Coffee Talk

It's the start of a new month and that means it's time to sit down for a cup of coffee! I don't know about you, but I so enjoy my morning coffee with a splash half and half. How do you take your coffee? Let's chat!

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you about my oldest's and my night out last weekend. The nurse I work with is dating a guitarist in a heavy metal band and she asked me if I wanted to join her at his gig. I mentioned it to my son and he was interested. The band went on at 11 pm, which is way past my bedtime but the crowd was so interesting that I had no trouble staying awake. Plus, it got LOUD! We had a great night out. There's something to be said about having grown children that you can hang out with!

If we were having coffee, I'd talk to you about this battle I'm having with my disappearing waistline. I've never had to watch my weight, but suddenly I've developed this extra layer around my midsection. I call it the "menopot". It's really frustrating for me! I mean, it's not like I don't work out or anything. Plus, I really do eat well. Do I have to work out more? Eat less? Give up chocolate? Give up wine? And let's not even talk about the hair that's appearing everywhere I don't want it to...

If we were having coffee, I'd ask you if you watched the Oscars and if you have seen any of the movies that were nominated. I saw A Star Was Born, Blackkklansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody. While they were all good, I wanted Blackkklansman to win. It was great. I hadn't seen Roma or Green Book, but both of them were favorites to win. But can we just gossip for a minute here? How about Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's duet?  Was anyone else thinking: "get a room"? Methinks there's a little more collaboration happening off the screen too. Gaga denies it...

Me too.
If we were having coffee, I'd also talk about some of the books I've read this month. Only 2 of the books I read were memorable: An Anonymous Girl, which was an intense psychological thriller and There, There, which is the story of 12 modern day American Indians who, for different reasons, are traveling to the Oakland Powwow. I couldn't put There, There down. Now I understand why it was nominated for so many book awards.  Now I've got a bunch of new running books to read--there are so many new releases coming out that this seems to be the year of the running book. Stay tuned for my reviews of those!

If we were having coffee, I'd ask you if you knew that Marcia was running the Tokyo Marathon this weekend. After that, she's running the London Marathon. And then she'll receive the coveted 6 pointed star for running all the world marathon majors. What a big, audacious, hairy running goal and to achieve something only about 1000 runners, and 260 Americans have done--well, knowing Marcia, I can't say I'm surprised but I am over the moon for her! Join me in wishing her the best of luck!

What would you tell me over coffee?  @deborahbrooks14 @got2run4me And good luck to @Teamarcia at #TokyoMarathon! #runchat

What would you tell me over coffee? Do you know where the expression "Turn it up to 11" comes from? Would you go see a band that started at 11 pm? Anyone else fighting the menopot? What movie did you want to win the Oscar? Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga? Any good books you'd recommend?

I'm linking up with Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness as well as Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date.

  1. Wow, I had no idea so people have done what Marcia is doing. I mean, I knew she was amazing, but WOW! Thanks for tooting her horn, because obviously she hasn't made a big point out of it, but she deserves all the accolades! I'd enjoy going out with my son, but I might need to take a nap first. ;-) The only Oscar movie I saw was Blackkklansman. And, yes, that performance was a bit *steamy*

    1. Marcia's pretty humble, so I'm happy to toot her horn for her! I mean, who else do we know who is doing this?

  2. I didn't watch the Oscars but I did watch some of the clips online. If I were Bradley Cooper's girlfriend I would have been super uncomfortable watching his performance with Lady Gaga!

I'm so excited for Marcia and can't wait to see all of her photos from Tokyo!

  3. I actually really loved Green Book & am happy it won. Menopot -- well, I probably had that before menopause. I think it's more menoroll, actually.

I had no idea that so few Americans had run the Marathon Majors! I was already really excited for her. :)

I do believe Lady Gaga when she said it was acting, she just broke up with her fiance not long ago. OTOH, more than one onscreen romance has blossomed into RL (although they rarely last).

11 pm is way past my bedtime -- I have been found up later than that, but I would probably pass on a heavy metal band.

    2. Oh trust me, 11 pm is way past my bedtime too but it was worth the loss of sleep!

  4. Hanging out w your older kids is fun! I am kind of in love w Bradley and I was swooning watching them. I do think it's acting though. I hear you on the menopot it's just ridiculous none of my real clothes fit. Thank god for yoga pants and athliesure

  5. Yep, turn it goes up to 11 is from "This Is Spinal Tap." It only goes up to 10. Mine goes to 11.

Lady Gaga says, "Acting!" Every step, every moved planned by Bradley Cooper. Check out her interview with Jimmy Kimmel. The Lady is fascinating. Love her. "A Star Is Born" is the only movie I saw so I can't judge but I loved it. I, who never goes "to the show," saw it twice, once with a friend and then with my beloved daughter-in-law.

There is a special joy in life in socializing, as adults and as friends, with one's grown children. So happy for you. Late night and loud music notwithstanding.

