Coffee Talk

Let's sit down and catch up over a cup of coffee. How do you take yours? Since attending my conference in downtown Chicago a few weeks ago, I've been loving on lattes. Soy or dairy, no matter. Give me that foamed milk and a shot of espresso. Yum!

Since I'm making coffee at home, it will be just half and half. I hope that's ok. So, tell me what's new...

"This winter just won't make like a tree and...it's been so long since I've seen leaves that I can't complete the saying without sobbing a little." ~Adrienne Martini, Another Mother Runner
If we were having coffee, yes, I'd talk about the weather. This week felt like we hit rock bottom. On Tuesday, I went to work in the cold and constant drizzle. My joints ached and I almost felt near tears. My coworkers were also feeling blah. It was a slow morning in the office and I went to Dunkin Donuts to get coffees for us. That completely turned us around. I was amazed at how sharing a cup of coffee together made us all feel so much happier. No, the weather didn't get any better, in fact, we woke up to snow on Wednesday morning. You can't change the weather but you can change your attitude.

If we were having coffee, I'd share that after picking up a prescription at Walgreens, I backed into a minivan that was driving behind me. I looked both ways before backing up, and in fact, I was already turning my steering wheel. I hit her with the corner of my bumper, which did a ridiculous amount of damage to the side of her car. The worst was when she opened the door and inside was the cutest little girl, sitting there sucking on her pacifier. Doh! No one was hurt and the woman was very nice. Much nicer than my husband was when I got home and told him what happened. And then I lost my wedding ring...

If we were having coffee, I'd share that my youngest son has narrowed down his college choices to 2 schools, University of Wisconsin and Marquette. He's leaning towards Wisconsin, but since Marquette offered him a scholarship, we're going to visit one last time this weekend. Wisconsin gives nothing to Illinois residents, unfortunately. But Matthew has wanted to be a Badger as long as I can remember, so if that's where he wants to go, we will make it happen. Stay tuned.

If we were having coffee, I'd also share that we attended Senior Night at my youngest son's gymnastics meet. He's been struggling with his routines this year. He came home from practice last week and showed me his hands, which looked like raw meat. He was happy though because he finally landed the move that has been giving him so much trouble. Unfortunately, on Senior Night, even though he landed the move, we had a huge scare when he fell off the high bar and seemed to bend his back completely backward as he hit the mat. He seems to be ok, which amazes me. Warning: graphic video.

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that The Mighty published another one of my blog posts! April's theme was the use of a self-drawn comic to share how RA makes us feel. You may have read this one on the blog.

Thanks for listening. Maybe we should have put some whiskey in our coffee. Here's to better weather and better days! Yes, Sammy Jo, I'm still smiling. Sort of.

Ok, it's your turn! What would you tell me over coffee? How's the weather by you? What's new?

I'm linking up with the all-new Friday 5 with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness. I think my post was a little longer than they were looking for! The "5-things" habit is going to be hard to break. I'm also linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

  1. I get the Badger love thing, but gosh it'd be hard to pass on that scholarship. Sigh. Would he go to Madison? So so glad Matt's back is ok!

    1. He would go to Madison. I think we're going to have to ask him to borrow the amount of the scholarship if he goes there. It's hard to pass up $$. He's struggling with the decision.

  2. I hear you on the weather. I was almost in tears when I saw we were supposed to get 8 inches of snow this weekend just in time for our Cherry Blossom race. It has now been revised to be rain! Ha why do they do it to us!? I hear you on the lattes. They taste so much better when someone else whips them up! See you tomorrow for coffee

  3. Sorry to hear about your accident. It is suppose to be in the 70s here but tomorrow they said chance of snow. SO crazy! The other day at work we were all feeling blah as well and then we found out they were offering free lunch and donuts to us. Everyone cheered up a bit.

  4. The weather (whomp whomp). My attitude is (almost) running on empty these days with the weather, but I know the end is in sight and we'll soon have glorious sunshine-filled days of warmth. Oh, that video! OUCH! Glad he's alright! I love watching gymnastics, but I'm thankful none of our kids ever took an interest in participating because I'd be a nervous piece of work.

  5. Thank goodness your son is okay. What a scare (No, I didn't look at the video. I heed "graphic" warning. I don't have a strong stomach). And, as some say in these parts, "Not for nuthin' buh" I'm glad no one fared poorly, except the cars, in your mishap. Have you found your wedding ring? Oh, my. z

Best wishes as your family makes its final decision on your son's college choice.

Weather? April 7 and I'm standing outside in sub-freezing weather scraping freaking frost from my windshield and back window! Just how I want to spend a Friday morning in April.

  6. The timing is certainly appropriate as I am sitting her enjoying my first cup of the day!

No way I can watch that video but I’m glad your son is okay. A couple years ago I backed into a (very low) pole. I broke my taillight and left a few scratches and dents on my car. When I told my husband you would have thought I’d killed someone. He still apologizes for his overreaction. 😉

  7. I have a half to run tomorrow and I’m anxious about the 80% chance of storms. Rain is okay, but storms?? I have to runfess, I don’t really want to go. I’ve been in full spring break mode this week. Laaaazy and loving it!

  8. OMG that video!!! Glad he's okay. All three of my boys pole vaulted, of all things. It's an exciting sport, but so terrifying! Michael went to State and it is amazing to see how high those kids can jump. Sorry about your accident. The wedding ring thing cracked me up!

    2. Oops! I seriously thought you meant you 'LOST' your wedding ring because of the way he reacted to the accident because it was the next immediate statement after you said it. So glad you found it!!! I can barely pry mine off these days, but there are times I feel like 'losing' it!

