5 Things I'd Tell You Over Coffee

Let's sit down over a cup of coffee and catch up! How do you like yours? I'll take some half and half in mine. So tell me what's new with you? I've got a few things to share...

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I am so glad to see January come to an end. It wasn't a bad month for me, it's just so darned long and cold. Speaking of cold, have you been hit with the flu or any of the other creeping crud going around? I've been busy at work--I'm seeing a lot of sick kids with flu and complications. And some not so sick kids with very anxious parents. The media does a good job of focusing on the drama and scaring the heck out of people, don't they? They are reporting that this flu season is going to last until May...I sure hope not!

If we were having coffee, we'd have to talk about the weather. I mean, come on man! It has been so cold. And then so warm! And now so cold again! The one thing we haven't had much of is snow. I'm not a huge fan of winter, but I do love me a good snow storm. I haven't even pulled out my YakTrax, not to mention my XC skis. We are supposed to get snow this weekend, but not all at once. Maybe we'll get 6 inches in total over 4 days.

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I need want this t-shirt:

Anthropologie
My friend, Paria sent me the link yesterday. Today she sent me a 20% coupon. Do I pull the trigger?

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you how excited I am for my quick getaway next weekend to Birmingham Alabama to run the Mercedes Half Marathon with my friend and Weekly Wrap co-host,  Holly. I found a non-stop round-trip flight for a decent price and booked it right away. There was a catch, though. With this new "basic economy" fare, United charges $25 to carry on a bag. They also charge $25 to check a bag. What they do allow is a small 9x10x17 bag. Good thing I'm only going for one night.

If we were having coffee, I'd ask you if you were doing anything special for the Super Bowl. Are you? Not to offend any Patriots or Eagles fans, but I really don't care much about either team. The hype and the drama are kind of a buzz kill for me. But I do want to see Justin Timberlake's halftime show. That man can dance! I'm not a huge pop music fan, but I can always appreciate creative artistry. His new song Filthy is funky and fun--and the video is something else. It will be interesting to see if he brings the robot to the stage. We'll just have chili and hang out at home, which is fine with me.

What would you tell me over coffee? What is new with you? Have you gotten sick this winter? Are you on a weather roller coaster too? Should I buy the t-shirt? Air travel--fun or chore? Who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl? Filthy--thumbs up or down?

I'm linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday 5 and Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date! Have a great weekend!

  1. My take on the Superbowl? I'm rooting for the Eagles, only because I always liked them as a kid because I thought their uniforms were pretty. Truth! (I am an art geek, don't forget). Knock on wood, I have stayed healthy this winter which is quite amazing considering all the crazy cold weather I was running in during my streak. The weather roller coaster has been nuts.

    1. You know you don't get sick from the cold, right? :p If anything, I think being out in the cold toughens people up. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

  2. I'm rooting for the halftime show. And the ads. Couldn't care less about the game. How can you not get that shirt?!? It's a must!

  3. That shirt is perfect for you, but even with the 20% off is it reasonably priced? I am excited for the Superbowl. Go Eagles! I probably wont watch a lot of the game but I do like the commercials and all that snacks that come along with game night.

    1. I think a lot of people are rooting for the Eagles. Everyone loves an underdog!

  4. I have never gotten the flu shot. Normally it doesn't bother me but it seems like this has been an especially bad year for it. I'm washing my hands constantly and trying to avoid sick people!

I hope that you have an awesome time in Alabama with Holly next weekend - I can't wait to follow your adventures on Instagram!

    1. I get the flu shot every year. Even if we weren't required to get it, I would. I saw a ton of patients with the flu this week.

  5. OMG you have to get the shirt!! I personally couldn't wait for January to end! My hubs is from Philly and he and my son are going to the game. Huge fans over here! Thanks for joining for coffee!

  6. You definitely need to get that shirt -- now! I have a United branded VISA so I always get a free bag, but I still try to just travel with a carry on. On Frontier, I pay for all the extras so it's no longer a bargain flight but the experience doesn't suck. ;-)

  7. Absolutely buy the shirt. :)

Not a football fan. My husband's team didn't make it, so as usual, I won't be watching, although he'll probably watch a little.

