Running in A Snow Globe

If you read Friday's post, you know that Chicago got hit with a whopper of a storm and I was agonizing over the possibility of not traveling to Birmingham. I prepared this post in advance hoping that today, I would be in Birmingham with Holly and I was able to run the Mercedes Half Marathon! I'll have a full recap on the race for you later in the week.

Meanwhile, let's wrap up the week in the snow globe!

Running
With the upcoming race, I planned on some easy paced runs. I don't formally taper before a half marathon, but I don't push it on my runs either. The snow kind of forced me to slow down, which was actually kind of nice. Both my runs on Tuesday and Wednesday were cold but the wind was light and I really enjoyed them. This was winter running at its finest. On Wednesday, I ran at the pond. There were very few people there, only walkers, but I saw a guy wipe out. I'm not sure what he slipped on because the path was pretty clear, but as I approached him I saw it happen. He tried valiantly to stay upright but could not get his legs underneath him. I stopped and he said he was ok, but he looked a little shaken up. Having fallen before, I know how much it hurts. I didn't laugh, even though he looked funny because been there, done that and Karma is a meany.

CrossFit
I only did one session again this week, opting out of Monday because I was wiped out after Sunday's long run. Sammy Jo made me work extra hard, combining strength and conditioning for one kickass session. I was ready for those hills of Birmingham!

Apparently I do deadlifts with my eyes closed. Maybe it was to shut out the pain of 145# x5 reps.

These ring pull-ups are deceptively hard.
Yoga
Instead of CrossFit on Monday, I did a FiveParksYoga video called Hour of Power. What was I thinking? I won't lie, it was excellent, but it was hard! So I guess I got some conditioning in with my yoga. On Wednesday after my run, I did her quick post-workout stretch. I've been enjoying getting back to yoga and my INKnBURN ambassadors continue to have a pose of the week. Last week's Wild Thing pose (a variation of plank) was featured on INKnBURN's Instagram page!

This week's pose was twisted chair.
Good News!
I received the most excellent news this week! I have been selected to be a Zooma National Ambassador! I'm excited and honored to represent this empowering women's race series. This year's races are in Austin, TX, Lake Geneva, WI, Cape Cod, MA, and Amelia Island, FL. I'll be running the Zooma Great Lakes Half Marathon in September! Come join me and run the beautiful area of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. If you want to sign up, you can save 10% by using my code: WENDY2018

  1. I like your bright colored clothes as you run through your snow globe! It's very balmy and rainy here today and our snow is melting, however I am afraid of slipping on hidden ice somewhere and ending up like the man you saw on your run! Congrats on becoming a Zooma ambassador!

    1. The snow isn’t so bad for running, but the freeze thaw cycle makes for some slippery conditions! I’m ready for spring too!

  2. Congrats on the ambassadorship! And kudos on the ring pull ups. I don't know if I could even do one! I'm back to working out after my cold and hit my goal pace for my long run yesterday so all around I'm happy with that. As for the weather....I'm just ready for spring!

    1. Sounds like you’re recovering nicely from your cold! And yes, bring on spring!

  3. Hmmmm, a good thing that happened for me? The three times I ran outside this week (in the cold temps and quick-sand-like snow), felt good. I had forgotten what that kind of snow feels like (and so did my hips), but not much slipping, NO falling, and I didn't even feel very cold. That said, I'm still most eager for winter to be done.

  4. It certainly was a snow globe. I did my long run on the mill Friday and then went outside Saturday. Congrats on the Ambassadorship!

  5. Congratulations on Zooma! We are having a grey winter -- ice and rain but no snow. I have to be careful what I wish for, but I sort of hope we do get some snow!

  6. Great week Wendy!! I’ve enjoyed seeing your pictures from Mercedes! How fun for you and Holly to run together again! I am just thankful I made it through my training runs and pageant week with my two daughters! I can breathe a huge sigh of relief! Hope you have another great week!

  7. The Annapolis Zooma was my first half ever about 10 years ago. It's a great running city. I would love to do one of their other races in Wisconsin or Amelia Island someday. Congrats on being an ambassador! We had not snow but tons of rain. I hope we get at least one nice snow day instead of just ice

  8. Congratulations on the Zooma ambassadorship!! That's really awesome! I'm glad that guy was okay. I've slipped on the ice too and that's no fun. Great job getting out there with the snow and I'm glad you were able to make it to Birmingham! Something good that happened this week? Well, I didn't get hit by a car. LOL! Oh wait, I got invited to join an international honor society at school - that's definitely good! :)

  12. What a snow globe indeed! We had icy weather here and we went for a walk Sunday and it was a little treacherous. Being 26 weeks pregnant, I haven't been running on the ice but that means I haven't had a run in a while! I miss getting out for runs. Is it spring yet?

    1. I am ready for spring! I don't mind the snow but now we'll be in that thaw/freeze cycle--makes for some icy condiitons!

  13. I would say that I'm jealous of your snow, but I'd better be care that I don't jinx myself. I suppose at this point I'd rather have an almost snow-free winter and just get on with an early spring.

I'm sure you and Holly had a great time and a fun race!

    Thanks for the linkup!

  21. Congrats on your ZOOMA Ambassadorship. And very glad you got out of Dodge! Right about now I'd like to be sick somewhere warm -- my sister just got back from a well deserved vacation to Mexico.

Actually, really hoping to feel better because it's supposed to warm up in these parts in a few days.

  22. I've tripped over thin air and fallen on clear, dry sidewalk...not laughing at that guy either. I've actually only fallen on ice once (at the end of my own driveway, of course) - I guess the hazardous conditions force me to pay better attention?

    1. Oh, I fall over nothing. It's ridiculous. But the way the guy fell right in front of me was kind of odd.

  24. Weather here is wet and damp and humid. Typical Charleston. It is unseasonably hot though with temps in the 70s (just looking at all the snow you guys get makes me cold).

Chair pose is HARD! Twisted chair is hard too... my quads always scream at me in either of those at yoga classes.

  33. Wow! That ring pull up photo looks awesome. I'm glad you were able to travel. The snow here is different than Midwest snow (less humidity/ice) so our airport never cancels flights. (Plus, I think we only have one or two runways to maintain!) When I lived in Columbus I was always worried about cancelations. Nerve-wracking!
