Runfessions: September

It's the last Friday in September, which can only mean one thing...Runfessions! It's been an eventful month over here at TTLWH and I've got plenty of things to runfess. Sigh. My soles are always black this time of the month.

Do you runfess? If you don't, you need to jump in. Marcia keeps the runfession open and the penance is easy. Just share your running-related transgressions with the rest of us. We get you.

Ok, I'm going in. See you in a bit...

I ran a half marathon a few weeks ago. You may have read my recap. I shared what a tough race that was for me. The race felt like the culmination of a really tough summer of running. In fact, I runfess that after the race, I seriously contemplated giving up running for good. Guys, you know I LOVE to run. But running has not felt good for me at all lately. I took a week off from everything following the race. The good news is that by the end of the week, I was missing running. I have started running again. We'll see how things go as the weather cools off.

Speaking of the race, ZOOMA offered free race photos! Who doesn't love free race photos? I runfess that I was disappointed with the 2 race photos I got. One of the photos I got wasn't even of me. Not even close. I'm wondering how this happened. I reached out to ZOOMA but haven't heard any more about the mix-up.

I tried to make it look like me...
After the race, it was time to replace my Mizuno Wave Inspires. But I runfess that picking out a pair of Mizunos is always a problem for me. I've never been vain about my shoe colors but, Mizuno really does have the ugliest shoe color combinations. Am I right? I will admit the color of my current Wave Inspire 14s is starting to grow on me. Good thing, since I now have 2 pairs and I'll be running in them for a while.

This week, I had a nicely paced run in some cooler temperatures. As always I stopped to take a run selfie. I runfess that another runner came out of the tunnel right as I was filming my sequence. Busted! I felt really stupid. Tell me this hasn't happened to you...

I runfess that I signed up for my final half marathon of the year after that one good run. It's not until November. I'm counting on Mother Nature to have my back...

What do you have to runfess? Have you ever contemplated quitting running? Free race photos--yay or nay? Ever gotten a completely wrong race photo? Do you buy shoes based on colors? Have you ever been caught taking a run selfie? Impulsive or a planner when it comes to races?

I'm linking up with Marcia's Healthy Slice for Runfessions as well as Fairytales and Fitness and Running on Happy for the Friday Five.

  1. I have to runfess that I have never contemplated quitting running. It's just such a big part of my life, I would definitely miss it! Glad you came back to "our" side after a week break! :)

    1. I have to find a way to reconcile where I'm at in running with continuing. It's been such a rapid decline--thank you menopause--so I'm hoping with time I'll accept my new normal.

  2. That's so weird about the ZOOMA photo mix-up. Hopefully they will get back to you about it soon.

You know I love Mizunos, but I have to agree with you about their ugly color choices for the woe's sneakers. The men's sneakers always have great colors - which is super annoying. Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I need pink or purple on my sneakers, lol

  3. I will cut back my miles but I will never stop running completely. Yeah those pics were ridiculous. Must be weird to be that woman who showed up as everyone else. How does that happen?

  4. The races I've done with free photos don't find yours -- you have to scroll through an album on Flickr or the like. By the time I'm half way through I'm usually ready to pay $$ to have someone find any of me. :-) Most races I do sell out early, but I did just sign up for my race on Sunday last weekend.

    1. I like to wait until the last minute to sign up but races now are on to that--they raise the prices super high for us procrastinators!

  5. I get caught trying to take running selfies all the time it is quite silly for on lookers I bet. Too funny on the race photos. I am holding on for cooler temps and hope that helps me regain some of the running shape I lost over the summer. Fingers crossed for you-hang in there

  6. You are definitely not alone in feeling like you want to give up running. I'm slowly losing sight of the benefits and keep thinking about the other things I could do with my time. But then there's those days where the weather is perfect and you think " I want to savor this, I should go for a run". I think maybe we need to just adjust our expectations.

Have a good weekend Wendy. Tha ka for linking up! - M

  7. Oh, I have had many selfie busts. Too many...and they are usually people I know who are catching me in the act.

  8. I love free race photos, but they frequently don't seem to be as good. Too bad because I won't pay the crazy prices any more. Especially since they are usually downloads now.

    1. I'll wait because MarathonFoto usually has a sale a few weeks after the race.

  9. I'm so sorry the race was so rough. I can totally understand feeling like quitting. I hope you body decides to play nice again because I know how much you love it! Have a great weekend Wendy!

