After all that activity of the past two weeks, I settled back into the routine of everyday life. But not before I ran a race! Long-time readers know that I like to run the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle 8k in March—it's a race that I return to year after year. I think I first ran it in 1993. My youngest son said he'd run with me. This was his longest race distance so far.

The iconic Columbus Drive start line |
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Chicago Shamrock Shuffle 8k
Monday: Strength Training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 9.75 miles
Thursday: Strength Training
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: rest/travel to the lake
On Sunday morning, I was out the door early to meet my son to take the L downtown. Poor guy, he was tired after bartending the night before until 3 am, but he was ready to run. We walked the 1/2 mile to the train. The trail started to fill up with runners and after a couple stops, my son realized he forgot his race bib. DOH! We got off the train to board a return train to his apartment. Several people helpfully told us we were going the wrong way.

He also didn't get the message about wearing green lol! |
Once he got his bib, we drove back to the L to save time. It didn't look like we were going to make our corral, which closed at 8:20. I figured we'd just have to line up farther back. But as we approached the corrals, I spotted a small opening in the barrier fence around our corral. A volunteer saw our bibs and waved us in. It was 8:40. We couldn't believe our luck! Ten minutes later, we were off!
We ran up Columbus Drive and down Lower Wacker Drive. I was wearing my Brooks Hyperion Max--my speed shoes--and I felt good. I was actually able to keep up with my son for the first 3 miles, but my heart rate was high and I was starting to feel it. I waved him off and walked for about a minute. I only had to stop one more time and after that, I pushed through the rest of the race. We ran up the iconic Mt Roosevelt and made the turn to the finish line. I couldn't push the pace, though, but was happy with my 47:49 finish time! That gave me a 27/260 AG finish. I'll take it. Of course, I had the 'what if I hadn't stopped to walk' voice in my head, but at this point in my life, at age 62, this was a win for me!

