankfully, I've had only a few black toe nails in my illustrious running career. I get a lot of "white" toe nails, though...I think it's from getting blisters under the nail, eventually causing the nail to separate from the nail bed. Definitely not as ugly as the black ones, but a nuisance none the less. I need to go through my FB (and Insta) feed and do the unfollow thing...too much garbage that I don't want to see/read.

    1. I haven't had many black toenails either but I sure don't want to see them in my feed!

  5. It is interesting how IG decides which posts to allow bc I have seen some nearly naked pics for gym gear or supplements and they seem to have no prob w those. I am starting to have some of the same probs in one of my ambassador groups. Not sure what to do about it!

    1. Those naked and abdomen shots are also on my unfollow list. I get that people are proud of their bodies, but I just don't want to see that. A little subtlety goes a long way.

  6. I definitely reviewed my friend list after the breach. I can narrow the list of friends who likely shared me with Cambridge Analytica but I am not holding that against them. I have sworn off those surveys myself. The photos I'm over - and was never into - are the one's where women pull the fronts of their shorts done. I am NOT the target audience for that.

    1. The other thing on FB that people don't realize is stealing info are those surveys, you know, who were you in a past life, that kind of stuff. I started getting the worst spam mail after doing one of those and I swore never again. Even tho they can be pretty funny sometimes.

  7. Well, since I'm not going to win an AG award unless no one in my AG shows up . . . however, I do well following a rabbit -- no matter what their age!

I runfess that I kind of think runfies themselves everywhere are out of control. Which is why I don't post many. I think occasionally they might inspire someone, but I also think that continuous stream of them isn't.

    1. I think it's all about what you post. I don't mind runfies as long as they are inspirational.

  8. I hardly use FB but I did scale back to only following my blogging and running friends (ie. People I had something in common with) sadly a lot of old high school friends had to go.

So I have a question on the black toe nail thing. Is it possible that the toe nail is black because there is actually a blood blister underneath the nail? This has happened to me twice now.

    ReplyDelete

    1. If you get a blood blister under the nail, it's going to be painful and needs to be "drilled". I see those sometimes in the office. But from running, it's usually trauma to the nailbed, like when your toe repeatedly hits the front of your shoe (like what probably happened to me running on those Florida bridges).

  9. I should scale back on Facebook. So much junk, so many pages, so many groups. But that would take the time I need to clean up my email list, work on my blog ads, cull out old posts, or the zillions of things I need to do (but don’t). #timechallenged

I think running racers should wear their age on the back of their calf just like triathletes do. Then you know if it’s worth it to pass them. But of course, then they’d know they need to pass you back!

    1. I like your idea! Then I could reserve my effort for my real competition!!!

  10. I am back off my ambassadorships except for skirtsports because I can't and don't want to keep up with all those postings.

Of course, I try to beat someone in my age group. However, sometimes I think they are and they are either younger or older. And yes, some of the older ladies even in their 60s are FAST!!

Nope, keep your toe nail pic to yourself LOL I always wear polish so I will see this weekend when I change it if I have any.

    1. Heck yeah those old ladies can run! I want to be one of them when I grow up!

  11. I recently also cleaned out my f/b friends, "unfriending" folks who never interacted. That was quite a lot. I also "Hide everything from...." any post of a meme, even if it supports my values.
I don't my reading politics posts from my friends, if they write it themselves, but am SO sick of scrolling through all those memes, political, "feel good," or otherwise. I wish more people would just take the time to write their own thoughts and not keep forwarding that crap.

I look forward to your Runfessions every last Friday!

    1. I have to admit that some of the Trump memes are pretty funny tho... but I did unfriend a high school classmate over his anti-Obama racist posts a few years back. It was upsetting to see that he thought it was ok to post stuff like that in a public forum.

  12. I was just thinking I needed to maybe clean out my instagram feed a bit. Like you said, mostly for people who I don't actually interact with. And I agree about the feet photos... I don't need to see that.

    1. I also check new followers and if they're sketchy, I block them.

  13. I love that you try to pass others in your age group. That is hilarious! I don't know if I've ever done that, but if I ever get another chance, I very well might. I purge IG/FB from time to time. It's kind of an ongoing project!

    1. My age group is so much smaller than yours, so the women who are running at my age are pretty fast! I like to think I can hold my own, but I always get humbled. It's good for me.

  14. I am gross, I want to see black toenails and other similar gross pictures. :) I'm surprised IG flagged that post! I have a lot of people unfollowed on Facebook. It doesn't mean I don't "like" them it just may be I don't like to look at the things they post. I used to just unfriend people but I got confronted for doing that twice lol. It was awkward...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Really, someone confronted you for unfriending them? Ewww! I mean who cares? Those kind of people need to get a life....

