Savoring the Last Days of Fall

We have had an amazing fall--warm weather and beautiful colors! The leaves are starting to fall, but we've still got good color. I'm sure that's going to change in a hurry with the impending arrival of more winter-like weather. As much as I don't love winter, I will admit that I am looking forward to days of curling up on the couch by the fire and reading a good book. And winter foods! Soups, stews, and baked pastas--hearty fare that just don't work in the warmer weather. I came home from my aunt's house last week with a bag of wild rice that their neighbor harvested, and I made chicken and wild rice soup with it. I also baked an apple crisp.

I know by March, though, I'll be ready for warm weather again!

Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: trail run 7.6 miles
Monday: Strength training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 7.7 miles
Thursday: Strength training
Friday: run 3.2 miles
Saturday: rest

On Sunday, I skipped my Trail Sisters run to do a solo tour of my local forest preserve. We're at peak color right now, and I wanted to check it out. I was also still feeling a little blue after last weekend's trip to the north woods, and I hoped that a run in my pretty little preserve would help turn it around. I was right. I got there fairly early, but was surprised to see quite a few cars in the parking lot. Not long after I started my run, I was surprised to see a deer standing in the woods. I ended up seeing a few more, including 2 bucks. It's mating season, and one of the bucks was chasing a doe!

The colors were spectacular, even when the sun was behind the clouds. This ended up being a strong run for me. I'm going to take advantage of this beautiful weather as much as I can. You know what comes next...

Monday is deadlift day--my favorite day! This week we built to 3 sets of 2 at 2.5-10# heavier than our 3RM. For my partner and me, that was 185#, so our deadlifts were 190#. I got the first set of 2 off the ground, but was only able to do 1 rep with each of the other sets. Pretty sure I got in my head--it was freaking heavy--so next week, I'll try it again. I finished up with shoulder presses, 3 sets of 2 at 62.5#, and 3 sets of 8 ring rows. A push/pull for the upper body, I guess!

I went to the pool on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, I hit the trails again. It was relatively warm (54F) when I started out, and with strong winds predicted, I wanted to catch the colors before the leaves blew off the trees. There's also the risk of falling branches and yes, trees, and I didn't want to deal with that! The sun was behind the clouds initially, but the sun peeked out, and the leaf colors really popped.

I didn't see any deer on my run today, but I did see some odd characters out there, including a guy throwing a ninja star at a tree repeatedly. He was wearing what looked like a backpack, but as I ran by, he turned to look at me, and I saw that he was wearing a black flak vest. A sign of the times? As I ran on, I considered the possibilities. ICE is recruiting pretty heavily here. Anyhoo, I put him behind me and continued to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The wind picked up quite a bit, and the leaves were falling!

On Thursday, we once again worked on heavy bench presses and back squats, 6 sets of 3 lifts for each. We were supposed to increase our weight 2.5-10#, but I stuck with the weight I did 2 weeks ago. The bench presses at 80# felt HARD, and I worked on keeping my shoulders down. For the back squats, I again worked on depth, using 115#, and by the end, I felt pretty good about this sesh. Sammy Jo gave me lots of good feedback, too. As much as I loathe squatting, I am determined not to let this lift break me! Next week, I'll increase the weight to 120# and continue to squat low. I got this, right?

The hubs and I woke up Friday morning to a dead refrigerator. Lucky for us, we have a second refrigerator in the basement, so we were able to move most everything down there. We were also able to purge all the expired foods. After all that, I realized I had a small window of time for a short run before work. THANK GOODNESS! I laced up and headed out into my neighborhood, wearing my Brooks Hyperion Max 3, my legs on fire. I was flying and my legs wouldn't let me slow down. In fact, my second mile clocked in at 8:52. I was excited about that, and I finished with a 3.2 mile run, 9:06 m/m, and a beautiful sunrise. Sometimes you get just what you need!

How was your week? Do you like fall foods? Are you still enjoying fall weather?

We're up at the lake this weekend--I'm hoping to get out on the trails this morning before we head back home. I woke up to snow and wind, so we'll see how that turns out. I'm also looking forward to a few quieter days ahead until the holiday activities ramp up in December.  I'm also excited to pick out a new refrigerator! Yay! Don't you just love getting new appliances?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. You have some beautiful autumn colours!!!
You're doing great with the squats! After the lower back issue this summer and later something with a glute, I haven't come back to heavy squats yet myself but in the meantime I'm working on form and depth.

    1. That's what I'm working on, so my squats aren't as heavy as they should be for a powerlifting cycle. But I'm definitely feeling thes!

  2. Today Jenny asked if we would want their 88 degree weather and even though it’s going to be in the 30s today my answer was no! I am ready for cooler, cozier weather. We might get a dusting of snow today but it will warm back up to the 50s later in the week. We have also had a gorgeous fall. I have really taken the colors in and enjoyed the season. One silver lining to my accident is being home. Had the accident not happened, I would have had 8 work trips!!

