Coffee Talk

Let's catch up over coffee! What are you having? I've got some Starbucks Spring Day Blend that was on the clearance at Target last week. If you remember, I had it last spring and loved it! It tastes just as good on a summer day, especially with a scoop of GLG Collagen and a splash of half and half.

It's been a pretty eventful couple of weeks for me, and if you haven't read any of my other posts, you might want to check them out.

Yep, I bought this shirt, lol

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I lost a ton of hair last week, due to my accident. I was washing my hair after we got back from our vacation in Door County and as I was combing conditioner through it, the comb came away full of clumps of my hair. After I got out of the shower to dry off and comb it, more hair came out in clumps. The shower drain was also full of hair. It was frightening to see all that hair! I got my hair cut this past weekend, and my stylist told me that hair loss is common after a trauma like mine.

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I finally hired cleaning people again. During the pandemic, my long-time cleaning lady retired to care for her grandchildren. I've been doing the cleaning myself, but between the road construction and my broken leg, my house was gross. When the new cleaning lady came over to give me an estimate, she rubbed her finger on the blinds and said 'dirty'. Ok, I know...so a team of 3 ladies came this week and spent over 3 hours cleaning my house. It is so nice and I'll be having them come back once a month. We're also getting the windows washed. The new carpet is coming next week! The permit for the driveway has been approved! The road work is just about done. Home sweet home again.

If we were having coffee, I'd share that I watched the WORST movie I've seen in a long time. My husband went up to the lake to do some work, so I dialed up Marathon Movie, which is a 'mockumentary' about 5 people who are training to run a marathon in the desert. It got 92% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so who was I to pass it up? Let me just tell you it was so STUPID. I think they were going for a Best in Show or This is Spinal Tap (both movies that I love) vibe but it just wasn't funny. They did nail the whiny BQ wannabe who was injured, but he just wasn't funny either. That's 82 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. I've completely lost my trust in Rotten Tomatoes as well.

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you I am having regrets about not getting to see the Chicago Cubs earlier this year before they had their fire sale last week. If you don't live in Chicago, you probably aren't aware that they traded all their marquee players. But if your team was one of the lucky recipients of our beloved Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, or Javi Baez, then you are probably celebrating because they all hit home runs with their new teams! The Cubs traded a few other good players too. It's just so hard to be a Chicago sports fan. Maybe I'll go see the White Sox instead. They got a couple of Cubs players too. They also have a better beer selection than Wrigley Field.

If we were having coffee, I'd share that my mini-book reviews are now in their own post! I read 8 books last month and already finished another good one. In other book news, I applied for the Read Out and Read program for my clinic and it was approved! Reach Out and Read is a program where pediatric providers give age-appropriate books to children age 6 months to 5 years old at their well-child visits. With all the screen time kids are exposed to, reading books has become more important than ever! I initiated this program at my previous clinic and the kids just loved it. So many kids don't even own books. I'm going to have to work on some fundraising initiatives to support my little program, as my employer doesn't budget for things like this.

What would you tell me over coffee? What's the worst movie you've seen lately? Have you ever lost a lot of hair due to a traumatic event? Are you a baseball fan? Do you have cleaning people?

I'm linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday:  DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida.

  1. I had no idea that hair loss after a trauma is common. Hopefully it all comes back as your body continues to heal.

I just love that you started the reading program at your clinic! So important, especially now. I mentioned in my post today that I want to step back from all of my screen time to read more - I don't want to even think about how much time kids are spending in front of a screen!

    1. It's really bad--the worst is that parents don't get it. They think that when the screens read to their kids, it's a good thing.

  2. Ugh on the hair loss. I went through that last year as a side-effect of my Graves — I was grateful to be isolating due to Covid. Thanks for the warning on the movie. Maybe you have to not be a runner to enjoy it.

Thanks for your book reviews. I started Who Is Maud …

  3. I had never heard about the hair loss situation. That would scare me too! I hope it all grows back quickly as you heal. I am not a huge baseball fan but my boys are. We went to a game in Chicago adn one this week here in DC. Seems like a lot of the teams made some trades that had fans fuming. Love Wrigley field though. Good luck w your reading program love it!

