Thankful for Runfessions!

It's the day after Thanksgiving, and I'm in my stretchy pants, ready to runfess. Every month on the last Friday, Marcia opens the runfessional, giving runners a chance to cleanse their soles and their souls. I'm always thankful for runfessions and there's really no penance. It's a win-win situation. It's also kind of fun, humbling, and entertaining. At least for me it is.

I runfess... Earlier this month, I was slogging along on a boring trail when ahem...nature called. I spied a porta-potty in the distance! It was like an oasis. Even better, the maintenance truck was pulling away and when I stepped inside, it was fresh and clean. Maybe I need to not hate on this trail so much? Maybe I need to be thankful for the people who clean the portapotties? Maybe I need to count my lucky stars that this isn't my job?

I runfess... earlier this month, I unknowingly left after our post-run coffee with one of the other women's car key fob! When we were at Starbucks, she left her key and wallet on the table. Thinking it was mine, I saw the key fob and put it in my bag. I was halfway home when she called me to ask if I'd seen her key fob. I opened my bag and DOH! there it was. So I turned around and went back, cursing myself the whole time. Another good reminder that I need to be more mindful.

I poolfess... on a recent visit to the pool for my weekly pool running session, I forgot my floatation belt in the car. I discovered it only after I was on the pool deck. It had snowed overnight, so there was no way I was going out to the car to get it. Instead, I used one of the pool's belts, but it didn't have a tether. The belt was super long, so I tied it to the ladder. But the belt kept loosening, forcing me to continually tighten it during the workout. The bottom line: I got it done, but this was definitely not a good way to start the day.

I runfess... with Covid booster #5 due for me, I tried so hard to schedule it so it wouldn't interfere with my running schedule. Runners, you get me? I got the shot on Saturday morning, hoping that any reaction would take place in the afternoon and I'd be good to go for my run on Sunday. Well, you know what they say about plans, and yeah, I woke up in the middle of the night with chills and body aches. Listening to my body is never what I want to do, but yeah, I had to bail on that run.

She's a pretty good nurse

I runfess... that when my youngest son said he was in for a Thanksgiving morning Turkey Trot, I was skeptical. After all, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is considered "Blackout Wednesday". I'll let you do the interpretation of that. Thankfully, both my son and his friend were up and out the door with me by 7. They were great running companions and kept me moving when my legs wanted to quit. It was a great morning and I'll share more on my weekly rundown.

What do you have to runfess? Gotta love a clean porta-potty! Tell me something you absentmindedly did that had you scratching your head. Do you get distracted when your gear isn't right? Have you had a bad reaction to the Covid booster? Any Turkey Trot stories?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelle, Jenn, and Zenaida.

  1. How about heading to your car after a race and almost forgetting that you checked a bag (with you down jacket among other things).

Forgetting to put on a running bra there's too many layers to take off so you run with a regular bra...

Fortunately zero reactions to all 5 COVID shots. Hope it continues but I too schedule around runs and races.

That is so fun to run with your son... my stepson refuses (although he was a runner in HS). Maybe someday.

    1. This was the first time he agreed to run with me in a long time!! Both he and his buddy said they had fun. I loved running with them!

  2. I love that your son and his friend ran with you! I seem to be absentmindedly leaving my glasses in odd places, which is problematic cause I can't read a thing without them LOL

    1. See, that's why I have about 20 pairs everywhere in the house!

  3. You all had perfect weather for that trot! How fun to do it with your son! The most mindless thing I think I've ever done is put my carry-on thru the scanner at ORD and walk away without it. It wasn't until I was standing in the airport Starbucks line that it dawned on me. Doh! Knock wood, no reactions ever from the vaccine or booster. Not sure if that's bad or good.

  4. How fun that you had company for your turkey trot! I still need to get my booster. I'm spoiled because Kaiser is usually so easy to schedule online but for the covid booster the locations they offer are so far away and I know there's a much closer office. And then, of course, I forget to call. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  5. Wait- you came upon a freshly-cleaned porta potty out on the trail? Too good to be true! And, next time we don't want to go to work we can remind ourselves that there are definitely worse jobs.
I'm envious your son ran with you! My kids are astonished and horrified that we would pay money to get up super early on Thanksgiving to run a race- they were both still asleep when we got back yesterday. Meanwhile there were all these families running the race together- how do they do that?????

  6. LOL on the pool workout mishap! I would not have gone out in the cold in my bathing suit either! Hope you all had fun on your turkey trot. Glad you are feeling better.

  7. Well, I've had bad reactions to all of my Covid shots, much worse than the actual virus itself. I'm due for another booster (it's been 3+ months since I had the virus), but I'm procrastinating. Good job on the Trot! I ran with Barb, for the first time in ages. My body did not want to move at her speed, especially with the PT DOMS and recent shin splints (yeah, that was a fun combo!), but I was able to keep up with her and felt fine afterwards. Ha...a clean porta-potty is a gift from the running gods!

    1. My booster reaction was bad but it was done in 24 hours. Covid lasted 2 weeks for me, so I'll take the shot over getting sick again.

  8. So cool that your son and his friend joined your for the Turkey Trot! I'm sure your other son will join you next year. Soon this is going to be your family tradition.
Is that portapotty a permanent feature on your trail? Or just there because there's construction nearby? In Switzerland I sometimes pass portapotties, but they always belong to a construction site and are locked.

    1. I'm not sure that it will be a family tradition but I was happy to have them with me! There are fewer portapotties on the local trails in the winter, but there are a few year round ones. The woods, though, never have potties!

  9. Sorry you had a bad reaction to the booster. This was the first time I didn't (and my first Pfizer).

But yay for a clean portapotty & company at your race!

You know I am always losing things. Currently it's a pair of leggings . . . I had actually folded all the laundry and there was nothing in the laundry bags . . . I still haven't found it.

    1. I have the same issue with misplacing things--we're still looking for my spare keyfob for my car! I blame my husband but you know how that goes.