    2. TWO PEOPLE! One confronted me at a party and one confronted me after a faculty meeting at school! It was sooooooooo awkward.

  15. I've been purging my social media feeds too especially FB - just too many groups and pages!

The ambassador drama can get to be a bit much sometimes - I've got one I'm thinking of stepping away from cause I just can't deal anymore.

I can't figure out how your self-defense post was rejected given some of the hashtags I've seen. Reminds me I haven't read that post - off to do so now!

    1. Yeah, the ambassador thing is really ridiculous. I can't believe some of these women!

  16. Sounds like that group needs some rule limits about the pictures.

I try to keep my FB timeline clean. I never got a notice about the data mining, and I think I'm safe. I don't click on stuff since I grew up with an IT person. I know how bad clicking on stuff can be.

  17. I sprained my ankle on April 3rd and I runfess that I didn't believe my doctor when he said it would take 6 weeks to heal. Turns out he was right. I'm still hobbling and trying not to be a total grump from my lack of activity.

I signed up for a Kindle giveaway and ended up receiving email newsletters from the 30+ authors. Did not plan on that! I've been unsubscribing for days.

  18. I've been trying to cleanup my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages recently as well. I really just want to see content that I 100% care about so I did a lot of unfollowing of brands/people.

That InkBurn FB group sounds a little bit our of control!

  19. I cleared out my FB friends/groups during the last election, haha. Not sure if knowing some people I interact with in real life are delusional about politics is better than keeping it a mystery, but there was too much laid out on FB for me to like a lot of these people who I formerly liked. Sad but true.

    1. I feel you on this. On the other hand, aren't you glad you know now?

  20. I'm in the FB cleanup club as well. Like you I'm hanging on to those people and brands that are my favorites or that apply to my life right now.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The security breach honestly doesn't bother me. It's more the people who are over dramatic about it. Like, you are purposely using a cell phone which collects data from you ALL THE TIME. Are you going to throw that away too? They have whatever you give them, be smart. BUT, I always try to keep my groups small for the sake of neatness so I'll definitely spring clean often. Also, eww about that group and posting a billion pictures.

    1. I pretty much think when you participate in any kind of social media, you're opening yourself up to data collection.

  22. Your runfessions are always some of my favorite! Haha, yes, you made the right call now showing us your black toenail haha! Unfollowing pages would be a good idea, I followed so many that I couldn't care less about, sigh.

Thankfully I never have to worry about my age group "competition"...it'd have to be a really, really small race in order for me to win an award!

    1. You're getting faster so never say never, my friend! Good luck this weekend!!!

  23. I try to pass people in my age group, little kids, white-haired people, really anyone I think I should be running faster than. Hehehe.
I really should clean up FB too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I too have been slowing working on cleaning up my social media accounts. I wonder why I even chose to follow certain pages/people in the first place...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I found myself unfollowing a whole bunch of pages a couple weeks ago. All of a sudden these pages were popping up in my feed that I had never seen before. And isn't it weird that people just randomly send friend requests? I dunno... strange to me at least.

    1. The whole weird pages popping up in my feed thing made me start my unfollowing frenzy. Many of them were unfamiliar to me. It was kind of creepy!

  26. I too am scaling back on FB, it's just too much. I manage a few pages for work so I find I'm on it more and more fo work too!

  27. I really need to clean up my FB feed as well. I just want to see pictures and posts. All the sharing crap, recipes and surveys are just ridiculous. I've had a few black toenails from running and while I have mentioned them ...I've spared everyone from any pictures. Some folks need to learn that not everything has to be shared!

    1. Truth! Social media has really lowered the standards for what people share. Some stuff needs to be kept private.

  28. You better believe I look for "old ladies" ahead of me in races! If someone passes me I do that sideways glance to see if they have wrinkles! LOL

  29. That INK ambassador with the oversharing of pics seems a little crazy! Wow! I need to do a little FB clean-up, but honestly, I'm pretty rarely on FB except to check in on a few groups. I'm with you on not sharing pics of black toenails and other running injuries. Words are plenty for me. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really need to get rid of a lot of stuff on FB. I seem to have liked pages and they randomly show up and I don't remember when or why I liked them! Haha
Black toenails are the thing of real runners! Hope it grows out soon!
That is an incredible pace! Wow! Great job getting out there and going after AG wins! :)

  31. Yeah, no toenails or blisters for me, please!

And my secret joy is passing men, esp YOUNG MEN, which I do in marathons even though I'm very slow, because I, you know, train for them and things, and sometimes they haven't. Come on young man, I bellow, I'm old enough to be your MOTHER. You can do it!