  4. Yikes on the hair loss. I never knew it could be related to trauma. I'm still flying solo on house cleaning and I think I'm going to stay that way for awhile. I'm traumatized from our last cleaning crew! We will need to have the widows cleaned once the kitchen reno is done. Congrats on the reading program. That is so awesome!

    1. This cleaning crew is a tough crowd, but they did a good job, so I just have to suck it up, lol

  5. Yikes! Clearly, I need to go back and read some posts. Sorry you've been going through all this. And I was not aware about hair loss after trauma. Losing hair like that is so scary- this happened to me after I had my thyroid removed. I was freaking out a bit. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hugs!

  6. Ah, the Cubs. I grew up in a north suburb of Chicago (Highland Park) where literally every single person was a Cubs fan. Cubs forever! But... in recent years my sister and her husband have become increasingly unhappy with a number of things and well, last time I visited them her husband was wearing a White Sox cap, GASP! So I guess things really have changed.
I'm glad you hired cleaning people! There's no way you could keep up with the house with your foot situation. And it feels so good to have it nice and clean, right?

  7. Thankfully, so far, knock on wood, I guess that I haven't had a very traumatic event. So thankfully no hair loss there.

My home? The poor cleaning ladies would probably have a heart attack. And no, I won't be hiring any anytime soon. It would be nice, but not happening. I have seriously never really figured out how to get the dust out of the damn blinds -- thankfully we really only have them in our bathrooms.

Reach out & read sounds like an awesome program. I always had my nose in a book as a kid! Congrats!

  8. Oh goodness, hair loss like that can be so scary! I often lose a lot of hair by brushing but I admit I have a ton of hair!
Your road construction is still going on? That seems like it has been going on for a while. I'm sure you will be happy to get your house clean and back in order.

I shared a few books I've finished last month in my blog post as well. Have a good weekend!

  10. Ugh, I feel you on the Cubs trading players. The Nats traded Max Scherzer and Trey Turner and I'm sick about it.

I had no idea how much trauma could affect hair loss. I'm sorry to hear that's one more thing that you're dealing with. Take care!

    1. Thankfully, the hair loss has stopped. It's like it all fell out at once and now I'm back to normal. Whew!

  11. The hair loss would totally freak me out. Our bodies do such weird things when trauma sets in. Myself, I go through phases of eczema breakouts. As much as I love the heat of summer, the humidity intensifies the experience (and not in a good way). The reading program sounds like a fabulous initiative!

    1. My boys always used to have eczema breakouts in the summer. Not necessarily due to stress. But it makes sense!

  12. Wow, I've never heard of that movie but I know now to never watch it, lol. It sounds horrible!

Sorry to hear about the hair loss :( The same thing happened to me after a surgery a few years ago but it did grow back healthier so that's a plus!

  13. That's really rough with the hair loss situation! :[ I hope it all grows back as you heal (+ that you have a smooth recovery! <3 ). I'm glad you got an effective cleaning crew!

That's awesome that you got the Read Out + Read program approved at your clinic! It's so important to get kids reading! <3

    1. I guess I'm not as worried about the hair loss as I am about the broken bones. It was just one of those weird things.

  14. Sorry to hear about your hair loss; I didn't know that this is a common situation after a trauma.
In Italy baseball is not popular, here people get crazy for football (I don't). I am a rugby fan: we have a different philosophy, the supporters watch the matches all together in a friendly way and there are not brawls among them (as it often happens before, during and after the football matches).

  15. I'm so sorry to hear about your trauma. I will have to check back a few posts and see what happened. I hope you are feeling better.

I have been thinking about finally hiring someone to clean my house - I just need to pick someone and move forward! I think it would bring so much peace of mind.

That's great about the Reach Out and Read program! Baby E has been receiving books from the pediatrician at all of her well visits and it's so great for her!

  16. I would definitely donate to your kids reading program if you need any funding. Books have always and continue to be a lifeline for me. What a great thing you are doing!! Let us know if you need help.

    Continued healing well.
    Hugs to you.

  17. Now that I think of it, it kind of makes sense that stress and trauma can lead to hair loss. Interesting that there's a connection between them.

It's so wonderful the 3 ladies you hired cleaned your house and it's now super clean and nice. It sounds like you have quite a few home improvement projects going on!
