Coffee Talk

Let's catch up over coffee! What are you having? Today, I'm sipping on Dunkin! For nurses' week back in May, I was given a gift card to Dunkin' and bought a pound of beans. Only $11! Such a bargain and oh so tasty. Of course, I have the usual scoop of collagen and splash of half and half to top it off. Old habits die hard...

What would you tell me over coffee?

If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that I have a very interesting student this summer. She raises ducks and chickens and brought me some duck eggs to try. I was intrigued and fried one up the next day to put on my avocado toast. The first one I cracked into the pan came out all gloppy. Ugh. I tried another egg with much better luck. Duck eggs are about twice as big as chicken eggs and the yolk is huge. After trying them a few times, I decided that while they weren't bad, I much prefer chicken eggs.

If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that early last month the transformer on the pole behind my house blew. My hubs walked back there to investigate and found a dead squirrel on the ground in our backyard. He also noticed a lot of other squirrels running around, frantic. While we know the hubs has had a history with squirrels, this time he wasn't the culprit. I'm not sure the squirrels agreed, but apparently their buddy touched the hot wire and caused the explosion, which caused a power outage for us.

If we were having coffee... I'd also tell you that in addition to his issues with the squirrels, this year the hubs has been battling with the bunnies. They have been eating everything he plants in the garden--especially all the lettuce he planted early in the spring. The hubs shared with me that he may have run over a rabbit in the driveway. Oddly enough, he came home later that day to find all his cucumber plants eaten. Another time he walked out to the backyard to see a bunny with a mouthful of cilantro. A few days later, I saw that all my marigolds were gone, bitten off right below the flowers, leaving nothing but jagged stems. Cocoa likes to chase them but for her, it's just a game. Not so for the hubs and he's threatening to get a pellet gun...

If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that I thought we had a poltergeist in the house! I was in the kitchen doing the dishes when a cabinet door opened up and a glass pie pan shot out, shattering all over the kitchen floor. It was very odd since I was nowhere near the cabinet. Even though I vacuumed thoroughly, the next day I stepped on the tiniest sliver of glass, which I had to dig out of the bottom of my foot. When I shared this story with my student, she brought me sage to burn in my kitchen. I opened all the windows in the house and walked around with this burning weed, chanting "No more bad energy" and feeling silly.

If we were having coffee... I'd share that my youngest son blew me away with his recent declaration that he's considering applying to medical school. I have mixed feelings about this, but this is his decision, not mine. I've had friends and colleagues tell me that going into medicine is a terrible idea. They tell me I should discourage him. As if I would do that. We all know that healthcare is a mess right now. I certainly have my challenges dealing with insurance companies and working for a large healthcare company. But in spite of all the challenges, I love being a nurse practitioner and I can't picture anything else I would rather do. It's an honor and a privilege to care for other people's children. I would never dissuade him from pursuing a dream and maybe we need young enthusiastic healthcare providers to change things. Actually, what we really need is unions for healthcare workers and universal healthcare, but that is a topic for a different forum.

It will be a long journey for him. We'll see how it goes.

What would you tell me over coffee? Have you had any weird wildlife stories? Have you ever tried burning sage to rid your home of bad spirits? Have you ever had duck eggs? What would you do if your child decided to pursue a career in a challenging field? And just a note: I'll be out of town at my race this weekend and may not respond as quickly to comments. I'll get there tho!

I'll leave you with this thought:

I'm linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday:  DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida.

  1. Good luck in Leadville! Enjoy the beauty of it all as you fight for air. Haha! The humidity is super low so there's that! How exciting for Matt! I'd encourage him all the way! Healthcare needs bright minds like his. Maddie's sorority big sis is in med school and her BFF from high school is starting at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in a couple of weeks.

  2. Oh the poor squirrel (and all his distraught friends). I'm a rare one who loves all the little furry critters, despite the havoc they wreak on my flowers and garden. Good luck at your race!

  3. We have a Presence in the house but as long as we tell her when we are going to do something to the house and that we aren't going to do anything bad she's OK. She got a bit agitated when Matthew made a big cross on the wall to calibrate a camera once but we explained it wasn't against her and she calmed down. She dropped paint in a painter's tea who had scoffed about ghosts once, which was hilarious. She's quite clearly a former resident and we love the house, too, so all good. I mean, I'm not that kind of person but it's clear there's someone here.

We get duck eggs from my running friend Claire (her wife is a vegan and there are only so many eggs she can eat herself) and Matthew really likes them. They're not huge, though.

    1. So funny about your Presence--we've always had strange feelings that there was a ghost here but it had been a while!

  4. It's so nice of you and your husband to feed the local wildlife..lol I didn't even realize people ate duck eggs! I mean I guess I should have figured but it's not something you hear every day. I do eat chicken eggs but when I stop to think about where they come.from and what they are, it disgust me...lol . Oh how I would love to spend some time talking health care with you. I have so many questions! I just spent all day yesterday with my Nana at Urgent Care! ( for a broken wrist)! Have a great weekend and enjoy the race!

    1. Healthcare is kind of a mess right now. The key is to find a good PCP who will advocate for you. They are few and far between.

