I Miss Running and other Runfessions

Well, here we are again at the Runfessional. That was fast! It seems like I just posted last month's runfessions. Soon the snow will be flying--ok, I'm getting ahead of myself. Even though I'm not officially running, I do have runfessions this month. Thank goodness Marcia opens the runfessional. I need some absolution and an injection of positivity because, yeah, I runfess that this being unable to run thing is wearing on me.

I runfess... that after 3 months of being sidelined from running due to this broken ankle and foot, I finally MISS RUNNING, dammit. Yes, it took me a while to miss it. But I was busy with so many other things that I didn't have time to miss running. Plus, it was so freaking hot and humid that I wouldn't have wanted to run anyway. Now that fall has officially arrived, the weather is perfect for running, and I'm ready to run. But alas, my leg is not.

Actually 2 bones, but you are right, Ryan

I runfess... that I did try a little running last week and it didn't feel bad. I joked that being a heel striker may be a win for me since I'm not landing on my midfoot where the fracture is located. But it doesn't really matter since I went to the ortho and found out that the x-rays showed not much improvement from the last time I was there. So running is a no-go for now. After I first broke my ankle and foot, he told me to plan on 3-6 months before I'd return to running. Apparently, he was right. Who knew? Maybe everyone should trust their medical providers on health issues...

I runfess... that as much as I have been enjoying my Fluid Running workouts, I had forgotten all about the Pool People. The last time I did pool running, I discovered that there are some odd people at the pool. Remember Green Speedo? Thankfully, there has been no sign of him. This time, I've had the dive well mostly to myself. However, there have been a few times when I've been startled by a large woman entering the pool by doing a cannonball instead of using the steps like everyone else. Another woman, swimming laps, swam right into the space where I was running. I stopped my workout and stared at her as she swam between me and the wall of the pool. She asked me if I was swimming there. My water bottle and phone were sitting on the side of the pool.

I runfess... that since my injury, I have been battling an expanding waistline. It's as if when I stopped running and strength training to accommodate my injury my body was singing "let it go!" It truly seems like it happened overnight. I don't weigh myself so I'm not sure about the poundage, but buttoning my pants is a challenge.

I runfess... that I'm feeling a little FOMO over everyone who is training and tapering for the Chicago marathon. I would feel this way even if I wasn't injured--fall feels like marathon season, am I right? There's just something about these warm fall days that make me nostalgic for my favorite race. Speaking of that, did you hear that Shalane Flanigan is planning to run all 6 marathon majors this fall? Tokyo was just canceled, but that still leaves 5 marathons in less than 2 months time...

Do you get me? What do you have to runfess? Any strange people sightings lately? What do you think about Shalane's goal?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida !

  1. Well, no strange sightings in (or near) a pool...but I seem to be a magnet for football fans who need more than their allotted seat "width" for the games. It's not fun "sharing" almost half of one's designated seat on a hot afternoon for several hours. Lucky for them, it's me they're sitting next to and not the hubby or there would probably be a few rude words exchanged LOL I hope your injuries are healing well! I remember (with precision) what it's like to be sidelined...

    1. Yep, had that experience on my last flight and it was really unpleasant. Lucky for me it was a short flight!

  2. I'm so sorry, it's hard to do the right thing when you're itching to run, isn't it. You will get there, though.

    1. I probably shouldn't be walking either, lol, but I have to move!

  3. I don't think even elite runners should be running that many marathons in that short of time, but good luck to her (she is quite amazing).

I'm so sorry that you have to continue to miss your favorite activity. That's really tough when the Fall weather begins to roll in (it's still back & forth for us, between all the damn RAIN!!!!!!).

  4. I'm so sorry the fall running season has to go on without you. I don't miss the pool people AT. ALL. How does one get so rude? There were so many meanies in that master's swim I used to go to. I suspect Tokyo just threw a big kink in Shalane's plan as well.

