Summertime Runfessions

It's that time of the month again, that time we all wait for...it's time to Runfess! Do you runfess? On the last Friday of every month, Marcia opens up the Runfessional so we can cleanse our soles. And our souls. Quite often it's both. As always, I have plenty to runfess, so let's get to it...

Summer's here and the running is easy! Ok, not so much, but I runfess that I've been keeping the mileage up in spite of the record high temperatures we're having here in the midwest. Is it all the racing I did in the spring? The strength training? Timing my runs to avoid the heat of the day? Taking it slower on the trails? I don't know but I'm really happy about it. A runner's gotta run, am I right?

Speaking of trails, I caught my toe on a tree root and fell on the trails this week. I was glad I had nothing more than scrapes and cuts. Oh, and I jacked up my pinky finger, but I'm monitoring that for now. I runfess though, that most importantly, I remembered to pause my Garmin after I fell.

I've said this before, but I swear there are just some men who can't keep their comments to themselves. Earlier this week during an early morning pool sesh, a man came up to me and told me that if I unhooked my tether, I would be able to swim across the pool. I poolfess... that I pretended I couldn't hear him, nodding and pointing to my earbuds.

I runfess... I can't help but be amused by a guy I see every Friday on the bike path. He's sort of shuffling his feet like he's trying to run. But what really has me baffled is the hand shaking movement that he does. So.many.questions.

Apparently, National Selfie Day took place this week Doesn't it seem like there's a day for everything? I'm really struggling with getting good selfies lately! Last week, one of my patients told me she's got an internship as a content creator and I joked that I could use her services. But in all seriousness, I runfess that I really could use her services.

What do you have to runfess? How are you holding up in the heat of summer? Has anyone else taken a tumble lately? What is it with these men and their comments? Any odd runners on your routes? How are your selfie skills? Do you use a content creator?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelle, Jenn, and Zenaida.

  1. Hope your finger is not broken. Now you know why i have to WALK on trails.

I don't change my running between the seasons. 3 miles 3x a weekend and a long run on the weekend (or a race.) The time varies according to the temps and daylight, though.

I'm not a fan of selfies (just your face). I mount my camera and get the whole body lol

    1. I don't think my finger is broken but it's so bruised and sore! Hopefully it's just a sprain.

  2. Ouch on the pinky! I still have a few scars, on my legs, from my journey into the brush at DAM to DSM (porta-potty long was TOO long). I didn't notice all the wayward branches that caught me, until afterwards when I saw blood running down my leg.

    1. Ha, that's pretty much a regular occurrence for me on my summer trail runs. I like to think of them as badges of honor!

  3. I always struggle in the summer heat. I had such a strong spring and now I am like, what happened? I am just going to keep moving forward! My selfies only come out if I use a tripod. I don't think my arms are long enough to do it otherwise or it looks like I have 3 chins :)

    1. I was reading about the new trend to do 0.5 selfies and that is what I did today!

  4. Oh, my selfie skills are TERRIBLE! That's why I post mostly running shots (and most of those are of questionable quality.) I don't know... I swear I used to be way more photogenic.
So I guess that guy was making a very unfunny joke? I would have pretended I couldn't hear him too!
I haven't fallen lately, but I've definitely fallen on the trails. I think it's just part of trail running, unfortunately. Glad you're okay and (more importantly) that you remembered to pause your Garmin!

    1. I totally get what you said about selfies! It's why I post running selfies too. Close ups are not my friend.

  5. Sorry about your fall! My fear of falling is one of the main reasons I haven't tried trail running - I just know that I'm not coordinated enough.

I love that you just pretended not to hear that guy :)

After all these years on IG taking a selfie still makes me self conscious.

    1. I'm sure you're coordinated enough but there are just SO MANY obstacles.

  6. We've been in the 90s this week but it's usually in the upper 50s to low 60s in the morning, so not bad. I've found a new trail by me that I'm enjoying. Key for me staying upright is trail shoes vs. road running shoes. The grip and stiffness make a big difference. There is a guy in my neighborhood who runs barefoot, carrying a single dumbbell.

    1. Ok, that's just weird. And yes, I agree with you about the shoes!

  7. I do hope your finger isn't broken but I guess someone can check it at work, right? And that man! Does he think you accidentally tied yourself to the pool and are wondering why you can't get across it?!!!

  8. I don't do a whole lot of selfies (obviously).

I see lots of people with odd running quirks, for lack of a better word. I mean, my form can be quirky but not like some of the things I see out on the paths!

That's great that your running is going strong! I definitely struggle more as it gets warmer.

    1. I think we all have our own quirks, but some people take it to a whole different level!

  9. Men or people in general commenting or even asking (when you are running or doing anything at all really) you to take your headphones off to ask you a question - *rolls eyes and sighs audibly* I AM RUNNING RIGHT NOW. Unless you are having a heart attack (which I can visibly see) please do not comment or ask me directions. Sheesh. AITA??

I think your content is just fine. I find it actually hilarious that it's called "creating content". Maybe that's the GenX in me? I mean isn't it just someone who spends too much time on social media? haha (because that's how I describe myself)

quirky runners make me smile. I love now to see my regular parkrunners on Saturday - I can totally see who is who from a distance just how they are moving their arms, head or body even!

    1. Quirky runners make me smile too, which is why I shared this runfession. Although the runner in me would love to help him out with his form...

  10. Not a runner so not doing the runfess, but what a cleaver idea to keep each other engaged. Sorry about your fall, hope you didn't break your finger. Things like that can take a while to heal and be very annoying. I've done less walking of late due to the temps, but have been trying to compensate with yard work and being active...that doesn't do much with regards to my fitbit though. Nor does my knitting, even though sometimes I break out in sweat...talking to myself and gesturing etc. Keep moving, that's the important thing. The weather is better today, so am shortly putting on my walking shoes and heading out.

    1. The weather was great until today...now it's 65 and drizzling. This is the summer of extremes.

  11. I hope your finger is feeling better. You know I have had my share of falls, on and off the trail, but never any real injuries thankfully. We’ll keep on keeping on…;-)

    1. Yep, I like to just keep moving! Thankfully, my finger is much better. Sore but pretty sure it's not broken. After last summer's mishap, I'll take it.

  13. Kim's post also made me think about my selfies. I then realized that that's what I wanted to write about in my post. :-) Regarding that man you see running, perhaps he has a condition in which he cannot control the hand movement? Love it that you are out there despite the weather!

  14. Listen. I am about done with men right now. The audacity. You should have heard the one guy the other night at a meeting. Sometimes, I forget to fix my face, and I know this was one of those times. I wonder if the person you saw running has a neurological or other medical condition.