Frankie and me |
On Monday, I went back to the gym for strength training. We did a 20 minute pyramid workout starting with 1 dumbbell press (20#), 2 barbell upright rows (35#), 3 single-leg v-ups, and 4 slamball (30#) good mornings. With each subsequent round, we increased the reps by 1. I finished with my 8th round when time was called. As you can imagine, it got challenging towards the end! Doing the math, I did 36 dumbbell presses, 44 barbell upright rows, 52 single leg v-ups, and 60 good mornings. We finished with a 15 minute accessory workout 6 rounds of 3 sets each: box jumps (20"), deficit drops, high jumps, and broad jumps.
I was excited to hit the trails on Wednesday. After being away for 2 weeks, I wondered if the deer missed me lol. It wasn't long before I saw one crossing the trail in front of me! I took a detour to the east side of the preserve and ducked into the piney woods where the deer like to hang out. I saw quite a few of them and they weren't bothered by me, so I was able to get some close-ups! Day made!
I circled back to the west side and continued through the woods on the single track, which was muddy in spots. I also saw 2 dead raccoon carcasses, which was a little upsetting to me. Most likely, it was the coyotes. I know they have to eat, but still- couldn't they clean up after themselves? Ugh. I continued on my way, leaping over fallen trees and sloshing through some mud. I had the trails to myself. What a nice run!
Thursday's strength workout was another pyramid workout structured similarly to Monday's class. We started off with 1 barbell bicep curl (35#), 2 push ups, 3 ab mat situps, and 4 slamball (20#) kickstand squats. We increased each subsequent round by 1 rep. I finished with 10 full rounds! That's 55 bicep curls, 65 push ups, 75 sit ups, and 85 kickstand squats. We finished with 6 rounds of 2 laps awkward carries (carrying 2 different heavy objects).
It was storming when I woke up Friday morning. I was determined to get outside for my run, so I stalked the weather radar like the runner I am. The radar looked clear when it was time to go, and go I did. It was lightly raining, and there was some lightning in the distance, but nothing threatening. As I ran, the rain stopped. I had the bike path to myself until my return trip, when a few other runners appeared. This was a nice, steadily paced run. My legs were tired, so I kept it easy.
In Other News...
I don't normally pay much attention to Strava or Garmin awards, but I was excited to complete the March Elevation Challenge. I climbed 2000m (6561ft) on my runs this month! I don't think I've ever done this before, and living in the flatlands of Illinois, it would be nearly impossible to accomplish this in a month. Maybe I need to move to California!
How was your week? Have you ever had a near miss of a race start? Do you buy the race photos? Do you pay attention to the Garmin or Strava awards?
I'm posting my mini-book reviews for March on Tuesday! You won't want to miss these!
How fun to run a race with your son! And your AG placement is awesome! You are in excellent shape! I hope I am still racing in my 60s!
ReplyDeleteI have only bought race photos once - I bought them at my first marathon in 2006. I would never buy them again but it was fun to get the photos from that race. It was my slowest marathon by far but such a monumental experience.
I am excited for your book reviews. I’ve had a bit of a slumpy month - I DNF’d 4 books!! One was more of a sample but still. That is not typical for me!
My race photos are always horrendous so no, not really. If I had a really good one-maybe?! There is one big race co here that does free race photos that is really nice! Looks like you and your son had so much running together. That is a really fun race.
ReplyDeleteI just love that race--it's the start of race season in Chicago and a lot of local runners come out for it!
DeleteWow, you ended up with perfect timing getting to the start — luck of the Irish? How fun to do a race with your son!
ReplyDeleteI’m looking forward to your book review post — the last one I picked up is going to be a DNF.
I swear to God that my son is the luckiest person I know. We were joking about it in the corral. That would never have happened if he hadn't been with me lol
DeleteThat race sounds fun!!! Other than the drama leading up to the start, lol. Nice job keeping up with your son for three miles. And great job on the AG placement- there were 260 in your AG? This was a huge race! I'm used to much smaller races these days.
ReplyDeleteI love the photos from your trail run, and I love that you're obviously dressed for chilly temps. I sweltered on my trail run this week.
I'll definitely come back Tuesday for the book reviews!!!
There were about 28000 runners in this race--it is run by the same people who run the Chicago Marathon. I was so excited for my son to do a big race in Chicago. I think he really liked it!
DeleteWell done, Wendy! 👏👏👏
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that you got to run with your son—how many mums can say they do that with their grown-up kids? He cracks me up with forgetting his bib! 🤣
I only buy race photos if they’re really good. Actually, the one you got from the Shamrock Shuffle is really nice! If I had your husband's phone number, I’d totally tell him to buy it for you and have it framed as a surprise gift!
He'd tell you that I have too many photos already, lol! If they have a sale (and sometimes they do) then i'll buy the digital version.
DeleteWe joke that my youngest is so smart but he couldn't find his way out of a box. Absent minded professor. It frustrates my hubs to no end, but just amuses me, lol
That's a good race picture! Agree, a bit pricey though. Your son was a trooper for racing after his late work shift! I haven't cut it close for a race, but I have been in the port a potty at race start for 3 races so far now!! oops.
ReplyDeleteI've had that happen too! But with a chip start, it wasn't a big deal. We were happy to get into the corral, though!
DeleteNice work on the Shamrock! I have had a few near-misses on start lines, and it’s a stressful situation. Even having the option to just line up farther back than desired, I’d rather get in line where I’m “supposed” to be, LOL.I think I’ve only ever bought one race photo, when I ran my first-ever long distance race (DAM to DAM 2008). The prices are outrageous!
ReplyDeleteI agree-they charge a lot for photos. But i have bought my marathon photos. Running a marathon (or 4) was just such a big deal to me!
DeleteLovely to do this race with your son - well done to both! I'm resigning myself to not doing my upcoming half but being the best supporter to my friend Claire that I can, so I will have to plan my supporting route carefully!
ReplyDeleteWell done with the race!! I would nearly die from the stress of having to turn back to pick up the bib! Impressive that your son worked until almost morning and still went to do the race. I think paying for a race photo would be worth it if it was a good photo and I wanted to use it for something special. I think 29 USD is a good price for a photo if the resolution and quality is good!
ReplyDelete2000 m is a decent elevation to do with running! I actually joined some walking challenges on Garmin for April. I haven't been in form for anything like that for a long time but also, it's hard to do a challenge that requires an outdoor activity in the winter when the weather is so much more unpredictable.
I agree with you--the weather really is a big factor here. We've had to deal with a lot of wind this year--more than usual. And winter is a whole other challenge!
DeleteCongrats on the race and AG win!! I hate not being prepared and the forgetting my packet/bib would've put me into a tailspin. Maybe a good adrenaline rush? How fun to do a race with your son! I've only paid for a race photo once - and of course the week after I did it they had black Friday sales. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteIn the past, I would have been upset but this was all about having fun and so it felt good to just go with the flow!
DeleteHow fun to run the Shamrock Shuffle with your son! That a great race photo! We used to buy some of our marathon photos. We have a sports themed basement so they fit nicely there.
ReplyDeleteThat's some impressive elevation gain! I do enjoy earning the Garmin and Strava badges.
I don't usually pay attention to those badges, but this was definitely a fun one to get!
DeleteCongrats on your race. I agree that any finish is an accomplishment nd you should be proud. So fun that you share the experience with your son.
ReplyDeleteNo I do not purchase race photos. I think I did for my first half and first marathon but $29 is too much IMO
At this point in my life--does it matter anymore?
DeleteYou look so happy and I love that! I also think that race looks so fun! I mentioned wanting to go to Chicago for St. Patrick's Day in the next couple of years and I hope we can make it work.
ReplyDeleteI would call the whole event a huge win. And yes. the deer missed you. I know it.
The Shamrock Shuffle is usually held after St Pat's Day because in Chicago, St Pat's Day is a big holiday. IYKYK.
DeleteThat is so cool that you first ran the race in 1993! And you're still out there, keeping up with the young kids like your sun! (I can't imagine getting up after bartending until 3 am though, ha!) Well done sneaking into the corral just in time! Looks like a very fun day.
ReplyDeleteIt's so much fun and I hope to keep running with him for years to come!
