How to Be A Runner

In the very back of the last couple of issues of Runner's World, there has been a recurring feature called How to Be a Runner. "Regular runners", people like you and me, select their preferences of all things running from a list. I kind of love stuff like this. I'm heading out of town to run a race as we speak and I thought this would be the perfect lazy blogger post for a Friday.

Feel free to copy and paste your own answers!

Let me explain:
1- While I no longer run marathons, I still prefer long, slow distances over short, fast races.
2- Not a carb gal, I like my fruit in smoothie form. But I'll take a banana over a bagel any day.
3- Sadly, my PR days are behind me. My new mantra: finishing is winning.
4- I'd rather drink my Tailwind than anything. But gel>chew.
5- Don't worry, I still love my post-race beer. But coffee is my preworkout!
6- Daps=a high five kind of greeting that I like to do during a race when I see someone I know. I'm a hugger off the road.

What say you? LSD or short distances? Bagels or bananas? Gels or chews or neither? Do you Dap other runners?

I'm linking up with Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness! Have a great weekend.

  1. I truly enjoy all distances -- that I've tried, anyway. They all have their own challenges. I'm definitely #teamcarbs but both bagels & bananas have their places. Chews > gels. I actually do like gels, but I prefer to take in a little every mile than a lot all at once.

    1. That’s why I like Tailwind.. I can sip every couple of minutes.

  2. Can I have coffee and beer? Those are pretty much the only beverages I drink beyond water. But definitely coffee before a run and beer after. The Midwest is changing me and suddenly I'm preferring the shoe store over online (if they have my size), frostbite over the treadmill, and tall socks over low socks. Happy Friday!

  3. I just wrote a post that will be published next week. I am going to focus on shorter stuff, at least for the time being. Longer runs hurt my hip too much, but I can run for an hour or so pain-free. Thanks for publishing the list. I stopped getting RW this fall, and I kind of miss it. I'm with you on the low socks and running by feel, but I like listening to my inner voices better than headphones! :)

  4. I am so not up with the "hip" thing to do these days. I didnt realize anyone past Middle School "dabbed". Unless I'm thinking of something else..haha.
Thanks for linking up with us!

  5. What a fun idea! I just may have to use it for my next lazy day post. You and I run so much alike! Except tall socks And I’m trying to get better at incorporating a warmup.

  6. We are in agreement on most of these, except I cannot do either coffee or beer (before or after LOL)

  7. Most of my answers are the same as yours except that I am kind of a group bagel runner :) Have a great time this weekend

  8. I think I agree with almost all yours. Like bananas but too lazy to make smoothies.

I prefer to run in the morning and run better in the morning but with work, it's after unfortunately.

  9. For me: marathon, morning, group, banana, feel, distance, stride, finish (PRs are LONG gone!), Sunglasses, road, wave, cool down, heel, chew, lead, push, treadmill (but I like cold, too!), t-shirt, both kinds of socks, coffee, downhill, headphones, online, daps, naked. I love how there are so many variables ;)

  10. I'd have to go with "both" for a lot of these! I like LSD on trails but short distances on the road.

  11. My answers were almost all the same as yours! Differences: Sunglasses, chews (Hammer Perpetuem chews are my new favorite) and heat exhaustion because I never get frostbite in California or Hawaii, but I don't even own a treadmill.

Have a great race this weekend!

  12. Oh how I wish I wasn't a carb gal :( I wish that bagels were a superfood, lol.
I also think that my PR days are behind me, but I do think that I can be a stronger runner so that's why I'm going to increase my strength training this year.

  13. Love this! Marathons, gels, bananas AND bagels but really truly hot cross buns ...

  14. I went through the list and have the exact same answers! Two peas in a pod. Enjoy your race this weekend! Can't wait to hear all about it. Safe travels!

  15. Lately I'm all about the slow short distance LOL. And I'm coffee over beer most days - love a good beer, but my body has decided that my limit is 1. Period. And I'm all about my inner voices if I'm outside running. I only use entertainment on the treadmill.

    1. Oh, that’s tough when the body decides it doesn’t like much alcohol anymore!

  16. tough - not sure if I'm a short or long distance gal. if I'm racing then my favorite distance is actually a 10 mile or Half.

definitely a bagel. toasted please. with peanut butter :D

while I would love to break through my PR's, since late 2015 and then after my operation in 2016 I'm a finishing is winning person.

coffee or beer? no, please don't make me choose. Obviously I don't drink beer before I run!

I'm a hugger. Not during the run but I generally hug runners i know. I'll be sure to dap you though if I ever see you in person (not really, you'll likely be ninja-hugged).

    1. I like hugs, but when I’m moving the dap is as good as it gets.

  17. Long and slow is definitely my jam now! PR days were fun but I don't have the motivation to do the work to get those PRs anymore. Love love love my beer but first thing in the morning it's coffee time!

  18. Those quizzes are fun, and thought provoking! I'd say I'm not much of a 5K sprinter any more (or maybe wasn't much before!), but I think the "mid" distance is more my thing - half marathons. I am training for my first marathon in a few years and the long runs are feeling a bit looming (even though I'm only looking at them on my calendar right now). Will I be able to finish the plan?? I'm a fan of iced coffee, not hot. I'm glad you explained what Daps are. I'm a "dapper" . LOL

  19. Watermelon > bananas . bagel>
Even if I'm well hydrated, I'm still too dry at run's end to eat a bagel.
I need to catch up on my RWs and read these