    3. I took it off to lift weights and put it in my wallet, but when I went to retrieve it, it was gone. I couldn't believe it and let me tell you, neither did he. I am SO glad this week is over!

  9. I would love to send my older son to Madison, but yeah, that out of state thing is killer. We have a bit more time yet, but I'm already stressed about college. I'm also so over this winter - or at least the constant up and down of temps. Today is supposed to be in the 60s. Tomorrow snow. WTF?

  10. Weather-wise this week has just sucked. Cloudy & rainy (with a little snow in there) most days. And when it was actually sunny, winter-like cold and insanely windy. At least it looks like we'll thaw out next week! It's about time!

I had planned on a trail race tomorrow but my friend can't go and frankly I'm fair weather when it comes to trails (except for that muddy half).

I'm so sorry about the fender bender. I got into one a few years back. My car barely had any damage but it still cost an insane amount to get it fixed.

I'm glad your son is ok! That must have been horrifying to watch.

  11. I hear you on the weather! Its snowing right now as I type outside and I am not happy about it.
My sister does gymnastics and her hands look like raw meat as well from bars, so many blisters and tares.
That really stinks about the fender bender!

  12. Ugh...the weather...I'm done with it. It's stupid cold and calling for snow tonight. Seriously!!!
Sorry to hear about your car but kinda excited to get published again! Lots going on!

  13. No complaints about the weather here. It was so beautiful Tuesday morning when I went out for a trail run. 4 miles straight up, then about 1.5 miles from my car I twisted my ankle and went down.HARD. This the worst I've ever done. I had my physical yesterday and my doctor said my right ankle is definitely sprained. (I didn't mentioned my wonked up shoulder to him.) He said it will take about 6 weeks to heal. I also got a shot in each arm (tetanus and pneumonia) so I spent last night going from one side to the other - those little buggers hurt! He didn't say no cycling (I might not have asked), so I'm hoping to ride tomorrow. I probably won't try running until the swelling is gone.

    1. You can take ibuprofen, right? Sounds like you need it all over! I hope your ankle heals quickly. I don't see why you couldn't bike...but you know me, I'd do it...

  14. my god!! I am so glad he is ok! that looked like an awful fall! before the fall, he looked like he was doing amazing!! how did you get him into Gymnastics? I have tried to get my son excited about gymnastics for years, but he keeps giving me the "My dad says gymnastics is for girls" answer that drives me insane!!

I am glad everybody is ok after that accident!

  16. OMG that video!!! I cannot imagine what you felt as you watched that happen to your son. I'm so glad he's ok!! The human body is amazing. Just wow. And yes, this weather is the worst. As I type this, it's snowing. I'm afraid my half IM on June 3 is going to be FREEZING!!!! Congrats on your second published post - that is truly awesome. Hope you have a great weekend...no matter the weather.

  20. I know better than to watch anything labeled graphic - yikes! Glad he came out unscathed.

And since it's the weekend, I think it's acceptable to put some whiskey in our coffee.

  21. This was definitely a rough week of weather. In typical Baltimore fashion, we had a brief few hours of warm weather yesterday afternoon before the cold returns this weekend. The rain/cold combo was not good earlier in the week and then the wind got brutal. Sorry about your car accident. Glad your son is ok! Did you find your wedding ring?

  22. Oh, gosh, what a week! Car accidents suck -- and "fender benders" can be so expensive. I guess the cars are made to crush so the passengers don't, but ... Yikes on your son's fall. I would have been sick seeing that happen. Glad he seems OK!

Thanks for joining in for coffee!

And the weather??? I am simply annoyed. I am actually looking forward to going back to work next week so I don't mope anymore about the weather. At least being in the classroom will keep me occupied.

  25. Oh my gosh, that video- you must have been sick, seeing that- I hate how cars are so easily crumpled now- I remember hitting or getting my bumper hit in the older cars that actually had a real bumper and the car wouldn't even have a dent- now they require $$- a racket! On the positive side, congrats on your published article! That is some balance in life!

  27. We had a glorious week of weather here in Vegas this past week. They kept talking about a windstorm this weekend, though, so we'll see how that shakes out. It is amazing how sharing a cup of coffee with some coworkers can change the day. At our office, sometimes it's just stepping away from the craziness and taking a breather. Congrats on getting your post published and good luck to your son!

Sorry about the car accident and losing your wedding ring ...you have had a rough week, haven't you? As we say here in the south ...'bless your heart'! Hope you find the ring soon and that you guys get some warmer weather soon ...I know you all are just so stinking sick of winter!

  30. HI Wendy! Glad your son seems to be okay! If we were having coffee, I would tell you that although I joked about not traveling over Spring Break (and loved your witty comeback, BTW), I am so glad that we stayed home and rested. As I teacher with over 20 years experience, you would *think* I don't still stress and have the "dream"--the one where you do something stupid and get fired, oversleep and get fired, mess up testing and get fired--but I had ALL THREE this week! Talk about a needed break! The weather here has been up and down, but the pollen has been nice and consistent (insert eye roll). Final thing: I *still* haven't run since the marathon (early January). I'm wondering if I will ever get back to it :/

  36. Your son should apply for the Wisconsin Alumni Association Chicago chapter’s scholarship. WAA-Chicago awards thousands of dollars each year to incoming freshmen. It is highly competitive, but a sizable award. Ithe deadline may have already passed for this year, but it’s worth looking into. ON WISCONSIN!