My husband came home with some coughing crud again yesterday. The second time in two months. Hoping I miss that one the same way I missed the first one. While I didn't feel good for a lot of January, it was just a case of feeling meh, not really sick. The news definitely makes it sound like we're in a pandemic. Which is scary.

    1. I am seeing a ton of flu in my clinic. More than the usual winter, that's for sure!

  8. I am glad Jan is over but im not looking forward to the nasty weather Feb. usually brings were I am. I have nothing special planned for the Super Bowl. Just me, a bag of chips, and my dogs, mostly watching for the commercials. LOL

  9. I've been the crazy hand sanitizer, hand washing person when I leave the house. I really don't want to get sick and you're right the news has scared me!
I'm kind of neutral about the Super Bowl too- but I am excited about the food and Justin. :-)
I'm happy it's a new month too-- can't wait for spring. Hope you had a nice week.

  10. I'm going to a super bowl party but haven't watched one second of football this season - yes I'm one of those!!

  11. How can you not get that shirt?! I'm a huge Pats fan so yes I'm all about the game, but I do like JT so the halftime show should be a good one.

    1. The halftime shows have been fantastic the last couple of years. Should be good!

  12. I'd just layer on as many clothes as possible for the flight - paying a baggage fee for an overnight trip? Heck no. Now, paying for that shirt (with the coupon, natch) - heck yes!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am so over all the layers and trying to avoid the ice.

So FOMO on not seeing Holly and running a half. You two will have a blast and it won't be cold.

But if you want to take a drive. I have an empty bed for a half marathon on March 17 in Vero Beach.

Not interested in the Super Bowl but I will watch the half time show, for sure.

    1. So tempting--that half. But it's just a long weekend for me, so I probably won't be able to swing it.

  14. Les had bronchitis, but I've been illness free (so far.) We've been in the 80s here in So Cal this week. I went for a trail run yesterday and finally had a little kick in my run.

Les was born in Minnesota, so it was a bitter pill when they lost a couple weeks ago. Not pulling for either team, just hope it's an interesting game.

Air travel... oh boy! It's such a huge part of our life. Luckily we own a car that stays in Hawaii and we only travel with carry-on luggage when we go there. It's crazy how much the airlines charge for every thing.

    1. I'd love to have a place to travel to and not have to haul so much stuff when I go!

  15. The flu is so awful this year! That's terrible it might last through May! ... Um, yes you definitely NEED that shirt! ... And that SNL travel gif is EVERYTHING! HAHA!

  16. I started as a 49ers fan, then a Patriots fan when I moved to Boston. Now I just don't care and don't watch football. I'll get a pizza for dinner to kind of be in the theme, but I'll find something else to watch.

    ReplyDelete

    1. We root for the Bears but they are always awful and it gets old. My youngest son is a Packers fan and they are a lot more fun to watch. I know it's wrong--they're such rivals but I like having a foot in both camps.

  17. You should definitely get the shirt :) I haven't really been into the super bowl either. But I'm excited for game day food!

  18. YES get the shirt!!!

Let me ask you about the flu, actually... my daughter didn't get the flu shot. She's 4.5 yo. I made an appointment for her to get it next week but since the shot is only 10% effective this year, is it worth risking taking her to the doc with other sick kids?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'd still get the flu shot. We've got a lot of flu left. The effectiveness is higher, about 30%. I know that's not great odds but it's better than 0. The kids I"m seeing who got the flu shot but have the flu are definitely not as sick as the ones who didn't. Keep in mind it takes 2 weeks for the full effectiveness.

  19. I have never been into the Superbowl - I couldn't even tell you who's playing (like, I'll read it and forget) and am probably going skiing that day. Can you send some of that cold to the PNW? Even the ski resorts have been warm! I don't want it to be painfully, bitterly cold, but some temperatures in the 20s would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know you have had that gray rainy weather--I do prefer colder sunny weather to the gray warmer temps. But this bitter stuff is hard on everyone.

  20. January dragged on forever! And I've been lucky enough to be sick twice this month. I feel like everyone around me at work is sick, so it was inevitable! I totally think you should get that shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  21. We haven't had the flu here, but we have ALL been sick with colds. It seems to just go from my son, to me, to my hubby, and then starts all over again in this vicious cycle. We're finally all healthy right now - knock on wood it stays that way, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm looking forward to seeing you next weekend! I usually watch the Super Bowl to see the ads, but now they've gotten to where they preview those. That just spoils the fun.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was thinking the same thing as I was watching the ads all week. Booo!