  5. What an interesting student you have! First duck eggs and then the sage-story - there's a lot to learn! :-) Is she a student who works with you or is it a medical student whom you teach?

I'm all for bunnies and squirrels - don't let your husband shoot them!

And above all: good luck at Leadville!!

    1. She's a nurse practitioner student--so that means she's already a nurse and is furthering her schooling to be an NP, like me. We work just like doctors--I always say with an NP, you get the brain of a doctor but the heart of a nurse!

  6. Good luck to you son, whatever he decides.

I went to a nurse-practitioner for the first time last month (dermatology). She was marvelous. I salute you all.

I'm like Kim (above): I know they are rodents, but I love the squirrels antics. They crack me up. My heart went out for the sizzles squirrels mates who were left behind.

  7. The bunnies are everywhere this year - they've turned my shade garden into their own salad bar lol

I applaud anyone who wants to go into the healthcare field, especially after all of the challenges of the past couple of years. Bravo to your son!

Good luck at Leadville - can't wait to hear all about it!

  8. Well, my son is going into music, so..... I always say, what if no one wanted to be a musician (or artist, or poet) anymore because they wanted a more lucrative career? What kind of world would we be living in? What if no one wanted to go into medicine- what would we do without doctors? If that's what your son decides, I would encourage him 100%. He's obviously a smart man and will figure it out. It is a long road though!
I'm so excited for your race! GOOD LUCK- I can't wait to hear all about it.

    1. He just loves school, so this is right up his alley, lol. And with a job in medicine, you learn something new every day. It's why I like it too.

  9. I have about had it with our deer this year. They have eaten all of our flowers and killed some of the annuals. My husband and your husband would get along. Mine actually bought a paint gun and is threatening to use it. Our neighbors are going to think we are crazy

    1. HAHA! Yes, the hubs would totally do that. But I'm more worried that our neighbors will report him. Hopefully, they'll think it's a firecracker.

  10. Seems like we're dealing with somewhat similar problems! I have planted nothing, but we had raised beds (like hip height) and the bunnies can't get into that. But when I planted black eye susans they completely mowed them down. And they try to eat Lola . .

Wow for your youngest. That is a really tough career, but I know some are really called to it.

  11. Good luck in your race... very excited for you.

    Nope never tried duck eggs...

Our deer are destroyed all my gardening efforts.

Wow, a doctor in the family? Obviously as a nurse, you have had a positive effect on his career choice.

  12. Drinking my favorite Filipino coffee this morning - straight from my friend's farm on Mindanao! Your husband's fight with bunnies reminds me of when I was in 6th grade and planted my first garden. Just as my bell peppers and watermelons were about 2-3" our pet tortoise came through and ate every single one. He was a gift from a retired school teacher, so we kept him around, but my foray in to gardening ended then.
Have a great race, Wendy! Do you have a bib number and website so we can follow you??

  13. Have fun at your race! I'd be nervous if my kid wanted to go into medicine, but I have one kid who wants to be a pilot (so much money to get to the point where you can make money!) and the other who is planning on only a masters degree in a field that really requires a PhD, so I guess there are many ways for kids to stress us out LOL.

  14. hmmm duck eggs. I think that will be a no from me! BUT your student is on to something with burning sage. I love the smell and if I could get my hands on a spirit stick of sage I would 'clean' my house all the time. I once went to a "Western Weekend" here in NL and there were people, including Native Americans, from all over the US there. It was wild. It's the only time I've been able to buy sage like this.

Poor hubs being taunted by the bunnies and poor bunny that lost his life Christmas Vacation style.

Good luck to your son - I am sure he will do whatever it takes to get where he wants to be.

i know you are on your way to Colorado now, but still wanted to wish you good luck!!

  15. That is great about your son! Good luck to him! I have never tried duck eggs and honestly do not sound appealing. That is creepy about the cabinet door. Has that happened before?

  16. I feel like sage is more of a closed practice so I stick to salt at my threshhold. I think duck eggs might be too egg-y for me... I'd like to try quail eggs instead. I understand the mixed feelings about being a doctor. I am so grateful for everyone in the field right now, and I am so hopeful people don't turn from the field. I think it's amazing he is considering it and I hope it goes well!

    1. I don't know what you mean by a closed practice with regards to the sage, but I gave it a try!

  17. Ooo, I had duck eggs when I was living at my friend's cat rescue/farm in med school -- I like em' because they're a little richer in taste but definitely can't go wrong with chicken eggs! :]

That's nice of your student to give you some sage. Hopefully no more bad energy!!

I wish your son the best! I do still think I'd do it again but I'm definitely pretty burned out (kinda sad since I haven't even been out in the real world that long :[ ). It's definitely a really difficult road but if it's his passion, I do think it'll still be worth it. I do still derive a lot of joy from being able to help my patients/practice medicine, but there are so, so many other aspects that I never knew I'd be dealing with on a daily/regular basis and there's so much that needs to be improved upon/fixed. I'm with you on the wish for unions + universal health care, but alas.

    1. Bottom line, patient care is still my passion, but all the other aspects of healthcare definitely take the joy out of the job!
