This really is the best time of year to be a runner! Or is it fall? I love them both so much. As for all my complaining about the slow arrival of spring, I will grudgingly admit that these cooler temperatures have made for some great runs. It has also allowed me to really appreciate the arrival of all the blooms. I've made sure to get out early to soak up all the beauty and solitude that comes with being alone on the trails.
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Ice Age Trail Lodi Marsh segment 8.6 miles/1200 ft
Monday: Ice Age Trail Gibraltar Rock 3.2 miles/700 ft
Tuesday: Fluid running
Wednesday: Trail run 6.25 miles
Thursday: Strength Training
Friday: Run 6 miles
Saturday: rest
What a morning! I was on the trail by 6:45, hoping to beat the many people who were sure to be out for the holiday weekend. It was cool, but the bright sunshine kept me warm as I started up the hill that would take me into the woods. Spring has been a few weeks behind due to all the rain we've received this year, but it's here now! The wildflowers showed up in a big way, and I heard a lot of birds, just like I did last Wednesday on my 'home' trails. I only saw a few--I did see a bluebird and an eagle flying away with its prey. I also saw a deer-something I don't see very often on these trails.

This tree appendage reminded me of an elephant's trunk! And look at all those wild geraniums! |
I went down into the marsh, hoping to see marsh marigolds, but they are not blooming yet. It was still beautiful! The sound of the bubbling stream coming out of the bluff was like a balm to my soul. What a fantastic morning!

We were still up at the lake on Monday, and I couldn't pass up an opportunity to go up to Gibraltar Rock! It was another beautiful morning. I hiked to the top and soaked up the views while enjoying having the entire trail to myself! I made my way down the trail that runs along the back of the rock. The birds were singing loudly, and once again, my Merlin app was busy tracking them all. I hated for this run/hike to come to an end!

I was out the door early on Wednesday to try to beat the impending rain. When I arrived at the trailhead, it was sprinkling lightly, but after a couple of miles, it started to rain for real. I kept going with the goal of getting at least 6 miles. The raindrops were my soundtrack for this run. The woods were very quiet. I saw a few deer in the distance and the owl flying over the creek, but for the most part, it was just me and my thoughts. When I finished, I was soaked, but that didn't spoil my satisfaction with this beautiful run!