So besides my fear of getting sick this week, we are supposed to get snow next Friday! Divine intervention anyone?

  23. I'm with you on this weather. So done with it. I don't like these new 'bargain fares' on the airlines--always nickel and diming. I'd say nix the t-shirt for the price. That's insane. Can't wait to hear all about your half next weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ugh, United. I've packed for a week in a "personal item" size bag before. I wouldn't recommend that, but it's definitely not bad for one night, even with all the running gear.

We'll probably go hiking on superbowl Sunday if it's not rainy and gross...great way to have the trails all to yourself ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. You must buy the shirt! Rationalize it with the money you are saving on not checking a bag :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. January definitely felt like a super long month, and the flu has been so bad this year--I've been trying super hard not to get sick! :[ I hope you have an awesome time at the half marathon next weekend! :]

I'm going to be working on Sunday, but I'm low-key rooting for the Eagles just because I have a friend who takes care of their athletes and another who's one of their cheerleaders, hehe.

    1. Plus, it would be fun to see the underdog win, right?

  27. Yes... you pull the trigger and buy the shirt... I may not comment on your blog much anymore but I still read it.... if we were having coffee, I’d tell you about all the teen drama that has hijacked my life.... this too shall pass

    1. Oh, you know I've been there. You just have to hang on for the ride--it's a bumpy one--and hope that you lead them in the right direction. Even though it seems that the worst is over here, it's still a work in progress. You know I'm here for you.

  28. There was a study that came out recently that taking a probiotic containing lactobacillus G can have protective effects against the flu. It might be worth your while to start taking it. Gut health, you know...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm pretty lukewarm about the teams in the Super Bowl... but I'll be pulling for the Eagles. I haven't gotten sick this year (knock on wood), but I've been surrounded by people who have - I think it's my running and obsessive hand washing that's keeping me healthy.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I joke that I have OCD about hand washing but it's more a phobia of getting sick!

It’s been whacky weather here in Houston!! 70 one day and 40 the next!
I have mixed feelings about the Super Bowl.
I do enjoy football, but Super Bowl is the weekend with the most sex trafficking of the year in the US. :(

  33. Omg, you soooo need that shirt!!! That's awesome! I'm telling you, if I weren't still recovering from my marathon ...I'd so drive to Birmingham and run that race with y'all!!!! Heck, I'm still tempted .....

    ReplyDelete
  34. I also love that shirt! Good luck on your half marathon!

  35. I agree, January felt long to me as well. Thankfully, no flu here, and the meda sure does do a good job at scaring folks!
Those economy airfares make me unsure about if they are a good deal. I guess if you only have a carry-on, it's not so bad. But, I tend to overpack so I usually have two bags. LOL!
And, no Super Bowl interest here. Maybe the puppy or kitty bowl fun stuff though. :)

  36. Please tell me that you got that shirt. It was made for you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope you pull the trigger and get that shirt. It's like it was made for you!

Justin Timberlake is the only part of the superbowl I'm interested in seeing. I think I'm even over the hype for the commercials. I'll wait until tomorrow when I can selectively watch the ones that seem to have risen to the top :)

I'm not an Eagles fan, but I'm definitely rooting for them...the city would go NUTS if they lose! Plus, I hate Tom Brady lol. I have a love/hate thing with JT so I'm going to cautiously watch the halftime show...I don't know what to expect!

Knock on wood, I've been able to stay healthy so far this winter...hoping to keep it going and avoid the flu!

    1. I hope no more people get the flu! It's been ridiculous this winter!

  41. You definitely NEED that shirt! I hope you ordered it!

Superbowl - nope! Didn't care when I was in the States and not interested now. I've never been a football fan really. I know some Americans here who search out bars that actually broadcast the Super Bowl here (usually in Amsterdam - I'm on the other side of the country) - I can see that for the Olympics (where I do cheer for American and Dutch athletes) but not for football, nope.

Air travel - yes! but it is getting more and more difficult to get the real fare advertised. Now with Ryanair you can only bring a overhead locker bag if you've paid for Priority. Which costs extra :) But still I do find it a fun challenge at times to get a good deal.

No sickness here but done with the cold. And it's not even REALLY cold here...