I had a harder week as I had a bad flare over the weekend but was able to get an injection on Monday. I was able to go to an OTF class on Thursday as the joint was much better by then. I’m going another class this am and have decided to sign up for an 8 class/month membership when my class pack runs out.

    1. I'm glad that you're feeling better after the injection! I was feeling very achy yesterday and had to take ibuprofen a few times, just for some relief. I truly believe it was due to the weather, as I woke up to snow this morning in Wisconsin!

  3. Oh noooo a dead refrigerator! Can it be repaired or are you in the market for a new one?

    Your fall colors are SPECTACULAR.

  4. I am also loving all the cooler temps and beautiful colors outdoors. I’ve been bored of posting photos though and not inspired lately but definitely enjoying. I’m ready to make some soups this week as well. Sounds like you are lifting some serious deadlift weight! That is one thing that I miss about working out at home. I just don’t have that kind of weight available! Have a great week

    1. After waking up to snow this morning, I lacked motivation to run or post! I did both, but man, that hit hard.

  5. All right, that settles it- next year I'm visiting in November! My October visit was too early to see the fall colors properly. Your photos are beautiful!!! Of course- I know exactly what comes next for you because I've been listening to your forecast. It will be a great introduction to "winter" for my son (who's only lived in Florida and Texas).
Our weather has been annoying hot, but we're getting a cool down this week! I will definitely be making all the fall foods while it lasts.
I need Sammy Jo to come and help me with my squats!

    1. Oh, it's here, my friend. I woke up to snow this morning and we're supposed to get more tonight. My 'I don't mind winter' state of mind completely vanished. Mother Nature 1, Wendy 0

  6. Ohhh! Peak color! I wish we had the leaves changing here!

I'm so sorry about your fridge! That stinks! When ours went a few years back, I was thrilled to get all new appliances (they were all over 15 years old and I wanted them to match since it was our kitchen). It was a nice refresher in the midst of a band situation.

Great job with all your strength. I see myself getting back to the gym tomorrow.

    1. We seem to replace things as they break down. The new fridge is exciting though--i picked one with French Doors and a bottom freezer!

  7. The leaves in your preserve are spectacular! Ours are mostly gone now with the high wind we had a couple of days ago.

We have a buck that's been hanging out in our back yard a lot this past week. One morning I watched him walk right up the middle of the creek and another day I watched him saunter between our neighbors' and our house.

    1. We saw a few bucks up north too! You don't see them often, so it's really a treat.

  8. We're home in SoCal for another week and it's suppose to be 90 today. Not my favorite this time of year because it also means hot Santa Ana winds. I love fall foods and will start enjoying them more the next time we head back to Tennessee!

    1. I'm not a fan of 90F either! Why can't we have nice temperatures?

  9. Those deep squats look scary! We finally. Have a lot of fall colors showing up, and they’re probably all gonna be gone soon with the cold temps and wind. We had snow flurries yesterday, but nothing accumulated. Northern Iowa was another story!

    1. They are scary!!! My ego took a hit, dropping the weight, but I'm actually feeling the results of the deeper squats. Makes me happy.

  10. Well done on those deadlifts, Wendy!!
At CrossFit last week, we did 3 reps every 2 minutes, and I managed 105 pounds, I still have a long way to go!
Your stats made me look up the benchmarks, and apparently, an intermediate lifter should hit 1.25 to 2 times their body weight… so I’m definitely still in the beginner camp. But hey, that’s the goal for next year, haha!

    1. I love deadlifts and they don't scare me like squats. I should be lifting heavier with squats, but depth is so important. Keep up the good work Catrina! It will pay off on the road.

  11. I'm looking out at the dark, ugly, wet, and windy day........2nd in a row groaning. I really hate this time of the year. It makes me feel tired all the time and not want to do things. I envy your attitude. I was expecting us to have nice weather when we got home from France so I could continue my walking/activity level; but Mother Nature had other ideas. I'm really thinking hard about going over to the community center to see about memberships before I turn into a total couch potato. Or in this case computer potato, as I'm really not a big tv watcher. Beautiful pictures. We don't seem to have the color here in the neighborhood that we've had other years, it must be due to the weather extremes too wet followed too hot for too long. Keep up the good work. I'm enjoying visiting everyone on my blog list to catch up, as it's been far too many months since I've blogged. It feels good to get back into it.

    1. Glad to hear from you Sandy!!! I feel you on the weather--I'm usually excited about the first snow, but today's snow came too early and I really struggled with motivation. Plus, I was enjoying our spectacular fall weather and scenery. Why can't we have nice things?

  12. I hope your fridge just needs a (low cost) repair! Our fridge makes annoying noises and I can't quite figure out what the cause is. Although one time it was some item in the freezer rattling! I learned something new reading your blog - I had no idea wild rice was harvested! I do love wild rice. I've never given it thought, but it was a fun fact to learn!

  13. Ouch on the fridge... hope it's fixable.

Your colors are so pretty... ours are blah this year.

It's soon in my book for snow or cold weather. We may get both this week :(
