'SUP!

Greetings from the north woods of Wisconsin! I'm up in Door County for a long weekend, taking a quick blogging break from all the activity to recap the week. It's really amazing how busy we are in the summer, isn't it? Maybe that's why winter is so long--it gives us time to rest up!

Anyhoo, it's been a full week with not a ton of running but lots of other activities. I also took advantage of Amazon Prime Day and bought myself an inflatable SUP. Over the weekend, I gave it a full workout. Spoiler alert: it was a great purchase!

Week in review:
Sunday: run 6 miles, Country Thunder
Monday: rest day
Tuesday: rest day
Wednesday: run 8 miles, Yoga with Adriene
Thursday: SUP
Friday: Run 3 miles, SUP
Saturday: SUP

The temperatures cooled off and I was able to enjoy some longer runs! We received a lot of rain over the weekend and on Sunday when I ran the bike path, the tunnel was flooded. That was a good place to turn around and I ran home for a total of 6 miles. Wednesday was absolutely gorgeous and I set out once again on the bike path, with a goal of 6 miles. I decided to push on to 8 miles because 1) I stopped to walk quite a bit during mile 3 and 2) it was gorgeous. Miles 7 and 8 were tough, but I finished with my first 8 miler in a while.

Puddle jumping on Sunday's run
We were in Door County on Friday and I set out to run 4-5 miles. Between the humidity and a minor stomach bug I dealt with all weekend, I barely was able to run 3 miles. I did not feel at all well when I finished. Heat and humidity do not agree with me. Sorry.

But there's always the view...
The highlight of my week was the aforementioned SUP. I was hesitant to purchase an inflatable SUP but I learned that once fully inflated, you can barely tell the difference between that and a traditional fiberglass SUP. The inflatable Serene Life SUP that I bought is somewhat lighter and I could feel a bit of a bounce on the water when I first started out. After a couple of rides, I got used to it and spent quite a bit of time paddling around the bay. It glides so easily across the water! My son and his girlfriend also like the SUP. I like the convenience of being able to transport it easily once it's deflated. It only took us 5 minutes to inflate and I were ready to roll.

Playing in forearm stand....means you're going to get wet!
The inflatable board makes for a softer landing.
I can't wrap up my week without sharing my experience at Country Thunder. When I found out that the amazingly talented Chris Stapleton would be playing CT, I really wanted to go see him. My husband did not want to go. My son's girlfriend invited me to go with her and my son and to my surprise, my oldest son wanted to go too. As the date approached, I started to have second thoughts. Would I be too old? Was it weird that I was going with my boys? Was it going to be the drunkfest I had heard rumors about?

No, no, and no. My oldest and I drove up to Twin Lakes, Wisconsin together and once we plodded through the muddy field aka parking lot, we settled ourselves down at the "Lake Stage" to listen to some up and coming acts. It kind of reminded me of the acts I saw in Nashville with my sister last fall. My younger son and his girlfriend arrived a couple of hours later and we hung out together, listening to music until it was time to make our way to the main stage. We moved all the way to the front, behind the VIP section where we had a great view. Chris Stapleton did not disappoint. His voice was smooth, with the country grit; his guitar playing was stellar. His band was top notch. I also enjoyed the evening with my sons and Diana. I am so glad I went!!

Music under the summer sky...what could be better?
Would I go again? Ask me next year...

A busy week of fun in the sun! 'SUP! /via @oldrunningmom #runchat #running #sup #doorcounty

How was your week? Have you ever tried standup paddleboarding? Have you used an inflatable SUP? Would you go to a big music fest to see a performer that you just love?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  5. A blow up SUP is such a great idea, so much easier to travel with! Glad you had so much fun on your mini vacation and FWIW, I'd go to a concert or whatever with my kadults - I figure if they ask, they want me. Really happy to see you enjoying your sons (and Diana!).

  6. Never tried SUP, but I love the idea of it. Hope your stomach is on the mend
Chris Stapleton <3, but probably no on music festivals for me.

  7. An inflatable SUP is a great idea. It looks like you are getting good use out of it already! I jealous of all your time with your boys. I need to be intentional about getting together with my son more often. I'm trying to give him his space but he's usually always up for dinner with us.

