Runfessions: December

It's the last Friday of December which means it's time once again to runfess! Do you have anything to runfess? Or was your month uneventful and full of joy?

You guys know me well enough by now to expect plenty of runfessions. Good or bad, my life is never dull. It would be boring any other way!

So what do I have to 'fess?

It's December, it's cold, and all I want to do when I'm done with my run is get inside and warm up...until I can't. Yep, I was locked out of the house after a run. Normally I enter the house through the garage door. But the door wouldn't open when I entered the code. I called my husband and he told me I should carry a key. Thank you, Mr Obvious. But what's the point of having a keypad to open the door? What's a cold, sweaty runner to do? I runfess I did what any running mom would have done--I called the high school and asked them to send my son home to let me in.

I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here, but I runfess that I overdid it with sweet treats this month. I really felt it too, with weird dreams, anxiety, hot flashes, and sluggish heavy legs that didn't want to go. My weirdest dream was about running a race with Amy C from Running Escapades. Maybe I've been reading too many blogs...

While it's time to re-apply for all the ambassadorships, I runfess that I am letting go of my Tailwind ambassadorship. I just don't feel that I'm giving them what they deserve. I haven't run a marathon since Big Sur in 2016. I have so much Tailwind that I'll never use it all before it expires. I'll miss being part of the Tailwind family. Tailwind is an amazing company and they treat their ambassadors so well! I will continue to use and promote Tailwind, but it's time to let someone more worthy step in.

You may have noticed a new header on the blog. I felt it was time to freshen things up. While I was working on it, I decided to download a graphic from the internet. I runfess that along with the graphic, I also downloaded malware to my brand new MacBook. Doh! It was bad. The program took over my browser and it wasn't pretty. I spent the good part of yesterday morning uninstalling all the footprints this malware left on my computer. Can I say Doh! again? And no, the header isn't at all from that malware. Lesson learned.

Since it's the end of 2017, I should be making goals for 2018. Everyone is posting their goals. But I runfess that I have no goals for 2018 except to keep on running. I've decided to just roll with it this upcoming year. I started 2017 so optimistic. I was going to run a marathon! I had that secret goal of BQing! Yeah, right. Instead, I DNS'd a marathon and a half marathon and DNF'd a 10k. Running with RA presented a huge learning curve and an attitude adjustment. Letting go of goals feels kind of good!

What do you have to runfess? Have you ever locked yourself out of the house? Weird dreams? Ambassadorships--yay or nay? Have you ever downloaded malware to your computer? Are you making goals for 2018?

I'm linking up with Marcia for the final Runfessions of 2017! And with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the final Friday 5.0 of 2017!

  1. I have locked myself out of the house as well. I had to pop the screen out of the window to get in. I was about to do that pretty easily, which kind of made me wonder.....haha. I have no goals for 2018 either. I am just going to go with the flow I guess.

    1. I asked my husband if there was a window I could break...um no.

  2. I noticed the new header immediately, it looks great!!! Knock on wood...no malware for me, but we all know how tech savvy I am (NOT!). SOmething evil is probably just waiting around the corner to pounce on my unassuming tech world. I don't really have any specific 2018 goals either. WHEW, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do better with monthly goals.

    1. Funny you should mention that, because for some reason your comments keep going to spam! Now that I know, I look for them there.

  3. Malware is the worst! Such a pain. My sympathies.

The batteries can die on those keypad locks. Lucky for me, we have 2 of them so you can almost always get in! I have, in fact, locked myself out of the house. Without a cell phone. And there was the time the door on my parents house slammed shut from wind, and I didn't take keys cause I was just going to get the newspaper (so my dad wouldn't do it). At first my mom didn't get the door cause she figured *I* would do it!

No, I really didn't indulge too much. But I haven't been able to exercise anywhere near as much as I'd like, and that isn't helping!

I do like goals, and I'll work hard to achieve them, but OTOH I actually don't put a lot of pressure about the finish time while racing. I go by pace -- that sort of takes the pressure off, especially since I'm not a math wizard & generally don't know what those paces add up to!

Here's hoping 2018 is a much kinder year to you, Wendy!

  4. I have locked myself out of the house because I took the wrong set of keys. Luckily my sister was home and she opened the door for me. I have a few races in mind for next year. Most of them are RnR races and I am hoping I get picked through BibRave for the ones I am interested.

    1. I'm just going to take 2018 as it comes. At least with a half, I don't need a ton of time to train.

    2. Exactly! Hope to run with you next year!

  5. I need to use the key the lock the door behind me, so I know I have it with me when I run. But when I leave for work Im always nervous that I will think my keys are in my bag (now that I have a car with a self starter) but they won't be and Ill end up locked out of the house and the car.

    1. I have that same fear! I have done that (locked my keys in the car while it's running) so it isn't beyond possibility!

  6. I love the new header! I totally would have done the same thing having my son come home to let me in. We do have a key hidden somewhere out in our yard but I don't remember where. :) I am sticking with skirt sports but giving up my Balega ambassadorship this year. I don't agree that you are not worthy of the tailwind amb. you are pretty inspiring on a regular basis!

    1. Aww, thank you! But I just don't stand up next to those long distance ultra marathoners. I'm ok with it. It's been a good ride!

  7. Ugh on the malware but I LOVE your new header. I got malware that completely shut down my work laptop. Luckily it happened while I was taking a "staycation" so I could get our IT folks to wipe and restore it before I had to get any real work done. I'm struggling with goals for 2018. I need something to look forward to though. Hopefully a trip to Chicago with time to see you?

