Does the full moon make you want to howl?
Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm not actually howling at the moon in this picture. I'm cursing Mother Nature. While I was stopping to take a selfie for this post on my virtual race, the skies opened up and it started to pour on me. Mother Nature doesn't always play nice, does she?
On the run, I don't always mind the rain. If it is a warm day, I enjoy running in the rain. As long as it is a gentle rain, that is. Being pelted with heavy rain is a different story. Rain plus 45 degrees plus wind does not make for pleasant running conditions. Although I shouldn't complain at all. Perspective. My friend Penny ran a 50k on the Chicago lakefront in these very same conditions. Now that is badass. It was her party and she can cry if she wants to. I would have.
While I ran my 10k, I reflected a bit on the week. My week at work was crazy. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated. There may have been some tears shed at several points in time. Finally, my coworkers and I asked each other if it was a full moon.
We found out that it was.
Do you think people act a little crazier around a full moon? Those of us in healthcare seem to think so. Although studies show that there isn't any more chaos when there's a full moon versus not, it sure seems like more than a coincidence. And it sure felt like it this week! All I can say is that I'm glad I can take to the road to pound it out. Some wine may have been consumed as well.
I've got some pretty supportive partners and coworkers. We brought our best to the clinic for Halloween, and the patients loved it!
When you work with kids, you get to do things like this. |
As I mentioned, I had that virtual 10k to run this week--the GoneforARun Faster than BOO 10k! If you remember, I put this one on the calendar as a recovery run after I ran Chicago. When I planned to do this race, I didn't know what kind of shape my legs would be in, but as it turns out, recovery is going well. I'm pretty much back to my baseline mileage. Even though I don't love the cooler weather, it is much easier for me to run when the temps are in the 40s and 50s. Wouldn't it be nice if it could be cool in the mornings and warm up by noon?
Oh wait, I live in Chicago.
Anyways, I did this 10k in my neighborhood. It was windy, and the trees were starting to bare their branches. I have really enjoyed the pretty colors this fall. My legs really wanted to fly for this one, and I was really happy with my finish time: 6.2 miles, 54 mins, 8:41 pace.
Thanks to Gone for A Run for providing me with this complimentary entry in exchange for this blog post. I received some nice swag! And I loved this medal. The ghost spins around and he glows in the dark. This is my first Halloween themed run and I loved it!
Do you think people act crazier when there's a full moon? Do you act crazy when there's a full moon? Did you run a Halloween themed run? Did you dress up?
I'm linking this post up with HoHoRuns and MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap! I bet some of the others are posting about Halloween! Check it out!
Happy (day after) Halloween! The swag for that virtual 10k is way too adorable! And I really want to believe that you are howling at the moon because that would just be way too funny! I so glad you are recovering well!!
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy with my recovery! Wish that PF would go away, tho.
Deletelol I love that picture! Good job on the run! I didn't dress up yesterday but I did go trick or treating with a friend and his daughter. Yes I do believe people get a little unhinged when there's a full moon. Makes things a little more interesting :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting is a good word for it...
DeleteI have never done a Halloween run...but several Christmas runs, a few St. Paddy's runs and a handful of Turkey Trots. I guess there's a new bucket list item! The full moon....I don't pay much attention, but my legs (especially the hamstrings/glutes) were very out-of-sorts this week, so that all makes perfect sense (#hindsight).
ReplyDeleteWhen you work with people, you tend to look for any reason for odd behavior! Seems like we are asking ourselves if it is a full moon on a daily basis lately!
DeleteI love that medal! I felt crazier the week before last and agree the full moon has an affect on my mood lol!
ReplyDeleteSeems like it affects a lot of people!
DeleteWhen I was growing up, my Mom was a psychiatric nurse. She swore by the full moon and dreaded going to work during that time. I'm a landlord, and Thursday night one of my tenants crashed her car into the front of the apartment building because she was drunk out of her mind and trying to run over her boyfriend. So yes, I definitely believe in the power of the full moon!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you do it! LOL!
DeleteNo longer being in a service industry, I can't say as I've noticed.
ReplyDeleteWe had a very nice, very quiet Halloween last night. We gave up handing out candy when we moved here. This house really isn't conducive to that, unless your idea of fun is either camping out on the landing or running up and down a flight while dogs are running around barking and Gizmo is no doubt running somewhere because of all the commotion.
OTOH, another loooooong week here. And I realized that I don't actually plan to run until Tuesday, because it's supposed to be nice Tuesday and it's been a while since I had nice weather to run in.
Today was spectacular. And it's supposed to be 70 tomorrow. November? I'll take it!