    1. I shouldn't complain, but my oldest was supposed to be joining us. He changed his mind at the last minute.

  8. I'm not a huge country music fan, either, but I can tolerate it in small doses LOL That said, the hubby and I are going to see Toby Keith at the Iowa State Fair in a couple weeks...and the youngest daughter (and boyfriend) are going, too. We don't have seats together, but we'll probably be hanging together before hand. I have never tried SUP. I have an anxiety/fear thing (???) with water splashing on my face, and that would be totally unavoidable with me trying to balance on a board.

    1. Oh, now I don't think I'd go see Toby Keith! That's the kind of country I don't like...lol. But you'll have fun. Sorry that you have anxiety about water--guess a triathlon is not in your future!

  10. Looks like a fun week! I bet it was good to change things up and do some SUP while you were away. And at least you had some cooler running weather earlier in the week! Summer really is such a busy time of year.

  11. I often eye the SUP at Costco but who needs that laying around? Glad to hear the inflatable version is a good option. Door County seems like the perfect summer getaway. I have friends who were in Sister Bay this weekend. I've only been there in fall.

  13. What a fun week you had! Wisconsin is so close yet I've been there 3 or 4 times. Heat and humidity don't agree with me either. The worst! I saw your picture on Instagram and was immediately intrigued. Inflatable? I've never tried it but sure looks like fun.

  14. I bought an inflatable SUP too and although there is definitely that "bounce" you mentioned in the water - I love it! I have not tried a headstand so maybe I'll do that when I'm willing to get wet :-) LOVE that you went to the concert with both boys!! SO fun!!!

  17. You know, I've done SUP yoga (in a pool), but I don't think I've ever actually paddled on one? Definitely sounds more pleasant than running in heat and humidity! We have an inflatable kayak, which is harder to fall off of ;)

    1. I've seen those inflatable kayaks--I have a "real" one, but I'd imagine the inflatable ones are similar!

  19. SUP'ing sounds like so much fun. I've never done it though because of my little fear of open water. That's not to say I'd never try it to push myself over that little hump.

I've been to loads of festivals, even for just one band, so definitely yes I would do that! I have to say I do not know the singer you went to see though.

    1. He's really big here--he's performed with Justin Timberlake, Pink, and Bruno Mars, believe it or not. Super talented and has written a lot of songs that you've probably heard of but sung by other people. I personally just love his kind of 'outlaw' brand of country--it reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd and that kind of music.

  20. WOW! What a great time!!! I would love to hear him sing live.
I also am obsessed with your SUP! What a great purchase. I totally want one.

  21. I have never tried SUP - I'd love to try it but I just have a feeling that I'd really suck at it. So an inflatable one would be even more of a struggle for me, I bet!

Great job on the 8 miler! This weekend I made it over 6 miles for the first time in what seems like ages...sometimes it's just nice to go long!

I'm glad you had fun at the concert with your boys! I'm not surprised that you're a cool mom :)

  24. The inflatable SUP board sounds fantastic. Don't think it would work for me, for some reason SUP makes me very nervous. Things that are tippy on the water always do. I don't know why, since I'm a strong swimmer, but sometimes our phobias have no rhyme or reason.

Isn't it amazing how nice it feels to run longer when the weather cooperates? Couldn't it just cooperate more often? Pretty please? Definitely not today, sigh, but Thursday's trail run ought to be nice (and nice & muddy).

That's great that you had such a good time with the young'uns. :)

  25. Never tried an inflatable SUP but I love paddleboarding! That may be the way to go though- we don't have anywhere to store a traditional paddleboard.

I've been to a country music fest before. There were lots of artists and it was really fun! I was a little younger (in my 20s) but I'd go again and maybe just drink less haha.

Running these days is super tough for me as well. The humidity does not agree with me at all.

  27. Congrats on purchasing a SUP! The very first time I tried SUP'ing several years ago it was on an inflatable board. I've since used a regular board, but I do it so infrequently that I don't really remember what the inflatable one was like.
