Runfessions: April

And here we are again, at the end of another month, standing in front of the runfessional. You know about the runfessional, right? At the end of every month, Marcia hosts Runfessions, where runners can runfess their most egregious sins. A sole cleansing opportunity, if you will. It always feels good.

Just like ripping off the bandaid.

Let's go.

I runfess... that in an attempt to create an interesting post-run selfie for IG, I narrowly avoided injury. I was on the trails, climbing over one of the many fallen trees. This was a big tree and I climbed on top, posed for the camera, and instead of climbing down, had the brilliant idea to jump. Yeah, I botched the landing and fell to the ground. You know that moment when you do something stupid and hope no one saw you?

getting too old for this sh**

I runfess... that I spontaneously signed up for a race taking place this weekend. This is a race I've been wanting to do for a while. It's a 20k that runs completely around Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. Last year, it went virtual. You may recall that I ran a portion of the route on my own last summer. The race was still set to be virtual this year, but 2 weeks ago the RD announced that it was ON, baby! I figured that my training for the recent 10 miler I ran had me ready for the distance. Of course, Mother Nature has decided to turn on the heat this weekend. The race starts at 9 and with a predicted high of 82, it's going to be a challenge! But no matter, I could still walk the thing and it would be a PR because...I've never run a 20k before!

I runfess... that I debated updating Google Analytics for my blog. A few weeks ago, I shared that I was considering ending the blog. I'm still here, still blogging, but my ambivalence made me think long and hard about messing with the code again. You know I went ahead with it, right? And inserting the code made some weird changes to my blog but once again, I was able to fix it. Holding my breath the whole time. Yet thinking that if I crashed the blog, my decision would be made for me.

I runfess... that I'm trying to be more mindful, with mixed success. Running trails has certainly helped with that. If I let my mind wander and don't pay attention to the ground underfoot, I almost always catch my toe on a root. A few weeks ago, I was running late for work and when I opened my car door, I caught the corner right in the middle of my forehead. I saw stars and a large bump formed. Fortunately, no one noticed, but it was a good reminder to stay focused.

I runfess... I love how race photos tell a story. My most recent race, the CARA lakefront 10 miler, always has the same photographer and the photos are great. Even when they aren't. I think this one says it all. So.Glad.to be.DONE.

What do you have to runfess? Any last minute race signups? How do you feel about free race photos? Have you ever injured yourself taking a run selfie? Or opening your car door? How do you feel about changing code on your blog?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday:  DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida !

  1. Messing with anything related to code makes me so nervous, so I generally avoid it! I don't think I've hurt myself taking a selfie before, but I definitely get weird looks from people when they notice what I'm doing. Good luck in your race this weekend!

    1. Thanks! I noticed you made some changes to your blog--so I assume you left it to the professionals?

  2. I runfess I haven't changed or updated a single thing on my blog in years. I had an incident with cookies not updating a few years ago that was such a fiasco, I completely stopped messing with anything at all since then. One day soon my blog will implode and that will be the end.

  3. I usually don't update codes myself bc I am afraid of messing them up. I have a service that does most of my updates monthly w my backups. I have become increasingly frustrated w my blog as well. Pouring my heart and soul into it is not helping me grow. Anyway! Have a great time this weekend I am sure you will have a blast. No last minute races here I wish!

  4. Have a great time at your race this weekend. Your finisher's photo from the 10-miler looks like most of my finisher's photos. Who are those people who cross the finish line with big smiles and perfect hair? :)

  5. I don't take runfies so no problem there. I wanted to do some Yoga by the waterfall the other day, but Mr. Judy had to hold Bandit & it would have been too precarious to hold onto him there (although not at all that bad for humans). I runfess later I thought we should have put Bandit in the car . . .

I have bonked my head on cabinets often, not so often a car door (maybe because mine are low to the ground).

82? Yuck! But it's trails, baby, I bet you have a great time. No 80s here, maybe high 60s if we're lucky. And wind, of course!

    1. It’s actually a road race...but should still be a beautiful course.

  6. Just this morning, I was almost back home from my run, and I had the perfect selfie-opp. No traffic, so I set up my phone in the middle of the street, and set the 10-second timer. AS soon as I got into position, with a good eight seconds remaining, a campus security car came around the corner and was headed straight at me LOL He was driving slowly, thankfully. The photo snapped just in time for me to clear out of the way and avoid all eye contact. So yeah, I've done a few risky things all for the sake of a "good" pic LOL

  7. I’m pretty sure I wore the outfit on the right in your 70’s meme, lol.
I hit my thigh on gurneys ALL THE TIME at work, ya think I would know where the end of the gurney is after all these years.

  8. I also have opened the car door and hit my face! I'm sorry that it happened to you, but glad to know I'm not the only one who's done that.
Good luck on your race! Maybe the weather forecast was wrong... you may get lucky.

  9. I know the blog is a lot of work but I love your blog! I have smiled, laughed, nodded in agreement, used your recommendations for a good number of things and learned from you. For example, just this week my husband gave me a gift of the Van Gogh immersion experience here in Philly that you recommended. I use Tailwind for all my long runs, wear a Road ID on my watch daily, used your book and movie/TV recommendations just to name a few. Just know, I love your voice in all things running and life! A big fan. :)

  11. I feel fortunate that my husband dabbles in coding stuff, and has been able to help me with some blog challenges.

Good luck on your race this weekend! It's going to be in the 80s here too and I am excited, but not quite ready for it!

  12. Just the thought of touching the code on my blog makes me break out in a sweat. I've been feeling ambivalent about mine lately - can't remember the last time I updated it.

Good luck with your race! We just got the green light for races to resume here so I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things soon!

  13. Ahh the selfie fail - been there, done that, lol. Luckily no one was around for my mishap as well, but I did get a good laugh out of it.

Good luck at your race this weekend!

  14. I have never tried to take any risks with selfies...I'm such a chicken! Glad you didn't get hurt! I didn't realize you were considering ending the blog, I would miss it so much!

    I hope you have a great 20K!

    1. Thanks! The conditions aren't exactly going to be ideal. So I'm just going to take my time and enjoy the view.

  15. Ack! I am terrified to change code. When I had my blog overhaul, I paid extra to have the designer implement it herself. No thank you on the rest of it.

I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself! I cant even be trusted on my stairs, let alone jumping off a tree trunk!

  16. Girl, if you look pretty in your finish line photo you're doing it wrong!!! The 10k that I run every June just switched from virtual to in person and I am so happy about that. I runfess that the whole reason that I started blogging was so that I would have a website to play with...10 years later I have not done one technical thing with it. Instead I keep taking on side projects like going to grad school, getting married, running, etc so I'm pretty happy with those outcomes vs having a nice blog. And if I ever get bored I could start to try to make something of it...not saying that I ever will, but I could.

  17. OK, stop messing with the code and the blog. You cannot stop blogging. :-) I love free race photos because I will never buy them. Excited to hear how your race went today!