DeleteMy coworkers said the kids were crazy this week due to the full moon, but I didn't see it. I had one day where they were overly silly, but I think it was just the classes that lean toward being silly anyway!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that teachers were in on the full moon thing too!
DeleteOh, we are!
DeleteI did a race but didn't dress up. I only do when I go to the party. On the homefront, we had zero trick or treaters.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have very many here either!
DeleteLooks like so much fun where you work. I work with older kids so there was no dressing up for me! I did run on Halloween but it was not a race so I didn't dress up there either. I did however put on my Wicked 10K race shirt ( from a race a few years back) after I came home and showered. Does that count?
ReplyDeleteI don't mind running in the rain either, as long as its a light rain and is not freezing! -M
We had fun dressing up for Halloween! It's a tough place to work, but I'm glad I get to work with kids!
DeleteI do think people act crazier when there is a full moon! I've noticed it a few times throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteGreat job and pace on your virtual 10K!
We keep asking ourselves if it's the full moon....more often than not, it is. Coincidence? I think not...
DeleteI keep wanting to get out and either trail run or mountain bike with the full moon. I love it even more when there is snow because then it is SUPER bright. I'm not sure about acting crazy...I guess there is a certain baseline crazy that I don't really notice much difference :)
ReplyDeleteOh, the full moon in the winter is something else!
DeleteThe weather was ghastly on Saturday but then gorgeous Sunday. Typical Chicago. The moon has been bewitchingly beautiful this week!
ReplyDeleteIt could not have been nicer today! Mother Nature redeemed herself.
DeleteWe can always tell when there is a full moon at work! It just gets crazy. I wanted to do the Faster Than Boo 10k. I thought the swag was cute. I really like the top you are wearing for the virtual race too! Congrats on a great finish time. Thanks for linking up.
ReplyDeleteGood thing orange is one of my favorite colors!
DeleteFunny you posted about the full moon cause I posted about it too. The kids were rambunctious at school this week. On top of the full moon, we had Red Ribbon Week dress up days and activities going on that added to the chaos. As a teacher, I definitely see a difference when it's a full moon or when it's raining and stormy out. I've never done a virtual run, but I would love to try one some day.
ReplyDeleteWhile I was preparing for this post, I came upon all these memes about teaching during a full moon. I had no idea that you guys were affected too! Yikes...a whole classroom full of wound up kids!
DeleteGreat job on your virtual 10k! That's a cute medal! I like how you all dressed up at work!
ReplyDeleteThe kids just loved it!
DeleteI didn't even realize there was a full moon....I guess I missed it.... I dress up for work every year, too(as you know)... but I have never done a costume race/run... would be fun to do one day:)
ReplyDeleteYour patients must have been really calm--lucky you!
DeleteWe don't really celebrate Halloween down here in South Africa - so pretty much just another day for us.
ReplyDeleteWell done on your virtual 10 k!
Yes, Halloween is really an American holiday. But like everything here, it's gone way over the top.
DeleteI am with you sister! Trying being in a nursing home when it is a full moon! I am a firm believer! I was glad I did not have to make rounds this weekend :) I ran a 10K on Halloween too- it was a Halloween theme but some people dressed up which is always fun to see! I hope you and I both have a great week, I agree last week was just CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for a calmer week for both of us!
DeleteI've always wanted to do a fun run in costume! I don't think we have any races around here though that does something like that :( And an a full moon totally does effect people! My S.O. is a police officer and he can attest to that.
ReplyDeleteYep, police officers and nurses--we know about these things...
DeleteI totally think the full moon makes people batty!!!! Congrats on the great time for the virtual race!
ReplyDeleteI would imagine, working in meteorology, that you heard a lot of crazy stories!
DeleteLove the medal and T-shirt! Great to hear that you're back to your baseline mileage! I don't know if I act crazier around the full moon, though it would be good to have an excuse...haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm always looking for an excuse!
DeleteI don't work in the health field but a co-worker of mine's wife does and she swears by it that the crazies come out in full force on a full moon. I was in New Orleans this weekend and is there ever a time when it's not crazy down there? I did see some wild stuff. Had the rain not put a damper on things I'm afraid I would have been in the middle of it on Halloween. It is fun to dress up though. Gone for a Run has some really nice swag for their Virtual Runs!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to NO for years! I'm thinking for our sister trip next year?
DeleteLove the costumes that you wore to work and also love the medal. Sounds like a great virtual race overall! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt was a bit crazy in the beginning, but everything evens out, doesn't it?
DeleteOh gosh, yes. We see the kid and pugs go bananas during a full moon, so I assume it's the same for everyone across the board. Sorry that things were so crazy! However, looks like you had a great virtual and a great week, regardless!
