I Didn't Have an Apocalypse on My Summer Running Bingo Card and Other Runfessions

This is a pretty dramatic title, right?

Just when it became safe to go outside without a mask--thank you Covid--people are donning masks again because the air quality is so poor in areas affected by the Canadian wildfires. That includes the Chicago area, where I live. Earlier this week, our air quality was so poor, it was the worst in the world. A few weeks ago, it was the East Coast that was affected. It's almost apocalyptic, viewing the landscape through a smoky haze. And it feels wrong being stuck inside during the best time of year.

Life has not been dull these past couple of years, has it? Thank goodness for running.

Ok. it's time to runfess! On the last Friday of the month, Marcia opens up the runfessional and we are all invited to share our running transgressions. You know I always have a few. Let's get right to it, shall we?

I runfess... that I love nothing more than a good running story and recently I had the opportunity to share one from the past. Cindy Kuzma, a local writer, asked runners to share a running partner break-up story for an article in Runner's World. I shared my story from the past of a neighbor, the father of one of my son's friends, who started waiting for me at the end of his driveway as I ran by. After several weeks of this, I finally had to tell him 'It's not you, it's me' and yes, it was every bit as awkward as you might expect! Here's a link that you can access without the paywall.

I runfess... to feeling burned out on training for my upcoming race in Leadville. Besides being nervous about the race, I'm just so ready for it to be over with. I miss running just for fun. This feeling reminds me of marathon training and it's one of the reasons why I gave up the marathon distance. I love to run. But when running feels like a job and it stresses me out, then it's time to reevaluate my plans. So along those lines, I'm sharing here that after Leadville, I'm not going to make any race plans for the rest of the year. I'll continue to do running events, like the run tours I've done with Erica and fun runs with Brooks and Fleet Feet. I've got the Brooks 'Hype Fest" coming up in August. I am planning to do the Mammoth Challenge in October again, but that's a distance challenge, not a race.

I runfess.... that I'd been struggling to find runfessions for this post, but this week has been the gift that keep on giving. Sometimes that happens, right? I woke up Wednesday morning so grumpy and the smoky skies didn't help. I was hoping to run it off, but the air was smoky and gross. I did have to take my run to the treadmill and I had a surprisingly excellent run, which turned my frown upside down. But I don't want to have to do this again!

This week, I went to the pool on Monday at 830, which is not my usual time at all. I had the pool pretty much to myself, which was great. But I runfess... to being pretty annoyed by music that was playing very loudly. I guess if it had been music I liked, it might not have annoyed me as much. But it was a strange mix of jazz with an occasional pop song like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun thrown in. I could barely hear my workout even though I had my earbuds in.

Also this week, I attended a Brooks/Fleet Feet Pride Run in the city. I'll share more on my Weekly Rundown post on Sunday. But I runfess... that I was a little surprised to watch my IG followers drop after I shared photos from the event. It wasn't a large amount, but it was noticeable. I wish they'd take the crypto folks, spammers, and 'military captains' with them.

What do you have to runfess? Are you affected by the poor air quality? Or are you team high heat warning? Have you ever had to break up with a running partner? Have you experienced burnout when training for a goal race? Do you unfollow people on social media when they post something you don't like?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelle, JennRenee, and Zenaida.

  1. I think feeling burned out training for a big race is pretty common, right? It's hard work after all!

Oh, the East Coast has the smoke, too, now -- although not quite as bad. Many still just run in it. I read a post recently from a person wondering whether or not she should run in it, considering she has lung issues, and in the end she decided it was a good idea. Well, everyone has to decide for themselves!

Probably not walking Bandit today, which is sad, because he's been perkier and walking better, but I know it'll just exacerbate his cough (which is almost nonexistent right now). Then we do have some heat headed our way . . .

Like everything else, this too shall pass.

  2. Your title made me chuckle - sometimes things really do feel way out of control! It's awful that Chicago's air quality got so bad. The Boston area hasn't been nearly as bad lately - knock on wood - the humidity has been enough to contend with.

How much longer until Leadville? Your running seems to going really well and I'm sure you'll do great! I can totally understand wanting a break - no point in your running stressing you out, right?

  3. Between the orange skies, bad air quality and coming off the pandemic, I feel like we're in some sort of bad sci-fi movie. Is this what the future looks like?? Yikes. I remember when you had to tell that guy. Ugh.
Really? People unfollowed you because of a Pride Run post? Wow.

  4. We've had some mild haze, but overall the air quality has been minimally compromised (thus far). Kudos for taking it to the 'mill for your run...I'd have opted for my stairway, LOL.

  5. People were back to wearing masks again around here too this week. I just can't. It's too hot and gross out. I often feel burnt out as a big race approaches. I wish Brooks would do some DC events

    1. I feel pretty fortunate that they've been hosting a few things in Chicago!

  6. Yes, my sister has been telling me about the poor air quality around Chicago! Crazy. I had a sudden flashback to the first South Park movie where, I can't remember the whole plot, but they decide that everything that's going wrong is Canada's fault. And there's a whole song called "Blame Canada."
I hope your race is fun, so it's worth all this angst. And when it's over I think it's a great idea to just focus on your own personal challenges. Not everything has to be a race!

  7. I runfess that I'm considering a marathon in November. Les and his brother are planning to do the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim in a day (25ish miles) and I plan to train with Les. His longest run/hike is 22 miles so I started thinking, "Why not?" I just so happen to have a deferred race credit for a race that is about a month after their big adventure. I hate the way training takes over my life but I think if Les and I are training together it might not be as bad. Not ready to commit yet.

  8. I'm so sorry you're dealing with the smoke and the bad air. We are dealing with record highs right now and I am not a fan. Honestly, I have been starting to unfollow people who egregiously clash with my core values. I used to be able to scroll on but honestly, I'm just tired of being polite.

  9. Hang on, so you think people unfollowed you because you shared a Pride event? I suppose you wouldn't want those followers anyway but yes, take the military men with you please when you leave.

I do want to do a marathon again and I enjoy the training but it's natural to want it to be all over this close to it, whatever the event.

PS who ran-walked 5k this last week? Me!

  10. Love your title... totally get it. Our air quality has tanked and of course, the heat and humidity has gone up at the same time... I had to cut short my run today... no regrets.

I have two running partners that I no longer run with... they broke up with me .LOL

I don't pay attention to my followers... I post for myself... and those few who care.

My goal race is not until Nov... I am gong to try hard not to burn out!!

    1. I don't pay attention to my followers either, but this was a pretty noticeable drop!

  11. That sucks that people stopped following you after you posted that picture. Sigh. So much going on in this world. I feel like we're in a movie or a dream. The air quality is much better but now the humidity is sucking up the joy or running outside.

    1. It's summer--it's always humid! It's not fun to run in, but we gotta do what we gotta do!

  12. Sounds like you didn't lose anyone of value if they dumped you for posting about pride. I've gotten some weird requests since I started doing stories, but nothing with a tangible reason
Hopefully yours also took the foot fetishists with them
This air might kick me back into the gym :(

    1. SJ posted a foot story recently and I teased her that she was going to get all the foot fetishers, lol
