Good For the Ego

All things considered, turning 60 wasn't so bad. I get it, it's 'just' a number, but it's the whole idea of that number! Nothing changed for me except that I'm in a new age group. I'm still running and even ran a speedy 6 on Friday. It was just what I needed!

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: Ice Age Trail Run 9 miles
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: pool running
Wednesday: trail run 7 miles
Thursday: Strength training with SJ
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: Ice Age Trail Run 8.5 miles

Running

We were up at the lake on Sunday and I took my legs to the Gibraltar Segment of the IAT. I planned on what I hoped would be 10 miles, but end to end, it was 9 miles. Still, it was a hard run with 1600 ft of climbing, so that has to count for something! It was a gorgeous morning, with temperatures in the 60s. The sun was just coming up when I started and I mostly had the trails to myself.

Lake Wisconsin

Wednesday was my birthday and I had a plan to run 6 symbolic miles at my favorite local trails. It was 77 degrees and 1,000% humidity at 8am, so I knew it was going to be slow. It was but I didn't mind. Of course, my runner's math was wrong and I finished up just under 7 miles. Close enough, am I right?

Friday morning was cool and crisp--it was 47 degrees when I headed out the door for my run. I wore my new Brooks Run Visible long tights and thought maybe I was being dramatic, but I really wished I had worn gloves! The conditions were perfect for running and I enjoyed an evenly paced run that was faster than I had been running since spring! In spite of the cloud cover, I saw a pretty sunrise. I also saw a hawk swoop down for a squirrel that barely got away!

Because my son had a rugby game on Saturday, the hubs and I took a ride up to the lake on Friday night. When one is in Wisco, one runs on the IAT, and this weekend, I took my shoes to the Lodi Marsh segment. It was another cool morning and everything was wet from the rain overnight. I didn't get as much vert as at the Gibraltar Segment, but 1200 ft is 1200 ft and my hamstrings were complaining. There were signs of fall, too, with fallen leaves covering the trail and foliage changing color. No flies chasing me was definitely a win and I felt strong on this run!

CrossFit/Strength Training

Monday's WOD was a spicy one! It was another hot and humid morning and the class was full, so I chose to work in the back of the gym. I had the space to myself and a fan too. The strength portion was a Tabata: push ups ( I did a total of 40) and KBS (I did 64 total at 25#). The MetCon was 4 rounds for time: 75 double under (I did 100 singles), 20 Clean and Jerk (I did 15 at 35#), and a 500m row (I did 400m runs). I didn't time it, but it took me close to 30 minutes to finish this one. I felt really queasy after and was drenched in sweat, so I hung out for about 15 minutes to recover. I had a lot of company for that!

On Thursday, SJ gave me a choice of a fun workout with the tire and the sled OR work on my bench press 5 RM benchmark. My legs were just trashed from the week and I actually wanted to bench, so that's what we did. While we are working on 5 RM for the 3 lifts (back squat, deadlift, and bench press), I do want to test my 1 RM when we are done. She told me that is on the plan. It will be interesting with this different way of strength training. When all was said and done, I maxed at 72.5# for 5 bench presses. We were both happy with this. After that, I worked on pistol squats to a box, a hip flexor exercise, and those situps on a bench, doing 3 rounds.  Pistols have always been hard for me and this was the first time that I actually felt like I was doing them correctly. After a few corrections by SJ, that is...

Best Day Ever

I shared above that I got a second IAT run in on Saturday. But wait! There's more! After I finished my run, we packed up the car and drove to Madison to watch my Badger play rugby. Matthew scored an exciting try towards the end of the game, but it wasn't enough to beat Illinois. He said it was a good game and really, isn't that all that matters?

When the game was over, we drove back home, showered and changed, and got on the train downtown for dinner! My oldest son's girlfriend is an incredibly thoughtful person and planned a night out for my birthday and our anniversary. Dinner was at an Italian restaurant, Formento's, in Fulton Market. The food was good, and the company--the best! On the was back to the train, we all stopped at a bar for a nightcap. Mike and I headed home, leaving the 4 of them to enjoy the rest of the night out. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my guys together!

How was your week? Did it cool off by you? Anything fun happening for you this weekend?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. Yes it has cooled off.

Not a fan esp the dark mornings and early sunsets.

I hope the 60s are your best running years. Best doesn't mean fastest.

    That family photo is awesome.

  3. What a fun family night out! Keep on busting those 60 stereotypes! It needs to be in the 20s before I even think about running in gloves. Haha!

  4. That sounds like the best birthday celebration ever. And you killed it with your runs and strength sessions this week- the perfect way to usher in your 60th. It's weird because 60 just SOUNDS so old- my husband is 62, and I still can't believe that. I guess we need to adjust our ideas of what 60 looks like! I'll be there in four years.

    1. That is exactly what I've been saying to people this week. 60 doesn't have mean we let ourselves fade away!

  6. It sounds like you had a fabulous birthday with your family - those are the best! I, too, love how close our two sons are and how much they enjoy spending time together. It makes my heart so happy.

I need gloves anytime the temperature drops into the 40's, but I can hold out a little longer in shorts. Everyone is so different in how our temperatures run.

    1. I can usually wear shorts until the temp dips below 50. I don't mind wearing tights, though, especially on the trails.

  7. What a great birthday celebration!
It cooled off for about a week, now we're looking at triple digits again - the price we pay to never deal with snow and ice. I drove up to Fresno to see my sister and her family. Her 7 month old grandson has everyone wrapped around his finger. I've always been the cool aunt and it's even more fun being the "great" aunt!

  13. We had a major cool-down here, starting late Wednesday afternoon, and I'm not happy with such a sudden change of seasons. It is what it is, though, and at least it wasn't snowing, LOL. Looks like a nice bday celebration with the family!