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad it settled down!
DeleteWhat a cool medal! I love when races put some thought into their bling!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're recovering okay - just in time for Chicago winterrrrrrr!
Hey, Mama Nature gifted us with some pretty nice days yesterday and today! I'm hoping we have a mild winter...
DeleteCall me crazy but I love full moons. We can;t see the stars here at night so a bright full moon cheers me up.
ReplyDeleteNot crazy at all! Especially in the winter, the full moon is pretty amazing to see!
DeleteI never noticed if the full moon affects my mood. When is the next one? I need to pay attention haha.
ReplyDeleteAlso, that virtual 10k swag is the cutest!!
I'll check the calendar and let you know! :p
DeleteI haven't done a Halloween run but it sounds fun. You did great on your virtual 10K. Great time and love the swag! No dressing up for me this year, but the kiddos had a blast!
ReplyDeleteHaving to dress up for work makes Halloween more fun for me, especially since my boys have outgrown it.
DeleteNot sure that I noticed any crazier than usual behavior with the full moon, but my house is pretty crazy anyways LOL. Add in some Halloween sugar and woah...
ReplyDeleteHaha! I can only imagine!
DeleteI have noticed that I don't sleep as well during full moons ... which is odd because I have black out shades in my room so it isn't any lighter. I definitely think there is something to it.
ReplyDeleteIt messes with us...
DeleteNice run! I hate running in the rain unless it is very warm... tropical... and not heavy. Otherwise I am wimping out and staying home!
ReplyDeleteOh, no, I'm out there no matter what the conditions! I might not like it tho...
DeleteI'm with you on the rain. I'll run in the rain, but not in the cool rain. Good job on the virtual 10K. I've been doing several virtual runs lately, and I'm really enjoying them.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have that extra incentive!
DeleteYes to the full moon craziness especially at the high school I work at. Although with high schoolers crazy is relative.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the truth? So much drama...
DeleteThe medal and shirt are adorable! Great pace on your 10K! I remember in grad school how the whole office of graduate assistants would get so cranky and sensitive right around the full moon - I didn't think anything of it until a PhD student noted it, and then it happened each month without fail!
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a thing!
DeleteWe had a ton of fun dressing up and the kids just loved it!
ReplyDeleteWell you know I believe in the full moon phenomenon! It totally brings out the crazies at the hospital!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I knew you were in! LOL!
DeleteI'm pretty sure my coworkers and I are crazy, full moon or not haha...but I bet there is something to that!
ReplyDeleteSeems like it!
DeleteWow, so speedy so soon! That medal is really spooktacular! ;-) I don't think I'm crazy with a full moon, but it does seem like more crazy things happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to have some speed in these old legs...
DeleteTotally saw you comment on another blog that you went to Marquette, so I naturally had to most on over to your page. I'm a first year dental student at Marquette and went here for undergrad too. I ran the half marathon yesterday as part of the make running festival, but didn't dress up. There were some spectatorsdressed up along the course though which was fun. Congrats on a fun 10k!
ReplyDeleteI love that you chased the link because I'm a Marquette grad! Such a fun place to go to school!
Deleteomg I LOVE that race shirt! If I hadn't already committed to doing the MKE run again next year, I'd rock out a 10K in your 'hood!<3 Good job for getting through that tough, rainy run. I'm totes with you there -- warm and rain is okay, but pelting jerk rain in the cold isn't. PSH.:P
ReplyDeleteWell, I may join you in MKE next year...we'll see. I'm all about destination races for 2016. Is Milwaukee a destination?
DeleteThat looks like so much fun!!! You look great in your costume!! I haven't run in a Halloween themed race, but it would be so fun to dress up and race!
ReplyDeleteI've never run a live Halloween themed race! The virtual race is the best I can do!
DeleteI actually ran a 5k on halloween too but my mom and i didnt realize we shoudl look for a costume until the night before lol so we didn't dress up. saw a lot of fun costumes though!
ReplyDeleteI"m not a big running costume person. Last year I ran a Christmas themed race, and I did wear a fun outfit!
DeleteThat Boo medal is too freaking cute!! I wish they had fun local races like that in Toronto
ReplyDeleteI wish it were a local race--it was a virtual race. But great bling, I have to say!
DeleteI think the cycle of the moon definitely has an impact on crazy people and crazy things! I love y'alls costumes and I bet the kids did as well. Glad to hear recovery is going well and great job on your 10K! Cute swag and medal, too. It's crazy how much virtual runs have progressed.
ReplyDeleteWe had a blast dressing up at work!
