The theme for this week was the heat and the humidity. With highs in the 90s and humidity in the 90s, it felt pretty miserable outside. I got up and out the door early for my runs, which helped a lot. As much as I look forward to summer, I don't love summer running.
Let's just agree that we all earned our showers this week!
Weekly Rundown
Sunday: run 5.5 mile
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: Yoga
Wednesday: trail run 7 miles
Thursday: CrossFit
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: waterskiing
July miles: 83
We were still up at the lake on Sunday, but the hubs was antsy to get home. The lake conditions were perfect for skiing...but it was a little cool in the morning and I wanted to get in a run. So I laced up and ran along the lake for a total of 5.5 miles. Even though it was really humid, I felt pretty good on this run, only stopping to walk when my HR got too high. There was a light, cool breeze, which helped keep me comfy. I was briefly entertained by a speed camera that clocked me at 9 mph. Or was it minutes per mile? And no, I didn't get to ski. Hopefully, we'll get back up there next weekend.
For Monday's CrossFit, the MetCon was the WOD. We warmed up for the workout which was for time: 800m run, 4 rounds of 12 hang power snatches (35#), 10 chin to bar (I did jumping pullup negatives), and 800m run. This took me 20:22. Disclaimer: it was 72F and 98% humidity. I don't think I've ever sweated so much in my life! We ended with a Tabata, 5 rounds each of hollow holds and supermans.
Even though I woke up at 4:30 on Tuesday, I decided to skip the pool and do yoga. After a week out of the office, I wanted to go in early to ensure my computer was charged and address all my messages. Doing that lowered my stress level and made my day go very smoothly!
I was up and out the door by 6 on Wednesday, hoping to beat the heat. Even with the 90% humidity, the 67F felt great. After dealing with the foliage and insects on the single tracks, I planned my run on the main trail. Of course, I did tuck into the woods on the single track a couple of times--just enough to get my fix of the woods. I also got a few mosquito bites, even though I thoroughly doused myself in repellent prior to the run. Overall, this run felt great and I even saw some deer resting in the woods!
Another steamy morning, another sweaty CrossFit workout. I was feeling unmotivated but this is when we really need to go! The strength portion of the workout was 5 x100m sled pushes. There are 3 sleds and 12 participants in the class, giving us time to catch our breath between each sled push. I struggled to catch my breath at the end of each push--but I wasn't alone. My hamstrings were also crying. The MetCon was 5 rounds of a 250m row, 8 devil's presses (12# each hand), and 12 situps. We had 20 minutes to complete this. I was done in 17:25. Still sweating!
Friday's run was another early start in an attempt to beat the impending heat. It was another coolish start--67F-but it was still very humid. The sun was just rising, and I was excited to catch a beautiful sunrise over the little lake that borders the bike path. On the way out, I had the path to myself and enjoyed a nicely paced run. The humidity started to take a toll and on my way back I had to stop multiple times to walk off my high heart rate. Overall, this was a decent run and a great start to what turned out to be a wild day at work.
We were on the road early Saturday morning to get to the lake. I wanted to get out on the water before all the other boats did so I could have a smooth ski. Our little bay was choppy so we drove to my favorite place to ski. The water was calm, but we did have to share it with another boat pulling a tube and a guy on a jet ski. I had a nice long ride, which made my heart happy!
Still sweating off the road too...
I haven't mentioned it before, but my husband has been having some health issues. On Father's Day, he hurt his back. We were up at the lake and his leg gave out when he got out of the boat. Since then he has fallen multiple times, including this week when he was up on a ladder at work and landed on his back. If you know me at all, you know I have been very aggressive at getting him what he needs before things get worse. I battled with his primary care doctor to get an MRI of his spine, which showed 3 herniated discs and severe narrowing of his lumbar spine. He has arthritis in his knees and due to the fall, most likely a torn meniscus in one. Currently, he's receiving physical therapy. My frustration is with the medical profession. His primary never called him with the MRI or x-ray results--I had to download them from the portal. I've done all the legwork trying to get him in to see specialists. He's seen an orthopedic surgeon for his knees, who basically told him to come back when he needs a knee replacement. He is going to see a spine specialist at Rush in Chicago this Friday, which is the one of the best places he could go. He asked me to find him a new primary and I did, a wonderful physician who works in the building where I practice. The hubs is not a complainer, but I told him he has to stop downplaying everything so that he gets the care he needs. I'm happy that his new primary will be taking over his care management from me-- this pediatric specialist! is feeling pretty overwhelmed! Not to mention very worried about him. Thank goodness for running and all my other activities. This week just about put me over the edge.
