Am I Losing My Mind?

Nah. Although sometimes it feels that way!

I've been pretty distracted lately and that's made for some slip ups. Like wearing 2 different shoes to CrossFit. Forgetting to tip the nail technician who gave me my pedicure. No worries, I took care of it once I realized what I'd done. Oh, and I forgot we had tickets to the orchid show at the botanic gardens. I told my husband that we should consider it a donation.

He wasn't amused. But hey, I remembered to pay the real estate taxes and that was a win.

I'm not sure why this is happening, but I think I've got too much on my mind. Changes at work, insomnia, coronavirus, people texting me about coronavirus, events being cancelled, trying to keep up with social media, my upcoming trip to Florida...well, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.

It's all a reminder to be more mindful and present. I've started setting alerts for events I put on the calendar. I need to take a social media break, or at least set limits on my screen time. Do more yoga. I'm hoping my week away will be a good reset.

We'll see.

Weekly Rundown:
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: rest day

Thursday: Strength training, Bootcamp
Friday: rest day
Saturday: unplanned rest day
Sunday: run 10 miles

Running
Wednesday's run took me on the trails and with the change from winter to spring, the ice is melting and the trails were muddy in spots. Really muddy. I was happy that I stayed upright--there were a few moments on the slick leaf covered mud that I wasn't sure how it was going to end. The last mile of the trail was pure mud. I did a lot of walking because there just wasn't anywhere to run. With the exception of that section, I thoroughly enjoyed this run. The birds were singing and I could smell some hints of spring in the air. Once again, I was reminded of how lucky I am that I get to do this.

I woke up early Saturday morning with plans to run before I went to work. But when my alarm went off in the dark and I saw that it was 22 degrees outside, I made the decision to skip my run. I never do that--but I had no regrets. With my long run planned for Sunday, I hoped to get up early and go, but the time change had me waking up at 7:30. I got out the door on on the trail by about an hour later. No breakfast and strong winds made this run difficult. I was kind of shocked when I saw my average pace--it was decent--but chalk that up to the miles I ran with the wind at my back. There's an elk herd in this forest preserve and they were pretty frisky this morning! Spring fever, I guess!

I don't love that these guys are penned in but I do love seeing them.

CrossFit
During the warm-up at Monday's CrossFit class, I looked down at my feet and realized I was wearing 2 different shoes. One CrossFit shoe and one running shoe. Distracted much? You would have thought I'd notice something odd, but since I with my orthotics each shoe, they didn't feel different. One I saw what I'd done, that's when I noticed how different they felt. Of course, we all had a good laugh about it...

Anyhoo, the WOD was a good one! We started out with strength: 5x5 deadlifts at 65-70% (I did 140#) alternating with 5 x :30 plank holds. The MetCon was an E2MOM of an 8cal assault bike ride and AMRAP power snatches. Thankful that I worked on those overhead squats last week with Sammy Jo--this went really smoothly! We alternated that with an 8cal row and AMRAP front rack lunges. I did 40# for both strength moves. This got my heart pounding and I ended up with a total score of 85 (combined snatches and lunges).

We did a Speed Dating workout for Bootcamp! This was a fun workout comprised of 6 AMRAPs: Cindy, Annie, Jackie-ish, Debbie, and Betty. Fun Fact: Did you know that the founder of CrossFit named all the workouts after his exgirlfriends? I loved this class!

Strength
Sammy Jo continues to work me hard towards my goal of improving my endurance. She had me do 3 sets of 10 heavy back squats (105#) alternating with 10 strict presses (45#). I couldn't feel my legs on the last 3 squats of each set, which made her happy. I think that's why I was smiling--it was either that or cry and I wasn't feeling tearful. After that she had me do some triceps work and GHD sit ups.

How was your week? Is it starting to feel like spring where you are? What do you do to keep yourself mindful?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I am definitely more forgetful when I have a ton of stuff going on. This usually happens to me during the holidays.

I can't imagine how many questions you are getting in reference to Coronavirus - ugh! Hopefully the hysteria will end soon because it seems like people are losing their minds.

    1. The panic over COVID19 had me pretty cranky by the end of the day on Friday. I'm not panicking and I see sick people all day every day. Plus I'm immunosuppressed. Let's all just calm down and keep washing our hands.

  2. When I'm tired I'm a lot more forgetful. I suppose I had a good week on that front because pretty much all I did was rest!

I've grabbed the same side shoe before -- so wasn't able to run on that quick trip to my parents. So far I haven't worn 2 different shoes, but I'm staying mum on whether or not I've ever grabbed 2 different shoes. :)

    All first world problems, right?

    1. As long as my forgetfulness doesn't hurt anyone, then it's all good.. But I'm pretty sure forgetfulness is universal, not just first world...