    1. Her IG is still saying 6 marathons, so i'm wondering if there's a secret deal...

  5. Yes there are some strange people at the pool. I do remember that from my lap swimming days. Do you see anyone with those old time flowery swim caps? We used to have a few of those! I was out for about 8 weeks not too long ago with labrum tear and not going to lie, it sucks. Bright side, you are feeling much better and you are more than halfway there. I bet you are back by Thanksgiving and just in time for your fabulous Chicago winters. Hang in my friend!

  6. I'm so sorry you're dealing with that not so great news from the doctor.

People in general are wild, pool or otherwise. I can't stand being around them in general.

  7. I hear you loud and clear! I miss running, and I last ran on Tuesday. As I was driving my daughter to school today I was looking longingly at the streets and thinking "Here's where I finish the first mile... here's where I would turn if I were doing a long run..." Yes, I don't like time off.
Looking on the bright side, I'm VERY grateful that I have a pool in my backyard, and your post really brought that home to me. I don't have to deal with any oddballs at a public pool. You should go back and read Shut Up and Run (Beth's) stories from when she did pool running while training for Boston with a femoral stress fracture. She's always amusing!

    1. Beth was my inspiration for years--her post on I Didn't Deserve that Thank you inspired me to come out of the closet aka portapotty and runfess about my GI issues...lol

  8. I am sorry that you cannot enjoy this start of fall with beautiful runs but, believe me, soon it will only be a memory. You will come back to run and race as before. It happened to me.
I also found strange people in the pool: some years ago, when I could swim, a woman wanted to be alone in the lane because she used fins and, of course, was faster. If she found other slower swimmers (with no fins) she hit them. One day I wore the fins too and hit her several times to teach her the lesson.

    1. LOL! I see a lot of people with the fins in the lap pool. Thankfully they are not in the dive pool. I guess I should feel grateful.

  9. What? Three months already, Wendy?! Wow. It felt like only 6 weeks ago when you injured your foot. You're nearly there! Give yourself just a few more weeks, and you will be back!! And you will get to do some fall running in beautifully cool weather.
And then the Pool People will be a distant memory (but there's enough Running People that can be annoying, too, haha!)

  10. so sorry to hear. Eventually this will be a bad memory. I now not soon enough.

Shalane is amazing, so who knows?

  11. I think people in general have just become more rude...

I know not running stinks...especially now that fall has arrived. I continue to keep my fingers crossed for you that your next x-ray will show a big improvement.

While I love Shalane, so many marathons in such a short period of time does sound just a little crazy to me. I hope she can pull it off.

  12. Oh no, sorry you still need to wait a bit more to run! But it will pass fast and then the sky is the limit!

I runfess I am a bit behind with both writing my recaps and with reading all running blogs I usually follow. I need to catch up and find out about the green Speedo incident loool (do I want to know?). I haven't run into abyone weird, just rude.

    1. I couldn't find my reference to Green Speedo and I spent way more time looking for it than I needed to. Let's just say...old, Green Speedo, rude.

  13. After last year's 9-month long break from running due to both my spinal and SI joint injuries, I feel for you and know how hard it is to want to run and not be able to. Hang in there, you'll turn the corner soon!

There was a time when Bill and I ran three marathons in four weeks each fall for a couple of years. Running those particular marathons was so much fun, but probably not the smartest, especially for my long-term running health... I'm sure Shalane will be smarter and take plenty of time off afterward.

    1. It's going to be interesting to see how her knee holds up after all that racing. I love elite runners, but sometimes they do things that aren't so logical.

  14. Oh, I feel you on missing running as soon as the weather changes! I’m grateful to be able to run a few miles and hope my Achilles holds up. LOL on your ortho being right about the time it will take to heal — I guess we don’t believe what we don’t want to believe.

    1. There's an epidemic of skepticism right now! Too bad not everyone does the right thing instead of the feels right thing

  15. That is so funny about that lady swimming in your area. Did she not see you there or realize that someone else was swimming there? I am excited to spectate the marathon. I am also thinking of going to NY to spectate the marathon there too.
