Oops! I Did it Again

Almost one year ago, I fell from the rope at CrossFit and broke my ankle and my foot. While I'm happy to have recovered completely from that injury--it could have been so much worse--I'm always nervous about falling again. Well, read on, my friends, because to quote Britney Spears, "Oops, I did it again". I'm grateful that this mishap was nothing serious and that I was able to finish my run and go to work. I woke up pretty sore on Thursday, so I decided not to tempt fate and canceled my strength session with SJ. I also figured that my body deserved a break.

And now that song is going through your head. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...

I'm looking into finding a padded running suit for myself. Do you think Brooks makes one?

I was doing such a good job of avoiding all the tree roots, too!

Running

We were up at the lake on Sunday, so I took my feet to the Lodi Marsh segment of the Ice Age Trail. The last time I ran there was in early May when it was chilly and muddy. This time the weather was sunny and pleasant. Save for the marsh itself, there was no mud. I had the trail mostly to myself except for a few flies who decided to accompany me on my way back. No bites but I did have a little PTSD from the last time I ran with them! I was better prepared this time, with spray and my hair covered, so they were more of an annoyance than anything. Their presence did keep me moving, though!

I ended up climbing down the bluff to get this view as the marsh was no longer accessible from the boardwalk. Too much foliage!

On Wednesday, I was up and out the door early to beat the heat. There were already quite a few cars at the trailhead when I arrived. As soon as I started running, I was passed by a large group of boys from the local high school. While I had originally planned on running 6-ish miles, I once again miscalculated my route. When I realized what I had done, I headed back, knowing that regardless, I was going to run at least 8 miles. While thinking about this and doing mental math, I caught my toe on a tree root and was unable to get my feet back underneath me. Once again, it was that feeling of time slowing down and knowing it was going to hurt. I landed on my hands and knees and slid forward into some brush. Ouch. I had a few scrapes but when I bent my fingers to push myself back up, I felt a sharp pain in my left pinky finger. Ouch again! I gathered myself because I had to resume my run. I was as far from my car as I could possibly be at that point. On the way back, that finger really bothered me. I was never so happy to see a run come to an end.

He's trying not to laugh at me, I'm certain...

I woke up Friday to a bluebird morning. I was still really sore from Wednesday's trail mishap, but I wanted to run in my new Brooks Ghost 14s. The first 'carbon neutral' shoe from Brooks, these Ghosts did not disappoint. They were as light and cushiony as I hoped. While my run didn't go as well as I wanted, I had the day off and I took my time playing in the sunshine. Even if it wasn't the run I expected, I believe there's no such thing as a bad run. Especially in the summer sunshine!

Turned my frown upside down!

CrossFit and Strength Training

I was so tired from my very active weekend that I considered not going to CrossFit on Monday. Oh, but there were deadlifts in the WOD! Silly me. It was a very large class so a few of us did the MetCon first and the strength portion second. Nothing like making it harder, lol. For the MetCon, we did a 14 min AMRAP: 8 calories on the assault bike, 12 deadlifts (95#), and 24 pushups. I did those pushups off a box. And let me tell you, those were the hardest part of the workout. I did 4 rounds of this. The strength portion was a 15 minute EMOM: 20 sec slamball hold, then 8 slamballs (30#), 20 sec hollow hold, then 8 single leg v-ups (I did atomic situps), and 20 overhead dumbbell hold, then 8 dumbbell (10#) presses. My arms were jelly at the end of class.

The math says I did 48 of these.

Waterskiing!

I was off on Friday and the hubs worked a half day, so we drove back up to the lake. My youngest drove out from Madison to meet us. The conditions were perfect for waterskiing! My youngest went first and after multiple attempts on my pretty pink ski, he was up and out of the wake. At first, he started out skiing like a wakeboarder but he eventually fixed his form and proud mom alert, oh, was it pretty! He took a break and I took a turn, enjoying this gorgeous day on the water. We each took another turn. He was pretty happy about this! And so was I.

