Coffee Talk

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

Let's catch up over coffee! What are you having? Today I'm having a local roast, Granville, from Metropolis Coffee. We used to live on Granville when we lived in Chicago, so I just couldn't pass this one up! I learned that Metropolis has opened a cafe in Edgewater, right down the street from our old apartment building. Such good memories and every time I have a cup of this delicious blend, it takes me back. What a great neighborhood!

Anyway, I've got my usual GLG collagen and a splash of half and half to make everything just right!

So what would you tell me over coffee?

If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that I've been continuing my quest of purging my house of clutter. This time, I've been tackling the basement, which was the boys' playroom. My intent is to turn it into my workout room. A few years ago, I got rid of the toys. This time, I pulled all the books and the DVDs, with the intent to donate them to the library. When I saw what I had, I posted in our neighborhood FB group. Fortunately, a few moms helped reduce my load. I also found a 'coupon book' that my youngest had made for me years ago as a Mother's Day gift. I plan on redeeming this coupon asap.

Speaking of the library, If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that when I took the books to the library, I was recruited to volunteer at the library book sale, lol. I'm not quite sure how it happened, but the next thing I knew, I was giving the coordinator my contact information. I don't think I'd mind doing this at all. Actually, it might be my dream come true! Surrounded by books?

If we were having coffee... I'd whine to you about the ongoing computer issues I'm having at work. Suffice it to say I seem to open a ticket every time I'm there for one problem or another. They even gave me a brand new laptop, but the problems continue. It all came to a head one morning when I couldn't connect to the internet, even though no one else in my pod was having problems. I had a full schedule of patients to see and one was in a room ready to go. When I called IT, it sounded like I woke the technician up. She asked me if I tried rebooting it.

If we were having coffee... I'd tell you that when I went to the car wash last week, I was told I had a credit and would I like the Ultimate Wash? I had no idea what this was, but sure, ok! Then I waited. It seemed like everyone was getting an Ultimate Wash. When it was my turn, my car got the works including the rainbow-colored soap! Armor-all on the tires! Can I say what a nice surprise this was?

If we were having coffee... I'd talk with you about my disgust and dismay over SCOTUS' decision to overturn Roe v Wade. Remember, it's not really about abortion. It's about women's rights. We were just celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX last week. I'm old enough to remember both decisions. It makes me sad that a conservative minority has taken away hard-fought rights for women.

What would you tell me over coffee? Is anyone else purging their grown children's stuff? Do you do any volunteering? Any good IT stories to share? Have you ever gotten a surprise free service?

I'm linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday:  DarleneMichelleReneeJenn, and Zenaida.

  1. I keep forgetting that you used to live in Chicago. Years ago I lived up north and really loved it. I originally wanted to live in one of the "cool" neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or Lakeview but never did it. Oh well. So many things to say about SCOTUS. I also agree that it is more than just abortion though obviously many people do not see it that way. Sigh. Did everything work out with your computer?

    1. I loved our neighborhood in Edgewater, but in my 20s, I wanted to live in one of the 'cool' neighborhoods too! Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't!

And yes, everything did work out with my computer. Sort of...

  2. yes, I am also on a mission to get rid of some stuff around here. My son is now back home again w all of his stuff! They gave me a gift for mother's day which turns a bunch of your paper mementos into digital assets. Now I just need to go through the boxes and do it.

    1. That sounds like a great gift! But then it's digital clutter, am I right? :p

  3. Good reminder. I have a coupon for a free car wash.

Yes. I keep purging but there always seems to be more.

My dream retirement job is to work in a bookstore or library... heavenly.

  4. Oh yes! You must redeem that coupon pronto! Haha! All the stuff went out when our basement flooded. Talk about a silver lining. I did come across a box that was the contents of my old kitchen junk drawer the other day and I found more than a few gift cards that I am redeeming. Don't even let me start on SCOTUS.

  5. I hope that coupon doesn't have an expiration date! When you get that basement cleared out you can have an awesome home gym- that's great motivation.
Yes, SCOTUS... so much to say. But since we agree on this issue there's no point ranting and raving about the same things over and over again. You summed it up perfectly- it's not about abortion, it's about women's rights. Sigh!

  6. Aww I love the coupon :) I'm knee-deep in purging my boys' stuff right now and I swear it is just endless LOL

I have so much to say about SCOTUS I just don't even know where to begin.... sigh.

    1. We have so much stuff--so I'm purging it in stages. It's so hard!

  7. I'm enjoying a cool matcha latte made with homemade nutmilk at the moment. Yummy! It's gonna be a hot one today!

We'll be married 37 years in Oct. We only had a basement in our very first home (a condo) and we only lived there 7 years. So that may be a good thing.

