Weekly Wrap: Here I Go Again

Disclaimer: I received a pair of Rockay Accelerate Socks in exchange for my unbiased review.

After my fun long weekend in Nashville, it was right back to reality. I always feel that after a vacation, I need a vacation to recover. My sister and I did pack a lot in those few days we were away and I was exhausted at the beginning of the week. But with a half marathon coming up in 4 weeks, I needed to get some miles in.

Running
I worked early on Monday and I just couldn't drag myself out of bed for a zero dark thirty run. But when I got home from work in the afternoon, the beautiful weather was too good to pass up. I went for a very rare afternoon run. The conditions were perfect and I enjoyed my 4 miles around my neighborhood. I don't know if this happens to you, but when I run in the afternoon, I run faster than in the morning. I can't explain it.

What a picture perfect afternoon!
On Wednesday morning, I set out to do 6 miles on the bike path. My legs felt really good, the conditions were favorable, and as I did last week, I decided to push my miles to 8, taking the long way home as I so often do. Of course, by the time I got back, it was way later than I had planned and I had to hustle to get myself to work. Don't you hate when you have to cut a run short for work?

When my alarm went off Saturday morning, I struggled with motivation. My husband came in from taking the dog out and commented on how nice it was outside. Ok, fine. I headed out into the dawn and ran a beautiful 3 miles before going to work. I sure needed it, because that morning at work, I was bitten by a patient. Working in healthcare is never dull.

I planned to run 10 on Sunday, but a poor night's sleep and an upset stomach made me reconsider. The conditions weren't favorable either, with wind and rain, but once the rain stopped, I decided to give it a go. The weather for my November half probably won't be any better. I did an out and back on the bike path, pushing forward against some pretty strong wind gusts. The reward was on the way back with that tailwind pushing me home. As always, I'm so glad I went.

The path was paved with leaves. I love that!
CrossFit
Since we were out of town last week, I missed last Thursday's session and it was good to be back. Sammy Jo started me off with deadlifts. She didn't go easy on me and had me do 3 sets of 5 deadlifts, 150#. I was sweating and my heart was pounding. Who says strength training isn't cardio? I also did good mornings using a giant resistance band around my shoulders and feet. She threw in some hip work, core work, and handstand holds against the wall.

The day's bootcamp workout written on the board, it looked so simple: 10 rounds x 3 minutes each: 15 cal row, 8 v-ups, 8 balls over shoulder, and 8 pullups/jumping pull-ups. After the first round, I ended up having to modify a bit so I could get it all done in the 3 minute time frame allotted for each set. I should know by now that bootcamp is never simple. Oh, and by the way, the DOMS were real and they were spectacular. It must have been those jumping pull-ups. Ouch.

Off the road
This week, I completely slacked in the yoga department, which might explain the extreme DOMS I experienced this week. Oops. I'll be rolling out the mat in the upcoming week. Multiple times.

I did need some grounding before work on Saturday.
Even one yoga pose is better than none, right?
In other news, I am excited to share that I was featured as the member of the month on the Healthy Living Community blog. Not familiar with HLC? Check out the post and ask to join! It's another great way to share your content with like-minded people!

ROCKAY Accelerate Socks
You all know I have a sock obsession. I can't be loyal to just one brand, although I've tried. I've been trying all kinds of socks lately. Rockay sent me a pair of Accelerate Socks to try and it was love at first wear.  The first thing I noticed was how comfortable they were. The socks are woven with merino wool which is great for wicking away sweat. My feet were warm but not hot. There is a compression panel around the arch and gave my plantar fascia some much needed love. The heel tab keeps the socks from slipping down the ankle. The socks I received were black with lime green around the arch. I just liked everything about the Rockay Accelerate Socks and would definitely recommend them. Rockay has a lifetime guarantee and will replace any socks that tear or lose basic functionality. Rockay socks are eco-friendly and are made from plastic retrieved from the ocean. These are socks you can definitely feel good about wearing!

Please excuse the Cocoa fur on the soles...lol

    1. I was pretty shocked to be picked since I'm not a very active member. Looks like I need to remedy that!

  2. I always feel like I need a vacation after a vacation! I'm embarrassed to admit how long it's ben since I did any yoga. I planned to do some this week but ended up running extra instead. Congrats on being selected as the member of the month!

