January Runfessions

Here we are at the first Runfessions of 2023! Do you runfess? Every month, Marcia opens the runfessional to allow us all to cleanse our souls and soles. Oddly enough, I always have things to runfess. So let's get to it and let the absolution begin!

I poolrunfess... do you remember my 'fession from a few months ago?  About sharing the dive well with Mr. Drifter? Since then, I've caught him rolling his eyes and sneering at me whenever I step onto the pool deck. Well, guess what? It's not just me. Two other pool runners have joined me and the three of us tether next to each other along the wall. He sneers at them too. He does his drifting within inches of us, even though there is plenty of room for him in the dive well to do a whole lap next to the swimmers. Oh, and a gentle reminder: it's a public pool.

I runfess... that I actually considered not running the Frozen Gnome 10k this year. It's in January...it's cold...it's hilly...But they used my picture from last year for their FB cover photo and how could I not return? Wouldn't you have done it?

I runfess... that foot I broke 1 1/2 years ago has been talking to me lately. When I fell from the rope and fractured the proximal 5th metatarsal on my right foot, the orthopedic surgeon told me it never properly healed. On x-ray, it looks like there's no bone, but he thinks it is healed with a fibrous union. Me, knowing enough to be dangerous, thinks that I must have jarred it somehow. It doesn't hurt at all, even when I run, but it does sometimes remind me that it's there. Fingers (and toes) crossed that it's nothing.

I runfess... that after 8 years, I framed the Chicago Marathon poster that I picked up for free at the expo when I ran it in 2014. Why did I wait so long? I had nowhere to hang it! Now I have my new workout space in the boys' former playroom and I'm busy covering the walls with mementos. This was the year I ran my PR marathon, a race that brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. I think you'll agree that it was worth the wait! It's hanging in full view from my treadmill.

I runfess... that trying to upload videos to IG for Reels has been really glitchy lately, at least for me. This past week, I cropped a video and deleted the unwanted portion. Oddly enough, while the edited video was in my photos, the deleted video kept showing up in my Reels videos. I have no idea how that could even happen! I ended up scrapping the whole thing and using a different video. I think I need a content creator.

What do you have to runfess? What is the craziest reason you've signed up for a race? Any subtle niggles that you're ignoring? Do you have any mementos that spark joy? Do you know if they still hand out free souvenir posters at the Chicago Marathon? Any suggestions for my Reels issues?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelle, Jenn, and Zenaida.

  1. I'll bet you're glad that photo got you to return to the race!

I think anytime we have a serous injury, we're always really hypersensitive to any sensation in that area. Hopefully it's nothing.

Being in nature really sparks joy for me (even if I don't enjoy running in the cold, I'll bundle up to walk in it). It just takes so darn long to walk Bandit these days . .. . I dogwalkfess that some days when Bandit wants to turn around and go home early, I just keep on walking -- Mr. Judy is glad to go home (although he really needs the walk, too!).

    1. Yes, I loved that they shared my photo and it really made me want to come back!

  2. Gotta run the race if they used your photo! :) I do remember lots of territorial people when I used to swim at the club. What is with them? There are a few old injuries that I am still "aware" of on certain days. I think that is just the way it is. Ooh it would be nice to have a content creator!!

    1. I remember the territorial people at yoga too! How un-yoga of them.

  3. I have a lot of race posters that I'd planned to display in my little Sweat Den Down Under, but the wall space is really limited and awkward...so that project is still on the procrastination gig. But I just can't bear to part with them, especially the ones from Dam to Dam and the Bix, because the artwork is really cool and the races have so much sentimental value.

    1. I don't have any other posters and I have space for one more, so I am on the hunt!

  4. Swimmers might even be worse than cyclists, IMO. When I swam for tri training they were downright mean. I wish I'd have grabbed the posters from all the marathons I've done. My PR, 1st BQ race poster had an election theme and it was well, ugly. I tossed it right in the hotel room before we left. I guess it did not spark joy! Haha! Hope your foot is ok!

  5. I love that they used your photo for the race! You had to run it after that, right?!

I'm still waiting to hang my Chicago Marathon poster because I don't have a good spot to hang it. I think it's great to cover your workout space in things that bring you joy.

I hope your foot niggle turns out to be nothing.

  6. Yes of course with that great photo you had to run it. You have another from this year. Ii see this race again in your future.

I have quite a few mementos from races. I have a flyer of the course from NYCM. I've saved it. I should frame. Great idea. The only poster I have is from a LA half... it was not a good memory but I did save it.

    1. I wish more races gave out posters! I did have one from 2011 but it was ugly so I didn't frame it.

  7. Ha ha... i have nothing but niggles that I'm ignoring. There's my foot and my hamstring, and then this week there was a bonus niggle in my shin. I always say, if I wait till nothing hurts then I'll never run. I hope your foot is okay- maybe you just stepped down funny in your frozen gnome race. Which, by the way, I'm glad you ran and i'm sure you are too!
I love the framed poster- I'm sure that will motivate you if you're forced to get on the treadmill.

    1. I was thinking about all my niggles as I wrote this post. The foot is just the loudest niggle right now, lol

  8. Is the broken foot/ankle incident already 1.5 years ago?! Wow, time flies!
I guess it's good news that you don't feel it AFTER your run, or the next day. Fingers crossed, indeed!
I love that you have your own workout space now.
Our apartment in Cape Town still has barely any furniture - but we're thinking of buying a stationary bike and putting it in the (still empty) living room. Better than a couch!

    1. You are such outdoors people--would you even use an indoor bike?

  9. Exactly my thought! But road biking in South Africa is quite dangerous because of the reckless driving. Kai doesn't mind the stationary bike... me, not so sure!

  10. Great runfessions! How cool that you were in the race's advertisement. You're a star! That drifter at the pool...how annoying. Glad you have two other pool runners for support, and also so impressed how you've kept up with the pool running!

My broken ankle from 5 years ago still hurts sometimes, esp in the cold!

    1. The pool running takes the place of a run. I feel like it's working out well for me.

  11. I love that you were on the Facebook poster for the race! My friend Barinderjit gets on those a lot - the fact he's a Sikh guy with an orange turban and a big beard and the name Usingh Bolt on his t-shirt helps ... Another friend is cover girl on Women's Running this month so that's made a set! I've been having a glute/hamstring niggle recently: remembered that comes on when my swiss ball chair has gone down a bit, pumped it up, feel OK!