I was tired Friday morning when I headed out for my run, just slogging along. One of the fastest runners I know came up behind me and started running my pace. He asked if I was training for anything (no), and I found out that he is training for IM Lake Placid and IM Wisconsin. He was so excited about it that I couldn't help but feel excited too! After he split off to run with his training partners, I continued the positive momentum, running each mile faster than the last. Negative splits! I sure didn't expect the run to turn out like that!
Off the Road...
I received some fun mail this week--I won a giant prize package from Honey Stinger! It all was packed into a 12 liter Igloo cooler: 3 cases of Honey Stinger waffles and chews, a picnic blanket, soccer ball, water bottle, Goodr sunnies, and a bunch of fun swag. I did an unboxing on IG if you want to check it out! Cocoa even has a cameo appearance, lol. She has to be involved in everything!
On Saturday, I went to my family reunion. A little history: I grew up in a small town in northern Illinois. My grandfather was a dairy farmer, and when my dad and his brothers got married, they each received 3 acres of land to build their homes. My dad and 3 of his brothers built next door to each other. My dad's other brother built a home in town. I grew up living next door to my cousins, and they were my companions for most of my childhood. We all went to the same high school and there were 4 of us in the same grade with our lockers next to each other, flanked on either side by my 2 older cousins and my sister and younger cousin. Kinda crazy, right?
After high school, we all went our separate ways, seeing each other at weddings and funerals and occasional parties over the years. This was the first time we've all been together in probably 25 years, and it was really nice! In the past, family parties were pretty wild, but this was amazingly tame. We caught up on life. Everyone's kids and grandkids were there. But even though we hadn't seen each other for a long time, there was that connection...you know, when you see someone from your past and it's like you just saw them yesterday? That's how it felt.
I also loved introducing my boys to everyone and letting them hear us reminisce about growing up in the country, playing on the farm, and sharing our shenanigans. What a wonderful day. I didn't take any photos, but there were some old photos on the tables that we could take home. I've got this one of the 'cousins and my grandma. The year was probably 1979. See if you can find me!
Lastly...have you seen this app called Fake My Run? It allows you to create a route and generate a GPX file that you can upload to Strava. I found out about it in this NYT article. I know some people cheat on their runs, but who would go to the trouble of uploading a fake route to Strava? It's an interesting concept, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
How was your week? Have you seen anything interesting on your runs this week? How do you feel about running with someone who is much faster than you? What's the best thing you've ever won from an online giveaway?
My Mini Book Reviews for May are live on the blog! Be sure to check it out!
My thoughts on the Fake My Run app? Cheating on anything is wrong, period!
ReplyDeleteThat Wool Sower Gall Wasp egg case is quite pretty and very interesting - thanks for sharing that.
Congrats on your Honey Stinger haul!
I agree with you on cheaters--I'll never understand accepting praise when you know you're lying.
DeleteI saw another Wool Sower Gall Wasp case today--it had an oak leaf growing out of it. Just another fascinating thing found in nature!
I read about that Fake my Run thing! What a weird concept- who are you faking it for exactly? Its not like you can cheat your way into Boston with a strava run. So strange!
ReplyDeleteI love the history of your family and how wonderful to have had this reunion! What a heartwarming story.
I was really reluctant to go--it's been so long and you know how family can be. But this was just great! Family is always family. <3
DeleteOmg Fake My Run is so wild. I have never heard of that.
ReplyDeleteNice job with negative splits. You always get such great pics on your runs!
Thank you! I always warn people who run with me that I stop a lot for photos. I'm not training for anything, so it's fun to just do my own thing.
DeleteWHERE are you in that photo, Wendy? I thought you might be the little girl with the dog (or is it a cat?) on her lap - but then I remembered it was 1979, so you must’ve been around 15… and now I’m totally stumped! 😅
ReplyDeleteYour running is really on a roll right now - you should totally consider signing up for a race. I bet you’d surprise yourself in the best way.
Those Ice Age trails are just stunning. I love how much you appreciate them - it really comes through in your posts.
I would consider a 5k or a 10k but I'm definitely not in long distance race shape! I'm enjoying letting go on those pavement runs. So fun to run fast!
DeleteI'm behind the guy in the mustache, wearing the brown jacket. I was 17 when this photo was taken! Hard to believe it was that long ago because I'm not getting older... :p
used to more successful with giveaways in the past but now I rarely enter them.
ReplyDeleteLove your trail pics. It's been a while since I've been on them. That needs to change. Our weather too!! RAIN!!!!!
I run for me and I only post my races on Strava. Fake it?!
We're still cooler than normal but it sure has been great for running!
DeleteThat is an amazing prize package - wow!
ReplyDeleteLove the scenery from your trail runs — and the interesting flowers!
OMG on the Fake My Run — why ???
I couldn't believe I won such a great prize package!
DeleteWow, so much in this post. Those trail runs look so, so beautiful. And I loved the story of your childhood growing up with your cousins (I'm trying to think where you were- up near Wisconsin? I grew up in Highland Park, definitely not the country.) It kind of reminds me of the stories of my mom's childhood- she grew up in a small town in Wisconsin surrounded by lots and lots of cousins. Anyway, hearing your story gave me major midwest nostalgia vibes.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing prize to win! The best thing I ever won in a giveaway was a Garmin. That was years and years ago- I haven't won anything big in a long time.
I grew up in rural McHenry County--about 5 miles outside of McHenry and about 15 minutes south of the Wisconsin state line. We used to play in the woods behind my grandparents' farm and I think that is why I love the trails so much!
DeleteWhere did your mom grow up in Wisconsin?
Your family reunion sounds so nice! Looks like you had a great week of running and it looks like you finally have that fab weather for it. I usually get motivated in the fall but spring is also so nice while it lasts. I can’t imagine why someone would upload a fake route and post it nonetheless. I read about a story once where a woman was pretending to train for a marathon and posting all about it. So sad to think they need all the attention from something like
ReplyDelete!00% agree. There's a whole subreddit about running influencers and their antics. It used to be the GOMI blog, now it's on reddit. It can get a little catty but it's interesting to read about what runners are doing for attention.
DeleteWow - posting a fake run on Strava. How ridiculous. Whoever is doing that really has some major issues. I loathe cheating in all forms! What a stupid and pointless thing to do!
ReplyDeleteWe’ve had beautiful weather here in Minneapolis too. I love when the summer weather arrives even though it makes for warmer runs. The sunshine feels so good!! I think fall is probably my favorite season but late fall can be too cold. With summer, pretty much the entire season is great for running.
We've been cooler than normal but it has made for some fabulous runs! I'm not going to complain!
DeleteYour family reunion sounds fun! I have a bunch of cousins I’m really close to, and am actually headed to a mini reunion of sorts (graduation party) as I’m typing (I’m not the driver, LOL). Nice HS haul! Looks like a lot of great stuff!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had fun at your reunion! Family is fun!
DeleteWhy would anyone want to fake a run on Strava??!! That's ridiculous! But with today's social media behaviour, I wouldn't be surprised if people get some weird benefit (brand collabs??) from it if it enhances their distances.
ReplyDeleteYour runs this week look gorgeous! Such lovely trails and such lovely weather (although cooler than you'd want to).
I think I've heard it all and then I hear something new...
DeleteI love your pictures of the trails, and seeing the columbines was nice as I have those in my garden! I am missing running, I thought I might be starting soon but my achilles has been hurting a bit again this week (no idea why). Family reunion sounds amazing, I have a small and fractured family and would never get to see them all at the same time. I was cheered that my cousin went over to our mutual aunt's house and sorted her garden out the other day (there were three siblings and we're the children of the other two).
ReplyDeleteThat's tough...I have 3 sisters and one is estranged from our family. It's been years and we've all kind of moved on. I was happy to see all my cousins and there was no drama at the gathering for a change!
DeleteWho has the time to fake a run? And then upload the fake stats?! That's just... well... it's not for me.
ReplyDeleteYour views are always exceptional. I'm amazed that you come back from the trails at all. I would get "lost".
I love that you had a family reunion. There is nothing good that could come from getting more than a few members of our family together at any given time. It's sad, but that's how it goes sometimes.