  4. I have not tried any of the inkburn yet but I cannot pass up a good sale! I wonder if I would be faster in the afternoon? Good god I cannot be any slower lol. Maybe your muscles are warmed up from walking around for a few hours?

  5. When I try to run in the afternoon I feel like my feet are made of concrete and that I'm trying to run through molasses. I'm glad you had such a good running week!

    1. Well, my afternoon and your afternoon probably varies by about 50 degrees! LOL

  6. I was lucky to get in 2 yoga classes around my race (part of the retreat). But usually I'm fairly good with getting in SOME yoga before a race, but it was fun to do it with a class, which I don't do often.

Sometimes I run faster in the afternoon. Sometimes I don't. I've been kind of dragging lately. But I always do run faster in a race!

    The socks sound really interesting.

  7. The fall colors are so pretty there! I usually surprise myself with my afternoon paces too. I assume it's because I'm more awake than when I stumble out of the bed for a morning run? Congrats on be featured on Healthy Living Community! I looked at the InknBurn merchandise but sadly nothing in my size.

  8. I may start running in the mornings since I start and end later now at my new job. I like afternoon runs since I don't have to cut the runs short. I'm the type who likes to stay in bed as late as I can before my alarm.

  9. Loving your brightly coloured long-sleeve tops and those socks look excellent, will check whether they're available here.

I don't like running in the afternoon and very rarely do it. I never feel my lunch has settled properly! But we're all different!

    1. I'm the same as you--so not an afternoon runner. But once in awhile it's just the thing!

  10. I love your fall running pictures! Your cross-fit workouts sound so challenging. I know that's what makes them effective though. We are learning the Scooby likes to eat socks, which I know can be dangerous. I hope he didn't eat the three I can't find matches to after doing laundry today ....

    1. I'd be so sad if Cocoa ate my socks. Instead, she likes to eat my chocolate wrappers. I find that odd...

    Hope your stomach has settled
Ink N Burn always fascinates me, price may finally be right. Off to check out that & Zooma challenge. o

    1. Yeah, the bite was a first in my long nursing career. It upset me more than I thought it should.

  12. Do you think you will become an afternoon runner more often? I love my afternoon runs and wanted to go out every day this week because it has been THAT nice but I've really been working on using my time more wisely so I've been limiting myself ( I know that probably sounds silly).

I'm hoping you put your fingers in the patients mouth and that's how you got bit and it wasn't another way! ouch! -M

    1. I don't think I'll be an afternoon runner except out of necessity. For me there is nothing better than starting off the day with a run.

No, my fingers were nowhere near that child's mouth. Sadly.

  13. When I run in the afternoon, I always feel like I'm a snail for the first few miles and then something magically happens. And cutting runs short for work is the story of my life! Sorry you got bit...that's no fun. Although I admit I'd like to kick some of my patients and they are adults. ;)

    1. I can only blame the mother of the child. That's all I'm going to say.

i need to stop stopping on my runs so I can get more in! LOL!

  14. It looks like your fall leaf color is quite a bit ahead of ours (just like it was in SWVA). We got home today to some more color than when we left and I'm hoping that things pop this week!

I not a fan of afternoon runs and find that I'm slower then. This week just might bring on one or two...

    Thanks for the linkup!

  15. So happy to hear about your great runs - the cool weather is so nice, isn't it?

I almost never run in the afternoon; I'm definitely a vampire runner, LOL.

Those socks are cute - I love the splash of lime green on them, too! Never heard of that brand, so they did good in sending you a pair to review. :)

  19. I'm sorry to hear you got bit - that's just crazy! The weather is so nice right now that I really wish I could run - even on the windy days. I usually feel slower on an afternoon run, but I do prefer to strength train in the afternoon.

  20. Hooray for a good running week! Our weather was mostly amazing for it. Yikes! Getting bit is so not okay. My shoulders have been feeling beat up lately and finally Coach Lucifer said no more "muscle hypertrophy". Alrighty then. :p

  25. I always need a few more days post vacation! It's so hard to get back into the routine! I like when I can run in the afternoon because its not very often that happens in Florida. Usually its too hot. But the few days I've been able to, yes, usually I'm faster than in the morning. Maybe its because our legs are warmed up from working or whatever daily activities we get up to during the day?
