Life Goes On...

With the passing of Labor Day, we've unofficially left summer behind. Sadly, it rained all Labor Day weekend and we weren't able to get out on the water one last time. When you live in the Midwest, summer is so short. We try to squeeze in as much as we can, but it never feels like enough. My oldest son and I did get up to Madison to visit my youngest and drop off a few more things. While I did ok saying goodbye after our initial drop off, this time was much more difficult for both of us. I think it felt more real.

I was feeling pretty low this week--missing my boy. You know who really missed him? My pup Cocoa. She was really quiet all week, sleeping a lot and not really eating much. By Friday, she seemed much more like herself. We're all adjusting to our new norm. I was really busy at work and that helped keep my mind occupied. Life goes on.

Running
With the arrival of cooler weather, my runs felt really good. There's always a silver lining to the arrival of fall weather! Since I didn't run on Sunday, on Monday I ran 4 miles around my neighborhood. I joked that it was more of a run/talk than a run/walk. I saw a lot of my neighbors out and about and stopped to chat and catch up. Wednesday I set out to run 6 miles, but stopped after 5 when the oppressive heat and humidity took a toll on me. I felt really sick after that run. Ugh.

last hot run of the summer, I hope
A cold front blew through after that and on Saturday, I ran 4+ miles in nearly perfect running conditions. This was probably my best run in a long time. Sunday's long run of 10 miles was a bust. I don't know if I'm fighting illness but I felt off from the start. As I pressed on, I felt queasy and broke out into a cold sweat. At 2 miles in, I called it quits and walked home. It seemed the right thing to do. As much as I wanted one more long run before next weekend's ZOOMA half marathon, I'm confident I'll be fine with the training that I've done.

CrossFit
The cooler temperatures on Thursday made for a very tolerable strength session and bootcamp. For my strength workout, Coach Sammy Jo had me do high volume static presses, 50# x8 reps x 3 rounds alternating with Romanian Deadlifts. These are 2 of my favorite strength moves! She also had me do some hip stability work, hopping on one foot across the floor. There were tire flips too! Bootcamp was a couple rounds of AMRAPS. As always, I was fooled by the first set, thinking that it wasn't too hard--but then came the second round that just about did all of us in. We finished with 3 sprints: 400m, 250m, and 100m. I was happy that even though I was wiped out from the AMRAPS, I had enough in the tank to do those sprints. I just love what we are doing at the box!

Yoga
I only did one yoga class this week, Reset and Recharge Yoga Class from Erin at Five Parks Yoga. This was a new class that she uploaded in honor of Labor Day. It's a really good class that covers all the bases. She has some other new classes that she recently uploaded and I'm looking forward to trying them.

  1. I always did okay with my boys going off to school. It's good he's close--you can visit him any time, and he will likely come home fairly often. Sorry you had a bad run today. You'll do fine next weekend. Can't wait to hear all about it!

    1. I'm not worried about next weekend--even though my training has been kind of haphazard, I think it should be fine.

  2. I had a rough time when my son left for school, but I got used to the quiet pretty quickly. Now I'm bracing myself for when he graduates from grad school and gets his own place, because I have enjoyed having him home for months over the summer. We got the first round of rain this weekend and it's been one downpour after another.

  3. I promise that you'll adjust to your new normal, and as your children move on, each visit will become even sweeter. Speaking of which, our son who was in Chicago (now NJ) is going to be visiting for a few days this week! I'm a happy mama!

    Thanks for the linkup!

  4. I so wish this nice cool air would stick around for Zooma. Funny how dogs know exactly who's missing and adjust their behavior accordingly. I don't even wanna think about college here yet.

    1. It's so weird, though, we just FaceTimed with him and Cocoa couldn't have cared less. LOL

  5. It definitely felt like an odd week...I appreciate having Monday off for Labor Day, but the 4-day week always messes with my head. Throw in a few achy glutes and general unexpected exhaustion and it was really an out-of-body (and mind) experience. Whew...glad it's over LOL

  6. We had rain this whole weekend, but before that it was still really hot and humid. I think summer weather will linger here for a bit longer. It sounds like most of your workouts went well this week- I hope you're not getting sick!

  7. Look at you with that tyre - wow! I'm sorry you had sad times - my best friend and her husband has just dropped one twin off at their university and now it's the other one going next week - so sad!

Sorry about the crappy run, too. It's difficult at the moment with the weather conditions varying daily, isn't it. Hope you shake off whatever it is. And thank you for hosting the linkup, as always!

  8. We had similar weather this week and I was very happy for the cold front that came through this weekend. But it also rained all weekend so that was crappy :(

Thanks for the reminder - I need to enter your giveaway!

  10. When my oldest left for boot camp, I wasn't quite sure what to feel. I was definitely melancholy because things were different at home but I was excited for the prospects for her. Plus, not to be crass, I was thankful that there was going to be someone else teaching her discipline because she was clearly not listening to me. (BTW, same daughter that's causing me grief now. *sigh*) But yeah, it's a surreal feeling when one of your baby birds leaves the nest.

This weather, though. I'm over it all. Over it, I say!

  11. I hope you feel better on your next run. I was dealing with crud this week and people are starting to get sick at work. So it begins, right? I hope Cocoa adjusts too. I know whenever I started school, our family cat would miss me during the first week. He was so used to me being home most of the day on summer break.

  12. I saw your IG story about the sun earlier. I wonder if that was the run you were talking about!

Is your son's college close enough that he can come home for some weekends or will he be gone till there is a break?

  14. I hope it's just a passing thing and you'll be back to normal this week. Our temps cooled off so much this weekend. I wasn't prepare for 53 degrees when I set out for my run. But I warmed up quickly so it was all good.

  20. I'm sorry you were feeling so low last week - I know your son misses you too!

The weather has just been crazy...super hot and humid days and now it's downright chilly! Of course they still keep the air on at work below 70 degrees...I'm freezing!

Will have to make my way to your giveaway!

  21. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bit of a rough week. Change is always hard, especially when somebody that we love isn't with us at home anymore. I too am more than ready for the heat to finally bid us farewell for the summer. It has more than overstayed its welcome.

  23. I hope that you're feeling better now. I know you definitely don't need those 10 miles so no worries there.

I am loving the cooler temps. But also hoping this AC unit (they're working on it right now) actually works because it won't stay this cool too long and I'm still recovering from some major sleep deprivation from last week.

  25. I'm trying to adjust to my new norm too without my son around - takes time I guess, right? Why don't we live closer so we could hang out and commiserate!?!

Sorry Sunday's run was tough - hope you're feeling better soon!

  26. I hope Cocoa and you adjust! Last week, my husband was out of town for just a couple days and the dogs were distraught. They don't understand any change and it's hard for them! Even if summer is over, fall in the Midwest is the absolute best. Good luck at Zooma - I hope it goes well and you enjoy the race!

  27. And on the other side of the coin, winter in the Southeast is so very short. It feels like it's over before it even begins. I hope you and Cocoa are feeling better soon. I can't even imagine how hard it must be.

Sorry your last run wasn't fabulous, but best of luck at ZOOMA. I'm considering running our local one this year. There was a course change, and that will be a positive thing.