Even though the weather wasn't great on Saturday, once the rain stopped in the afternoon, we went for a boat ride. It was cloudy and cool, but the water was calm, so I went again for a ski. I thought I would be cold, but I was comfortable. I'm so glad I took advantage of having the lake to ourselves!

In other news...

My hubs promised me a ride to Tumbled Rocks brewery, which is a brewpub in Baraboo, right at the south shore entrance to Devil's Lake State Park. We haven't been there since last summer, so I was really looking forward to it. We took the ferry across the Wisconsin River to get there. The beer was so good, the food was amazing, and after dinner, we sat outside on their patio to listen to a country music band. We had to take the ferry back, but the ferry was on the other side of the river, so I had time to get ice cream from the little shop at the ferry crossing. It was a perfect night!

Saturday was rainy and cool, and I had a planned rest day. Of course, if the sun was shining, there would have been some watersports. Anyhoo, we drove to Madison to meet my youngest for lunch at Brasserie V, which was near his house. He had been wanting to go there and it was an absolute gem! Very Belgian, with typical brasserie food on the menu and lots of Belgian beers to choose from. My hubs enjoyed the mussels of the day, served in a large pot with frites on the side. I didn't try them, but he and my son assured me that they were delicious. It's always good to see either of the boys, and this was a bonus!

Devil's Doorway Double IPA was delish!

How was your week? Are you accident prone? Has it been warm by you? Anyone else loving new shoes? Have you ever been to a brasserie? By the way, because this is a running blog, I'm not going to talk about the Roe v Wade reversal except to say I'm disgusted and disappointed.

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. Sounds like you're making the most of this summer weekend! Hooray for boat time! Knock wood, I've only fallen once and that was in mile 20 of a 20 miler. Like you, I caught my foot on a root and went down. It does feel like slow-motion and is such a shock to the system. Glad you're mostly ok!

  2. well if you have to have a running injury, the pinky finger seems like the spot! Love all the waterskiing photos. You look like a pro out there. Content idea: do a weekly series on getting started w trail running w super easy tips on choosing your Brooks shoes (part 1 ) and how to tie them. I learned that simple is better and just provide into and they will come. what do you think? You could do a whole series for the month of July w diff tips each week

  3. Thankfully, I have remained vertical for quite some time (in other words, no tumbles from my numerous stumbles, LOL)...but I have wayward pizza grease keeping me humble at the moment. Ouch on the finger!

    1. I haven't fallen for a long time either. I hope that is it for a while.

  4. Your heat usually takes a few days to arrive here, so yes, it is very warm here at the moment. Luckily my backyard is very shady & stays very pleasant even in the heat -- although Bandit quickly abandoned the upper deck yesterday when we had lunch out there -- it was just too hot for him, even with the shade of an umbrella.

Glad to hear the fall was nothing too serious, but still never fun at all. I actually tripped and feel at the garden last week! Not hurt at all, and luckily no one to really see me.

  5. Looking back, I think peri-menopause made me accident prone. I had more accidents during that time in my life. Was it the anxiety and insomnia? I hope so because that would mean those days are behind me. I have become more cautious and less concerned about pace. Hope that pinky feels better soon!

  6. I also didn't talk about Roe V. Wade but I'll second your opinion- I'm disgusted, disappointed... and worried.
I had a fall like that on the trail a while ago- it's very startling to suddenly find yourself on the ground! When it happened to me, some insect (or arachnid?) decided to bite me while I was on the ground (thanks a lot) so my biggest casualty was a huge, irritated bug bite. Hope your pinky feels better soon! It could have been worse... much worse.
That beer looks delicious! That whole day (and next day) sounds perfect- so nice that your son joined you.

You have a wonderful setup with your cabin at the lake. I know many people who would love to have that. It's nice to see that you enjoy every moment there and that your sons share your passion!

  13. Oh yes, I can definitely be my own worst enemy and quite the klutz. It sounds like your pinky injury must not have been too bad either since you were skiing over the weekend. You were lucky neither fall was serious this time around.
