Runfessions July

Summer is just flying by! I've been having so much fun--in fact, maybe it's been a little too much fun! Thank goodness for Marcia and the runfessional. Just when I think I'm about to burst, around comes the last Friday of the month where we can unburden our soles. Brace yourself. I've got some good ones.

I runfess...that as much as I love free race photos, I was a little disappointed with these from the AMITA FitAmerica 5k I ran last weekend. Guys, I really did run across the finish line. You get what you pay for, I guess.

I runfess.... after I finished running that Christmas in July race a couple of weeks ago, I made a detour to Whole Foods to pick up some groceries for the week. I went to a store I don't usually shop at and made a quick turn into the parking lot. I stopped at a stop sign in front of the store and in my rearview mirror, I spied a police car with the lights on. Crap! Apparently, I turned left into the parking lot where there was a no left turn sign. I apologized because I didn't see the sign. I couldn't find my insurance card and I apologized again. I finally located the card online and when I walked back to the police car, he scolded at me for approaching his car. I didn't know that was forbidden and I apologized. In the end, I received a warning ticket and a directive to 'stop apologizing'.

Last month, I received an offer to trial socks from My Soxy Feet. I responded to the email and heard back from the company. The owner, to her credit and my shame, realized I was a former ambassador. In spite of that, she sent me a pair of those cute Run Chicago socks but made a snide comment about those emails being sent out by a PR firm. She must not have purged the list because I received another email about breast cancer socks being promoted by the company. I runfess that I responded to the email, with the no-so-high-hopes for another pair of socks. You can't blame a sock obsessed blogger for trying, can you?

At last Saturday's 5k, I was introduced to a woman who was going to pace the 2:05 half marathon group. During my 5k I saw her running ahead of me. Or should I say she was walking ahead of me? I figured she just dropped her pacer sign and jumped onto the 5k route. It was a hot day.  I runfess that at the finish, I went up to her and congratulated her on making a smart decision by dropping down to the 5k. She looked at me like I was smoking something. I commented about her being a pacer and she responded that she wasn't a pacer. Ummm, ok....

Also at last Saturday's race, I saw the race director from last weekend's disastrous Christmas in July race. I runfess that I had the thought that maybe he was taking notes on how to prepare for a summer race? He also ran the 5k and finished 2d in his AG. I hope he enjoyed his medal as much as I'm enjoying my shotglass. Oh, and by the way, Mr RD: there was Gatorade at the aid stations of this race....

I have to runfess that as much as I love summer, I loathe running in the heat. Loathe. Please don't tell me to 'zip it'. You know who you are. Last week, I shared a photo on my IG from last winters' polar vortex and while that extreme is unpleasant as well, most of the commenters agreed with me that cool weather running rocks. I don't understand you hot weather runners at all. Maybe the delirium from heat exhaustion makes it easier?

A post-race cop stop tops my runfessions for the month /via @oldrunningmom @teamarcia #runchat #running #runfessions

What do you have to runfess? Are police more surly these days or was it just me? What is your favorite brand of socks? Is there shame in dropping your distance at a race? Hot weather lovers, what makes you love the hot run?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness.

  2. I had to laugh at your encounter at Whole Foods! :) I get all flustered too during the very few times I have been stopped by a cop. So funny that he told you to "stop apologizing"!

I do love running in the summer, but this past week has been just crazy! I had to skip my usual Christmas in July race this year, since I will be traveling. Maybe it's for the best...

    1. The cop was such a jerk. Pretty sure he had his hand on his taser the whole time.

  3. Ok it's me and I won't tell you to zip. Free speech LOL

I have dropped down from 10k to 5k many times!! It's often the smartest thing to do.

I LOVE summer because of the sunshine and the longer days. I love going to the lake. I love running outdoors without a zillion layers. End of my soapbox.Winters are so LOOOONG!!!!