  3. The past few weeks I have been really forgetful too. I could not remember where I put my new bra yesterday. Still have not found it! ha ha Pretty solid week of training for you! Thanks for joining us today

  4. Add me to the forgetful list - of course I blame it on ramping up medication but it's still a PITA when I realize I've screwed something up AGAIN. I did have to laugh at your different shoes - haven't done that one yet but it's a good possibility, LOL. We have plans for a Florida trip in a couple of months and I'm hoping we can go. Would be a real bummer if it got cancelled.

  5. The last time I wore two different shoes to work (both white sneakers - one Reebok and one Nike - was when I was pregnant with my youngest son. It was on a day that I was opening the gym at 6 AM and I always got dressed in the dark so I wouldn't bother my husband. LOL

    1. I don't even have the dark as an excuse! Plus I brought my grocery bags into the gym, lol

  6. Stress and lack of sleep definitely impact mental acuity. I try to multi-task less so I am paying attention to what I am doing and then don’t forget that I’ve done it! I’m glad I’m not the only one with shoe mishaps, but at least yours was workable. ;-)

    1. It was pretty funny! But yeah, lucky for me, it didn't impact my workout.

  7. I hit a couple of mud patches on the trail too this week. The kind where you swear to yourself and hope it doesn't end up the "wrong" way. I live by my calendar and alerts. The struggle is real!

  9. Finally starting to feel like Spring in Iowa!!!! Hmmm, so is naming CrossFit workouts a thing? Maybe I'm on to something with naming my equipment...sort of LOL Enjoy the reset...we all need that from time to time.

    1. I explained it in the post, but Crosssfit workouts are named after the founder's ex-girlfriends. Are those names your giving your equipment ex-boyfriends? Or girlfriends?

  10. The other day I was rushing to get to a run to meet a friend, and I put my shorts on backwards. Once I noticed, it kept bothering me. Reminds me of your two different shoes. :)

  11. I swear I have to write everything down these days...and if I'm super tired just forget it...my memory is seriously suspect.

Looks like you had a strong week!

  12. Aw yeah when your shoes are that muddy, that's a real run. Have a good trip to FL and a great race this week!

  13. I love seeing you on the trails! It's such a good change of pace (literally!) from the roads. I'm still laughing at your shoe mishap. At least you didn't wear two different ones to work like me one day. They were both black but two different brands. It made people laugh so it's all good! ;)

Thank you for all the support with the trail runs! I'm happy that I've found the trails around me!

  14. Elk. Wow. Not something I'd associate with Chicago suburbs.
Glad you had such a solid week.

  15. Elk! Interesting...I would feel a little sad that they are behind a fence, but hopefully they are treated well and have a good life!

Two different shoes! Like you said on my blog though, at least you didn't forget to register for an out of town race!!!

  16. Insomnia is not an easy one to deal with - hope it’s only temporary 😬
Haha, I saw two elephants on a safari yesterday. They were playing around in the mud - just like humans running a muddy trail. It’s so much fun! 😊

  17. I feel that way sometimes too when I am juggling too much. It can be hard to focus when you have too much on your mind! Thats too funny about your shoes. They do look pretty similar so I could see how it could happen. I try to buy shoes that are very different colors so I haven't made that mistake...yet.

  18. At work yesterday I was trying to call a co-worker but every time I dialed the extension my phone would ring so I would disconnect to answer it and they wouldn't be there. I did it 2 or 3 times before realizing I was dialing my extension. We got a good laugh about it, but dang, what is wrong with my head?!
Looks like you had a great week of workouts. Stay strong Wendy! You rock!

  19. Oh me too! I blame twins. I'll probably use that excuse until they go to college. :-)
Hope you have a good week.

  20. My kids usually buy lunch at school on Friday, which is great because I am so tired of packing school lunches. Well, on Thursday last week I announced it was pizza day, and the kids were buying lunch, so I just sent them on their way without lunches. I didn't realize it was NOT Friday until about 3pm that day. Oops. That was really scatterbrained of me! I have those days too :)

  21. I'm definitely more forgetful recently as well. That's a good idea of limiting screen time and more yoga. I keep meaning to add some meditation to my day but forget. That's so cool you were able to see elk during your run!

I laughed about the shoes :) good that you could too!

good week - maybe this one is a bit more sharp!

  23. I've been a bit unfocused after my surgery, sadly, but I just write things down and set alerts and alarms when I have to. It's annoying, but it is what it is.

You are crushing your crossfit. And quite frankly those two shoes are close enough. I probably would have mistaken them for a pair!

I just do my best to keep myself on track. I've stopped watching tv again (music only during the day), and that's helping.

  24. Ah, memory loss. I've convinced myself that it's because over the years we have so many important things stored in our brains that there just isn't room for things like orchid shows and tipping. I put everything in my calendar and that really helps because I can set extra alerts far enough ahead of time just in case.