  8. I runfess that I also overdid it with food this month, but I'm okay with that because I'm going to get back on track next week!
I disagree with you about Tailwind - they are and would be lucky yo have you. I think you do a great job representing the brand and you're the person that introduced me to them!
Oh, I'd be more than happy to buy your Tailwind from you if you need to unload it before it expires!

  9. No goals work for me. No pressure. Just enjoy the runs and races. If they go well, so much the better.

I wish people would stop bringing their extra Christmas cookies to work...cuz I have no willpower.

I love my skirtsports ambassadorship because it pays for my skirts (and I love them.) Same with Rock N Blog. I only wish I could run more races.

Hope you have a great 2018...and that I get to run with you.

  10. I have been locked out of my house but never in the freezing cold. Plus, I can climb the fence and sneak in through the doggy door. Not my favorite way of entry, since my dogs try to "help" me through.

  11. I don't set goals for the new year because I know things will change. I learned with my ITBS to go with the flow and do what I can do, and no pressure. The Bay to Breakers is longer than my favorite 10k distance, but I can test my limits in training.

  12. Boo to the malware. That really sucks :( I've definitely been overindulging the last couple weeks too. I've got to get it under control since I'm tapering but still eating like I'm not. Here's to a great 2018!

  13. Only one big goal race for 2018, Paris marathon on April 8th. After that the plan is to keep running, but also to focus on learning golf. So, no major expectations, we will see where the year goes. Happy New Year Wendy.

  14. I've been locked out of the house... the hubs was home and he was napping and I couldn't get him to wake up! Had to call the dog sitter to let me in. I haven't set any goals for 2018 or made any real race plans... maybe I'll do 2018 flying by the seat of my pants!

  15. I like your new header a lot - sorry about the malware...what a nightmare to deal with!

Personally I think you're exactly the kind of ambassador Tailwind should have - you inspire me daily!

Wishing you a very happy 2018 and hopefully we'll meet up!

  16. I lock myself out of each of our abodes at least once AS I turn around trying to open the door (having realized that I don't have my key). Spare keys are everything.

  17. Your new header looks AMAZING! I love it. I'm in limbo between MacBooks. My old one is a 17" pro and has all the bells and whistles. But it's old. Like, ancient. The new one is a 15". It's faster, has more memory, and isn't about to die all the time. But the screen is tiny and I can't put my CS on there or my Office suite since there's no disc drive. I might as well have malware on it at this rate since I don't even want to use it!

    1. That's how I feel about this new MacBook. I had to trash a ton of files (which I didn't need anyways) and I left off all my iTunes music. I don't use it anymore, but still. I'm getting used to the new computer. Do I love it? That remains to be seen.

  19. So frustrating about the malware AND getting locked out! However, your new header looks great and I hope you enjoy the last couple of days of 2017 before settling into the new year!

  20. I love your new header! Very fresh looking. Our garage door keypad has been barely functioning for the past 6 months and it absolutely stinks. We keep a key hidden in our backyard because it's become such a problem. And...my home business e-mail was compromised this morning. What a freaking nightmare.

  21. Haha! I had a friend who lived in a rural area with no immediate neighbors ...she went outside to get something from her car in only her bra and panties and yep, you guessed it ..locked herself out of her house! She had to walk to a neighbors house in her underwear to make a phone call to her husband who had already left for work!

I love you new blog header and so glad you got that malware cleaned off of your new computer ...yikes!! Happy New Year Wendy!

  22. I overdid the sweets too. I think that it's alright not to have goals defined yet - just let them come. Happy New Year!

  23. Years ago, my key fell out of my pocket on my run. My husband was sleeping and I think my phone had died. I ended up throwing small rocks at our apartment's bedroom window and then we walked my running route backwards to find the lost key. What a morning! Ugh!

Love the new header! I noticed it right away. :) Sucks about the malware, though. Booo.

I am making a couple goals for the new year but keeping it a bit tame compared to recent years.

  24. Sweets this time of year are so much more delicious than any other time of the year!! we have to indulge!! I surprised myself and ate 3 tamales and ran 5 miles the next day, I thought It would be impossible to run, but I didn't do too bad.

  25. A couple I knew were house sitting for a friend who had a hot tub and said they could use it. They were enjoying the hot water when they realized that they had locked themselves out of the house. Naked. In Fairbanks, Alaska. In the winter! They had to drive themselves home wearing towels.

  26. My boyfriend used to always lock himself out of the house. It makes me so nervous now that I check my pockets 8x for my keys before leaving, lol.

  28. Haha, I would have been so mad if I got back from a run and had locked myself out! I'm always triple checking for my key these days out of fear it'll happen.

  29. I'm always super paranoid the garage code will not work! Growing up, I got locked out on a few occasions. The closest window on the back porch was 10 feet up so I had to stack 2 picnic table benches on top of each other to get up there then pull myself up through the window once I clawed off the screen. It was quite an ordeal.

  32. Oh man. Your husband and my husband could be twins. I was at the hairdresser's a few weeks ago and they changed their payment policy to where they only take cash or check. I didn't have a debit card on me and no checkbook and when I called him to come bring me some money he was all "well, you should always carry a check..." sheesh. I hope 2018 brings good things to you!

LOL on calling your son home from school to let you in the house. I'm always nervous that the battery will die on my garage keypad while I'm out on a run. We also have a keypad on one of our back doors so hopefully that would serve as a backup. It would be my luck that that battery would die at the same time.