I've been donating some of my books to the free library at the bike path I run at. I stopped to look this week & a few them have actually been taken!

    1. My neighbor offered me her free little library, but I had so much! Maybe next time.

  8. I'm not a mum, but I think I would have shed a few tears while clearing out that basement with all the books and DVDs. And then that little coupon! Oh my!
I'm constantly in purge mode. Although we live a very minimalist life style (our apartment looks empty and visitors always ask us where we "put stuff") I'm always surprised how much there is to throw away.

    1. I feel like you get me! Yes, it's pretty tough to get started, but actually once I get going, I feel motivated.

  9. I'm drinking Orange Creamsicle coffee from our local shop. The first time I brewed it, the flavor just wasn't there. Second time, I used "bold" brew on my coffee maker and it changed everything! I have to plan ahead because it takes more than twice as long, but completely worth it.
I did a kitchen cabinet purge in April and got rid of so much stuff. I didn't need 3 crockpots or 10 casserole dishes, along with so many pots and pans. The Goodwill nearby was happy!

    1. We did a kitchen purge not too long ago! That definitely helped.

  10. Oh, I always have IT issues at work. It seems like I have to reboot (via the IT guy's daily recommendation whenever I call him). Then, it takes forever for everything to update and return to my desktop. He keeps telling me he's "working on" getting me a new computer. Meanwhile, my purging project, at home, is ongoing.

    1. We moved to a new 'pod' in our building yesterday. It was my day off and I was dreading what awaited me. But our IT guy got us all squared away. Today was uneventful and can I just say that is all I could hope for?

  11. Oh the IT stuff is so frustrating! I had a coworker who every time he came in the office he had issues logging in to the network, it was ridiculous!

So funny that you have those coupons...I wonder what they'd think if you cashed them in?!

  12. IT issues are the worst. And I am all about logging tickets these days since our project went live at the beginning of June. Of course half the stuff doesn't work *rolls eyes* but hey as long as you can tell investors how great it went...

As you know I volunteer a lot but it's pretty much at parkrun. I also volunteer now for a local international women's networking organisation. And I volunteered to help with *anything* for the several hundred Ukrainian refugees that have arrived here in my city, but so far the organisation hasn't called on me (Instead I've helped locate items for people, mostly clothes for kids, toiletries, blankets, carseats, that sort of thing, but that's through the int'l women's group). You volunteering surrounded by books does sound right up your alley!

    Definitely cash in that coupon.

  13. Not much left to purge of Darling Daughters stuff, we've done that pretty much from when she headed off to college; as she's never been back to live here since. That's not to say the basement doesn't need cleaning, purging, and organizing. It does, but mostly it's stuff from when my MIL passed, then my Mom, then my Dad. It's all stuff that's just there, not stuff we use, need or want. That, and my yarn and there's lots of that. Good luck with your IT stuff at work, sometimes even they can't figure out what the problems are. I'm so angry about Roe I could scream from the rooftops. Like you, I well remember both decisions and next they're going after climate change stuff, birth control pills and who knows what else. I wonder if we will ever get out from under all the problems trump and his gang have caused.

    1. It's hard to part with stuff from the past, even if we never look at it, isn't it? Slowly but surely, I'm making my way through it!

  14. hahah, that's awesome! I found an IOU I wrote to my brother from probablyyyy when I was around 5-6 and redeemed it last year for the $3 he owed me. That basement cleaning sounds like a great deal! ;P

That's an awesome surprise with the ultimate car wash! :] Birds have been targeting my car like no other so I've partially given up for now. (No luck in waiting for the next rain though because who knows when that will happen. ._.)

I'm with you on being completely disgusted with the SCOTUS decision. Definitely have been getting more questions about contraception + more requests for refills lately.

    1. How about the period apps? I've heard we should advise girls to keep those anonymous. What a terrible thing for all of us.

  15. Love the car wash and the coupon! That's so fun! I am sick to my stomach over this decision, and the domino effect of horror that has ensued. It's about equal rights, women's health, and privacy, and it's not going to stop here.

  16. LOL on that coupon - did it have an expiration date?

In view of their age and life circumstances, my daughter and daughter-in-law are more likely to need an abortion for medical reasons than for not wanting to have a child, and the thought that some states can value a fetus more than their life and health is really appalling. And don't get me re-started on the Supreme Court's originalist justification. Of course the views from a time when women couldn't own property wouldn't value a woman's autonomy.