  10. I love free race photos... and have gotten the wrong ones. Summer races ALWAYS make me want to quit running. I'm not built for the heat! Then fall comes aaaaaahhhh!

  11. The one free race photo I got has been the best one of me ever! Funny. I never buy photos since I don't like how I look, and the angles are usually weird and up my nose. This free one was perfect.

    1. I've had good free race photos and I've had bad ones from the pros. You never know what you're going to get, right?

  12. I learned to never trust free race photos. Since I knew they would have them, Les didn't take any as I crossed the finish line of a marathon. Of course there was not a single shot of me crossing the finish line! I guess the photographer went on break at that time. I know, #FWP.

I can't be picky about shoe color with my small feet. I really do live by "if the shoe fits, buy it in every color."

    1. It's so frustrating to scroll through hundreds of "free photos" to only find that the photographer missed you.

  13. Free race photos are a great idea in theory but I usually feel like I should expect snafus. None of my free ones have ever been good but I've never gotten a wrong photo. Sorry about that!

I try not to be picky but I feel like I get poop choices BECAUSE I have specialty shoes and not the "popular" ones everyone goes on about. I don't know, maybe it's just me?

I have considered giving up running after my first marathon. I was so so unhappy with everything but I took time off and eventually fell back in love again.

I don't really mind other people watching me shoot a video lol. There's a popular path I run along and there's plenty of cyclist that I have to time and make sure they don't run into me. I'm sure they see what I'm doing lol. I just try to be respectful and quick about it.

  14. Yes after a bad race (and I have had several), we think about quitting. I have thought about just running 5ks often. But then the pain goes away and we do it all over again.

So happy to hear you are running again.

You are meant to be a runner...even if your results are not up to your HIGH standards.

Besides, I want you to continue blogging and hope to run a race together sometime...

  15. I've been tagged as the wrong person in race pictures before - and I have to say, that is a job I would not want to do.

  16. I have had multiple runfies interrupted by cyclists - somewhere, deep in my Google Drive, is a gem of one where I'm giving the cyclist a fantastic side eye with my usual resting bitch face. I started giving up actually out here, because it seemed like I was always surrounded by other runners, cyclists, and dog walkers!

    1. That's funny--I bet you won't have as big an issue in Indy. It doesn't happen to me very often here, but when it does--I'm so embarrassed!

  17. I'd be lying if I said it hasn't crossed my mind at some point to give up running - but like you I just couldn't imagine not running! I may be searching for new shoes soon and I'm sure color will play a role in the final decision.

  18. Love free photos but it doesn't guarantee GOOD photos. ;)

Sometimes you have to break up with something to fall in live with it.

Obviously when it comes to races I'm a planner. :)

  19. That's so funny/not funny about the race photo! I looked a little closer and yeah, definitely not you!!! So funny how you updated it! What half are you doing in November? I know it's been a crappy summer running-wise for you, but catching up on your recent posts, it looks like you've had little redemption!

  20. Oh gosh, I do hate that awkward moment when you get busted taking running pics. That photo mix up is ridiculous but I love your 'cover up' for it! Lol

You know I'm a Newton fan and for the most part I have been pretty pleased with their color choices. However, I would like to have some normal color options like red and blue. I've actually been tempted to buy the men's version several times.

    1. I have thought about buying the men's version of my shoes too, but I don't want to risk injury running in a different shoe!

  21. Happy to hear you're running again. I've never dared film myself running as I fear someone would grab my phone. I have to runfess that I need to calm down on shouting SWIFTS AHOY when I see people from the Swifts club and when I see my friend Dave crossing a finish line, "How's your groin?" is not an appropriate shout-out. I get excited at races, though ...

  22. I rarely have good luck with local race photos...but I'd expect better of a bigger race organization like ZOOMA. I buy whatever shoe colors I find on sale - at the moment my shoes are actually predominantly black and gray. A bit boring, but at least not hideous.

    1. I always go for black. And if not black, then gray. Definitely the safe choices.

  23. I wish I had time to runfess last week, I had some good ideas.
I've managed good race photos exactly once, and I bought them. Other times I've been either totally shut out (Brooklyn Half), NYRR didn't end up having them (Manhattan Half - I was sad there, it was my first) or just bad.
    Shoes. LOL love that graphic