When I was running I lost a lot of weight, 11 lbs. off a 126 lb. 5'7" in frame. Too much, actually. When I had to stop running it all came back with a two pound surplus. Way past menopause but senior citizenship does bring its gift of body shifting. I've made my Peace with it.

Best wishes to Marcia. I'm sure you'll let us know when she succeeds in her quest.

    1. I loved A Star is Born but compared to some of the other movies that were nominated, it just couldn't stand up.

  6. LOL. "Get a room"
I haven't seen the movie, but couldn't miss those two. Chemistry can be electric

My reading was odd this month too. Trying to finish the Phil Hewitt for Runners' Bookshelf but I keep putting it down and don't feel compelled when I'm not on the train. I read Black KKlansman but haven't seen the movie. Or any in about five years. Had planned to see Star with a friend last fall but only showing was too late so we went bowling.

  7. I've only seen A Star is Born (and I loved it). I read a while back that Bradley Cooper was very nervous about singing at the Oscars because he's not a singer, and he'd be performing as himself vs his movie character. When they only looked at each other during the performance, I wondered if that might have been him just focusing on her and not the audience. Or they're an item...either way, that was one hell of a performance to witness!

    1. Wasn't it incredible? Maybe it was also to show the Academy what great actors they are!

  8. Love the pic of you and your handsome son! It's great that you can hang out and have fun together. Usually by 11, I have been sleeping for 2 hours! :)

I know what you mean about adding a few pounds around the middle. You look very slim in all the pictures I have seen of you, but I know how even just a few pounds can throw me off. I finally got back down to an acceptable weight, but, for the first time in my life, it was tough! Ugh!

    1. It's so weird to be battling weight-- I've never had a weight issue before. Well, except in college but blame the beer and late night pizza for that!

  9. That's cool that you got to hang out with your son! I haven't had a chance to hang out with my mom in a while, but I'm probably moving back home (or close to home) soon, so hopefully I'll be able to spend more time with my family again.

  10. I actually finally watched the A star is Born the night of the Oscar's and I thought it was a excellent movie. Can't two actors be really good at their job together? They had a great performance!

  11. I've been working towards my six stars for 3 years now - I just have London left! I love your book reviews, I am going to suggest There, There for my book club at our next meeting. I agree that it's hard to keep up. DO you listen to audiobooks at all? That's the only way I seem to find time to finish all the books I want to!

    1. I don't listen to audiobooks. I like to read and digest the book at my own pace. It would be easier to read more if I did it tho!

  12. The menopot is real around here, too. Instead of new hair, I now have a growing bald spot on the back of my head. 11 pm is way past my bed time... unless it's insomnia week, then all bets are off.

  13. I watched the Oscars but haven't seen any of the movies yet. That was quite the performance between Bradley & Gaga!

Don't even get me started on the menopot!

I had no idea that so few people have achieved the 6 stars! Marcia really is amazing! I'm so excited for her!!

  14. Yeah, Bradley and Gaga...I'm not convinced it was acting LOL They do have amazing chemistry together.

  15. I’m super excited for Marcia and a tiny bit envious too but Tokyo is just a pipe dream for me until I can really beat around the marathon course under 5 hours. I am sending good vibes that she manages with too much stress from starting in a later corral!

I’ve always had a bit of a pot belly and I’ve been quite overweight a few times in my life but I get what you are saying! My little pot is definitely worse and hello it’s not like I’m not trying! It seems so unfair! First all the BS with having periods for 40 years and the the BS of menopause. I’m so over it yet my body is not ...

I don’t go to many movies and I hardly have time to read. I wish I had time for both!! I’m going to read Deena Kastor’s book for sure during my week at home recovering from surgery.

I would go see a band at 11pm if I had a nap during the day haha!

No idea where turn it up to 11 comes from!

    1. You've never seen This is Spinal Tap? You should watch it while you're recovering from surgery! It's a parody of a 80s hair band. Hilarious.

  16. I can't wait till andrew is old enough to go to see some good metal concerts with me. He did plenty in my belly back in the day! The first time I felt him move was at a Chris Cornell concert. Bittersweet right?

    1. Oh, so bittersweet. I wonder what your little guy will be listening to?

  17. Spinal Tap! Love that film. And meno-hair, for sure. Ugh. I keep meaning to look into laser treatment before it all goes grey. TMI, TMI.

And no, I won't go and see a band that's on at 11, it's just too late and I will fall asleep!

  18. I'm glad you and your son had a fun time at the concert! You must be a pretty cool mom :)

I haven't seen BlackKKKlansman but it looks so good! I heard a lot of controversy about Green Book though I haven't seen that one.

There, There was amazing! Such a great story, very sad, but really eye-opening. I've love to know what running books you're looking into. I am about to start reading North by Scott Jurek. I'm looking forward to it!

And yay Marcia! Such an accomplishment!
