False Spring Runfessions

It's raining, it's pouring, it's time for runfessions!

If anyone should 'fess, it should be Mother Nature! Once again, she fooled us winter weary Midwesterners by throwing some beautiful warm days at us. The robins are out in full force. The grass is starting to turn green and the trees have buds on them. Oh, but hold up! Snow is in the forecast. Because yeah, false spring.

But no matter what the weather, the running goes on. What better distraction from the weather than to runfess? Thank goodness Marcia has opened the runfessional. You know I always have a few things to share.

I runfess... that last month, I bought a new pair of Brooks Cascadias--my trail shoes--but I haven't taken them out of the box! It's been SO muddy this false spring and I don't want to get them dirty. I know, they are trail shoes and trail running is dirty. I've definitely worn out my current pair. I just need to do it.

I poolfess... when my pool Bluetooth headphones ran out of charge right in the middle of my Fluid Running workout., I played the workout on my phone speaker. It's so loud in the pool that no one even noticed. I could barely hear it myself. I did keep the headphones in my ears so no one would bother me while I finished up.

I runfess... the real reason I had the colonoscopy was not that I'm a good patient who wanted to do my recommended screening, but because I was having issues with bleeding during my runs. I knew what it was from and that it was more annoying than worrisome. I'm grateful that he was able to take care of the problem and do my screening. And yes, this is TMI but I'm sharing it because there might be someone reading this who is having a similar issue. Feel free to PM me if you want to learn more.

I runfess... that in April, I'll be running 2 long distance races within one week. Originally, I signed up for the Earth Day Trail 15 miler. A few weeks ago, Holly contacted me to see if I wanted to run the Teardrop half marathon, a race we've tried to do for the past 2 years. The pandemic interfered with our plans both times. I still had credit on Delta airlines, so sure, why not? Except that I didn't realize I was running Earth Day the weekend before!!!

I runfess... that last week, during False Spring, I finished a wonderful trail run in the preserve and returned to my car. Parked next to me was an SUV with a black lab looking out the open window. I stopped to pet him and as I glanced in the car, I smelled weed. When I looked over at the driver, he was staring at me. It gave me the creeps so I got in my car and left. WHY DO I PUT MYSELF IN THESE SITUATIONS?

Yikes...what do you have to runfess? Would you wear the new shoes? Have you ever run back to back long distance races? Do you pet strange dogs? Are you enjoying real spring or have you returned to winter like us?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida.

  1. Yeah I'm not thrilled about the snow in the forecast. Those 60-70 degrees were such a tease. I wouldn't wear new shoes in the mud either. So is the bleeding hemorrhoids?? Yes to the back to back races. A full and a half marathon 6 days apart. And that half is my PR so there's that!

  2. Yes, of course I pet strange dogs -- although not usually in someone else's car. That poor dog!

I have never done back to back distance races but plenty of people have. Good luck!

Thankfully no snow in our forecast (maybe) but teens in the morning next week. But it's par for the course, you can't change it, so you just have to run with it. :)

  3. Our weather is what Judy said. I ignore it and just run and race. What can yo do?

You know I would have jumped at that race. Just take it easy on the first and enjoy the one with Holly. Say HI for me!

Can't wait for your race recaps...

  4. I usually cannot contain myself when the new shoes arrive! You all have had some wacky weather for sure and it more assuredly is not springlike in Chicago. That is fun that you and Holly will be doing another race together. Just consider one a training race!

    2. I cannot believe it has been snowing on and off all the day. I did not pack appropriate clothes

  5. Back to back long races? Yeah, I've done a few of those (marathons sandwiched between halfs, etc.), LOL. Why not? Seize the day (or the race) ;-) We had rain, sleet, AND snow yesterday morning...but I think that's the last of it, fingers crossed. We still have cold temps, and the wind refuses to play nice....

  6. I cannot believe you all are getting snow again! Though I shouldn't be too shocked we had sleet and rain yesterday. I totally feel you on the shoes and would probably wait until it was less muddy. I've never tried back-to-back races, but you'll do great and seeing Holly will be such a good time!

  7. I'm well aware of your weather because my sister lives in the area. I can think back to years growing up where it snowed on Easter! We've been warm and muggy (ugh) but have a tiny cooldown coming this weekend- down to the 50s at night and I can't wait.
That's funny about the shoes. I think I would probably just wear them in the mud, but I can see how that would be hard!
I would totally do the back-to-back races and can't wait to hear all about it!

    1. I'm excited to do the races--it works out well with the trail race first and then the half marathon. My training is a combo of both trail and road. Let's see how it goes!

  8. Not a runner, but walker...but lately I've been a slacker and am trying to force myself to get back into it. It's been so easy to find excuses. But, the numbers on the scales of late tell me I need to try harder. I've also re-started yoga and am doing ok with planks...but I need to do more apparently sitting on the computer and knitting isn't getting the job done. Spotted you on a mutual friends blog and thought I'd pop over for a visit. It's always fun to meet new bloggers. Good luck with your running.

  9. Oh, those two long distance races within a week look daunting. But you can do this, Wendy!
The first one is long, but it's a trail race, so I would take that one easy and just enjoy it.

If the half-marathon is a road race I would focus on that one and race it.

Yay! We will get treated to two race recaps in quick succession! All the best and looking forward to reading all about them!

  10. Last night when I heard a “wintry mix” in the forecast, I thought I was watching a recorded show. It’s supposed to be 26 here Sunday night!

I know your reluctance to wear your new trail shoes makes no sense, but I get it! You know you have to rip that band-aid off and let them get dirty.

    Glad your colonoscopy was clear!

  11. I have just bought some new road shoes and they are sadly PINK so I need to get them muddy! And well done on getting the issues sorted. I had some bleeding after long runs when I had my ovarian cyst, I think it was that as it didn't happen after I'd had it removed, though I also had endometriosis and adhesions sorted, too. Happy TMI day!