  4. That is kind of a funny cop story! At least you were able to get away w a warning. I think there are so many people who are aggressive towards them that they have to be on high alert. I once got pulled over w 4 other cars for going 35 in a 25. I profusely apologized and I had history of tickets. He gave everyone else a ticket and told me I could go bc I was the only polite one. Go figure! Still ticket free :)

  5. I don't get people who enjoy hot weather running either. It's not that I like running in the cold, but I'll still take it over a hot, humid run. But I do enjoy summer, and when it's nice like it's been the last few days here (changing as I type), I love *those* summer runs.

Ouch about all the interactions with the cop. I could see myself probably doing all of that . . .

  6. There is zero shame in dropping down in distance. Seriously who cares?? I don't love hot running. I tolerate it...or work around it with another activity. That said, I'm so grateful I'm not training for anything. Many years ago I rolled through a stop sign in my neighborhood and found the cop behind me as I pulled into my own driveway. Hubby came out of the house to see what was going on and was screamed at to "not approach". The cop had his hand on his gun. I mean really.

    1. I'm not sure what to make of my recent cop encounter! Seriously, I was wearing a race bib and dripping with sweat.

  7. Definitely no shame in dropping the distance during the race (as long as you do it honestly and not cutting the course). I've gone from 10k to 5k a couple times, once was an impromptu decision due to the heat and once was because I had tendinitis but I figured I could do the shorter distance with the injury. No regrets!

  8. OK back when I could run, I ran early in the morning to avoid the summer sun - never could avoid the heat/humidity, even at 6:00 am. But when I see runners out at 5 or 6 in the afternoon? They are crazy! ;)

    1. I have to think that those late afternoon runners are either a) nuts or b) not going very far.

  9. I don't get a real winter down here in Texas but I am team winter all the way lol. I enjoy the chilly weather and have run my best races in cold down pours so I'm always here for it. I suck it up with the heat but I'm counting the days deep down lol.

  10. Think I've mentioned this before--I run really early (4:30 AM) and use a knuckle light for safety. I was running up the long hill that's at the end of my run and I was running in the street with NO traffic. A copy drove up behind me and told me to get on the sidewalk, the one with cracks and leaves and all around wretched slanted surfaces. Even with the knuckle light, you can't see the surface, it's just a mess. But instead of leaving me alone to finish that hill, he had to get all up in my face. Ticked me off and I'll confess (runfess) I came thisclose to playing my US Army veteran card.

  11. While I don't want to wish the days away, I'm ready to be done with summer running!

    That policeman sounds charming...yikes!

  12. I like summer fridays and the beach. I don't like summer running. #TeamAnyThingButSummerButEspeciallySpringAndFall
Mm socks. My SIL got me hooked on Bombas

  13. Yikes on the traffic stop — although it hardly seems to count as a “traffic “ stop. Glad he didn’t give you a ticket. That seems like over kill. I did get a ticket once, I followed a line of cars turning left — right into a line of cops giving tickets. I think it was a new sign and they were trying to make people notice . :-(

    1. Oh that would just make me mad! I guess the police are trying to make money, just like everyone else...

  14. I had no idea you're not allowed to approach a police officer. What do you do if you need to ask the way? Maybe it's different here. Humph. And that is a shame about that race photo. I have some weird ones from Race to the Stones, but they were free ...

  15. Funny cop story.
I dropped down once from 10K to 5K and once from 21,1k to 10k: I did the right thing.
And once again I retired because the path of 12 k was 4 laps with a very long flight of steps to climb and to go down; I didn't want to risk an injury.

  16. Ha ha! at least you didn't get a ticket. I love the summer time but not use to running when it is super hot and humid out so I am more of a cold weather runner. Hey, I am just happy if I can run at all so I will take whatever I can get. Features are my go to socks.

  17. On my Friday 2.5-hr drive to pick up the hubby, I realized an hour into said drive that I'd left my purse (with wallet, driver license AND lipstick...you know, all the essentials) on the chair by my back door. And, we weren't due back home until late Saturday afternoon. Thankfully, the drive was without incident and I didn't need to apologize to anyone in uniform. A bonus...the people at my race expo didn't require an ID for packet pick-up, and the guy took my word for my age in giving out my drinking wrist band (which I didn't even wind up using LOL).