How was your week? Hot and sweaty? How are you getting your workouts/runs done? How are you staying cool?
Good Primary care is hard to come by! All the good Dr are not taking new patients and do t want to deal w insurance. I’m sorry to hear that your hubs is struggling w a bunch of issue but it sounds like he is in the right track w your help. Still sweating over here indeed! Even our morning temps are pretty warm and humid. Just doing what I can and not very motivated to run in this heat
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky I have connections!
DeleteSorry to hear about your husband's health issues. He's lucky to have you as an advocate!
ReplyDeleteMy first post-Europe run was blissful - 58 degrees. It's warmed back up, but our humidity is typically low. A quick dip in the pool when I get home is all I need to quickly lower my core temp.
All I can say is thank goodness for AC!
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your husband's problems. He is lucky to have you to get him care! That is so good you got him to see the right specialists and GP. It's enough for you to handle the worry!
ReplyDeleteYou had a very impressive week, in and out of the gym, with the humid weather! The Thursday CrossFit sounds exhausting! Here we finally had some really good weather and it looks like we'll continue having some decent temperatures which is worth celebrating!
It's supposed to cool down this week and I am looking forward to it.
DeleteOh yes, lots of sweating this week in Iowa as well. It is nice, though, when the temps in the 60's feel so cool (even with high humidity). Hope all goes well for the hubby with hew new primary and treatment.
ReplyDeleteThose early mornings are a lifesaver!
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your husband's health issues and your challenges with navigating the health care system. It's wild how even living in one of the most advanced countries everyone still has to be such an advocate for themselves. He's lucky to have you helping out! I hope he gets the care he needs.
ReplyDeleteGreat job staying active in that extreme weather! Gorgeous photo of the sunrise as well.
I can't help but wonder what happens with people who don't know how to navigate the system when they have a PCP who doesn't care?
DeleteSorry to hear about your husband's health issues, falls are always scary. Mine is really good at going to the doctor and managing his diabetes really well, which is a relief and long may it continue. Quite hot here for the UK at the moment, and humid - I managed a sort-of-run Tuesday because I was encouraging some very new runners at club, and then 2.5 whole miles this morning at 6.15!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back to running!
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your husband right now. It's so hard to navigate our healthcare system and can be so frustrating! It was very steamy this week here too, but for my runs I was usually out and about early enough that it was only in the 70s. 80-90 later in the day, but not while I was running!
ReplyDeleteGetting out early is definitely the key!
DeleteI'm so sorry for the stress and the problems your husband is having. I agree, we all need to be proactive and search out answers because things are sometimes bigger than they seem on the surface. I'm glad you are there to help out and lead him/find answers. I hope he gets hooked up with the right people to help him out!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've got him all situated--hopefully his new PCP will take over from here!
DeleteOh your poor husband- he must be in so much pain. I feel bad for him, and you! He's lucky to have you taking care of things.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had some great workouts in spite of the heat, and that sunrise photo is AMAZING! I hope you get your cooldown this week- and you can look forward to a permanent cooldown soon!
If he's in pain, I wouldn't know it, lol! He's really stoic. But I'm looking long term and hoping to avoid any disability.
DeleteYour husband is lucky he's married to a medical professional! I hope that he will soon be able to tackle the root cause. It's always such a worry if our partner or other close family member has a medical issue.
ReplyDeleteThat's smart of you to go in early to the office after a week off. I used to do the same. It feels so much better when you're on top of things!
I wish we had a sled at our Crossfit! It sounds like an effective workout!
The sled is great for posterior chain work. You can put weights on it too for more intensity.
DeleteOh, Wendy. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. He is lucky to have someone to help advocate for him to get him the care and treatment he needs. The medical profession has been so difficult for years and needs an overhaul. I have no idea what that would look like, but people need care!
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty disheartening to see how he was treated (or not!) by his PCP. Shame on him.
DeleteIt's been hot and sweaty here too. When I get back from my walks I'm drenched. Been drinking Gatorade to help and more water than normal. Love your socks by the way...so colorful. Sorry to hear about your hubby and glad to hear you've found a new Doc. Like in all professions not all Docs are good ones. It's good you pushed to get things done. Hope they get to the bottom of his problems. Looks like we're starting a cooler period starting today, think everyone needs some relief.
ReplyDeleteYes, enjoying some much cooler weather here too!
